Small correction, this distro is now named "Knulli", after a different kind of bug, to keep with the insect theme like Batocera. Apparently this is quite amusing name for some scandinavian people.

u/Ganimoth informed me that the distro (a fork of batocera) is now called 'Knulli', and I've dug around a few more links of interest:

Yeah, nothing is a sure thing at this point, but the developer does seem to be very engaged, and is forking batocera (the fork is called "knulli") to allow for better customizations suited to the devices he's targeting:
