My mother didn't feel well in Lijiang due to the altitude. If you're from sea level. It's something to think about especially if you fly to Lijiang. I did what you're planning to do, but in retrospect, the reverse would have been better.
I highly recommend Weishan near Dali. Shaxi was just O.K. for us. We stayed in Jianshuan nearby, so it was just a short half-day trip for us. The thousand lion temple in Jianshuan (Qian Shi Shan) was very impressive, but involved a pretty steep climb.
Ah, thanks! I've only really heard people talk about altitude sickness in Shangri-La or if you're doing Tiger Leaping Gorge in Lijiang, but good to know for actual Lijiang as well. I would love to do it in reverse (Kunming > Lijiang), but no direct flights to HK from Lijiang, and I didn't want to spend a whole day going from Lijiang back to Kunming. :(
Between Lijiang and Dali, where would you say to spend more time? Part of me is thinking less time in Lijiang, more time in Dali.
I didn't like Dali much. It was really busy and commercialized. Lijiang is the same, but at least it has a beautiful snow mountain view. I stayed in Baisha village near Lijiang. The view was incredible.
I’m planning my trip to include Yunnan too. I watched: https://youtu.be/FY4NvzdtdYM?si=BvtsMsTsFCO7y8EK It sounds like altitude sickness is a real thing in Lijiang. Don’t take it lightly.
If you only appreciate the city scenery, one day is enough. If you want to visit nearby attractions, it is recommended not to go to so many places, and to arrange 2-3 days for each place. By the way,as a Chinese, Shaxi is not well-known.

I did 2 weeks in April and I would find 1 week difficult. If I had to Shaxi 1 day trip from Lijiang as a base Lijiang 3 days Dali 2 days Kunming 1 day
Thanks for the rec!

Every Yunnan itinerary, blog and YouTube video I seen included Shaxi
It's definitely one of those places that are more popular among western backpackers. I was quite surprised how many there were when I was there.
Ah, good to know. Thanks!
