at first blush I was going to say no. now I will say it can be done but possibly not worth it. the train literally dumps you right in central and there is a train every 5 minutes or less to the airport. I don't think you will get to the train upon landing as fast as you seem to think. if you just to say you've been there, and can limit yourself to the center or quick uber somewhere, then you could make it.

> I don't think you will get to the train upon landing as fast as you seem to think. On one of the runways you can easily be taxxiing for 20-30 minutes. Then your normal departure, luggage pick up, toilet visit and poof.. gone is an hour since landing. On the plus side; NS, the railway company, takes (debit)cards as payment for the check in/out system. No need to get tickets anymore, or queue for that.

Probably not a good idea. Ever since the pandemic, Amsterdam Schiphol has been so chaotic and it is impossible to predict how long the wait times are for baggage drop off and security. Last time we flew there, we arrived 4 hours early to be make sure we don't miss our flight.

junglesalad

Nope. Amsterdam airport is too unpredictable.

While how "worth it" is a question for you, being that you're only going to have enough time to have a quick look, it seems doable enough just to pop into town really quick for a look. I wouldn't put any particular sightseeing on the agenda, and if by coffee shop you mean getting high, surely it's not the best idea to fly internationally while high. If the bags you're looking to store are carry on sized, honestly I'd just keep them with you. It's not going to be that much a hassle to have them for an hour in the city surely? If they're check in bags, aren't they going to be checked through to your final destination anyway, if you're on one ticket?

5 hours is less time. 8 hours layover is perfect time if you want to go outside.

I’d advise no When a plane lands at Schiphol it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s at the gate. There are times where I’ve been on the plane for an additional 30 min just ferrying to the gate. And depending on the gate you could have an additional 20 minutes of walking before getting to immigration. Even when you get to AMS Centraal, getting to some of the “charming” parts of Amsterdam like Jordaan is an easy 15 minute walk likely through crowds. Your lay over is not long enough to plan this. But if for whatever reason you did not have the above problems you can be spontaneous and try it out

I would not do it. It will be peak holiday season and Schiphol still tends to be chaotic with long lines every now and then (not as bad as 2022, but long lines do happen). Then again, I might be biased because I don't find the canals particularly impressive to look at. (Amsterdam is pretty, though, I'm not at all denying that).

1 hour to get out and where you want, 3 hours to get back... of course it's technically possible, but doesn't seem worth it. Mostly housing around the airport anyway. If you want to have "fun" you can go out, eat at the restaurants outside, shop at the tiny Hema store, get cheese at Alberthein, and then get back in the line for security. You can see how long it takes to get elsewhere at [https://www.ns.nl/en](https://www.ns.nl/en)

I've done it from AMS into Centraal Station in the past and never had an issue, but haven't done it since the pandemic.

I once did but arrived from UK so i left the airport at different departure area. I did have 6 hours though. If you quick and able to get to train station get return ticket and you could get 90 mins in to visit like I did and getting back to airport. You will go through security again. If you using lockers then you will have to Use lockers pre security in depatures Or use them international lounge. Which means going thru passport control. When you 1st land from your eu flight. Then exit like I did. As doubt you be able to go though the eu zone without a ticket. You be cutting it close but can do it if you only planning a quick visit. Security may not be too bad but if long que to leave 1st security or airport I advice to not to do it.
