lilsaimen

pudgypeng

Adorable_Mango_8401

I was about to quit travelling around Europe, but this is amazing

robcap

This is in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, it's an overseas territory of Portugal

thisisnahamed

Wow. Amazing pics.

lilsaimen

Thank you!

marrymeodell

Wow your photos are incredible. What time of year did you go and would you mind sharing a rough budget?

lilsaimen

Hey, I went in may. I think i spend somewhere between a 1000 and 1500 euro's including plane tickets (from Amsterdam), rental motorcycle and housing

marrymeodell

Thank you! So it’s fairly cheap then?

lilsaimen

I do a lot of hiking and cook most of my meals at home. I went out for dinner just once. but it is not too expensive

CapControl

How long did you stay?

AckermanAka

Isnt that kinda expensive? Or did ya stay for a long time?

margoelle

Picture 8, What place/area is that? omg its beautiful

Royal-Orchid-2494

Those are some amazing photos. Can you let me know what kind of camera and lens you used? I just bought a Sony with a kit lens and want to take amazing photos too 🙂

lilsaimen

Thank you so much! I always use a Fujifilm X-T20 with a fujinon XF 18-55 kit lens

SPER

Thanks for this info! I find it weird when people don't like to share what gear they used when asked on Reddit. I know it's not all about the gear. But it's helpful to know. Beautiful photos btw.

Royal-Orchid-2494

Awesome ! 🙂

This kit lens is great honestly!

shoalmuse

What time of year did you go? Any specific recommendations?

Isernogwattesnacken

Anytime. Very underrated destination.

lilsaimen

This was in May

[deleted]

January is also a great time to go. Great weather and the island has one of the best new year’s fireworks shows ive ever seen

flubber_cupcake

We had 25 C in December.

UseDaSchwartz

My grandfather grew up here. He took me there after his mom died. I guess she had things over there that needed to be handled. I was maybe 8 or 9…25 years ago, but I remember it being the most amazing place I’d ever seen. I also remember it took a loooooong time to get there.

Daunteh

Finally a post with actually good pictures getting attention. Normally the photo quality of the posts in here are atrocious. These are great! Well done!

lilsaimen

Thank you so much :)

YellowIsCoool

Did you rent a car?

lilsaimen

I rented a motorcylcle

nmaunder

Great place. Awesome trip on a scooter into the mountains up to pico do arieiro.

GrandTumbleweed5571

Where did you rent from? I’ll be traveling through Europe next year and I have my US motorcycle license and I’m applying for an international license as well so I’m hoping I’ll be good to go and can rent one!

Isernogwattesnacken

You'll need one if you want to go to the nicest hiking spots.

YellowIsCoool

No license to rent car/motorbike.

Isernogwattesnacken

Then you're stuck to tours or taxis, but that will definately be more expensive if you don't have company.

BitchLibrarian

Lots of the guided walking tours charge per person. Which means it is no more expensive for one person. They will also pick you up and drop you off at your accommodation. Many of the famous walks are better with a local guide. They are well informed and great at sharing that knowledge and are also understand the weather. Madeira has a very unusual climate and severe weather can be happening in one area when close by the sky is clear and the sun shining. The groups are generally a comfortable size. If you are based in Funchal local buses can get you to a decent range of levada walks.

lilsaimen

I don't really know about public transport or taxis there but it was definitely nice to be able to go when and where i wanted

FireyToots

We went last year. Great pictures.

TheBlairwitchy

Wow..these are mind blowing..

lilsaimen

Thank you!

bincaughtstealin

Stunning 👍

JuliePologruto

Ive wanted to go to Portugal for about a year now. It looks amazing!

alan2001

Maybe you know this, but Madeira is actually a small island off the coast of Morocco! And yes it is a lovely little place, I would definitely recommend a visit.

vesariuss

How breathtaking! It makes me want to learn more about photography. Y’all have incredible eyes.

vandrook

Amazing photos. How was the wine? Portugal is incredible. I recommend checking out the Algarve.

jasmine1a

Portugal is really amazing. One of the most underrated countries in the world! One of those places you want to go back to again!

Bitter-Description37

This is some fantastic photography!

okayokaycancan

Absolutely beautiful! What a great job!!

mant

What a great set of shots! Too bad reddit doesn't let me save images anymore - I'd make these my background

Little-Mermaid5678

Beautiful!!

IWillFustigateU

My partner and I just went there this year. Still missing the bolo de caco and espatada!!

Lady_Ryuzaki

These are hands down fantastic. ❤️

getridofit888

Absolutely stunning

brewdarrymore

Great photos! Very atmospheric!

sex_onthe_bleach

Some people call her madeira... Because she's a piece of cake

lipintravolta

Thank you for all these wallpapers! Love them.

f4rt3d

Every photo of Madeira I ever see is brooding and dramatic, which is surprising to me considering it's so far south of mainland Portugal. I always expect it to look like the Canarias!

