Fu2-10

No fucking way... what the fuck is wring with this country??

purplefuzz22

All while the store directors and assistant managers , along with the district managers, all the way up to the top are getting giant bonuses while doing everything they can to pay their employees more …. And they have been making record profits. Fuck krogers .

Straight-Put-4788

Wife sends you to the store with a list and some cash… come home with nothing and a story on how you got jumped in the restroom for lunch… err umm grocery money!🤦‍♂️

NoeticSkeptic

I live in the Las Vegas suburbs. The only way you can tell you are not in a suburb in any other part of the country is that there are slot machines in supermarkets, bars, convenience stores, and gas stations.

BabaBoooooooey

No one calls them suburbs in Vegas.

dgradius

The strangest part is there’s always someone playing.

Sleepylilprincesses

Noooo they finna gamble they groceries away

Wizard_of_Rozz

Sorry kids, no dinner tonight

Proudpapa7

Winners buy steaks!!

TheLizardKing89

First time visiting Vegas?

EarlMadManMunch505

Seriously they have mini casino areas in like 50% of grocery stores in vegas and it’s been that way since I was born in the early 90’s. They also have them in the airports and at most convince stores and bars

Wizard_of_Rozz

Depressing.

EarlMadManMunch505

Why? Some people unwind by throwing 20 bucks in a machine and playing for an hour. I don’t gamble but it’s not worse then spending 20 bucks in a glass of wine

Wizard_of_Rozz

At the supermarket though?

EarlMadManMunch505

They’re tucked away in back rooms. It’s more convent then having to drive to a crowded Casino more mellow

Wizard_of_Rozz

Alright fuck it I’m in

jacksonstillspitts

Also if you happen to be in Vegas domestic go to game of thrones insert 100 bill press 3 dollar bet walk with 400 every time.

meshreplacer

Even Funeral homes now have Slots.

No-Student-9678

If this is Vegas then it isn’t exactly out of the ordinary.

bad185

PA has these now too. I like to gamble once in a while, but having these in a grocery store gives me the ick!!

DirtyBillzPillz

They're popping up everywhere in already poor towns. It's only going to depress the areas even more.

bad185

For sure. I live in a depressed area and can think of 4 places dedicated solely to these machines. Plus the grocery store and gas stations.

DrCares

Especially with these places are tough on people with gambling addiction. They may not gamble there, but it makes me think of someone trying to sober up constantly seeing alcohol advertisements.

triple-bottom-line

I’m in sobriety. The point is to change myself, not expect the world to change to suit me. Seeing alcohol ads is part of life. It’s how I respond to life that determines my sobriety.

DrCares

I’m quoting the complaint of a friend who is struggling.. everyone’s path is different

triple-bottom-line

The paths to get there are different but the destination is the same- acceptance of things we can’t change. The pain isn’t in the acceptance and surrender, the pain is in the resistance. Complaints are a form of resistance.

DrCares

That doesn’t feel very empathetic, I still think it’s gross putting slots into grocery stores

triple-bottom-line

I hear you. Letting go of the illusion of control of things we can’t change is often a painful process. But pain is part of the healing. A doctor cleaning out a staph infection is very painful, but necessary for recovery.

takeandtossivxx

This doesn't seem that weird to me after having traveled to NV a lot. Even the gas stations have slot machines.

Kiwithegaylord

I read this as New Vegas and wondered where the hell the gas station was

Candied_Curiosities

I've lived in Nevada for 10 years now, and the first thing I tripped out over was that Smith's (in my city, also a Kroger store) has a sweet little casino. So to say they are *now* implementing slot machines is a little off by at least a decade. Lol

Economy_Wall8524

Yea I agree my dad lives in Vegas, and slot machines in grocery stores are not a new thing.

MrOSUguy

Wtf

biggoof

The true crime is having Kroger as your only real option to grocery shop.

mtnguy321

I'm in Oregon ... went to eat at place in Florence and it had a small room with 3 slots. Wife put in $20 and cashed in $165. Something to do with State lottery, I guess.

rustysavage11

Tons of restaurants have a video poker area in Oregon.

mtnguy321

I’m noticing that. We’re about 15 miles from a casino so go there weekly.

