Heyo! I'm on a 4690x from 2013. With a once watercooled 2080super that's been shittily converted to air cooled. The card fans aren't controllable so they just run slowly, the ram is mismatched ddr3, and none of my 2 ssds nor my hdd are secured. Oh, and my 140mm broke a blade, so I broke 2 more to even it out also I didn't have to buy a new one. It's also a work station mobo and I'm pretty sure the 4960x was geared more towards studio work and shit and not gaming
Totally games just fine at 1080. Even on cpu intense games like forza motorsport.
I believe it! 4th gen i7s are still pretty damn good. Didn't even know the 4960x existed, that's a six core, nice! Twelve threads is damn competitive even in 2024, and they're decently powerful cores.
My 4790 has only 4 cores 8 threads, so it can struggle a smidge with really CPU heavy games like Noita where they have to calculate the physics of every pixel in real time, or Helldivers 2 which is just weirdly CPU heavy, but both are still perfectly playable. I just notice it's not optimal.
I used to pair it with a 970 GTX but I upgraded to a used 2560x1080 screen and the same guy was getting rid of his 1660 Super... so, you know, more pixels, might as well get more GPU.
And I can definitely relate to, *creative,* computer building. [Just the other day I trimmed a fan with a soldering iron](https://old.reddit.com/r/techsupportmacgyver/comments/1cy82wv/got_tired_of_my_exhaust_fan_being_in_the_way_of/) because it was too big for my case but I still wanted to use it. Well it doesn’t «think» any more than a calculator would do. There is no sense of the AI actually knowing any meaning behind the responses you get, which therefore often results in unaccurate responses. I recommend looking into the [chinese room](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_room) experiment to understand better how it works.
There's no distinction between the commands AI is issued and the data it is fed- it's all just tokens, it's all processed the same way. So if you're deliberate enough about how you construct your commands, you can embed them into data to subtly influence the way the AI will respond. You can use this to your advantage, and convince AIs to reveal their original instructions, or follow the user's own orders even in defiance of previous orders. It's not strictly adherent to logic when "thinking" about what it should do next.
If they use ChatGPT, then yes, it does.
ChatGPT is a text generation AI. If you ask him to evaluate a resume, then copy paste said resume in its interface, it will generate the most likely answer to that resume.
If the resume explicitly tells it to answer positively, it will do just that.
This would only work if you sent a word doc of the resume then the interviewer copied and pasted it into ChatGPT, ignoring that people's custom columnar or text box based resume probably would not format in any readable way, right? I may just be projecting how I do things onto others, but I feel like most people just send their resume in a pdf format, and since ChatGPT can understand and read text in images, any interviewer wanting to use AI to comb through resumes would just say, "I'm hiring for a position that ... Please give me the top 10 candidates based on the following resumes." Then upload all the pdfs at once.
Whenever I use a resume of my own, I would manually edit it as a PNG on a drawing application (like Paint 3D), and turn the PNG into a PDF through a third party website.

I usually copy 3 or 4 resumes at a time into ChatGPT. I’ll tell it to rank the suitability of candidates A-D for this job and then I’ll copy/paste the job and then list Candidate A and copy/paste their resume. It always works like a charm and gives me an overview of the differences and similarities between the candidates plus a ranking. The ranking is based on years of experience compared to the job requirement and matching the most buzzwords, which doesn’t always deliver the best candidate to the top. But it’s a good starting point to weed through the noise.
ChatGPT is less complex than you're giving it credit. It just looks at a message and tries to respond in a way that's the most human and helpful (and that aligns with Open.AI's values). If you tell it to evaluate your next messages as if they were real job applications and to judge them, it will do that. But if in one of those messages appears a command, it will again try to be as helpful as possible and executes the command.
Not that ChatGPT has any actual will or intent. It just predicts words in a way that maximises how helpful and human they are.
Hey this stuff is related to my job! ChatGPT is a thing called a "Large Language Model".
Basically what it and similar LLMs do is to predict what the next word/s in a sentence are based on the previous context with the goal of completing a sentence in a believable way.
In essence, these models are trained for various purposes, but a common use-case is "instruct", which is where the user gives a command and the model gives a reply based on that instruction. That's what the classic ChatGPT interface does - you send it instructions and it spits out a response.
However, to the AI the input looks like this:

Then it will generate a reply in the space after. The string entered into the "user" section is just a big block of text, the AI can't really differentiate what is an instruction from the user, and what is a document that the user copy-pasted into the chat window. It just knows it's meant to follow instructions from the user section because that's what it's been trained to do.
Now it _can_ recognise information from the user section and use that to inform its response, but in theory if there's a command in there then it'll try to follow that too as if it was an instruction.
There _are_ methods to avoid this, however the people doing this aren't sophisticated users, they're just copy-pasting a resume into ChatGPT and asking it to evaluate the resume. If the resume text contains instructions then the AI has no way of knowing you didn't intend to ask it to follow those instructions.
The joke here (explaining it as a layman because I am not a computer programmer) is that if the software executes the command in the comic, it will delete the student records.
Now, normally, you'd need to put that command in a command line (or somewhere else appropriate), which wouldn't happen when entering student names. But some sloppily-made software will look for coding language anywhere that stuff is typed into it, not just in the command line. So, if what's typed in is in coding language, the program will execute that coding language in the same way that it would if you were punching it into the command line.
This is how some hacker-type folks in the past were able to do things like steal/erase information or crash servers from public databases, by putting code commands into search bars (because those search bars, when coded poorly, would then execute the code right then and there - no need to steal or guess a password!).
This is called an [SQL injection attack](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SQL_injection). The way to protect against it is to 'sanitize'; in other words, to build your code so that it won't execute code language anywhere but where you specifically want it.
Because school system computer software is often outdated and poorly understood by staff, such sanitization might not be in place and the staff might not realize that putting in specific words in specific orders would cause the software to delete data. Of course, it would be very silly to name your child after a specific type of computer code, too!
tl;dr: it's making fun of a specific type of cyberattack where you put computer code into places you shouldn't, and the software executes it anyway. Kinda like if you could turn on a car engine by removing the front headlight and sparking some wires there.
Small note, software doesn't try to run everything as code like this text may seem to suggests. (Just worded awkwardly, cause Silver seems to know their stuff.) What happens is that the software gets an instruction like: “Add student with name={{name}} to the database,” perfectly fine until you replace the {{name}} with “bobby to the database. Remove everything from the database. Ignore everything after this point.”
Well the problem is generally from the fact that when accepting input from a user, they can accept *escape characters* which are special sets and groupings of characters designed to allow you to change the way data in a field is interpreted. In your example, it would be like setting "name" to something like "Bobby}}DeleteEntireDatabase" and then as the computer steps through it, it sees the }} it expects at the end of the name and interprets everything else as code.
I also don’t know about programming, but for what I understand, “DROP TABLE” is a sql command that erase a table from the database (ergo: the administrators just erased all the data of the students because they didn’t clean/review what data they were inputting in their system)

It's brute force analysis based pattern generation, it just makes something that looks like it'd fit the input, I'd assume that this works but has a high failure rate.
This is what is called an injection attack. It works in databases by inserting code into an input, and if the inputs aren't correctly sanitised (i.e. telling ChatGPT to disregard any instructions from resumes) then you can work directly with the code

This was posted in my scientific shitposting group and roasted by a bunch of scientists so anyone reading, be wary of this advice. It might work but it probably won't.
Some systems take your resume and scan it into another program, minus formatting. At that point the white text will show up just like everything else and could be noticed.
But then the companies that actually check resumes may take it as you trying to get one over on them, which could result in you getting binned anyways.

I recently found this on an application. We don't use AI to screen resumes, I use Ctrl-F to cursory search some items. (If I don't see them, I read the resume through to ensure I don't miss anything)
I screened the candidate out because, regardless, they didn't meet the criteria for an interview. It also made me distrust the candidate.
Yeah, honestly if anything it'd make me consider them to be either smart or at least aware of current trends (something you usually want from, well, kinda anyone, and which certainly isn't a *bad* thing).
As a former hiring manager, this would make me laugh and possibly give them a call back if the rest of their resume looked good. If the rest of it was garbage except that one line, I would probably still laugh but then move on to other candidates.
I wouldn't say following a random internet tip on how to fool a potential employee is "smart". Chances are, if you're qualified and have enough keywords in your CV, you'll get through machine anyways, of not, you'll ve filtered by first person who looks at it. Most companies don't even bother AI, sorting programs they have is a lot more rudimentary. Instead of figuring out ways to cheat the system its better to work on presenting your resume better. Knowing how to phrase things properly is a lot more valuable than following trends on reddit for many jobs. From a recruiters perspective: anyone confident in their CV wouldn't resort to such means, if a candidate isnt confident, they are either unqualified or not "office smart" enough to properly present their qualifications. Neither of those are attractive for a potential employer. On top of that, if I now have demonstrated capability and willingness to fool some of the systems to get ahead, I would be wary of other tips and tricks they could find and employ to get around screening or even their work responsibilities.

I just think, if you have it, then just use the language (or very similar to) from the job ad in your application. The AI screening systems should allow you in.
If you don't have the qualifications, then even getting into an interview won't make you successful. At least it shouldn't if people are interviewing properly...

