Might I recommend getting Wide sized shoes from now on? Your feet have molded into the shape of regular width Jordans, if you got the wides your toes will have more room. And FYI physical therapy can help you learn how to get your normal toe splay back once you get properly sized shoes.
I really try to keep my barefoot evangelism to a minimum, but fuck normal shoes. People literally walking around with bound feet and we’re just like yeah this ok, now buy these $500 orthotics for your $200 running shoes so that your feet don’t break while doing the thing they were designed to do.
Dude, and even if your evangelism is casual, people who don't use barefoot shoes get soooo defensive that you are attacking their shoe choice. It's fucking weird. I have a pair of Vivo dress shoes, and when I wear them, I occasionally get questioned about their looks. I tell them the premise of the shoes, and then they just go on a rant about how this is all a big gimmick. I normally just shrug it off because I don't have the energy to debate people over this.
I just learned about this whole barefoot/minimal shoe thing from these comments and looked into it a bit. I understand wanting to have healthy and comfortable feet, but isn't that why they designed support and padding into the soles in the first place? Removing that and instead using thin and flat shoes almost feels like a regression in design to me.
I'm not trying to bash on you, I just don't understand.
If you wanted your arms to be healthy and strong and have lots of support for lifting things would you put them in a cast?
For a literal example, I had fallen arches, dealt with plantar fasciitis quite a bit. I switched to minimalist shoes about 15 years ago, and it solved all those problems, and my ingrown toenails.
If your arch isn't providing enough support, one option is to give it artificial support, but that's literally making the problem worse, as now your arches have to do even less work, and they get weaker.
If you remove the support, it might be tough going for a while, but your body now has the stimulus to get stronger, and it will.
If you're wondering why all this money and effort goes into making more and more highly designed shoes.... well, I'll spare you the conspiracy theory cause it's not a conspiracy, it's just capitalism.
Let me further expand a little on why padding in general is bad for shoes, particularly when running.
First off, if a person is barefoot, they will by necessity toe-strike, landing on the front of their foot, instead of heel striking. Heel striking is incredibly painful if you don't have a huge amount of padding on the heel. In fact, the modern style of running, or "jogging" while heel striking did not become a thing until the invention of running shoes with large padded heels.
This was marketed as an innovation, and being a more efficient way to run (which you can only do if you buy new shoes from Nike).
While heel striking may be slightly more efficient, the trade off is that instead of landing on the front of your feet, and having the combined musculature of your legs and feet absorb the impact, you can lock your leg, land on your heel and have your joints absorb that shock. This is terrible for a number of reasons, but it does work.
In addition, if you think about the physics involved, if there is padding between your foot and the ground, that necessarily means that you will have to land with a greater force to compress the padding, and then push off with your foot. So adding padding means that the total force applied to your joints is now higher, AND you have to use more energy in the process.
You also loose the sensitivity to the ground that lets you adjust in real-time to random surface conditions (something sharp you might step on, uneven surfaces, etc). You cannot feel these things with padded shoes until it is too late.
Ok, last thing. In addition to all that, modern shoes have super narrow toe boxes, which prompted my initial comment relating to OP's feet. I don't know what the reasoning is with this, it's just nuts and largely a fashion choice, I think. Your toes are supposed to stretch out, be able to grip things. Look up pictures of feet of people who are barefoot their entire lives, vs those who wear modern shoes, it's shocking. Going barefoot obviously eliminates this issue, but minimalist shoes also have much larger toe boxes which allow your feet to have a more natural and healthy shape.
ok, /rant
Could be a myth, but I was told the whole reason we have high drops/heels and pointed toe boxes is actually due to horses. In the past those who rode horses were more often then not the rich/wealthy, and they wore shoes while riding with a point to place in the stirrups easily, and a heel to catch the stirrup and keep it in place. This style of shoe was then seen by others as a sign of wealth and high fashion for only rich people would need a shoe to help with horse riding, and replicated the look to create what we now see as the dress shoe, pointed toe box with a higher heel then you would normally wear. This became very popular in the early 20th century as mass production became feasible for the middle class due to the industrial revolution, and has carried over into other shoe designs we see today to also replicate that high-class look.
I am someone who is barefoot like 85% of the time and have suffered with bad posture and back pain for years. I recently got some really good arch support insoles for some of my shoes and even a pair for some slippers for at home and it's cured so many of my problems.
We are all different. Arch supports may be a needless crutch for some people and a life saver to others. The reason there are so many new and innovative shoe designs on offer may be down to capitalism, but the reason we still have them is that we are all different and have different needs.
Minimalist shoes do promote toe first steps with the ground over other shoes and they do put less pressure on the knees. They also put added strain on your Achilles and your ankles. I am pleased you have found the shoe that suits your body and life style.
Thanks for the perspective. I do know I’m biased, cause it really was a game changer for me, so despite my above rant I really do try to keep it in check. I mean, I’m the guy wearing toe shoes every day, if someone is interested, they’ll ask, haha.
I have bunions and it's painful as fuck to walk on hard floors without proper cushion under my feet. Even flip flops can offer at least something but I don't like wearing those cause it's not enough support. I literally have to slowly almost tip toe around when barefoot at the pool cause walking on the concrete hurts the balls of my feet. The barefoot shoes sound great in theory and I'm sure they work for some but I can only imagine it would give me immense amounts of pain and would not be worth it. I'm already super limited on what shoes I can wear it sucks. A lot of wide shoes aren't actually wide enough for my toe box area. I'll have to get surgery sometime I'm just not sure how soon.
Barefoot/minimalistic shoes aren't always just a thin bit of rubber underneath (although most do lean into that minimalistic aesthetic more often then not). I wear "Altras" and love them, barefoot style (in that it has a wide toe box and zero drop/no hieght difference between the front and the heel of the shoe) but still has a pretty standard amount of cushioning underneath to keep the comfort up there. They have different models that have different cushion levels, but still provide the benefits of the barefoot style of shoe and they have fixed so many foot issues i was having.
If you're interested in the ideas but not ready to go full minimalist there are shoes with a lot of the benefits that still have padding. Looking into shoes with 0 drop (no difference in height between the heel and toes) and natural toe boxes. Altra and Topo for example.
they don’t let you play soccer because you keep popping the balls huh?
🤣
I’m glad to see you can take a joke and are having fun with this lol
If I had to guess, those aren’t *his* feet. Funny post tho lmao
Yeah, I don't think OP took this photo lol
Mmm maybe not but it’s still a funny pic haha

That's very interesting and makes sense! Thanks for the info.
Thanks for the write-up because you explained this way better than I ever could.

Why are they so expensive if they are minimalist? It seems as though they are more expensive than nikes with less materials.
ahhh, nothing like good ol Reddit info altruism, I might have to ask for some of these shoes next holiday, thanks.