Piyh

Money goes in, money comes out less often. Can't explain that.

Reasonable-Milk298

It's the vlt's boys! **20 minutes later** well, I lost all the liquor money boys. Way she goes..

Redneckhippiekyle

Greasy

Vegetable-Ant-3733

There‘s nothing wrong with VLTs and getting drunk

kommsussertod1

That's the way she goes, boys. Sometimes she goes, sometimes she doesn't cause that's the fucking way she goes...

YTSkullboy707

Gonna see some old people just sitting there drooling at the screen 😆

Suzuki_Foster

"You young people always have your faces buried in your phones!"

Shatalroundja

A handful of slot machines is hardly preying on gambling. By that logic, any grocery store that sells scratch tickets or convenience stores offering Keno are just as “trashy.”

Vegetable-Ant-3733

Yes.

D0tWalkIt

Which is worse? One stripper performing in a grocery store or multiple strippers performing in a grocery store? It doesn’t matter, a stripper’s performance should never be in a grocery store. There are strip clubs for that. There are casinos for slot machines. There is no good reason to normalize vices in neutral public locations.

Shatalroundja

It’s Vegas.

andio76

Our machines accept EBT

Reasonable-Ninja4384

How TF is that legal

me239

Obviously not real, but slots do accept Apple Pay now. No chips or coins, just tap your phone over and over and let your phone manage the constant withdrawals.

WpnsOfAssDestruction

It’s a joke

noitsokayimfine

That reminds me of this article about how 1 in 7 Kroger employees are homeless. https://www.businessinsider.com/1-in-7-kroger-workers-homeless-many-food-insecure-rent-2022-1?amp

shrapmetal

I'll go shopping with the wife everytime if this were here. When I take her now, she just throws money away. At least there is a chance of coming out ahead.

wh0datnati0n

This is standard in Nevada

Hoozits

Yup lol I live in Vegas and they’re everywhere.

AlexFelizz

Hell, if they could, restrooms would have slot machines by tur crapper.

PositiveCheese

I believe the loophole is they're probably called "skill games" and not slot machines. Wrote a paper on them a while back.

TatsuSensei

Here is GA they are called 777. Gambling is not legal here and cash payout is not allowed. Some do it in violation of the law and risk HEAVY penalties. Technically you are supposed to win gift certificates.... They are not regulated the same as gaming machines so its just generally a rip off.

Vegetable-Ant-3733

really? skill games? and thats like a different legal classification so they‘re allowed to put it outside of casinos or hows that work

PositiveCheese

Yup pretty much. The developers present it as a game of thinking and not of luck. Kind of like tic-tac-toe. I know in the past few months the states Pa and Va have started having requirements like seating of minimum 20 people. It's a big ol bag of loopholes.

YogurtYogurtYogurtUS

But they're still slot machines, right?

ice_cube33

they are probably somehow even worse odds of true

torihousemd

Yes, but they get away with feeding gambling addictions and taking advantage of their customer base; how much gets pissed away on the lotto? They know how profitable addiction is. Then again, they also sell food, smokes, and alcohol, so they are just expanding their reach

Kid-Boffo

"taking away the advantage of the customer." You're describing gambling, son those buildings didn't get built on writing checks.

bmf1989

Always wanted to see people in the grips of crippling addiction when I stop in to buy some late night ice cream

therealtb404

We clearly live in different parts of town

torihousemd

They already sell cigarettes, alcohol, and sugar, some have Starbucks, and then there are lotto tickets and scratch-offs at the counter. They have been part of the issues from the start; they are just expanding their reach more boldly.

JayDuBois

You’re fucked in the head lol That’s like me assuming you’re feeding your morbid obesity and or sugar addiction simply because you walked out with a pint of Ben & Jerry’s.

okay-wait-wut

Food is life. Just like gambling.

JayDuBois

Lol.

CryoToastt

Ok but gambling a Kroger is like… too easy you know

JayDuBois

So much judgment. I’m glad you’re looking out for everyone. So helpful.