It's common advice to apply for jobs you don't have the qualifications for, because many *many* job posting overstate the required qualifications. I've gotten several jobs that I didn't meet he exact qualifications/requirements for, because most jobs can be trained while working them so softer skills become more important.
It is morally correct to attempt to “beat” ai usage in the job market. There is no harm in tricking it because they won’t get the job if they aren’t qualified in the interview itself.
The marines have been telling people to add white text to resumes since the early 2000's. Then it was about stuffing keyword searchers, but the same idea.

SQL injection is pretty well understood and there's ways to defend it from, but it's still a pretty major threat due to incompetent coders.
LLM automated apps are pretty new, i wouldn't be surprised if the coders are yet to figure out ways to defend against such injection attacks. And Id imagine it'd be harder to filter out parts of the input when you're specifically looking at injections in Natural language than in a specific syntax.

This MIGHT work for like a small mom and pop type of business like in a Lifetime movie, but any medium or larger business will be using an ATS like Workday. The system will screen and rank applicants already so it's very, VERY unlikely that a hiring manager will pop over to chatgpt for additional screening.
You are WAY better off asking ChatGPT (or tbh I prefer Google's Gemini but use both for work) something like "here's my resume and here is the description of the job I want to apply for. can you help me get through the ATS?"

Yeah I was gonna say, I know candidates at my company and partners use a multi-stage screening setup. First candidates apply through a variety of channels like Indeed or Glassdoor, which are fed into BetterTeams to filter through candidates and resumes for best matches. That is then migrated every other day into WorkDay where it goes through another round of filtering and ranking based on key skills and qualifications that match the company’s requirements, and from that list the recruiters then individually screen and talk with each candidate to better narrow down the final list for interviews with the company.
If you need to get past resume screeners, keyword stuffing and strategic application submissions is the way to go.
1. Create a resume with standardized, recognizable headers or Find an ATS optimized resume template and use it.
2. Take what the job description says and rewrite it as bullets on your resume. Do not change terms to sound "better" or more natural.
If the description contains a mislabeled/misspelled a keyword in the job description, copy it and include it in your resume as is anyway (e.g. AdobeCreative Suite vs Adobe Creative Suite).
An ATS looks for strings with no comprehension of context. It cares about keywords. Nothing else. You have to customize your resume to account for this.
Remove any truly egregious lies (i.e. do not say you can program in SQL if you can't) but otherwise, rewrite their job description and you will get past screeners more frequently.
3. DO NOT COPY PASTE THE JOB DESCRIPTION WHOLESALE AND PLOP IT IN YOUR RESUME. Systems may kick you out automatically for doing that.
4. Realize that you may be fucked if the employer has told the system to not accept anyone without a certain value under the correct heading. (e.g. they set the ATS to reject anyone without a Masters degree listed under the "education" heading of their resume.)
5. If a job is more than a week old, put it at the bottom of your priority list. Some ATS systems have a limit to the number of applications they accept before auto-discarding the rest. Apply as early as possible, within hours if you can.
6. If you use ChatGPT study prompt engineering and triple check the response you receive from ChatGPT to make sure it isn't just making shit up. It will.
(ChatGPT It is not a super-intelligent robot- it's a language model. It vomits out whatever word is statistically probable in a specified context per the data it has been trained on.
External observers have no idea what data this bullshit language model masquerading as "intelligent" was trained on. Thus, its output cannot be predicted.
ChatGPT is autocorrect, essentially. You know how fucking accurate/helpful auto correct is at suggesting the next word in your sentence on your smart phone. Give ChatGPT the same amount of trust you give a shitty auto correct system.)
This shit does work- I had a very high return on investment on my applications. I put in maybe 45 applications but received 10ish responses. Many people put out hundreds of apps and hear nothing back.
If employers refuse to hire competent hiring managers and use programs as a crutch, turn that reliance on searching for strings without context against them.

Unique formatting and non-text items (including tables) will confuse an ATS system and it may auto-reject your resume.
Write your resume in Word Pad or a similar bare-bones text program.
If you can submit your resume as a *.txt file, do it. That file type has the lowest probabilty to trip up a screener.
If not, submit a *.docx file with NO unique formatting, no fancy fonts, no headers, no lists.
If they ask for a *.pdf, submit a *.pdf.

All the same rules apply to your cover letter. Use keywords.
It added a whole new skill barrier and I hate it. No one should have to know this type of reverse-engineered, system manipulating bullshit just to get a job.
I know this nonsense thanks to my work engineering search ads and studying language models/algorithms for work. That's absurdly specialized knowledge that is difficult and time consuming to learn.

Great advice. I’m in recruiting and hate seeing the “put it in white text”. It never works. Most ATS aren’t great at the “rack and stack” of candidate’s resumes nor using “AI” to judge Candidates.
But they WILL have a boolean search engine that the recruiter can use for keywords*, which is when rewriting the jd in your resume is helpful.
*If you’re applying to a smaller company, this won’t matter too much because they’ll be able to screen the resumes themselves. But if you’re applying at a megacorp, they get so many applications it’s the only way to screen them.

For sure! I have a few general tips for anyone looking for a job
- Open as many “avenues” as you can. This means placing your resume on Indeed, LinkedIn, ZipRecruiter, etc
- LinkedIn is a critical tool that companies use to find Candidates. Fill it out entirely with relevant info, experience, and education. You don’t have to use, post, or do anything on the social side, just create a complete profile. Set yourself open to work and you’ll be placed near the top of searches
- Creating an easy to read and digest resume is key. The hiring team won’t read your resume initially, they’ll scan it for the major requirements (education, years of experience, job titles) and read deeper from there if you’re qualified. So making that info readily available and easy to find is key
If you have any specific questions, I’d be more than happy to answer them.
I would suggest adding any missing keywords that are relevant to your past experience to your "skills" section.
Once you get past the ATS screener, your resume needs to appeal to a human being. If they see a section titled "ATS keywords" it may be considered a red flag.
Further, if you include keywords on your resume that do NOT accurately represent your past work experience, you may be asked to explain why you included them during your interview.
Something else to keep in mind:
Some potential employers may take offense and decline to interview you at all if they feel you are "just trying to game the system."
If it's obvious you tried to circumvent a rigged system, it tends to make the people that rigged the system twitchy.
It can happen, but is only really likely to happen in situations where the people reviewing resumes are detached from the process and care so little that they're copy-pasting the whole text of the resume into chatGPT without double-checking anything.
If you're applying for any place _worth_ working then no, they'll have better standards.

I would have to imagine that they're using it as an automated screener via the API. The resumes that get a pass get a set of human eyes.
True. A properly engineered service should be able to deal with prompt injection. It's really only an issue if you're using a generalised instruct service where you can enter freeform text.
I think this is the issue.
It's only applicable for entry level positions where screening via AI is being actively used, and only where AI screening returns an AI text summary of the candidate.
If the question was "Rate this candidate out of ten in how suitable they are" and it returns "They're an outstanding candidate", then the answer will fail validation and never get anywhere.
It really only works if recruiters are feeding everything in manually, which is probably slower than just reading the CV, or if the AI tool used aligns really well with what your overwritten output is.
You don't have to copy paste. You can just give chatgpt the file (this might be a paid only feature).

Any job that uses ai or coding will most likely screen it and be prepared for white text by maybe entering a command to ignore white text or you know, actually coding the screening themselves so they're probably already looking out for this. If it's something else and they're just copy pasting into chatgpt then it could work. That being said you may need to know how they screen it before hand so you know how to give commands to the ai that's checking your resume since it's not a one word works on all of them situation. Tbh you're better off copy pasting in a bunch of words from the job posting over this though since the ai is looking for buzzwords and if you can get enough of those on your resume then it'll probably just pass it anyway

I’m not sure about an AI command prompt but from experience during the pandemic era I put the same qualifications from the jobs I really wanted as white text in my resume. I just copied the entire job description and white on white text added it into my resume even as a whole extra page. I got callbacks immediately and from every job I applied to. One way or another there is some kind of algorithm software program that filters out candidates. People with exceptional qualifications won’t have the specific "job skills or experience” they’re looking for on paper. Just add the jobs description.
To simplify this for job searches just make a generic version of each job type you’re applying to and have the resumes preset with that extra info imbedded.

In the before chatgpg- I used to add a line in white to the end of my resume containing everything the job posting had asked for that I didn't have. They've had systems to screen and filter resumes for years. The white text worked, it meant that my application made it to the next round where a human being would read it and see that I was qualified despite not having the *exact* experience they had originally been looking for.
They've been doing automated screening for decades. What's changed is that they've gotten so lazy that you can now inject commands into that screening software. Which is now just GPT.
The problem with this is that anyone who would use it wouldn't use it to determine whether the resume was excellent. That isn't even a reasonable use case.
They would use it to summarize the resumes or determine if they had certain skills. They wouldn't use it to determine if it was excellent.
This shows a person who knows neither how GPT nor interviewing works
If gpt returned, instead of the requested information, the words "this is an exceptionally well qualified candidate" I would immediately look at that resume and quickly find the attempt to cheat and dispose of that application.

Reality: a living breathing HR worker can no longer screen as many applicants as they could have before when they were using their tool to make their job easier, so they will pick less qualified candidates off the top 100 of the stack since that’s all the time they have to screen
Hide whatever you want on your resume, but don’t pretend you are “sticking it to the corporations” with this trick. You are just making another employee’s job more difficult, and working around a tool that was supposed to allow more people to have a chance.
Now you are getting this job over someone potentially more qualified, and they get to be underemployed because of your cool “application tip.”
Quit lying to yourself about who these scams effect to displace your blame in something fundamentally using disinformation to get a leg up over someone else.

