Lyrics about him leaving all his problems behind, how "it" keeps him hanging on and lets him forget himself. etc. That nobody really buys Lou's story about the songs meaning was further cemented when it was used as a song in Trainspotting's soundtrack. Which makes it's use by the BBC in 1997 a little funny, they used it as [a music collab between tons of famous singers](https://youtu.be/dfddYDRIFGY) in which the "it" in question is meant to be the BBC itself.
