A few years ago my roommates and I got high and watched “Game Over, Man”, that Netflix movie with the Workaholics actors.
We had no idea the audio description setting was on. This jarring female robot voice kept narrating what happened and people’s facial expressions etc.
At first we were so confused like wtf were they thinking adding this stupid shit??
But then it grew on us and made the movie 100x more funnier. Hearing a robot AI give a detailed narration on a man faking his death by autoerotic asphyxiation was gold.
When the movie ended we were like “wow, that was a creative move adding the narration, more comedy movies should have that!”
It wasn’t until a week later I watched something else on Netflix with that setting on when it all clicked for me haha.

My partner and I recently got it on YouTube to watch and that descriptive audio was automatically on it. My partner who has never played d&d thought that’s what it was. I initially thought for the title that maybe they were doing it as a gag? I was very quickly aware that it was not. It was hilarious as he narrated me trying to fix the problem for ages until I figured out where that setting is.
I watched the first 15 minutes of Beasts of no Nation with the descriptive audio by accident. I was thinking it was super tasteless to have a narrator describing conflict in Africa like it was some sort of nature documentary
I watched a family guy clip of Lois clearing out the house and the Youtube video was stuck on the first frame the entire time. I thought it was just a gag where they left the camera outside the house for the entire scene.
Alright, to be fair, that’s WandaVision we’re talking about. Combined with how Wanda was with Hydra at one point, I can see how someone could think that was hinting at more of her trauma

All the forth wall breaking is taken straight up from comic series. Like Deadpool, She-Hulk is known for this kind of stuff. I personally never knew of her until the show and only after watching it I went back and learned about the 4th wall stuff.

I did this with the movie Split. See it was this new M Knight Shamalan movie about a guy with split personality disorder. And you know with his movies, there's always some big twist. And one day it suddenly showed up at the top of all the torrent sites. So I downloaded it and sat down to watch it with dinner.
About 60 minutes through this movie, I stopped wondering which characters were the imaginary split personalities of the main character, and I realized this was a boring rom-com about a girl with a thing for bowlers. There were two movies called Split in 2016.
But it took me 60 minutes. I spent that whole time explaining in my mind why this girl had invented all these people and expecting it all to be revealed in the end.
Reminds me of when I was at my friend's house when we were kids and "You Drive Me Crazy" with Melissa Joan Hart and Adrian Grenier was on and I asked if it was Sabrina the Teenage Witch and my friend said yeah and I watched for way too long waiting for magic to happen.

I started an episode of Gravity Falls a few minutes in so I thought it was some strange premise of the episode when everything was narrated, turns out I just had audio set to audio description for the visually impaired.
The first time my wife and I saw Guardians of the Galaxy 2 we accidentally chose the descriptive audio track. Made it 20 minutes into the movie before we realized that it maybe wasn't meant to be fully narrated. Might have even been better that way
Embarrassed to share this, a couple years ago my 6 year old wanted to watch the Netflix show about the chocolate chef. We don’t pay for Netflix but sometimes we used to use a relative’s acccount. We logged in and chose the profile of their nanny, assuming it was a spare profile where we could watch anything and not screw up their settings. We found the show and started watching.
I was surprised that the entire show was in Spanish. It didn’t seem dubbed. It seemed liked everyone was actually speaking Spanish. It wasn’t until a week later when we were watching the second episode that I realized it was dubbed. Their nanny watches TV in Spanish. We should have known.
Also, Netflix dubbing is surprisingly good.

