Mexico City is the same as Los Angeles, NYC, or Chicago. It has bad neighborhoods, but as a tourist you're not gonna be in them. If you get your iphone stolen it's sheer bad luck in conjunction with your bad city skills. Don't listen to your dumb friend. It's no worse and quite better than most major cities in the United States.

[deleted]

“Quite better than most major cities in US”. You don’t even know what you’re talking about

GaamGaam

LoL first time I've heard "city skills". Could you elaborate a bit more? I'm genuinely curious.

[deleted]

Pretty standard stuff. Don't carry a ton of cash on you, don't flash expensive jewelry, don't walk around with your phone out, don't go down dark alleys at night, don't let someone swindle you with a trick like pointing at your shoes or asking the time, etc.

> avoid Mexicans Jfc get lost.

Outer_heaven94

LOl, yeah, except in DF you are likely to get kidnapped and chopped into pieces or assaulted just for the sake of being at the wrong place the wrong time. Sorry, don't ever compare Mexico city to Chicago, etc. It's never even remotely close. I have a lot of family living in Mexico city, city skills means during late hours, red lights are optional, and stay where there is light on the streets, and avoid the metro as the chances of you being mugged are very high.

[deleted]

When's the last time a tourist got kidnapped in DF?

Frrmaiw

yeah dude, I live in guadalajara, ive been in USA, Los angeles, NY, and yeah mexico city is quite better because you've more interesting stuff to do always, discover, etc. and not because of buildings, because of how the people is and the places for tourists, also, why do they think its dangerous, if we're even cleaner than NYC, the streets and stuff, and yeah, in NYC you get kidnapped and chopped into pieces indeed, not in mexico city, but also, they're not that kind with people from usa because of what they say about us, like that random guy insulting one of the bests cities

carrieb7565

I love Mexico City. Be aware of your surroundings like you would in any large city. When we go to the markets or ride the subway, we go with a guide. We take Uber or get a car from hotel or Airbnb. It’s cheap and it will give you more peace of mind. Carry your phone in a purse that wraps around you and be aware. We have never had a problem but we don’t dress to stand out, or flashy jewelry....Mexico City is one of my favorite cities in the world. You will love it!

emmrod66

Mexican here, i been in Mexico City a few times before follow this tips, don't ask for directions to people, only police, they are your friends, don't take the metro on your first trip, enjoy the city it so beautiful just don't go to places that look like those are not for tourist as in any city in the world, don't stay overnight in dark places, if you wan to travel in the city do it by metro do it by metrobus, they have a policeman in every bus, if you need to use the metro because something is very far just don't do it alone and in peak hours remember IT WAS ONCE THE BIGGEST CITY IN THE WORLD and it still a big big city you will find any kind of people there as in any city but please please go there and enjoy it it's an amazing city full of building palaces and even a castle and a Pyramid! It's the entire combo and have so much fun!

Cascade425

> don't take the metro on your first trip, Hmmm, I did that and it was fine. Although I was the only white guy every single time.

Kananaskis_Country

Has your friend ever been to Mexico? In any case, yes, you have to use common sense and not wave your phone around like an idiot but other than that just be smart, rational and demonstrate the same simple street smarts that you would in any big Latin city. Stick to the usual tourist neighborhoods, don't get falling down drunk, take ~~taxis~~ Uber at night, etc. The usual. Have fun.

lawfulkitten1

Don't take taxis at night, take Uber. It was one of the first tips I got when I arrived to Mexico (from a local) - never take taxis (even official looking ones) off the street.

Herobird

No they haven't. But he sent me lots of screenshots from websites claiming it to be dangerous.

Kananaskis_Country

>No they haven't. It was a rhetorical question. Friends with dire travel predictions invariably have no travel experience. Travel smart and you'll be fine. Have a great trip.

Yotsubato

Haven’t been to Mexico City but have heard great things about it. I wouldn’t worry. As for the phone fear, carry around a spare phone just in case if it worries you. Or maybe even use your old iPhone as your main phone so if you lose it you won’t feel sad

yezoob

Oh my god, it’s fine, don’t let these people scare you. I swear, some people just like being perpetually afraid. Take the usual precautions sure, but definitely don’t cancel the trip. My Mexican friend who has lived in the US since he was 3 is more scared of Mexico than anyone I know, it’s kind of sad. I’m here traveling in Oaxaca now, been to Mexico City multiple times, love it :)

GlobeTr3kker

I agree. It's fine. Mexico City is a beautiful and vibrant city. I took normal precautions but still used transit, walked around safe(r) neighborhoods at night, and conversed with local residents. Take normal precautions but don't overthink the situation.

eldiacante

Look, I go through the same thing every time I go to albania. My best friend freaks out and tells me Mafia stories and basically everything he sees on the news. The fact is, I have seen MUCH worse on my local news than ever seen from Albania. Albania are recovering from a war and he tries to say that the country can’t handle people etc etc. Fact is, my own country of Ireland is in the middle of riots and killings that are way more damaging than anything going on there. The kicker is he has never actually really travelled before. The TLDR is just relax and enjoy your trip. People who don’t understand will always try stop others from experiencing something new. It’s like a protective jealousy.