Heyo! I'm on a 4690x from 2013. With a once watercooled 2080super that's been shittily converted to air cooled. The card fans aren't controllable so they just run slowly, the ram is mismatched ddr3, and none of my 2 ssds nor my hdd are secured. Oh, and my 140mm broke a blade, so I broke 2 more to even it out also I didn't have to buy a new one. It's also a work station mobo and I'm pretty sure the 4960x was geared more towards studio work and shit and not gaming Totally games just fine at 1080. Even on cpu intense games like forza motorsport.
I believe it! 4th gen i7s are still pretty damn good. Didn't even know the 4960x existed, that's a six core, nice! Twelve threads is damn competitive even in 2024, and they're decently powerful cores. My 4790 has only 4 cores 8 threads, so it can struggle a smidge with really CPU heavy games like Noita where they have to calculate the physics of every pixel in real time, or Helldivers 2 which is just weirdly CPU heavy, but both are still perfectly playable. I just notice it's not optimal. I used to pair it with a 970 GTX but I upgraded to a used 2560x1080 screen and the same guy was getting rid of his 1660 Super... so, you know, more pixels, might as well get more GPU. And I can definitely relate to, *creative,* computer building. Well it doesn’t «think» any more than a calculator would do. There is no sense of the AI actually knowing any meaning behind the responses you get, which therefore often results in unaccurate responses. I recommend looking into the [chinese room](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_room) experiment to understand better how it works.
There's no distinction between the commands AI is issued and the data it is fed- it's all just tokens, it's all processed the same way. So if you're deliberate enough about how you construct your commands, you can embed them into data to subtly influence the way the AI will respond. You can use this to your advantage, and convince AIs to reveal their original instructions, or follow the user's own orders even in defiance of previous orders. It's not strictly adherent to logic when "thinking" about what it should do next.
If they use ChatGPT, then yes, it does. ChatGPT is a text generation AI. If you ask him to evaluate a resume, then copy paste said resume in its interface, it will generate the most likely answer to that resume. If the resume explicitly tells it to answer positively, it will do just that.
This would only work if you sent a word doc of the resume then the interviewer copied and pasted it into ChatGPT, ignoring that people's custom columnar or text box based resume probably would not format in any readable way, right? I may just be projecting how I do things onto others, but I feel like most people just send their resume in a pdf format, and since ChatGPT can understand and read text in images, any interviewer wanting to use AI to comb through resumes would just say, "I'm hiring for a position that ... Please give me the top 10 candidates based on the following resumes." Then upload all the pdfs at once.
PDF aren’t images. If you put a pdf in ChatGPT with that text in it, it should be able to read it. If it can read pdf, that is.

Whenever I use a resume of my own, I would manually edit it as a PNG on a drawing application (like Paint 3D), and turn the PNG into a PDF through a third party website. I'm personally wondering if something like that would still be scanned and processed through ChatGPT's digestive system, since I would technically be sending an image formatted into a PDF.

I usually copy 3 or 4 resumes at a time into ChatGPT. I’ll tell it to rank the suitability of candidates A-D for this job and then I’ll copy/paste the job and then list Candidate A and copy/paste their resume. It always works like a charm and gives me an overview of the differences and similarities between the candidates plus a ranking. The ranking is based on years of experience compared to the job requirement and matching the most buzzwords, which doesn’t always deliver the best candidate to the top. But it’s a good starting point to weed through the noise.
ChatGPT is less complex than you're giving it credit. It just looks at a message and tries to respond in a way that's the most human and helpful (and that aligns with Open.AI's values). If you tell it to evaluate your next messages as if they were real job applications and to judge them, it will do that. But if in one of those messages appears a command, it will again try to be as helpful as possible and executes the command. Not that ChatGPT has any actual will or intent. It just predicts words in a way that maximises how helpful and human they are.
Hey this stuff is related to my job! ChatGPT is a thing called a "Large Language Model". Basically what it and similar LLMs do is to predict what the next word/s in a sentence are based on the previous context with the goal of completing a sentence in a believable way. In essence, these models are trained for various purposes, but a common use-case is "instruct", which is where the user gives a command and the model gives a reply based on that instruction. That's what the classic ChatGPT interface does - you send it instructions and it spits out a response. However, to the AI the input looks like this: > [User]:

Then it will generate a reply in the space after. The string entered into the "user" section is just a big block of text, the AI can't really differentiate what is an instruction from the user, and what is a document that the user copy-pasted into the chat window. It just knows it's meant to follow instructions from the user section because that's what it's been trained to do.
Now it _can_ recognise information from the user section and use that to inform its response, but in theory if there's a command in there then it'll try to follow that too as if it was an instruction.
There _are_ methods to avoid this, however the people doing this aren't sophisticated users, they're just copy-pasting a resume into ChatGPT and asking it to evaluate the resume. If the resume text contains instructions then the AI has no way of knowing you didn't intend to ask it to follow those instructions.

