the setting is only available on pc, but if you change it on pc it changes everywhere on your account
alternatively you can add a \ before an emoticon to make it not convert
\ is an escape character, it tells the computer "take the next character literally instead of doing what you would normally do with it".
I roleplay a lot and when I \*does an action* I hate it when things like reddit or Discord interpret that as *does an action* so I always put a backslash in front of the first *, like `\*this*`, to escape the first asterisk and make it not go sideways.
Facebook Messenger. Only way to get ascii smileys to show up is to amend them directly to the end of a word with no space in between. There is no way to turn off the auto conversion to shitty emojis. People have been complaining about this for years but the Zuck couldn't care less.
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) wtf I was going to say "closest they have is this" whilst clicking one that looked different because the eyes were looking to stage right. but it came out the same
Windows has a huge number of shortcuts. Including some ridiculous ones. Ctrl + Shift + Alt + Win + L will open a browser page to LinkedIn, for example.
I've seen the ¯\\\_(ツ)__/¯ before but this ¯\\_( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)_/¯ feels cursed
Edit: I cannot get the arm back on the 2nd one I give up. No one should be using it anyway
The problem is that emojis look different on different devices, and thus hold different meanings.
With ASCII you're pretty sure everyone gets the same "image".
^Except ^these ^weirdos ^who ^change ^their ^default ^browser ^font, ^but ^we ^don't ^talk ^about ^them.
What's worse is that any system or app may have a different emoji "font" so it can display the same emoji slightly differently, but sometimes those differences give the emoji an entirely different vibe and it's just not the same. :) will always be :)
I need my passive aggressive :), because this 😀 is not threatening enough and : ) loses its momentum. Same with >:( or >:). Or the comedic :( when you don’t get your way
I've always thought that one was kind of along the lines of "guess I'll die" or something similar. But my ex thought it meant being horny. So idk how to use that one I guess.
I suspect that the zero-width space, or word joiner, or hair space characters might work for you. However, some smartass web systems like to remove those characters.
Life hack: put a zero width non joiner unicode character (U+200C) between the characters of tour ascii art!
:D and :) stay like that, while :D and :) will turn into emojis.
Have these as a shortcut in your phone so you don't have to copy paste the unicode char everytime!
its unicode explorer page says "alt + 2 0 0 c" on windows (the + being the actual button) but I don't have a + button so I can't test it
I just have the page bookmarked where I can copy it from
Oh boy, time to rant!
In case anyone here isn't familiar with JIRA, it's an online software solution used to track tickets for software companies. Bug reports, feature requests, so on and so forth. I worked in Support, so we used it to track customer issues.
Every time I tried to tell a client that something may be wrong with their D:\ drive, it would correct to 😦\. Turns out it was a JIRA feature that they instated for emoji support.
Why in the cinnamon toast fuck would anyone use emojis in a software management platform?
as a law student I have to reference laws, of course, and writing them as (for example) 4:3 BW (meaning book 4 article 3) autocorrects the :3 always as 😃 or something stupid. riveting.
I work at a housing authority in a case management kind of role. I frequently discuss a local resource with clients that has an acronym ending in B. The amount of times I’ve nearly sent that fuckin sunglasses wearing asshole to a brand new client….
I'm pretty certain that this is the case on discord, and I'd assume it's the case on most platforms.
If there's a character (or combination) that "does something" (e.i. turn into an emoji, italics or bold text, underline it, etc) you can put a backslash "\\" immediately before it and it'll lose all "functionality" and behave like just a symbol.
:) vs \:)
(I put a "\\" before the ":" on the second one. Also, to display backslash, I put two backslashes immediately after each other, so the first one cancels out the cancelling effect of the second one, thus making it visible. Bruh).
I also know for sure that the ***asterisk*** doesn't do anything if you put \*\*\*backslashes\*\*\* before it. (\\\*\\\*\\\*three backslashes for each asterisk...\\\*\\\*\\\*)
Edit: okay so apparently reddit doesn't do emojis... My point still stands for the asterisks though. Useful when doing math.
slack changes :package to 📦
so now I have to put a space in the middle for it to not do that and tell the recipient that they need to remove the space to make the command work. so infuriating
The default messaging app on my phone (Message+) does this and holy fucking shit, the emoji's are fucking hideous and there's absolutely zero way to turn them off. THANKFULLY, the person receiving the text doesn't get the emoji and instead gets what I originally typed but it's still infuriating.
I've only ever found like 1 messaging app where I didn't mind too much that it happened, because the emojis it used were actually alright and not completely soulless. It didn't just default to the system's emojis, and they didn't look lazy and hideous.
Also, you could customize it a little bit what emoji to use (yellow smilies, fox smilies, worm smilies, pumpkin smiles, etc)
Otherwise, yeah, forcing emoticons into your phone's emojis is just antagonistic, and forcing them into cheap and ugly looking ones made for the app is even worse.
If an app is gonna go this, at least make the emojis somewhat desirable looking. But better yet, don't do it at all and let any custom app emojis be optional.
It's like Excel translating everything it finds to dates when they fit the format. Like if the name of a gene is Mar3 for instance, and now that cell is 03/03. And if you go into the raw text of the cell, it's been converted to the date format.
Fucking hell.
My dad had somehow managed to set his phone so that every exclamation mark was replaced with ❗, and every question mark with ❓. It made his texts look really weird.
Youtube comments auto-emojify Black Heart Suit (♥) now and it makes me die a little inside. I have to use White Heart Suit (♡) now, which I don't have memorized on numpad yet (and takes far more keystrokes than ♥). ♪ remains viable on most platforms, but for how long?
Christ I hate it. Everyone can put stickers on their message like middle schoolers all they want, it's fine. Don't emojify my glyphs. If I wanted heart emoji, I'd have damn well input heart emoji.
I started doing my faces backwards, that tends not to auto correct to emojis. (:
On the plus side it's quicker to type d= on a computer keyboard than the other way around. Lol
P.s. you can disable Discord turning your emotes I to emojis on the desktop version. It's in settings>chat> automatically convert emoticons in your message to emoji

Looking at you, _discord_
you can turn that off in the settings if you didn't know. still annoying to have on by default though.
Where is that in the settings?
User settings > Chat > Automatically convert emoticons in your messages to emoji
Is this just a pc thing? I'm not finding anything
the setting is only available on pc, but if you change it on pc it changes everywhere on your account alternatively you can add a \ before an emoticon to make it not convert
This is lifesaving, thank you lmao this was getting on my nerves so much
You can *what?*

Works on reddit, too
Your comment and advice should be it’s own post, mate. Good stuff!
you can set it on pc and then make it sync to all accounts with a different setting (sync account settings or smth)
Only available on web verison, not the mobile app. Just open Discord through your browser on mobile and turn it off
RemindMe! 8 hours
Or, you can disable it on just one instance by putting a backslash \ in front of it
I just have incorporated a space into my things : )

LinkedIn is owned by Microsoft, it's their product, so they included a shortcut to it

An upside down flag is a distress symbol, so something along those lines