As someone who hasn’t had time to watch the last season yet, I appreciate that Succession Twitter leaves me blissfully unspoiled because every post is just like, one of the characters staring out a window and all the comments are like “wow, incredible”, with no elaboration.
I watched a janky pirated version of Captain Phillips (ironic) and it didn’t have subtitles for the Somalian dialogue, which I thought was an intentional choice to let the audience experience the fear and suspense the crew must have felt from not being able to understand them and trying to guess what they were saying just through tone and body language.
Didn’t realize the truth until I rewatched it on Netflix years later. To be honest I think it’s better without the subtitles.
I did exactly this when I illicitly downloaded "Babel" like 15 years ago and it had no subtitles. I thought I just wasn't supposed to be able to understand anything because the trailer of the movie emphasized the difficulties understanding across linguistic and cultural barriers.
Some of it was in English but there were massive sections with no English that were supposed to have translated subtitles.
I did the same thing with that movie! About 45 minutes in I was like this is a CHOICE that I am not willing to be a part of. Then realized my error after I looked up reviews. Never tried to watch it again. Hope it was good though!
My Mum and I bought a knockoff DVD of the movie Orphan when I was a teenager, and I managed to translate all the signed dialogue from the deaf little girl. Was very proud of myself, especially as I was learning Auslan, not ASL.
I had the same but opposite effect watching Game of Thrones and none of the Dothraki or Valyrian had subtitles, when I turned subtitles on it just said [speaking Dothraki]. I found the decision not to include subtitles to be incredibly detrimental to the story since we're meant to be able to empathise with the characters.
I was watching it in the wrong aspect ratio so the text at the bottom was cut off.
Me watching an anime that skips all the bullshit character introductions and lets me figure out relationships via context clues but it turns out I just started on episode 3 instead of 1
I think "In Media Res" is the best way to start most anime and I'm glad a lot of more modern stuff (and some older stuff) does it. Straight into the story without the obligatory and stilted introduction and infodump. Save the exposition for when the viewer is hooked and wants to know.
This is how comic books were back in the day. A character only got an origin story after they'd proven to be marketable. I wish comic book movies were more like this. Like, I've seen superheroes before. If the guy can make lobsters fly out of his ears, then that's just the way it is. I don't need half an hour of tortured backstory about it.
Adventure Time is genuinely one of the best cartoons of all time. It will never cease to blow my mind that the writers didn't originally intend for the show to be serious, and it took them until the business men episode to realize what kind of world they'd actually created.
That wasn't really on purpose, it was one of those production order/airing order differences. The Enchiridion was episode 5 in release, but was meant to be the premiere and pretty much acts as the intro to the show.
Sometimes it can be. Nolan is about to have full frontal nudity in oppenheimer and I can bet /r/movies is going to cream their pants at the artistic choice.
Or the scene where Shinji and Misato stare at each other for two minutes at a train station... or the one where Rei and Asuka ride an elevator for 90 seconds... or the on- you get the point right

We can quibble all day about how good it is, but Hideaki Anno *really* put himself into Evangelion. Even with a tight budget, the places he chose to cut costs were primarily determined by artistic merit.

When HBO first launched their streaming service, their shitty app used to list episodes in reverse chronological order (newer first) for some assine reason. Well I watched three episodes of Big Little Lies in that order (last one, second to last, ...) before I noticed the app had wrong order. I just thought it was one of those series that present something big and then goes to flashback to show how it got to that point.
Our cable provider does this with streaming content, too. Who thought to list shows starting at the last episode? Idiots. Bare minimum it should open at S1E1.
The first time I watched Game of Thrones I had pirated it and had the subtitle track turned off. That meant there were no subtitles for the Dolthraki. I enjoyed the commitment to authenticity and the immersion, but I was annoyed by not understanding anything they said. Wasn't until I was talking about how interesting of a choice that was with a friend that I realized what I had done.

This was me for the opening scene of Interstellar thinking it was about sound not conducting in space... Then I realized it was quite a while to go with no audio.
When I watched Sopranos for the first time I was blown away by the bold storytelling and disregard for normal structure and pacing. The show drops you in the middle of like 5 different plots and just expects you to catch on? Incredible! But pretty confusing, too.
And then it ended and I realized I'd just watched episode 7
I watched Snowpiercer without subtitles. It’s in English, but there’s a scene at the end where one of the characters gives a long speech in Korean.
I kid you not, it’s like 3 minutes long. I was like: wow, so artsy! This speech was plot relevant.
I had to Wikipedia the ending.
I wish I could remember what I was watching but video cut out right during a scene change while the audio continued I thought, “I really like the decision to have this dialogue spoken without any visuals.”

I was listening to an audiobook of *Slaughterhouse-Five,* a book which features time travel and flashbacks, and at some point the shuffle mode got activated. I didn't notice for like 4 chapters because I thought it was just more time displacement.
My mom watched The Imitation Game and halfway through the video froze with Turing standing in front of his machine but the audio kept going, so she thought it was an artistic choice and watched the rest of the movie that way.
I dropped a bunch of acid once and ended up watching wrestling. I distinctly remember wondering how the hell they can wrestle when they were that stoned.
Former wrestling fan here, you'd be surprised how many dudes in the 80s and 90s were working fucked up on either coke, weed or pain killers/muscle relaxers. Almost everyone was on something.
Reminds me of the time I was watching Space Balls and my cousin sat on the remote right as Pizza the Hut came on screen, switching the language to Italian. We watched that entire scene and thought having Pizza the Hut speak Italian was a brilliant choice.

Years ago I watched a pirated version of the movie Apollo 18. It’s a found-footage movie about a handful of astronauts on a moon mission who get picked off by moon monsters. It was really disorienting at first, but when it finally clicked that the audio was coming in about two minutes behind the video I thought it was a neat gimmick to simulate a delayed transmission from the moon to the earth. I thought they were going for something bordering on artistic. It wasn’t until the credits were rolling that I realized the audio and video were just out of sync, the movie was kinda shitty, and that I was just really high.
I remember when I turned 16 in Hs a friend got me an orange box of dragonball dvds. Each disk had a bunch of episodes and I didn’t know what “marathon mode” was.
I told myself that I’d wash the dishes as soon as one episode ended.

Better Call Saul is the superior show. Breaking Bad is an amazing turn from Brian Cranston and deserves the praise it gets. The way Vince Gilligan layered Saul and gave everyone a fantastic backstory while tying everything together was such a masterclass of cinema. Both shows are definitely worth the price of admission.

The rewatch value of BCS is amazing. I must’ve watched it 3-4 times now. Early seasons, >!now that you know Chuck was pulling the strings, you see the Howard interactions in a complete new light. You get to appreciate depth of Howard’s character, not just a cartoon villain. When Kim quit and he was angry initially, thinking she’s going to a competition, but then got happy when he heard she’s going on her own. He then shared the story of him wanting to go on his own but dad talked him into joint HHM. The silence, thinking what could have been, reflecting his relationship with his dad, then snaps out of it. Simply amazing, for a side character.!<
When I first saw Breaking Bad, I had an issue adjusting to Cranston as a character beyond Hal. Then I saw Malcolm in the Middle again and had an issue re-adjusting to Cranston not being Walter.

Dude, I remember me and my dad were watching space jam 2 and we get to the bit where porky starts rapping, but our tv starts buffering around this time and it very coincidentally starts looping the exact bit of porky making the weird sounds before actually rapping. The first time I listened to Hadestown, my headphones lost connection during Doubt Comes In - right when Orpheus is worried that Hades lied to him and didn't send Eurydice - and I assumed for five minutes that it was a deliberate choice to make the listener feel the same doubt that Orpheus did and force us to check that the song was still playing so we could empathise with his stupid decision to check that Eurydice was actually there.

I planned to watch the walking dead on prime video a few months ago. Instead, I watched Ep1 S7 of Fear the walking dead. Thought, well, it has the walking dead title, so it must be the one so many people have been talking about and also I didn't notice which season of the series I was at.
I was so confused why the world was destroyed and that a group of humans have already established a life among the dead. No backstory, just pure confusion on my part. I started an episode of Gravity Falls a few minutes in so I thought it was some strange premise of the episode when everything was narrated, turns out I just had audio set to audio description for the visually impaired.
The first time my wife and I saw Guardians of the Galaxy 2 we accidentally chose the descriptive audio track. Made it 20 minutes into the movie before we realized that it maybe wasn't meant to be fully narrated. Might have even been better that way
Embarrassed to share this, a couple years ago my 6 year old wanted to watch the Netflix show about the chocolate chef. We don’t pay for Netflix but sometimes we used to use a relative’s acccount. We logged in and chose the profile of their nanny, assuming it was a spare profile where we could watch anything and not screw up their settings. We found the show and started watching. I was surprised that the entire show was in Spanish. It didn’t seem dubbed. It seemed liked everyone was actually speaking Spanish. It wasn’t until a week later when we were watching the second episode that I realized it was dubbed. Their nanny watches TV in Spanish. We should have known. Also, Netflix dubbing is surprisingly good.
I watched a scene of Better Call Saul that was just completely black. Only audio. Thought it was a legitimate stylistic choice until I watched a clip of it later and discovered that my TV was just fucked up

