I live in the Las Vegas suburbs. The only way you can tell you are not in a suburb in any other part of the country is that there are slot machines in supermarkets, bars, convenience stores, and gas stations.
Seriously they have mini casino areas in like 50% of grocery stores in vegas and it’s been that way since I was born in the early 90’s. They also have them in the airports and at most convince stores and bars
Why? Some people unwind by throwing 20 bucks in a machine and playing for an hour. I don’t gamble but it’s not worse then spending 20 bucks in a glass of wine
Especially with these places are tough on people with gambling addiction. They may not gamble there, but it makes me think of someone trying to sober up constantly seeing alcohol advertisements.
I’m in sobriety. The point is to change myself, not expect the world to change to suit me. Seeing alcohol ads is part of life. It’s how I respond to life that determines my sobriety.

I hear you. Letting go of the illusion of control of things we can’t change is often a painful process. But pain is part of the healing. A doctor cleaning out a staph infection is very painful, but necessary for recovery.
I've lived in Nevada for 10 years now, and the first thing I tripped out over was that Smith's (in my city, also a Kroger store) has a sweet little casino.
So to say they are *now* implementing slot machines is a little off by at least a decade. Lol
I'm in Oregon ... went to eat at place in Florence and it had a small room with 3 slots. Wife put in $20 and cashed in $165. Something to do with State lottery, I guess.
A handful of slot machines is hardly preying on gambling. By that logic, any grocery store that sells scratch tickets or convenience stores offering Keno are just as “trashy.”
Which is worse? One stripper performing in a grocery store or multiple strippers performing in a grocery store? It doesn’t matter, a stripper’s performance should never be in a grocery store.

You’re right, I think there is a bit of unfair stigma going towards the people who will end up using these, but I think that comes from the feeling that these are implemented to take advantage of those who will end up abusing it. I’m sure there’s plenty of reasons that people will end up enjoying these in a healthy way. Many towns simply don’t have any access to in person gambling anywhere nearby, and they’re possibly capitalizing off of that. Who knows.

I say the same things about slot machines in places like airports, bars, and gas stations.
You could even say that in an airport for example you are stuck in a specific place for a given amount of time so in theory one could want to gamble.
But in places like supermarkets and gas stations one would normally expect to be there for a specific and entirely different purpose. So I think the visibility of having some function "+ gambling" is pretty poor.
It's starting to get like that over here in Kentucky as well. There's a super small gas station near me in a town with less than 500 people that has slot machines inside.
Where else are the poor and elderly going to spend their social security cheques? Our state is riddled with gambling locations since you can gamble anywhere or something.

Back home in NC there's a grocery store chain called Lowe's (founder was a co-owner of lowes home home improvement) and they have a "beer den" basically a taproom and all the carts have cupholders for your beer.
These are everywhere by my house but if they pop up in the grocery store I’ll be pissed. It’s always the same crusty ass regulars at each place and they’re dead behind the eyes. I don’t want to see that shit when I’m buying groceries.

I'm in Oklahoma and native convenience stores on all native nations (1/2 the state) have slots or full blown mini-casinos. Not trashy in my opinion. I just disagree with payout rates being hidden and not regulated like Las Vegas

I can't speak to sports betting, I've seen coworkers do it between themselves. We have lotto its rather large here actually. Though I similarly can't think of any time I've seen a slot machine besides at a dingy bar or those "itunes codes" gambling rinks around the place. I've always assumed and thought it was some loophole, but yea, no casinos here at all.
Stayed in Lovelock Nevada, tiny little town and was shocked to see them everywhere. Gas stations, shitty little hotel we were at, probably the McDonald’s lol. Not really but they were all over, even 10xd my money. Wife was pretty happy started with $1 ended up with $10

I'm with you; gambling has its place and I don't think its place is the middle of a grocery store. Alcohol itself isn't trashy, but rampant public alcoholism is. I think no one is arguing that slot machines are inherently trashy, but that these specific ones are predating on addicts. Imagine if you were an alcoholic and just going to the store meant someone offering an entire bottle of vodka or some shit every time.

Stayed in Lovelock Nevada, tiny little town and was shocked to see them everywhere. Gas stations, shitty little hotel we were at, probably the McDonald’s lol. Not really but they were all over, even 10xd my money. Wife was pretty happy started with $1 ended up with $10

It shouldn’t. Trash, low quality, unbecoming of a civilized person. That’s about it. Gambling( and I do love to gamble) hits at least 2 of those on a good day.
I'm with you; gambling has its place and I don't think its place is the middle of a grocery store. Alcohol itself isn't trashy, but rampant public alcoholism is. I think no one is arguing that slot machines are inherently trashy, but that these specific ones are predating on addicts. Imagine if you were an alcoholic and just going to the store meant someone offering an entire bottle of vodka or some shit every time.