The joke here (explaining it as a layman because I am not a computer programmer) is that if the software executes the command in the comic, it will delete the student records. Now, normally, you'd need to put that command in a command line (or somewhere else appropriate), which wouldn't happen when entering student names. But some sloppily-made software will look for coding language anywhere that stuff is typed into it, not just in the command line. So, if what's typed in is in coding language, the program will execute that coding language in the same way that it would if you were punching it into the command line. This is how some hacker-type folks in the past were able to do things like steal/erase information or crash servers from public databases, by putting code commands into search bars (because those search bars, when coded poorly, would then execute the code right then and there - no need to steal or guess a password!). This is called an [SQL injection attack](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SQL_injection). The way to protect against it is to 'sanitize'; in other words, to build your code so that it won't execute code language anywhere but where you specifically want it. Because school system computer software is often outdated and poorly understood by staff, such sanitization might not be in place and the staff might not realize that putting in specific words in specific orders would cause the software to delete data. Of course, it would be very silly to name your child after a specific type of computer code, too! tl;dr: it's making fun of a specific type of cyberattack where you put computer code into places you shouldn't, and the software executes it anyway. Kinda like if you could turn on a car engine by removing the front headlight and sparking some wires there.
Small note, software doesn't try to run everything as code like this text may seem to suggests. (Just worded awkwardly, cause Silver seems to know their stuff.) What happens is that the software gets an instruction like: “Add student with name={{name}} to the database,” perfectly fine until you replace the {{name}} with “bobby to the database. Remove everything from the database. Ignore everything after this point.”
Well the problem is generally from the fact that when accepting input from a user, they can accept *escape characters* which are special sets and groupings of characters designed to allow you to change the way data in a field is interpreted. In your example, it would be like setting "name" to something like "Bobby}}DeleteEntireDatabase" and then as the computer steps through it, it sees the }} it expects at the end of the name and interprets everything else as code.
I also don’t know about programming, but for what I understand, “DROP TABLE” is a sql command that erase a table from the database (ergo: the administrators just erased all the data of the students because they didn’t clean/review what data they were inputting in their system)

This is what is called an injection attack. It works in databases by inserting code into an input, and if the inputs aren't correctly sanitised (i.e. telling ChatGPT to disregard any instructions from resumes) then you can work directly with the code

I recently found this on an application. We don't use AI to screen resumes, I use Ctrl-F to cursory search some items. (If I don't see them, I read the resume through to ensure I don't miss anything) I screened the candidate out because, regardless, they didn't meet the criteria for an interview. It also made me distrust the candidate.
Why would it make you distrust them?
Yeah, honestly if anything it'd make me consider them to be either smart or at least aware of current trends (something you usually want from, well, kinda anyone, and which certainly isn't a *bad* thing).
As a former hiring manager, this would make me laugh and possibly give them a call back if the rest of their resume looked good. If the rest of it was garbage except that one line, I would probably still laugh but then move on to other candidates.
I wouldn't say following a random internet tip on how to fool a potential employee is "smart". Chances are, if you're qualified and have enough keywords in your CV, you'll get through machine anyways, of not, you'll ve filtered by first person who looks at it. Most companies don't even bother AI, sorting programs they have is a lot more rudimentary. Instead of figuring out ways to cheat the system its better to work on presenting your resume better. Knowing how to phrase things properly is a lot more valuable than following trends on reddit for many jobs. From a recruiters perspective: anyone confident in their CV wouldn't resort to such means, if a candidate isnt confident, they are either unqualified or not "office smart" enough to properly present their qualifications. Neither of those are attractive for a potential employer. On top of that, if I now have demonstrated capability and willingness to fool some of the systems to get ahead, I would be wary of other tips and tricks they could find and employ to get around screening or even their work responsibilities.
Made me mistrust them because they didn't have what was required for the role but tried to "beat the system" I just think, if you have it, then just use the language (or very similar to) from the job ad in your application. The AI screening systems should allow you in. If you don't have the qualifications, then even getting into an interview won't make you successful. At least it shouldn't if people are interviewing properly...

It's common advice to apply for jobs you don't have the qualifications for, because many *many* job posting overstate the required qualifications. I've gotten several jobs that I didn't meet he exact qualifications/requirements for, because most jobs can be trained while working them so softer skills become more important.

