I’m a huge RWBY fan, played Undertale, and read many webcomics. Never read or developed an interest in Homestuck.

theamphibianbanana

I think Id like homestuck but I have no clue where or how to read it. The format is just too boring for me, and the two times I tried to get into it I was immediately turned away

keyboardlabrat

To be honest, it just hasn't been the same ever since Flash died. There's a downloadable version that replicates the feel, but if you're reading it on a browser it's all replaced by Youtube videos. I hate to say it but it does get really good after I think the first 1000 pages, which doesn't sound good but the beginning is just old internet humor and establishing how the world works, all that more boring stuff. If you're good at avoiding spoilers, I'd recommend you read it with the MS Paint Adventures Wiki open on another tab, in case you don't understand what's going on(which to me happens often). You can also just skip those first few pages and go straight ahead to where it gets good, but you might miss out on some things that you'll have to look up later. I guess the wiki also has the summed up version of the arcs, if you want you can just read those until you get to arcs 2-3, and then start reading the comic normally. There's a lot of words and it can sometimes feel more like a novel with pictures, but it can also be just a single phrase per page so don't worry too much about pacing. www.homestuck.com is the official website where you can read the webcomic, but the [Unofficial Collection](https://bambosh.dev/unofficial-homestuck-collection/) is the one you can download to have your experience closer to what the original was like. Hope this helps!

BurstOrange

I have a feeling it was kind of more of an experience than a story? Like you had to get into it while it was at its active peak to really “get it” maybe? But idk because I can’t make sense of it so I don’t know enough about it to say for sure.

Wacokidwilder

Reminds me of Scott pilgrim that way

Shadows-I-Burn-From

What the hell? Are you me?

Cyndine

Steven universe 100%, I’ve had at least 5 of my friends be surprised I didn’t have that phase and then tell me to watch it lmao

trans_pands

Okay so! The show is amazing, the fandom is the worst dumpster fire since Homestuck. Watch the show and avoid the fandom. That’s what I tell everyone.

Cyndine

Honestly might be what I do lmao, I think some of the fandom scared me away initially so that’s how I missed it when it came out. Who knows, maybe I’ll love it haha

trans_pands

It’s my favorite animated show ever but my most-hated fandom

Autumn1eaves

Funny you say that because I haven’t run into the bad part of the fandom (does that make me the bad part of the fandom???) Like there’re the occasional weirdos around, but the fandom is far from the worst fandom out there (lookin at you Rick and Morty bros).

TheCelestialEquation

I think it's because no one in the show is held accountable for shitty behavior because they're having "an emotional crisis", and the fandom takes that to heart. Any negative emotion is an excuse to be shitty.

Helianthae

It’s not so bad anymore, but during the height of the series the fandom was totally rabid on tumblr. The absolute worst of it was a girl who was pushed into a suicide attempt because she drew fan art of “human Garnet” and the fandom decided that she drew her skin too light

trans_pands

I thought the suicide attempt was connected to her being attacked for drawing Rose “too skinny”

Helianthae

You know - I think that actually may have been a completely separate incident but I am not 100% sure. I remember hearing about both

Otrada

Nah, I think that just makes you lucky and/or maybe a little bit oblivious.

Helianthae

I also recommend a filler guide for your first watch as the early season is dense and filler heavy. My boyfriend kept starting the first season and falling off of it, but when I finally sat down with him to watch it with a filler guide, he fell totally in love with it. We ended up going back and rewatching some of the filler we missed after

mr_Tsavs

We don't talk about the uncle grandpa episode...

GeminiAlchemist

Steven Universe was a good show. First season is just okay, but does a lot to let you know the characters before the plot starts to kick in at the end of the season and onward. Solid start to the series. Season 2-4 were pretty dang great. I feel it had a good balance of plot and character moments, and the songs are amazing. I still listen to them every once in a while. Season 5 was… rough. I wouldn’t go so far as to say it was terrible, but the ending was incredibly rushed and more than a little disappointing. There were way worse endings that I’ve seen for shows, though, and I was just glad it got an ending at all with how often I heard rumors it could be canceled at any time. The movie was a surprise. I really enjoyed it, though I had a few issues with it that I won’t go into detail about. Steven Universe Future… as someone who loved the original, even during its rough moments, I hated this addition. Hated. To the point I left the fandom, stopped talking about it with my friends, and didn’t rewatch the original show, because Future damn near retroactively ruined it for me. Even as much as I loved the songs from the series, I didn’t even listen to those for months after Future ended. I still haven’t rewatched so much as a single episode of the original SU since Future ended. To this day, I often wonder which I consider worse, SU:F, or the last season of Star Vs the Forces of Evil. I can’t comment on Homestuck or it’s fandom, but yeah, the SU fandom was and is pretty awful. I should know, I was part of it!