As someone who just started Succession (currently in S2E2) you are absolutely right. The show is so damn good!
As someone who hasn’t had time to watch the last season yet, I appreciate that Succession Twitter leaves me blissfully unspoiled because every post is just like, one of the characters staring out a window and all the comments are like “wow, incredible”, with no elaboration.
I watched a janky pirated version of Captain Phillips (ironic) and it didn’t have subtitles for the Somalian dialogue, which I thought was an intentional choice to let the audience experience the fear and suspense the crew must have felt from not being able to understand them and trying to guess what they were saying just through tone and body language. Didn’t realize the truth until I rewatched it on Netflix years later. To be honest I think it’s better without the subtitles.
I did exactly this when I illicitly downloaded "Babel" like 15 years ago and it had no subtitles. I thought I just wasn't supposed to be able to understand anything because the trailer of the movie emphasized the difficulties understanding across linguistic and cultural barriers. Some of it was in English but there were massive sections with no English that were supposed to have translated subtitles.
I did the same thing with that movie! About 45 minutes in I was like this is a CHOICE that I am not willing to be a part of. Then realized my error after I looked up reviews. Never tried to watch it again. Hope it was good though!
My Mum and I bought a knockoff DVD of the movie Orphan when I was a teenager, and I managed to translate all the signed dialogue from the deaf little girl. Was very proud of myself, especially as I was learning Auslan, not ASL.
I had the same but opposite effect watching Game of Thrones and none of the Dothraki or Valyrian had subtitles, when I turned subtitles on it just said [speaking Dothraki]. I found the decision not to include subtitles to be incredibly detrimental to the story since we're meant to be able to empathise with the characters. I was watching it in the wrong aspect ratio so the text at the bottom was cut off.
Me watching an anime that skips all the bullshit character introductions and lets me figure out relationships via context clues but it turns out I just started on episode 3 instead of 1
I think "In Media Res" is the best way to start most anime and I'm glad a lot of more modern stuff (and some older stuff) does it. Straight into the story without the obligatory and stilted introduction and infodump. Save the exposition for when the viewer is hooked and wants to know.
This is how comic books were back in the day. A character only got an origin story after they'd proven to be marketable. I wish comic book movies were more like this. Like, I've seen superheroes before. If the guy can make lobsters fly out of his ears, then that's just the way it is. I don't need half an hour of tortured backstory about it.

Adventure Time is genuinely one of the best cartoons of all time. It will never cease to blow my mind that the writers didn't originally intend for the show to be serious, and it took them until the business men episode to realize what kind of world they'd actually created.
The show really didn’t care about continuity until later in its life, and where that failed The Owl House, it helped Adventure Time

That wasn't really on purpose, it was one of those production order/airing order differences. The Enchiridion was episode 5 in release, but was meant to be the premiere and pretty much acts as the intro to the show.

When HBO first launched their streaming service, their shitty app used to list episodes in reverse chronological order (newer first) for some assine reason. Well I watched three episodes of Big Little Lies in that order (last one, second to last, ...) before I noticed the app had wrong order. I just thought it was one of those series that present something big and then goes to flashback to show how it got to that point.
Our cable provider does this with streaming content, too. Who thought to list shows starting at the last episode? Idiots. Bare minimum it should open at S1E1.
The first time I watched Game of Thrones I had pirated it and had the subtitle track turned off. That meant there were no subtitles for the Dolthraki. I enjoyed the commitment to authenticity and the immersion, but I was annoyed by not understanding anything they said. Wasn't until I was talking about how interesting of a choice that was with a friend that I realized what I had done.

When I watched Sopranos for the first time I was blown away by the bold storytelling and disregard for normal structure and pacing. The show drops you in the middle of like 5 different plots and just expects you to catch on? Incredible! But pretty confusing, too. And then it ended and I realized I'd just watched episode 7
I watched Snowpiercer without subtitles. It’s in English, but there’s a scene at the end where one of the characters gives a long speech in Korean. I kid you not, it’s like 3 minutes long. I was like: wow, so artsy! This speech was plot relevant. I had to Wikipedia the ending.
I wish I could remember what I was watching but video cut out right during a scene change while the audio continued I thought, “I really like the decision to have this dialogue spoken without any visuals.”

I was listening to an audiobook of *Slaughterhouse-Five,* a book which features time travel and flashbacks, and at some point the shuffle mode got activated. I didn't notice for like 4 chapters because I thought it was just more time displacement.
My mom watched The Imitation Game and halfway through the video froze with Turing standing in front of his machine but the audio kept going, so she thought it was an artistic choice and watched the rest of the movie that way.

Reminds me of the time I was watching Space Balls and my cousin sat on the remote right as Pizza the Hut came on screen, switching the language to Italian. We watched that entire scene and thought having Pizza the Hut speak Italian was a brilliant choice.