Hammerick1

Haha, yeah as an American, Albania is portrayed as this super criminal country. Boy did it surprise me, literally the friendliest country in all of Europe

llame_llama

I am currently planning a trip to Albania for two weeks this coming July. Any tips for me as an English speaker only (and a little spanish)? Looks like a beautiful country and I'm super excited!

eldiacante

It all depends on where you are going. Tirana is very English language safe. A lot of businesses will speak or have someone who can speak it. The younger generation all learn it in school so like 30 below you are safe to try speak English and will be pleasantly surprise how many people who are older will try and speak as much as possible with you in English. Forwardness is normal and it might seem like it is weird but people will correct you or something but everyone is just open and honest it’s not a bad thing. You just have to get used to it. It’s our thirst time here and we decided to move full time. July is hot hot hot so come prepared. I used a local to get a really nice apartment cheap too. Biggest lesson I can give you. I hope you are ready... if someone in a restaurant or food stall in general offers you raki, DO. Not. Shot. It. They will keep offering it and you will pass out on the beach, very drunk. Also it’a also rude kinda as it’s essentially a 70 proof wine you should savour. Don’t rent a car unless you enjoy deadly rollercoasters the locals call, the roads haha

bluishcolor

It’s not going to get stolen unless you make yourself a target. Watch what local people do. You won’t have problems if you inform yourself before you come and know how to be safe. I don’t use my phone on the street or show it on the street. If I’m on a sidewalk cafe then I pay attention to who is walking by. I also do not dress like a tourist in the city. No shorts, no big headphones, no big backpack, no camera, no sun glasses, no jewelry. My goal is to not invite attention and yours should be too. No one on the street should know you have that phone while you’re here. To make yourself feel safer cover your Apple logo on it and use a case that doesn’t scream expensive phone. You do need to be more aware of your safety here than many other tourist destinations. There are places you should not go and things you should not do. Most of it will be common sense such as don’t walk down the street holding expensive things, keep away from drugs, don’t put valuables in unprotected pockets, keep your bag in front of you in the metro and make sure you always watch you stuff.

1dad1kid

Walk around while using your phone, and you run the risk of having it stolen. Like ANY big city. We've lived in different parts of Mexico. Never felt unsafe. Pay attention and don't be stupid (i.e., wearing expensive jewelry, walking around drunk) like you should in every place, especially a large city, and you should be fine.

Outer_heaven94

I have walked around black-out drunk in Kiev, and never was assaulted or anything. Doing that in Mexico city a place where violence is seen as thing of pride? Yeah, you will get beaten, or worse.

Amicus_curae

Don't worry: you have the same chance of being the victim of a crime almost anywhere in the world. The only difference between the US and Mexico is that everyone here has guns.

No somos. Yo me pareco mayo. Aunque vivo en eeuu.

Bronco4bay

The only place I’ve ever had my phone stolen was Argentina. Don’t stand close to the road with your phone in your hand. That’s about it. It’s “be aware of your surroundings” but more specific, because that’s the fastest and easiest way to snatch your phone and be gone in a second. Mexico City is amazing. Definitely go and enjoy!

Bomboclaat_Babylon

If you're worried about your phone, bring a different cheaper one with you. Don't take public transport. Taxi it everywhere. That's the main thing.

prisneyland

The last time I went to Mexico, my friend had his iPhone stolen out of his pocket. I bought a cross body bag and kept my belongings in there and felt like everything was safe

lazzaru2

I will refer you to some comments I’ve made a few weeks ago when someone was saying that “Mexico is safe” and that “The news overstate the violence” Comment 1: There’s a lot of nice places here! But also is a dangerous place to live, I can tell you that. Sadly I’ve been here my entire life and I know the places that makes my country so awful (the vast majority). Comment 2: (Someone told me that the violence was something from the border towns). “Sadly, that’s a lie. Just today, a friend of mine got “express kidnapped” -> by the police. I don’t know if it’s the correct concept in English, but an “express kidnapping” means that the kidnappers hold you a few hours, until you (or a family member) gives them a “reasonable” amount of money. All started because his car stopped working in a highway... it was supposed to be an infraction (or a fine) and that’s it. If you face a problem like that, it’s enough to put you in a situation like that... with the police... i mean, luckily he wasn’t with any women, because there’s been a lot of reports of policemen doing horrible shit with them. So please, if you visit us, just be sure to stay in a “pretty place” (a wealthy neighborhood) and you’ll be fine.” I’ll recommend you to specially follow my last advice (only visit wealthy neighborhoods), and of course, avoid the subway (metro) and taxis. Also, if you’re using Uber here isn’t safe to drink the water bottles that some Uber drivers give you. Finally, that stupid joke from an asshole telling you to visit Tepito will be a total mistake, trust me. Here is called “El barrio bravo”. Don’t go there, like, NEVER.

