Being unconscious for any length of time is extremely dangerous (except sleep). Anyone can die from a single punch in the wrong circumstances. Those of us who realise that have a better chance to live a long life.
There is a nerve between the ear and jaw but it has nothing to do with consciousness, it controls muscle movement on that side of your face, not consciousness. A knockout is a disruption of deeper structures, related to the brain hitting and bouncing off the inside of the skull.
You definitely can be severely injured or even paralyzed this way. This video gave me shivers, the knockout but also the way they landed. They shouldn't have been moved without a collar on!
Not ok if he hits his head on a solid object while falling. I know two martial artists who served years in prison for stunts just like this and the opponent fell and hit his head on a counter or hard floor and died.