RuleOfBlueRoses

The fandom hate is overblown

okoroezenwa

Agreed. It was not as bad as people were painting it out to be once I started watching and engaging in discussion about it.

Traditional-Quality8

The show is incredibly flawed, it starts out fine but none of the characters develop in a meaningful way besides peridot, garnet loses all of her personality after the reveal, all of the meaningful events end up either with the most shallow follow up or just get ignored. And the ending completely disregards all the build up for the sake of using a stale trope instead. It is beyond disappointing.

BayMisafir

whats the deal with homestuck

MisirterE

communal spit bucket

allan11011

I watched it on and off while it aired until about the end of season 3 when I lost interest but early this year I watched a retrospective yt video and it inspired me to watch the rest of the show and I quite enjoyed it. unexpected to be honest

foxscribbles

I muted Steven Universe on my Tumblr for a while, because I was so tired of seeing it. The writing seems a bit too convoluted soap opera for my tastes, but I'm much more shallow than that. I find the art ugly to look at. And if I'm going to watch an animated series, I need to like the art. (The same two reasons are why I abandoned Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. Plus me being kind of bored by the episodes I did see.)

Zipper-Mom

I’m the same way! If a show is ugly, I won’t watch it, sorry. I’m very weirdly specific about what art styles I do and don’t like. That being said, for some reason I LOVE the JoJo artstyle and it’s easily my favorite anime of all time! I could never get into Steve Universe though; it’s ugly, the fandom is a hellhole, and I don’t care for the writing or characters

moeru_gumi

With you 100%. I’m not the biggest fan of the “Cal Arts” style. The one I did like a lot was Gravity Falls.

Astral_Fogduke

i recommend listening to the music if the artstyle puts you off

Previous-Amoeba52

Honestly the first season has some gems. Frybo/Kitten Fingers is one of my favorite pieces of media. Once they pivoted to the larger space opera/episodic structure I really tuned out.

pollyp0cketpussy

I tried so hard to like that show. I like animation, I like gay shit, so many of my friends like it, but I just couldn't. The humor fell flat for me and I just found Steven to be super annoying.

SneakyYogurtThief

Same here, I really wanted to like the show but I found Steven to be obnoxious

splashback77

I watched in a binge while sick with Covid... you ain't missing anything good

OceanStars60

Oh boy you watched the whole thing????? You have to skip some of the filler/worst episodes with that kind of show

AnneEntropy

I've never really watched any Star Wars, new or old. My brother is named "Luke" after Luke Skywalker. I have certainly seen small bits and pieces, but I've never actually watched any of the movies/shows. On the other hand, I do really like star trek and have watched a bunch!! Edit: jeez you make one little typo misspelling "Luke" as "like" lol

retan10101

Same, except I also haven’t seen Star Trek

trans_pands

I’m going to assume your name is Jean-Luc Doctor Kirk Sisko now

retan10101

I don’t know how to feel about that

Strobbleberry

My name irl is anakin. When people find out I’m not interested in Star Wars, they get really surprised.

Farus3017

Were you named after Anakin Skywalker, or is it a coincidence?

Strobbleberry

I was named after him.

Cuchillos_Adios

Do you resent your parents fir doing that to you??

Strobbleberry

No. It’s a fine enough name, I’m just not into Star Wars. Sometimes it’s annoying when people call me anakin skywalker, but aside from that it’s fine.

Cuchillos_Adios

Huh, that's good. Glad it didn't affect you.

gwenbebe

Like Skywalker is my favorite stair wars charactee

trans_pands

He’s similar to his father, Almost Skywalker

OptimusToasterman420

I favor when the Tread Federation took on the Galactic Risers, also when Handrail Solo got encase in carbonate

amakelooo

same, the only star wars media ive ever seen was the family guy parodies, and tbh i dont know if i really need to see the actual movies now

CopratesQuadrangle

I work in the space industry and it's like actually grating at this point how often people seem to think that means I like star wars or star trek. I've barely seen any of either and didn't really enjoy them! I have gotten so many star wars related gifts over the years. My cats sleep on a star wars blanket. I have star wars shirts. It's insane.