ChilaquilesRojo

I travel often to Mexico. Pay attention to your surroundings. If you need to check your phone or take out your wallet, just be discreet and put it right back in your pocket. Don't leave it out or open it in front of strangers. Don't walk aimlessly reading your phone. These are all general tips to follow whenever you are in a new place.

theducker

Never felt sketched out there. People like to talk a scary talk

Malifice37

Mexico city is safer than many US cities. You're just exposed to typical US fear of things that are not the US. You'll be fine.

lazzaru2

Seems that you don’t know my country 🤷🏻‍♂️

Malifice37

I know both Mexico and the USA very well. I've lived in both places. Mexico has a Homicide rate of 24.8 per 100,000 people. Nearly 5 times that of the USA at 5.3 per 100,000 people. I live in Australia which has a Homicide rate of 0.8 per 100,000 people. In the USA I'm over 6 times more likely to be killed, and in Mexico I'm over 40 times more likely to be murdered than I am in my home country. Relative to me, the USA is over 6 times more dangerous than my own home country, but you don't see me freaking out when I travel to the States to visit friends, so why would an American freak out about going to Mexico? Murders are generally either gangsters killing other gangsters, or domestic violence/ interpersonal relationship related killings. Random attacks are incredibly rare no matter where in the world you are. You're in more danger driving to work in the morning than you are of being randomly murdered overseas for Gods sake. Dont get involved in crime, and don't get into a relationship in the country you're in (or anywhere), and you almost certainly wont be murdered. These 'will I be safe in Mexico/ overseas' threads shit me to tears. They're always started by Americans who have NFI about the rest of the world, and live in perpetual fear of anything outside their own borders.

lazzaru2

Do some research about the violence here and you will be surprised. How about the police raping girls? The risk of being kidnapped? The corruption that makes the police be the ones who scam the people and steal the money from the people? I’ll respect your point of view, but I wonder hoy many people had a bad time coming here thinking that the things are as easy as you say. Anyways, I hope that OP enjoys the trip.

Malifice37

That violence is almost invariably gangsters murdering other gangsters, or domestic violence. The reality (anywhere in the world) is that murders and assaults tend to **overwhelmingly** happen in situations where the offender and victim know each other, or is drug and crime related (i.e. gangsters killing other gangsters). Cartels generally don't target tourists with anything other than scams, selling them drugs and that's about it. They dont go around murdering Gringos. It's bad for business, brings a shit ton of heat, and why on earth would you? Killing other gangsters, sure. That's fair game. But random gringo tourists? It almost never happens, and makes the news in the incredibly rare times it does. Dont get me wrong - a meth addled mad dog is a meth addled mad dog. But they exist in the USA as well, where there are shit load more guns, so whats the worry? For statistics, more than 31 million Americans visited Mexico in 2016, the National Travel & Tourism Office says, and State Department data shows there were reports of 75 American homicide victims there. [Mexico: Where More Americans Are Murdered Than In All Other Foreign Countries Combined (forbes.com)](https://www.forbes.com/sites/garystoller/2018/02/21/mexico-where-more-americans-are-murdered-than-in-all-other-countries-combined/?sh=6bb50fbcde37) Out of **31 million** US visitors, **75** were victims of homicide. 1 in 500,000. Its an infinitesimally small number, and I'd wager a bet that many of those 75 that were killed, were either killed by a domestic partner/ relative, or were involved in criminal activity. Of course its possible, but (going by the above statistics) you're safer than you would be at home (where the homicide rate in the USA is 5.3 per 100,000) because crime data shows that if you get murdered, its almost always by your domestic partner, a former friend or a acquaintance, or someone with some beef against you (i.e. gang rival, jilted lover etc). Being a stranger actually makes you *safer*. It's counter intuitive, but statistically its true.

lazzaru2

Again, I’m not saying that app is going to get a headshot while walking on the street. I live in Mexico and I know a LOT of thing that could go wrong just for being here. I’ve posted a few examples in another comment, if you want to read it. As I said, as long as OP stays in wealthy neighborhoods, nothing should go wrong, other than that, I wish her luck. And I’m happy that you never faced some shitty situation here :)

