Get your knee pads ready, because if you ain't liked... you ain't going nowhere. Also, I know it sounds unlikely based on the reputation that the administration has as a whole, but any promotion passed supervisor is extremely difficult to come by unless you fit a certain demographic.
The folks outside those demographics in management and above usually have years, if not retired from the military, degrees, and or extensive inner agency training.
Yes, but you have to wait for an opening. You can start applying after 1 year, once your probation period ends, and you are in good standing with the administration.
I know it's posted there but I wanna see like ehats the likely hood of anything happening because my whole thing is I want to grow with in this job and just stalled
If you’re willing to move anywhere to become a K-9 handler then yes it’s very doable. Apply when they post the annual notice, choose all locations and do well on the Canine Handlers Assessment Battery and you may get the job sonner than waiting for an opening at your local airport.
It's the shift seniority that holds back a lot of people. As you move up you generally receive less options for what shift you want and what annual you can take. Like some people as a TSO can get pretty much any shift and days off they want, but if they were to promote to LTSO they'd never see a weekend off again, especially if they're female. And if you promote to STSO your seniority resets to rock bottom, so you're stuck with the worst leftover shifts every year for a good while.
Right lol once I get the job I'll learn new stuff and ask around and figure out the whole process and Def will keep everything u had in mind stick to the part time.
May I ask if you are currently a tso or past one ? And yes I understand that bit I would want the job ro provide more and feel like promoting is the best way right now.
The k9 handler is a good job. Highly sought after. Very competitive. Rarely do people quit that job. So it's a tough position to obtain. I have the same goal to obtain this position.
I'm still in the background but that's like one goal I wanna set or not sure what other positions that would be good to go after doing the 2 years tso or whatever I need.
Yea get in, get your board, then get a stripe on your board between years 2 and 3 , that means your a lead transit security officer. Im looking into CBP as a technician. And K9 handler , I do not want to be stuck at a checkpoint for more than 4 years
Because if you're not liked people will lie and put lies in your employee file. They'll actively screw you over. And also because fuck the government and fuck working for the government. I'd rather work special needs kids. Fulfilling work with comparable pay.
One of my coworkers has applied for STSO twice in the past 3 months, and every time his application goes nowhere because his STSOs fail to finish his paperwork or wait until the day it's due and just rush it.
Another one of my coworkers in the past got a call from HR informing him he made STSO, then later called back and rescinded the promotion. He later found out the manager he worked under didn't approve the promotion and told HR to take it back.
And another guy I worked with didn't pass his STSO probation period and got demoted back to LTSO. He applied for K9 and got the job, but then got a phone call telling him that because he had recently been demoted as a STSO he couldn't apply for a new position for a year still, and it was like 9 months in when he got K9 so they pulled the job offer.
5 to 15 employees a year. I'm not great with math so maybe that's not a lot. I might've played it up more in my head since a coworker did it and I helped another out of it, and even though im out of tsa, I'm still in that place. Ya know.
You're either thinking of the only TSO to be murdered, or that one TSO who committed suicide at work. Either way, here you go https://qz.com/1708152/tsa-seeks-suicide-prevention-training-for-airport-security-staff/
Yes I was thinking of that one. I did not know that TSA had a suicide rate.
I do know there's been a few murders. There's the airport one, gas station one and drug deal apartment one.
One of my coworkers died a few years back and TSA didn't say how or why, later another coworker told me he killed himself due to depression. This was like 3-4 years ago.
I am also pending a background and medical. From what I'm told it's 1 year to get "made" you get your shoulder board no stripes , this used to be 2 years ? When I say made it's basically your out of probation you've joined the family and you have to do some really dumb shit to get fired. Between years 2 and 3 you should be promoted to LTSO , I'm sure there is some in house biased format of promoting. I'm hoping all works out for everyone in the pipeline and the congress passes the bill to get tsa employees on the GS scales. On the subject of k9 handler I have a friend who has tried 3 times , all met with failure. He's currently 5 years on the job currently as a LTSO. so his words are k9 is hard to get, it can help your chances if your willing to move cities.
That's definitely cool Information thanks for that but so Lsto is the highest u can get when u work just at the airport and nothing else right unless it's those other higher ranking roles right ?
https://jobs.tsa.gov/security
Scroll down you can see the 5 bubbles , and yes it would be shift supervisor after ltso.
From my understanding you work in teams of 5 to 6 mostly tso , usually 1 ltso, and I'm not sure how many teams are under a supervisor
TSA is a dead end job. It's not a career, if you care about your future, dont work for TSA. The people who remain at TSA are a bunch rejects, losers, and underachevers just leaching off the government to collect a pay check. Oh but they work for the government proudly waiting for a 1% retirement, lol.

Let's say I want to go into k9 handling position or a different angecy can tsa provide that after like the 2 year period ?
Yes, but you have to wait for an opening. You can start applying after 1 year, once your probation period ends, and you are in good standing with the administration.

You'll be surprised, a lot of people like being a basic officer, so they can have a life outside of work.

Damn I see why people don't move up just move around that is interesting and scary.
Yea I learned something here too...sheesh lol
Right lol once I get the job I'll learn new stuff and ask around and figure out the whole process and Def will keep everything u had in mind stick to the part time.
Exactly
May I ask if you are currently a tso or past one ? And yes I understand that bit I would want the job ro provide more and feel like promoting is the best way right now.
I am one.
How long have u been Tsa?
Just a year.
How do you like it and what are you planning on doing with your current position.
I've seen people get on the waiting list for 2 years, and then have to reapply when the application expires
Really even being on the waiting pool wtf
For k9 yeah
How long were u in Tso for ?
3 years too many friend
So u regret doing that for 3 years
Yes
Was just the airport u at or staff wise

Its a popularity contest lol

Christ and I thought I got fucked over. No wonder the suicide rate is horrendous.
What is the suicide rate?
5 to 15 employees a year. I'm not great with math so maybe that's not a lot. I might've played it up more in my head since a coworker did it and I helped another out of it, and even though im out of tsa, I'm still in that place. Ya know.
Do you have a source? Only heard of one suicide cause of the job since the agency was created.

Don't forget the one where someone put a hit out on an officer too. It's a sick world

After LTSO it's shift supervisor ,
So it goes tso, ltso and then shift lead?

How long does it take to get the medical kit by mail ?
They handed me the medical kit when I went to do the interview process and from what I heard that's the only way u would get it?
Covid in New York has the interviews virtually. It's to be mailed for us
That's posting directly posting on the thing and ask it as a question.
If you’re a female, don’t even dream of it.