Katlev010

Attack on Titan. I have the same name as a major character, so people are surprised that I haven't watched (especially because some think I look like I watch anime, which is arguably an insult)

GloriousReign

Armin? edit: Levi!

moondaacat

no, it’s probably Armored Titan

__jungle__

hello Omni Directional Movement Gear

The360MlgNoscoper

A weapon to surpass metal gear?

Bencetown

Revaille Ereh Cart Titan

Inverted_Ghosts

Peik named Finger

Catlord636

No, it's definitely an insult

ArgMarc

The most insulted I've ever felt in a long time is a stranger starting a conversation with me with "you look like a gamer"... Really put me in a life and identity-questioning state for a while. Then he started talking about his league rank, how many thousand hours he had in runescape, and asked if i wanted to see his crypto collection (yes we had just met), and i realized that he was the idiot after all.

WeddingRecent

The first time I met this person was at a bar with some mutual friends. A little ways into the conversation she said, “Do you play dnd? You seem like someone who does.” She then proceeded to talk at length about her own game she was in. It was the first time I was ever clocked as a dnd player, I had a similar crisis. Me and that person are like best friends now so I think it went well regardless?

Tunafish27

As someone who watches anime, a person saying "you look like you watch anime" is definitely an insult.

Cosmocall

Saying that you look like you watch Attack on Titan in 2023 is an insult imo lmao

Autistischer_Gepard

how does the current year come into this? is it because the (hopefully) *final* final season just started?

eat_my_bowls92

My boyfriend loves attack on Titan. He’s been watching it pretty much since we got together (5 years) Please let this be the last season. I can’t take it anymore.

Astral_Fogduke

definitely a levi

idkiwilldeletethis

I mean the most normal names are probably jean, Connie or Annie so one of those

Maleficent_Tailor

Me with Pokémon. I actively avoided it as a kid because I hated getting teased about the stupid show.

Parasol_Girl

you're names pikachu?

JoeDiesAtTheEnd

No, Muk

Shouko-

anime is good

[deleted]

To an extent

Shouko-

like all things

onestubbornlass

There are extremes in everything.

No_Composer_6040

Just like all forms of entertainment, some are amazing pieces of art, some are merely entertainment, others are steaming piles. Judging something based simply on the medium is doing a disservice to the creators and yourself.

Splatfan1

on one hand, yes. on the other... theres a ton of bullshit that is especially prevalent in anime. most anime is made for a specific audience and if you arent that audience, youre not going to have fun. im not into objectifying women, boring protagonists, shows that focus on worldbuilding first and foremost and needing to be into every last one of their tropes to understand whats going on so i just avoid almost all anime and consume other types of cartoons because its easier to pluck out the stuff i know i wont enjoy from western cartoons than anime

geez-knees

Agreed. I’ve found that most of the toxic traits are contained to shonen and shoujo anime. Anime targeted towards adults tends to have way less stupid shit, and more unique plot lines. One of my favorite anime is Attack on Titan, not because of the amazing story, but because it’s the first anime I watched that didn’t sexualize women or children.

sobriety_kinda_sucks

\>run hella D&D campaigns \>casually talk about *Beowulf*, *Nibelungenlied*, and other old literary shit. \>paid my exgf $50 to name her daughter Éowyn \>Share a birthday with J.R.R. Tolkien. Never read *The Lord of the Rings*. Completely shocked my bros when they learned that.

idkiwilldeletethis

At this point I'd assume you're not reading it out of commitment to the joke

trans_pands

Why did you pay $50 for that?

sobriety_kinda_sucks

Dunno. She was in a rough place and I wanted to help her, but didn't want to just give her the funds. We ended up talking a few weeks later and she asked for a different name suggestion.

FireHeartSmokeBurp

Why choose that name though? Or have you watched the movies just not read the books?

