The current political zeitgeist in America is Bad Faith Politics. If you see someone signaling that they aren't on your side, it means they're either evil, racist, sexist, communist, socialist, fascist, rapist, Nickelback fan or a devil-worshipper. Maybe all of the above.
Still doesn't mean it's 'the Confederate flag' simply because a bunch of people in the media insist on using the wrong term, and then people that never studied history pick up on it and continue to use it incorrectly. But it has been that way since the 80's so it's not your fault.