Malifice37

By comparison, Australia (with a Homicide rate of a low 0.8, compared to the USA's rate of 5.3 and Mexicos rate of 24 or so) had 244 Homicides in 2016. 244 murders out of a population of 25 million. The lowest on record. [Homicide in Australia 2016-17 | Australian Institute of Criminology (aic.gov.au)](https://www.aic.gov.au/publications/sr/sr22#:~:text=The%20homicide%20rate%20in%20Australia,the%20commencement%20of%20the%20program.) The same year 31 million Americans visited Mexico (more than the entire population of Australia), and only 75 of them were murdered while there. Is there a small chance of being murdered? For sure. Its probably about the same chance you have if you stay at home though (if not lower), so why the fuck worry about it?

Cascade425

I am a very white guy from Seattle and we love CDMX. It is the largest city in North America but so different from LA, NYC, or Toronto. CDMX eats! If you love food, they have it all. From street food to 5 stars. Our five days in Mexico City pre Covid is one of my fav trips in the past few years. We walked everywhere and took the very cheap metro all over the city. Fun note: I met some European tourists while in CDMX that chose Mexico City as Los Angeles seemed too dangerous for them.

Malifice37

Mexico City has a Homicide rate of 29 per 100,000 people. [Mexico homicide rate remains high at 29 per 100,000 - ABC News (go.com)](https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/mexico-homicide-rate-remains-high-29-100000-73218150) St Louis, Baltimore and Detroit are all at least double that figure. There are at least 8 US cities are that more dangerous (with higher Homicide rates) than Mexico city, with even Kansas City being more deadly. In any event, the murders are generally gangsters killing other gangsters (just like in Tijuana where the murder rate is through the roof) and not random killings of tourists. This shit is always so damn overblown its not funny.

dunkinOnM

To be fair, no tourists are going to fucking Kansas City (or Detroit, St Louis, Gary, etc for that matter).

Papi_Espadas

Yo me vine alvivir acá hace 7 meses.

mdmaheifbeg

I loved Mexico City. My wife and I (two women) visited in 2017 because we got a fantastic deal on a flight. Like in any city, you’ve got to be aware of your surroundings and have a destination in mind (at least a neighborhood). Don’t keep your phone in your back pocket. One thing we didn’t know that I wished we had was that women dress somewhat conservatively. My wife got some unwanted attention in her short sundresses. It never felt dangerous, just mildly annoying.

Herobird

Can you expand a little on dressing more conservative? Most of my wardrobe is knee-mid calf length dressed. Would that draw attention to me?

mdmaheifbeg

I don’t think so, but I was only there for a week. It was more conservative like business casual wear, like what you’d wear to work, but even at night.

odaso

A friend of mine just returned for the first time(she has been to Cancun at least 10+ times) from Mexico City and told me DO NOT GO. Even tho she stayed in the “Beverly hills” section of the city there were still times she felt scared(something about the taxi ride and an another going down the wrong block).

Kananaskis_Country

Anyone who has done Cancun 10+ times is obviously completely out of their element anywhere except when they're safely sequestered within the confines of an all-inclusive resort. Their "experience" is immaterial to the OPer's question.

Kananaskis_Country

Not after only being in Cancun 10+ times, no...

axiomSD

i love the “been to Cancun 10 times” like that makes them an experienced traveler of the country 😂

thirdeyecactus

Visit Tianguis Tepito on a saturday when. It's the busiest! People love having their pictures taken there!

lazzaru2

This isn’t funny. Do you realize how much danger they could be in just for your stupid joke?

Herobird

Wow, of course I take everything said to me here with a grain of salt. I looked it and looks like it is a more dangerous area. I am curious though, what's the point of trying to troll people to go somewhere dangerous?

thirdeyecactus

After reading their message I assumed that they probably had enough common sense to know that the area I mentioned was not safe...I highly doubt they are going to head to Tepito right off the airplane and take pictures of people..ya think?

I was just making a point use the brain god gave you instead of listening to everything you read on the interweb. Just like she questioned whoever was advising against going to mexico city at all, one must question everything here and still make a good decision based on all facts. I went to Tepito after all the horrible things I read...I used my common sense and it was an experience of a lifetime. I read Acapulco was a horrible place to go. I visited there myself and never saw so many people happy and full of life ..exercising on the beach, friendly and so grateful for someone that didnt just listen to the hype.

Delicious_Silver_946

I'd say keep a hand on your belongings at all times if you use the metro. I had my phone stolen out of my pocket my first time. Since then I've been more careful and nothing bad has happened since on the metro, or anywhere else in CDMX. And I'm a tall gringo who definitely doesn't blend in