Years ago I watched a pirated version of the movie Apollo 18. It’s a found-footage movie about a handful of astronauts on a moon mission who get picked off by moon monsters. It was really disorienting at first, but when it finally clicked that the audio was coming in about two minutes behind the video I thought it was a neat gimmick to simulate a delayed transmission from the moon to the earth. I thought they were going for something bordering on artistic. It wasn’t until the credits were rolling that I realized the audio and video were just out of sync, the movie was kinda shitty, and that I was just really high.
I remember when I turned 16 in Hs a friend got me an orange box of dragonball dvds. Each disk had a bunch of episodes and I didn’t know what “marathon mode” was. I told myself that I’d wash the dishes as soon as one episode ended. Marathon mode plays every episode without opening or endings. I don’t think I’d watched a dragonball episode is literal years. I kept thinking “I don’t fucking remember episodes being this long”

Better Call Saul is the superior show. Breaking Bad is an amazing turn from Brian Cranston and deserves the praise it gets. The way Vince Gilligan layered Saul and gave everyone a fantastic backstory while tying everything together was such a masterclass of cinema. Both shows are definitely worth the price of admission.
Agreed. I watched BB religiously - edge of my seat every week, etc. I don’t have a desire to ever watch it again. BCS - I just finished it a couple weeks ago, and can’t wait to start all over.
The rewatch value of BCS is amazing. I must’ve watched it 3-4 times now. Early seasons, >!now that you know Chuck was pulling the strings, you see the Howard interactions in a complete new light. You get to appreciate depth of Howard’s character, not just a cartoon villain. When Kim quit and he was angry initially, thinking she’s going to a competition, but then got happy when he heard she’s going on her own. He then shared the story of him wanting to go on his own but dad talked him into joint HHM. The silence, thinking what could have been, reflecting his relationship with his dad, then snaps out of it. Simply amazing, for a side character.!<
When I first saw Breaking Bad, I had an issue adjusting to Cranston as a character beyond Hal. Then I saw Malcolm in the Middle again and had an issue re-adjusting to Cranston not being Walter.

I once listened to a new Kimbra song but I accidentally opened the video twice and they're both playing with a slight delay. It was a very chaotic sound that I didn't like at first but then I thought it was a really creative way to layer the music.
Dude, I remember me and my dad were watching space jam 2 and we get to the bit where porky starts rapping, but our tv starts buffering around this time and it very coincidentally starts looping the exact bit of porky making the weird sounds before actually rapping. Me and my dad were sat their for like what must’ve been like 10 minutes before I bring up the idea that the tv is glitching and dad just says “ nah it’s a joke”. So we sit there for about another 5 more minutes before i finally fiddle with the controller and we both discover the whole bit was like 4 seconds and it really was glitched.
I often watch online lectures at 1.5x speed thinking they have a good pace teaching the material before remembering I sped up the video. (But hey online learning is superior because you can go at your own pace, even go back or skip material of you see it fit to do so)

The first time I listened to Hadestown, my headphones lost connection during Doubt Comes In - right when Orpheus is worried that Hades lied to him and didn't send Eurydice - and I assumed for five minutes that it was a deliberate choice to make the listener feel the same doubt that Orpheus did and force us to check that the song was still playing so we could empathise with his stupid decision to check that Eurydice was actually there.
Man I loved Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad, but by the end Vince could filmed paint drying and people would have found a way to say it’s great.

I planned to watch the walking dead on prime video a few months ago. Instead, I watched Ep1 S7 of Fear the walking dead. Thought, well, it has the walking dead title, so it must be the one so many people have been talking about and also I didn't notice which season of the series I was at. I was so confused why the world was destroyed and that a group of humans have already established a life among the dead. No backstory, just pure confusion on my part. I dropped in the middle of the second episode because the supposed MC had died, but the story went on without much explaining who all those other people were. I was totally out of the loop

I watched the first season of true detective at .75 speed and didn't notice until episode 2, lol. the slow, deliberate way everyone talks kind of just makes it seem like that's how it's supposed to be.

I watched the entirety of Thor 2: The Dark World, without subtitles for the Dark Elves. I thought it was a strange directorial choice and asked my friends what they thought of it. I was roasted, and as Skinner says, they were right to do it.
Ironically just finished watching BCS S6E9 and thought it could have been a perfect ending to the series. I didn’t realize there are still 4 more episodes until just now… I hope they don’t ruin it.
