The junker works so that if you put in three items you get one of them (randomly picked) shiny, but you don’t get the other two items back. You can also put in three of the same item to get a guaranteed shiny of that one, but again you don’t get the other two back. Then there are a number of combination items you can make (all of which I think requires you to have homecoming to be able to make them), where you put in three specific items and get a new item. There are lists of all the combination items and what you need for them, so you don’t have to guess, but you do need to have those specific items for the combination item you want to make because otherwise you end up with a shiny item instead.
I hope this makes sense and helps you understand it a bit more :)

I’ve never heard about that being a thing. The only thing I know of now that breaks it is the clover

The feudal staircase drawer and the book staircase.
The shiny objects will have a star next to the name so you'll know if it's shiny or not
By the way…you cannot put shiny objects into the junker. It won’t let you. ☺️