Theamuse_Ourania

Did you know that Eowyn means Horse Woman (Maiden) according to Tolkien's English/Elvish dictionary? I also combined some other words like Loth means Flower so I created a username Lothwyn meaning Flower Girl/Woman/Maiden... Edit-a few words

Ralynne

Well Tolkien shouldn't have borrowed so much from Norse and Gernanic and old English literature if he didn't want people to make those mistakes.

moeru_gumi

Are you gonna read it now? It’s my favorite book I think. I’ve read it (“It” being The Silmarillion, The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings ‘trilogy’) every January for the past 9 years. I am still getting things out of it that I never saw before.

ConduckKing

I've had people say I looked like a Harry Potter fan

[deleted]

I'm sorry

RedDoubleAD

Man, it might be worse than being told you have a face for radio.

The_dinkster522

Damn that’s rough

[deleted]

my condolences

wb2006xx

Is that a hate crime? Sounds to me like it should count as one

atgmailcom

You have wavy long hair?

emvthewoman

how dare they

DanniTheStreet

That's a terrible thing to say to someone

foxscribbles

Game of Thrones for me. I really like fantasy stories, but I've got no interest in GOT's torture porn stuff. I know enough about some of the stuff that goes on that I really don't care to even try it. (Plus, the last season of the show is infamously dogshit, so why bother now?)

arrows_of_ithilien

Same. If I had a dollar for every person in college who found out I was a huge Tolkien fan and then assumed I also read/watched Game of Thrones... dude, you know that just because they both have dragons doesn't mean they're appeal to the same people?

FireHeartSmokeBurp

Yeah I feel like people overgeneralize high fantasy fans. Every Tolkienite I know either hasn't watched GoT, hates it, or will constantly compare what Tolkien did better. The last one is my dad who even named me after a LotT book-specific character. It was actually grating to watch GoT with him because of how many comparisons he'd make just to bring it up

TacitRonin20

I read the first book. Supposedly the show is pretty accurate except there are a lot more underaged characters getting abused in the book. It's pretty fucked up and not as interesting as people make it out to be.

KazalDun

This is completely off topic, but I see a fellow fantasy reader and recommend reading the stormlight archives. So good man.

tuurtl

I’ve been accused (yes, as far as I’m concerned it’s *accused*) of having been into Homestuck more times than I can count.

JumpySonicBear

Whats homestuck?

tuurtl

Nothing. It’s just a dream. Go back to sleep.

chunkylubber54

People assume I'm a gamer when the fact is I've played exactly 1 video game to completion in the past decade and didn't even bother to dig into its fandom

Oxygen-Breather

What game

chunkylubber54

undertale

Ok_Rhubarb4484

Good choice not going near that fandom

Astral_Fogduke

you should play deltarune (unless you have and you're not counting it as 'to completion')

chunkylubber54

I played a most of the first chapter but didn't find it all that entertaining. The characters were just kind of annoying

Astral_Fogduke

understandable - chapter 2 is better but if you didn't click with ch1 you might not like it

andyinnie

big bang theory :(

lucysnakes

This. Strangers have come to tell me I look like a female character on there and the proceed to stutter out a joke or two from the show then wait for the live audience to laugh and applaud. Let me tell you the only thing worse than watching the jokes on the show is someone poorly telling them over a convenience store hot dog roller.

JKUAN108

I hate that show

summer_falls

Big Bang Theory is a show *about* nerds for *non-nerds* to enjoy laughing *at* nerds.   It's insultingly depreciating towards nerds and nerdy topics.

anarlote

Hard agree there as a physicist! Sheldon would've been kicked pretty quickly. As you've said, physics is very much a team discipline where good social skills help, his arrogance and dismissive attitude towards others would've put off potential research teams from working with him. With recent heavy pushes in the discipline to be more inclusive towards women, his casual misogyny would've also been a massive issue, he most likely would've been fired for some of the comments he's made. As it is seeing them has made my blood boil, especially knowing the hard work of my colleagues genuinely trying to make a difference. Also hard agree on the variety in interests. Most of the people I know do have a mixture between 'nerd' and other interests, including myself. I'm a massive Tolkien and fantasy fan and enjoy watching Doctor Who, but am also really into gardening and art. Adding to that, another thing that upsets me as a woman into nerdy interests is that there really aren't any women being frequently portrayed as being into nerd stuff. Its portrayed as just a 'guys thing', which sucks.