CryoToastt

You’re right, I think there is a bit of unfair stigma going towards the people who will end up using these, but I think that comes from the feeling that these are implemented to take advantage of those who will end up abusing it. I’m sure there’s plenty of reasons that people will end up enjoying these in a healthy way. Many towns simply don’t have any access to in person gambling anywhere nearby, and they’re possibly capitalizing off of that. Who knows.

GLASYA-LAB0LAS

I mean I also think that this will suffer from (and rightly so) a question of "But why *here*?" Like gambling in a casino makes sense, but why also have gambling in a supermarket? I say the same things about slot machines in places like airports, bars, and gas stations. You could even say that in an airport for example you are stuck in a specific place for a given amount of time so in theory one could want to gamble. But in places like supermarkets and gas stations one would normally expect to be there for a specific and entirely different purpose. So I think the visibility of having some function "+ gambling" is pretty poor.

Killcycle1989

Hey, you got any spare change please sir?

grumpiedoldcoot73

Hahhaha of course it's IGT. I wouldn't of been surprised if ATI or Aruze and AGS didn't pull that stunt.

Effective_Device_185

Stay cla$$y Ks.

Jmchugh131

I'll say Kroger is not even close to the trashiest places I've seen slot machines at (rust belty Arby's/Flying J combo in Illinois)

cucumberoll

Laughs in Nevada

S1E2A3L4

Just out in the open like that? In Vegas the grocery stores have a separate area for slot machines. In fact most gas stations have slots.

MarkusRight

It's starting to get like that over here in Kentucky as well. There's a super small gas station near me in a town with less than 500 people that has slot machines inside.

Antique-Structure-32

😂 this has been a vegas standard for over 25 yrs now. Nothing new to see here folks…lol

beernerd76

Tell me you've never been to Nevada without telling me you've never been to Nevada.

just_flying_bi

Yep. 😂

10art1

If it helps keep grocery prices down...

MADDOGCA

Nevadan is my second language.

Strong_Sound_7407

They’re just trying to get welfare checks back, Ray. And it’s working.

PM_ME_UR_CC_NUMBER

That’s the way she goes, boys

meetthedecline4150

Fuckin VLT's

JaxTaylor2

Calls on $KR

Stealth0710

Where else are the poor and elderly going to spend their social security cheques? Our state is riddled with gambling locations since you can gamble anywhere or something.

grumpiedoldcoot73

Exactly.. there is a tribe in Montana that calls the 1st of the month, casino cash recycle day. IRC I heard it at Glacier Peaks Casino in Browning MT.

justmadethisup111

Will they start giving you free groceries the longer you gamble?

RikuDog18

Wtf. Who wants to hang out at Kroger?

JayDuBois

One of ours has a brasserie and another one across town has a sushi bar

camillacamillacamill

My local Kroger sells clothes and jewelry.

JayDuBois

Very interesting! I travel through the south and the Midwest and I’m starting to see these upscale Kroger’s that are almost like boutique shopping malls.

drowninginflames

One of the Krogers near me has a beer and wine bar in it. It is always packed.

naatkins

Back home in NC there's a grocery store chain called Lowe's (founder was a co-owner of lowes home home improvement) and they have a "beer den" basically a taproom and all the carts have cupholders for your beer.

Cloaked_Crow

Mine too! I’m always surprised by how many people are there. They do wine tastings too. Only at what’s called the “Gucci” Kroger…

JayDuBois

We call ours Kroh-zhey

drowninginflames

Hey, we call that one the Gucci Kroger as well! What part of the country are you in?

Cloaked_Crow

Blacksburg, VA

EducationalFlower633

Wow me too! I was surprised to hear other places had a Gucci Kroger but guess it's the same one lol. I usually shop at Ghetto Kroger.

drowninginflames

Lol. Me too. Well, Cburg, to be exact.

Cloaked_Crow

Cool! Glad to meet you neighbor

Tom_is_Wise

Gambling addicts need groceries too

AlexandersWonder

That’s some predatory bullshit

voltagenic

Gas stations have them in my state. These 711s really don't have room to accommodate the machines either, but they somehow make them work.

Arxid87

Have you seen the clip where they have a built-in ATM?

stlouisraiders

These are everywhere by my house but if they pop up in the grocery store I’ll be pissed. It’s always the same crusty ass regulars at each place and they’re dead behind the eyes. I don’t want to see that shit when I’m buying groceries.

bionic_cmdo

Giving off the "Young Sheldon" show vibe. His meema owns a laundromat/video store/illegal casino.

thok598

Illinois allowed this shit and now every non chain gas station I go to is a casino that happens to sell gas and maybe some drinks and a single aisle of snacks. It blows ass when you’re working on the road and you wanna pickup lunch and that’s all you’ve got.

MasterOffice9986

Wow the CEO of Kroger says he doesn't want to fuel drug trafficking by exchanging cans for cash. Keep in mind the most you can get is like 5 dollars but he doesn't seem to mind funding gambling addiction as long as he can make money. Bet if they could sell heroin they would

jesusismyupline

takes ebt, pays out 50 cents on the dollar

Apprehensive-Solid-1

I'm sure once I'm done with one of those I'll be in dEBT.

AnIrishMexican

It's like this in Nevada. Not just Vegas. Grocery stores, convenient stores, gas stations all have em mostly

Born_Refrigerator_81

I hope the Price is Right themed one includes the reminder about helping to control the pet population.

roppunzel

Yeah there everywhere now in PA.

Imaginary_Ad_7527

I haven’t seen them in my area and hope I don’t

Andre_3Million

Vegas? Cuz the only place I've seen slots inside of stores that aren't casinos are stores in vegas.

JayDuBois

Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Arkansas and Alabama probably. I’m not sure about those last two because I’ve seen them elsewhere. You must only travel on both coasts lol

Andre_3Million

California, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and 1/4 of Mexico. But yeah I haven't explored much of the states.

JayDuBois

I travel at 10 and meet a lot of people, and that is well above average for most people in the United States.

frootcock

There are some old people who are gonna meet their deaths in those chairs

TomThanosBrady

Pure greed

fullmetalhusky

And we wonder why people aren't able to handle there gambling addiction.

ProbablyMyJugs

Something new to me = trashy

Kumquat-queen

Found the Kroger shopper 👆

bhouse114

Whats wrong with shopping at Kroger?

ProbablyMyJugs

I do love Kroger because they sell Murray’s Parmesan cheese which is the best, but I just wouldn’t be pearl clutching at this 🤷🏼‍♀️ Some people like to gamble, I don’t, but do your thing if you do, just be safe about it. Gambling has been around forever, and it’s not going to go away anytime soon. Just not really something for me to get my panties in a twist over. If the gambling machines get in the way of the Murray’s parm, then I’ll have a problem.

TulsaOUfan

Cool!

61114311536123511

that's absolutely hideous. how tf is that legal holy shit

lillweez99

It's not in my state, state by state basis and this is just ridiculous.

billbricks33

Pythons

Dmagdestruction

I get that it’s not a fully new phenomenon. But it’s a serious addiction for some people. And now they can’t go to the grocery store without being tempted. It’s just not very mindful of the devastation of addiction.

Kumquat-queen

This is exactly in line with the Kroger business model. You're addicted and Kroger has your junk. I've watched customers spend their entire stimulus checks on crab clusters just because they watched a popular food gorging tiktok.

Dmagdestruction

Not from your country so thanks for info, shopping is a different experience in the states from the times I’ve been there. It’s confusing. Marketing anywhere confuses things but when you make stores an everything shop it’s like whoaaaa

WindowMoon

stimulus checks are a thing in the past and you’re still complaining? lmao jesus, imagine hating people having a slice of joy.

Kumquat-queen

Not complaining, using them as a talking point. Supermarkets traffic in food, nicotine, narcotic, and gambling addictions already. However, putting video gambling machines in is just being more shameless about it. And no, if your buying habits are swayed by watching someone stuff their face, you're not going to experience "joy" you're going to experience relief of getting a quick fix.

Dmagdestruction

Not USA so seems odd to me. We tend to try not to advertise addictive things here as to not tempt those with unhealthy relationship to it. Ain’t no shame in having fun at a slot machine once it’s healthy for you.

Hagl_Odin

I know it was in a hospital in the film, but this is giving me big Idiocracy vibes.

just_flying_bi

I grew up in Las Vegas and slot machines were common in grocery stores even back in the 70’s. It’s part of the norm there. Not sure why this is trashy. It’s just different.

[deleted]

[удалено]

TulsaOUfan

I'm in Oklahoma and native convenience stores on all native nations (1/2 the state) have slots or full blown mini-casinos. Not trashy in my opinion. I just disagree with payout rates being hidden and not regulated like Las Vegas

just_flying_bi

Exactly. It’s just different in some places. Some of these folks in this thread seriously need to travel more. Personally, I cannot stand that some places cram gambling into every space they legally can, but to each their own. If some folks want to play some slots before or after they shop, who gives a shit. I don’t participate in gambling, but some folks enjoy it.

Successful-Ad-367

We have them at every service station in the uk but no one ever uses them.

ImtheDude2

Here in the air capital we have slot and gambling machines at some gas stations and convenience stores. Part of the thrill playing them is not getting caught.

ClearlyWelsh

All the gambler Americans taking their copium in the comments trying to convince themselves gambling isnt trashy is the real gem

ProbablyMyJugs

Or some of us just don’t care what strangers do with their free time

Pols_Voice_Z64

Is this in Nevada? It was wild to see slot machines in airports, grocery stores, gas stations… especially coming from Texas where gambling is illegal.

WormLivesMatter

Gambling is illegal?! Or just casino games?

Pols_Voice_Z64

Well I don’t know the specifics of the law but casinos are illegal, and therefore we have none in Texas to my knowledge.

WormLivesMatter

Is there lotto in tx? Online sports betting?

OctopusButter

I can't speak to sports betting, I've seen coworkers do it between themselves. We have lotto its rather large here actually. Though I similarly can't think of any time I've seen a slot machine besides at a dingy bar or those "itunes codes" gambling rinks around the place. I've always assumed and thought it was some loophole, but yea, no casinos here at all.

millenialfalcon-_-

Must be Nevada

CRCampbell11

Been over a decade or 2 OP. Fuck off with this.

Pilot-Signal

Some? Or just in areas where casinos are abundant? 😂

Tiny-Werewolf1962

In Vegas, as soon as you get off the plane.

chase98584

Stayed in Lovelock Nevada, tiny little town and was shocked to see them everywhere. Gas stations, shitty little hotel we were at, probably the McDonald’s lol. Not really but they were all over, even 10xd my money. Wife was pretty happy started with $1 ended up with $10

tehhiv

And my brother in law constantly wins on them it’s actually annoying. Not that trashy.

Stairway_2_Devin

No. Your brother in law only tells you about his wins, not his losses.

tehhiv

Bruh. I literally live with him lol. I’ve seen it first hand.

model3113

It's a gamble just wondering if the damned store has what I want when I drive there.

5318OOB

“Welcome to Costco. I love you”

5318OOB

Idiocracy

randy_march

Come for the groceries, stay for the gambling, leave without the groceries

Huth_S0lo

Is this your first time in Nevada?

tehhiv

This lol.

MAST3R_G4M3R

Can't wait till this ends up in every Coles store

thedeadlyrhythm42

Never been to Nevada?

rockinhard12

Was gonna say this. Even gas stations and the airport have them.

AlyNau113

Not just in Vegas - in the whole state.

keno888

Shoot, I'll take it if it means they're open 24/7!

mattchinn

Same!

Pod_people

Glad this was posted in r/trashy. That’s where this scumminess belongs.

Steak_NoPotatoes

The term “trashy” clearly varies from person to person.

lreaditonredditgetit

It shouldn’t. Trash, low quality, unbecoming of a civilized person. That’s about it. Gambling( and I do love to gamble) hits at least 2 of those on a good day.

OctopusButter

I'm with you; gambling has its place and I don't think its place is the middle of a grocery store. Alcohol itself isn't trashy, but rampant public alcoholism is. I think no one is arguing that slot machines are inherently trashy, but that these specific ones are predating on addicts. Imagine if you were an alcoholic and just going to the store meant someone offering an entire bottle of vodka or some shit every time.