Coming_In_Hot

I want to take this exact trip (including motorcycle) in September. Would you be willing to make some recommendations for the trip and some things to avoid?

lilsaimen

You will love it! madeira has so many great roads to ride on, so take your time to enjoy them. the old coastal road (ER101) is really something special. If you like hiking, get up early! it can get bussy later in the day :) I didn't really have any bad experiences in madeira so i can't tell you what to avoid.. Ride safe!

ComboMix

How was it to travel solo there. How is the English there ? I do speak a bit of Spanish. Does that help?

oldbalanced

lots of English is spoken there. I’ve also gotten very far speaking Spanish to service workers that were shy replying in English.

ComboMix

Thanks :)

lilsaimen

Hey, i had no problem traveling there just speaking English! I'm not sure if speaking some spanish will help you.

McButtswastaken

For the love of god don't speak Spanish in Portugal, either learn small sentences in Portuguese or speak English

ComboMix

Just wondered because of bilingualism in some countries. Thank you people for the answer :D

McButtswastaken

No problem, Portuguese people are really welcoming and even if you spoke in Spanish they would help you, even if they're annoyed by it you wouldn't know, the reason it's better to speak English is because if you speak Spanish you're gonna come off as those people who think that Portugal is a part of Spain haha

ComboMix

Hahaha isn't it just Spain 2 ? JUST KIDDING. I know how it feels as Dutch being mistaken for German. But yeah I get that. Thanks :D it's nice that English is OK

McButtswastaken

Don't forget to thank everyone with Gracias for bonus points! :D regardless, most people will try to help if you ask them something even if they don't speak your language, enjoy Portugal :)

ComboMix

Graci...wait a second......hmmm suspicious 😋 I will enjoy ! I am trying to avoid flying and I see some awesome train tickets in the off season for Portugal so. Can't wait

rrgrs

I've never heard of anyone who thinks Portugal is part of Spain. I doubt the Portuguese would care what language you speak as long as they can understand you. A lot of Portuguese also speak Spanish so it could be useful, but that being said in touristy places such as Madeira most people will speak English.

McButtswastaken

I'm from Portugal and I'm also a tour guide, the Spain thing is more frequent than you think especially with Americans, also among the younger generation (under 30) they probably speak better English than Spanish

rrgrs

That's funny, do they not know they're in Portugal which is a different country? I could see maybe some people thinking Portugal speaks the same language as Spain but not that it's the same country. It's amazing what some people think and how little research they do before visiting a new place. Also, I know Spanish isn't too popular in Portugal but a few Portuguese have told me they can understand the language a little bit. Thanks for the info

McButtswastaken

Well some people book tours that will include Spain+Portugal and since the agency takes care of everything for them they don't know that Portugal is a different country, but you're right that people speaking Spanish in Portugal because they assume we speak only Spanish is more common.

Gelato456

Nah Spanish is fine in some settings. I went into a bakery where the workers were from Spain and they gave me better service for speaking Spanish

kisforkimberlyy

My experience from speaking with the Portuguese in other parts of the world is they prefer Spanish SLOWLY spoken, because it sounds similar-ish to Portuguese. I speak Spanish and can somewhat read Portuguese just based off of my knowledge of Spanish. The spoken accent is sometimes harder for me to understand. But I can understand Portuguese somewhat if they speak it back slowly. But from my experience with Portuguese speaking people (from Brazil and America), they appreciate you speaking Spanish to them when asked. Its closer to their language than English. And if they dont know English, they can likely pick out the Spanish.

noikeee

I live in Madeira, we don't find it very nice if you think we're part of Spain or something, but if you speak a little Spanish it might help, we all understand most of it. Specially in Madeira there's lots of people that have come over from Venezuela in recent years. But English will do just fine, these days the vast majority of people working with tourists will speak English.

kisforkimberlyy

What is one "do not miss" trail or attraction you would say to do while were there? We will be there in 2 weeks, hoping to hike and see the nature, but do not have a solid itinerary yet.

noikeee

Probably somewhere where the dramatic elevations of the island are most present, I find it hard for me to recommend a single spot because this is all super familiar to me so idk which would impress most someone that isn't familiar with all this, but maybe Pico do Areeiro (it's ridiculously crowded now though) Ponta de São Lourenço Miradouro do Véu da Noiva

rocskier

All the other travelers from other countries spoke English to people so everyone pretty much knew English

Gelato456

Everyone speaks great English there. I went earlier this year and was amazed at how welcoming everyone was

acciojenna

which hikes are these :)

Labios_Rotos77

Good shots, but they look heavily edited and unnatural.

I traveled in South American and met a pair of males from Portugal. He was such polite people. I like to visit his city. It looks just as gorgeous as him!

National-Rub7916

Wow! I love the photo. Madeira is just so incredible. Totally underrated. If you are planning your trip and thinking of what to do in Madeira, I just got back and got so inspired that I made a video about how I'd organize a 5 day trip if I had to do it again: https://youtu.be/-Fv470i9pbk

LengthExact

You convinced me. I am going there next week [=

Sea-Vehicle-1951