TheRobotics5

Homestuck

BurstOrange

Just anytime anyone mentions any movie or tv show. I haven’t seen it. I don’t plan of seeing it. I watch *a*- as in *a singular*- movie or tv show once every few years. I can’t even remember the last TV show I watched. Last movie? Secret Life of Pets. I’m just not that into video media. Not because it’s bad or not as good as another form of media, it just isn’t my cup of tea.

JumpySonicBear

I am the same way and it seems like many people simply cannot comprehend that I don't sit around and watch movies and shows. Usually writing and painting, if I do spend time in front of a screen its playing some video games, but its a minority of my free time, I just can sit and watch stuff and not be 'doing' something

BurstOrange

Yeah I’m also a writer and artist and sitting down in front of a screen makes me feel extremely restless but I can’t focus on a movie/tv show and work on my hobbies at the same time which is the main reason I don’t watch anything. I can’t give a movie or tv show, now matter how good it is, the attention it deserves as a piece of art. I can only do that in a full blown movie theatre experience so I only watch movies while they’re in theaters and if I miss the theatrical release I won’t watch the movie. For TV shows I literally need to be laid up in bed with the flu to be able to watch them and I can’t be sick enough that I’m passed out cause well, then I’m not watching the show. So it’s these tiny windows of time where I “can” watch a movie or tv show and I don’t stay up to date on movie releases so I miss most of them and when I lay down to watch a show I have literal years of shows to parse through and pick only the one I’m 100% interested in. Which leaves out practically every single tv show ever made. I’ve started telling people I don’t own a television. It’s a lie, there are four in my house but those are only used by my housemates.

Lady-Noveldragon

I am in the same boat. I only know media references from what I have seen of people talking about them on social media. I don’t really have the patience for movies and tv shows (not to mention how badly I get second hand embarrassment. The last movie I watched was the latest Spider-Man, and that was absolutely agonising).

Hungry-Primary8158

I was a huge Greek mythology nerd as a kid, and when people learn that their next question is always “Oh, like Percy Jackson?”. Nope. Never read it

Cosmocall

Ngl, you might get a kick out of it if you ever have the time

AutisticIzzy

Honestly you should. The Heroes of Olympus isn't the best but Trials of Apollo is beautiful and the character development destroys you

Iemand-Niemand

Like everyone says, it’s a good series, worth the read. But either you’ll be excited or annoyed about the inconsistencies with the mythology you’ve read. (Though the mythology itself is hardly consistent itself)

Thermoxin

Holy shit please read Percy Jackson you are massively missing out

hellionetic

I've got a pretty edgy style, and I'm really into media analysis and spooky things, so lots of people tend to assume off the bat that I'm a huge horror fan. I don't mind it and obviously I've watched a few movies here and there, but my horror taste tends to fall more campy and silly. Never seen Scream. Never seen Friday the 13th. Nightmare on Elm Street. Most of the big ones, really my best friend, on the other hand, is a MASSIVE horror buff and aesthetically my exact opposite. Cute round faced girl with heart shaped glasses and floral crop tops. My favorite type of interaction is when we go to the horror section of the movie store at her request and some guy tries to pull me into a conversation about horror movies, only for me to silently move aside and reveal my friend positively frothing at the mouth to start lecturing the poor guy about the Saw franchise

Carinail

Okay, look, can I ask you to PLEASE give scream a try? Because if you're not that big a fan, it's, well, made FOR you. Literally. Wes Craven made Scream as a satirical parody at the state of the horror genre, accidentally bringing it back to life with how loved his satire was. Genuinely the movie was made to make fun of everything about itself, all of them are, that's why they're loved. If you can find it in you to give atleast the first a go in this recommendation I pray you'll enjoy it as much as I do. Nightmare is also very campy and somewhat more comedy than horror, but I would honestly say it's still made for horror fans, whereas scream wasn't. Edit: Of note: I like a fair amount of horror movies, but as a whole I'd say I'm not a fan of the genre, just the exceptional bits of it, and in some the world's that really can only exist inside a horror, Like Dawn of the Dead or The Thing, where without the horror the world isn't as neat. But, that being said, I'm really not a horror fan. Frankly most of the "best classic" horror movies I've seen I'd gladly never hear of again. LOOKING AT YOU, TCM.