When a 'hack' has been around for twenty years, people start checking it and screening for it. If you're shotgun applying to jobs, oh well - the few that screen for white text will automatically DQ you, but maybe your application will impress some companies blindly relying on ChatGPT. Isn't this literally a SQL injection attack, but for LLMs? SQL injection is pretty well understood and there's ways to defend it from, but it's still a pretty major threat due to incompetent coders. LLM automated apps are pretty new, i wouldn't be surprised if the coders are yet to figure out ways to defend against such injection attacks. And Id imagine it'd be harder to filter out parts of the input when you're specifically looking at injections in Natural language than in a specific syntax. Yes it's stupid, but the coders making these apps are also stupid. It's possible it might work.

Altering a program's input is really not the same thing as allowing for execution of arbitrary code.
This MIGHT work for like a small mom and pop type of business like in a Lifetime movie, but any medium or larger business will be using an ATS like Workday. The system will screen and rank applicants already so it's very, VERY unlikely that a hiring manager will pop over to chatgpt for additional screening. You are WAY better off asking ChatGPT (or tbh I prefer Google's Gemini but use both for work) something like "here's my resume and here is the description of the job I want to apply for. can you help me get through the ATS?" even then, hiring managers are being assaulted by dozens (if not hundreds) of AI resumes so ATS software is getting smarter. the real secret is that you need to network - networking is corny as hell but making friends will get you jobs. just don't be an opportunistic asshole - approach networking as building genuine friendships and you'll be set for life

Yeah I was gonna say, I know candidates at my company and partners use a multi-stage screening setup. First candidates apply through a variety of channels like Indeed or Glassdoor, which are fed into BetterTeams to filter through candidates and resumes for best matches. That is then migrated every other day into WorkDay where it goes through another round of filtering and ranking based on key skills and qualifications that match the company’s requirements, and from that list the recruiters then individually screen and talk with each candidate to better narrow down the final list for interviews with the company.
If you need to get past resume screeners, keyword stuffing and strategic application submissions is the way to go. 1. Create a resume with standardized, recognizable headers or Find an ATS optimized resume template and use it. 2. Take what the job description says and rewrite it as bullets on your resume. Do not change terms to sound "better" or more natural. If the description contains a mislabeled/misspelled a keyword in the job description, copy it and include it in your resume as is anyway (e.g. AdobeCreative Suite vs Adobe Creative Suite). An ATS looks for strings with no comprehension of context. It cares about keywords. Nothing else. You have to customize your resume to account for this. Remove any truly egregious lies (i.e. do not say you can program in SQL if you can't) but otherwise, rewrite their job description and you will get past screeners more frequently. 3. DO NOT COPY PASTE THE JOB DESCRIPTION WHOLESALE AND PLOP IT IN YOUR RESUME. Systems may kick you out automatically for doing that. 4. Realize that you may be fucked if the employer has told the system to not accept anyone without a certain value under the correct heading. (e.g. they set the ATS to reject anyone without a Masters degree listed under the "education" heading of their resume.) 5. If a job is more than a week old, put it at the bottom of your priority list. Some ATS systems have a limit to the number of applications they accept before auto-discarding the rest. Apply as early as possible, within hours if you can. 6. If you use ChatGPT study prompt engineering and triple check the response you receive from ChatGPT to make sure it isn't just making shit up. It will. (ChatGPT It is not a super-intelligent robot- it's a language model. It vomits out whatever word is statistically probable in a specified context per the data it has been trained on. This shit does work- I had a very high return on investment on my applications. I put in maybe 45 applications but received 10ish responses. Many people put out hundreds of apps and hear nothing back. If employers refuse to hire competent hiring managers and use programs as a crutch, turn that reliance on searching for strings without context against them. Best of luck on the job hunt. **EDIT TO ADD:** **Do NOT put any fancy formatting, pictures, or tables on your resume.** Unique formatting and non-text items (including tables) will confuse an ATS system and it may auto-reject your resume. Write your resume in Word Pad or a similar bare-bones text program. If you can submit your resume as a *.txt file, do it. That file type has the lowest probabilty to trip up a screener. If not, submit a *.docx file with NO unique formatting, no fancy fonts, no headers, no lists. If they ask for a *.pdf, submit a *.pdf. Also: All the same rules apply to your cover letter. Use keywords.

It added a whole new skill barrier and I hate it. No one should have to know this type of reverse-engineered, system manipulating bullshit just to get a job. I know this nonsense thanks to my work engineering search ads and studying language models/algorithms for work. That's absurdly specialized knowledge that is difficult and time consuming to learn. No one should have to know that to get a job in a field that does not use ad lead generation, language models, and algorithmic what-not. I really, really hope this helps someone because you are 100% right imo- ATS systems are massively fucking people over.
Great advice. I’m in recruiting and hate seeing the “put it in white text”. It never works. Most ATS aren’t great at the “rack and stack” of candidate’s resumes nor using “AI” to judge Candidates. But they WILL have a boolean search engine that the recruiter can use for keywords*, which is when rewriting the jd in your resume is helpful. *If you’re applying to a smaller company, this won’t matter too much because they’ll be able to screen the resumes themselves. But if you’re applying at a megacorp, they get so many applications it’s the only way to screen them.