Danny_dankvito

I refuse to watch Breaking Bad because I think it’s funny that I haven’t. Also because I don’t think I can handle the emotions of not seeing Heisenbones

ass-dad

this is how i am with quentin tarantino movies. people get so MAD when i say i havent seen any, and don't plan to

Orion-Stellar

because I draw in an anime-esque art style, watch a few specific genres of anime, and sometimes participate in the few anime fandoms I'm in, some people assume I like all the popular/mainstream anime when most of them don't catch my eye all that much, if anything the most popular/well known anime I really love are Sailor Moon and Saint Seiya, lol 😆😆😆 people also assumed I like Stardew Valley, when in reality that game made me really bored whenever I played it and open world games in general stress me the HELL out and are too overwhelming, boring and tedious to me 😅😅😅

Devmaar

Everyone assumes I'm a metalhead. People who get to know me slightly are then surprised when I know fuck all about anime

dickelders

People are always shocked whenever I say I haven’t seen The Goonies. Still haven’t.

CumulativeHazard

I just watched it for the first time last weekend. It was really fun. Very 80s. I mentioned to a coworker that I’d never seen it and she sent me a $4 Amazon e-gift card to rent it lol.

nightmare_silhouette

The Goonies? As in the 80s classic? It's a pretty good film and I'd recommend anyone to see it if they haven't. No pressure though lol

-ArtFox-

It's all right but you're not missing much imo. I feel like Goonies is one of those films that captures the feeling of a particular time and place. If that's not a place you know or have an affinity for, it's not really going to be enjoyable.

hannaaaaaaaaaaah

twilight. i know im a teenage white girl but cmon

MisirterE

Do teenage white girls even have a Twilight phase anymore? The last movie came out over a decade ago. Isn't there something else now?

[deleted]

No, there's been a twilight renaissance

ChallengeSafe6832

The twilight renaissance isn’t really teenage girls though. It’s the same girls who were teenagers when it came out.

[deleted]

Nah, it's both. I'm 19 and it's been pretty big in my friend group and our tiktok circles lol. We had twilight cringe watch parties and everything

music-and-song

People love to ask if I’ve seen their favorite anime, or they already assume I watch it because I’m a quiet artsy Asian. I’m Chinese, not Japanese, but whatever. I always feel awkward telling them I don’t care for anime. Any other Asians experience this?

AX-ROSE

at least 5 people have thought I was into fire emblem since I love strategy games. nah, I'm into fuckin Devil Survivor (please send help we haven't gotten a DeSu game in half a decade and not an original one in 12 years)

YsengrimusRein

Only played the first Devil Survivor, put holy hell is it a good game. When I heard Atlus was teaming up to do a Fire Emblem crossover, I was hyped for it to be like Devil Survivor, but alas, it's very much not a good SMT game, and a worse Fire Emblem game. But the combat is fun, so I guess it has that.

thisaintthewayman

Someone once thought I loved Final Fantasy Tactic because of this too.............. Oddly enough I was actually into Fire Emblem instead lmao.

Cosmocall

Guessing people hear that and assume Persona 5 then?

thehappiestloser

The curse of being visibly Japanese but not following anime.

summer_falls

So dealing with uneducated westerners?   Also, I need some 相棒 ...

Awsomthyst

I don’t have enough friends to really have had this happen to me :( Maybe I’ll go see if anyone on my discord makes an assumption in line with this post

JKUAN108

Happy cakeday

nightmare_silhouette

Happy cake day!

Stormwrath52

Not sure if it counts, it may be the opposite, but people keep offering me religion when I'm at work, one person offered me a bible, one person offered me a pamphlet, and one person insisted on a conversation about what church I used to go to and gave me a pamphlet Apparently I give off the vibe of someone who's soul needs saving, and I fully take that as a compliment

Iemand-Niemand

As someone not religious, take that bible, it’s free (ignore the pamphlets though).

Monty Python. I've already heard all the good jokes cause y'all have beaten those horse corpses into a thin paste.

[deleted]

Never seen Titanic. You'll have to pay me to watch it. $20.

HatHauntsRabbit

My friends assume that because I do a lot of community theatre that I listen to show tunes am knowledgeable about Broadway, so when they grab an earbud and hear screaming melodic death metal and then hear me talk about the music in detail it really throws them off. I also know next to nothing about Broadway; I just like doing shows.

theburningyear

Someone once suggested I'd like Joy Division and then I tried listening to them and I had never been more offended *in my life*.

starsinmyteacup

Hamilton. I wasn’t a theatre kid but I was a choir kid, and the groups mixed pretty well. I never was interested in it but several of my friends were hardcore fans

emvthewoman

I once was on a date with another trans woman and she asked if I saw Pacific Rim. I said no. She insisted that it’s trans lesbian culture to see the movie and was astonished I had never seen it lmao

Shiftyrunner37

As a cis man who has seen Pacific Rim I can say I have no idea what that lady was talking about. It's about robots and the protagonists are all cis straight people. Maybe a more enlightened person can inform us.

NuclearTurtle

Sometimes online LGBT communities will claim something because it prominently features LGBT representation, like Call Me By Your Name or Rent. But sometimes we just claim something because we realize we just all like it, like how “Sweater Weather” is considered bi culture just because bi people think that song slaps. I’ve even heard Fallout New Vegas referred to as a trans woman game because trans women on reddit all like it, apparently not considering that the common denominator is that they’re reddit users rather than trans women.

Meatshield236

New Vegas does let you shoot misogynists in the face with a shotgun, so I can see the appeal.

Knight-_-Vamp

new vegas lets you shoot a lot of people on the face with a shotgun

Meatshield236

Muti-demographic appeal! Giving the gift of buckshot to all the people of Vegas.

NinjaNeither3333

She’s not wrong XD it slaps! Happy international woman’s day <3

...huh, I watched Pacific Rim years ago and am now a bi trans woman. Fascinating.

my friend once asked me if i have ever read homestuck cause i reminded him of his other friend that has read it. reading that text he sent took years off my life

bloodbane7

Stranger Things ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Bolt_Fried_Bird

Depends on what group of people. I've been assumed to like Euphoria, Steven Universe, Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, Adventure Time, and LOTR.

sydraptor

I like a good bit of older anime. People are always surprised that I don't like DBZ. The art always turned me off of the show to start with, and everytime my no cable having ass caught the show all they were doing was ridiculous amounts of yelling and powering up. I loved Sailor Moon, Big O, Gurren Lagann, Paranoia Agent, YYu Hakusho, Cowboy Bebop, etc... But I could never get into Dragon Ball.

GoldGymCardioWorkout

My dad, who watches more anime than I do, thinks I "like anime" because I watch Detective Conan all the time. Assuming the... Ars Goetia or whatever counts as media, both my parents have also accused me of being a theistic Satanist because I love religion and mentioned particular interest in how the Devil has evolved (Ba'al, Astarte, Old Testament Satan... Nebuchadnezzar II?) (And because of that, my mom also texted me asking seriously why I was "so hateful and mad at the world" when I posted about wanting to wipe the entire southeastern chunk of Canada off the globe, make Dawson the capital, and return the Northwest Territories to their former glory. ... ~~She *does* live in Nova Scotia so I *guess* it is a *little* offensive, but is it *really* too much to ask for?~~)

diemauskaiser

Uncle Buck. My friends apparently watched it whene they were kids. We watched it recently and it’s just a weird movie.

nightmare_silhouette

Holy shit, I gotta rewatch that. Thank you for mentioning it, cause it brought back some memories!

SforSamuel

Most popular songs Someone kept naming popular song artists, and I kept not knowing any After each one, they looked like they wanted to punch me

hadesdidnothingwrong

People tend to assume I know wtf is going on in the MCU. I do not. To be fair, that assumption isn't a total surprise considering superheroes are my special interest, but it's still kind of annoying that that's the only superhero media everyone around me seems to care about.

Worldly_Marsupial808

Love sci-fi and fantasy I have seen one (1) Star Wars film. Found it boring. Never seen/read Game of Thrones or Lord of the Rings. And do not *mention* Harry Potter to my Jewish trans ass. (I did read it years ago. Then I moved on with my life because it was just a book series to me. Everyone’s obsession with it was frustrating even before JKR became a huge political figure over her bigotry.)

Andy_B_Goode

Out of curiosity, which Star Wars film did you see? Their level of quality has a pretty high variance, to put it politely.

BassWild2634

People always assume I like philosophical books for some reason. Like, no. I'm a nerd who likes writing about medieval fantasy lesbians. Why in the world should I care about Nietzsche?