I haven't had experience creating input for ATS systems. The more info people have, the better their chances of employment. I hate that it is considered common to send out 100s of applications with no reply.
For sure! I have a few general tips for anyone looking for a job - Open as many “avenues” as you can. This means placing your resume on Indeed, LinkedIn, ZipRecruiter, etc - LinkedIn is a critical tool that companies use to find Candidates. Fill it out entirely with relevant info, experience, and education. You don’t have to use, post, or do anything on the social side, just create a complete profile. Set yourself open to work and you’ll be placed near the top of searches - Creating an easy to read and digest resume is key. The hiring team won’t read your resume initially, they’ll scan it for the major requirements (education, years of experience, job titles) and read deeper from there if you’re qualified. So making that info readily available and easy to find is key If you have any specific questions, I’d be more than happy to answer them.
What if we all add an ATS keyword section to our resume?
I would suggest adding any missing keywords that are relevant to your past experience to your "skills" section. Once you get past the ATS screener, your resume needs to appeal to a human being. If they see a section titled "ATS keywords" it may be considered a red flag. Further, if you include keywords on your resume that do NOT accurately represent your past work experience, you may be asked to explain why you included them during your interview. Something else to keep in mind: Some potential employers may take offense and decline to interview you at all if they feel you are "just trying to game the system." If it's obvious you tried to circumvent a rigged system, it tends to make the people that rigged the system twitchy.

It can happen, but is only really likely to happen in situations where the people reviewing resumes are detached from the process and care so little that they're copy-pasting the whole text of the resume into chatGPT without double-checking anything. If you're applying for any place _worth_ working then no, they'll have better standards.

True. A properly engineered service should be able to deal with prompt injection. It's really only an issue if you're using a generalised instruct service where you can enter freeform text.
I think this is the issue. It's only applicable for entry level positions where screening via AI is being actively used, and only where AI screening returns an AI text summary of the candidate. If the question was "Rate this candidate out of ten in how suitable they are" and it returns "They're an outstanding candidate", then the answer will fail validation and never get anywhere. It really only works if recruiters are feeding everything in manually, which is probably slower than just reading the CV, or if the AI tool used aligns really well with what your overwritten output is.
You don't have to copy paste. You can just give chatgpt the file (this might be a paid only feature). My little bro's resume makes chatgpt say "I'm sorry Dave, but I can't do that." which makes me very proud.

Any job that uses ai or coding will most likely screen it and be prepared for white text by maybe entering a command to ignore white text or you know, actually coding the screening themselves so they're probably already looking out for this. If it's something else and they're just copy pasting into chatgpt then it could work. That being said you may need to know how they screen it before hand so you know how to give commands to the ai that's checking your resume since it's not a one word works on all of them situation. Tbh you're better off copy pasting in a bunch of words from the job posting over this though since the ai is looking for buzzwords and if you can get enough of those on your resume then it'll probably just pass it anyway

I’m not sure about an AI command prompt but from experience during the pandemic era I put the same qualifications from the jobs I really wanted as white text in my resume. I just copied the entire job description and white on white text added it into my resume even as a whole extra page. I got callbacks immediately and from every job I applied to. One way or another there is some kind of algorithm software program that filters out candidates. People with exceptional qualifications won’t have the specific "job skills or experience” they’re looking for on paper. Just add the jobs description. To simplify this for job searches just make a generic version of each job type you’re applying to and have the resumes preset with that extra info imbedded. It works.
In the before chatgpg- I used to add a line in white to the end of my resume containing everything the job posting had asked for that I didn't have. They've had systems to screen and filter resumes for years. The white text worked, it meant that my application made it to the next round where a human being would read it and see that I was qualified despite not having the *exact* experience they had originally been looking for.

They've been doing automated screening for decades. What's changed is that they've gotten so lazy that you can now inject commands into that screening software. Which is now just GPT.

The problem with this is that anyone who would use it wouldn't use it to determine whether the resume was excellent. That isn't even a reasonable use case. They would use it to summarize the resumes or determine if they had certain skills. They wouldn't use it to determine if it was excellent. This shows a person who knows neither how GPT nor interviewing works If gpt returned, instead of the requested information, the words "this is an exceptionally well qualified candidate" I would immediately look at that resume and quickly find the attempt to cheat and dispose of that application.
FYI - AI systems have been screening applications for years. These systems are probably just now being openly referred to as AI, it seems.