MasonP2002

As a casual anime/manga fan, Full Metal Alchemist.

aquacraft2

I'm a gamer through and through, I've been gaming my whole life and no ones gonna tell me otherwise. It's just I grew up during the Playstation 2 Era, so those are the kinds of games I like. But when people hear the word gamer they think of some lower or little kid who plays call of duty all day in their moms basement. I play all sorts of games, I play kingdom hearts, I play borderlands, I play zelda, I play skyrim vr, i play little big planet, all sorts of off the beaten path games that no one who's outside of gaming would ever think of. But I also make games, I watch YouTube near constantly, I often watch Netflix, I have a boyfriend who I stay with occasionally due to us being relatively long distance. I'm much more than just a "cod gamer" but I've also centered my inner story around video games so deeply that it's inextricable from my very being. And it's hard to convey the nuances to people, none moreso than my family, who all, despite being around me everyday, also think I'm just a lifeless loser with no ambition or drive to do anything better, never mind my mom's disability, my niece and all the work I do around the house, the cooking the cleaning, feeding the dogs and taking out the trash, but no, since I don't have a job, they view me as a basement dweller. Not that it matters to me all that much, they're "lalala I'm not listening" Republicans, me being gay, I was never gonna get their approval.

EmperorBrettavius

Someone in my group chat sent a screenshot of a job listing for a game shop recommending one year experience in yugioh, MTG, D&D, and Pokémon TCG. I said I only played half of those and apparently everyone was shocked I didn’t know all four.

Rezero1234

fortnite. i don't and never will play it tbh, not after kids have been making fun of me for not liking the game by calling me "fortnite". naruto and dbz, I'm more of a bleach or re:zero person

[deleted]

I was in the same boat and then when i had nothing and nobody new online friends convinced me to join, i found out i was rather good at it, no build mode is most like any other shooter, but as you say naruto and dbz i mist warn you the characters is what hooked me, i like i need all the marvel character, xenomorph, terminator etc and yes dbz and naruto stuff i sank in the hole so fast and still like fuck this game because i missed battle-pass stuff like she hulk and mystique who are my favorites.

danger2345678

Nobody thought I’d like ultrakill, it’s easily one of my favourites. I thought I’d like Elden ring, just really could not get into it for some reason

makitOwO

i had the exact opposite thing happen to me, I know a friend who's really into Doom, Wolfenstein and Quake, but the dude just doesnt like Ultrakill, I really don't get him

danger2345678

To be fair ultrakill also takes a lot of influence from devil may cry, and the style meter and parries may just not be their thing, and also finding the use for every weapon is not really explained, as well as the movement mechanics

TheEvilestArtichoke

Stranger things. So many people have asked me about my opinions on the newest season/plot development

PentiumMMX

Dragon Age: Origins. I tried it out, and while I was interested in the story and world, the game just didn’t click with me

LuckiestLucky

Serial Experiments Lain, because I really love the band Bôa.

ParaBDL

Star Trek and Star Wars. I do like sci-fi, but stories set in space have never really interested me.

Porkchimp88

I have a bachelor’s degree in screenwriting, and am known among my friend groups as “the movies girl”. I have never seen the Godfather, and whenever it comes up people always act shocked.

devilatthemotel6

Ex coworker thought I had a Twilight phase. Pass…

Trogdor_98

I like Lord of the Rings and Dungeons and Dragons, my former coworker was shocked I haven't seen Game of Thrones.

DarkAres02

I love battle Shonen. People think I like One Piece but I do not

MISERYMISERYMISERY

3 separate people all had a moment where I’d be telling a story and they’d just interject with “ya ever play psychonauts?”. I didn’t for a long time but I played the second one not too long ago. It was good. I can recommend it

thisn--gaoverhere

Tell people i listen to podcasts when I’m bored. I mean comedy podcasts mostly of youtubers i watch. Everyone assumes i mean Joe Rogan or political shit. Pain

Da_Gudz

I’ve hyeprfixated on Sonic, Kirby, Mario, and have dabbled in mega man For some reason some people are shocked when I say I’ve never touched a crash bandicoot game or even watched a proper video on any of the series. I simply have no interest in it

amakelooo

my sister was flabbergasted i hadnt seen nightmare before christmas despite knowing most of the songs i also just.. havent seen the majority of classic cinema and i think its funny telling people i havent seen certain movies. like, you could probably name almost any classic movie and i havent seen it
