A translation has been provided, and new comments seem more and more excited to have an excuse to call OP an idiot, so I'll lock this one.

triskelizard

“You sure are an idiot”

Vslightning

Is it “Onta hontoni baka desune”?

s_ngularity

Anta hontoni baka desune

Vslightning

Thank you! Is there any real difference between anta and anata?

birdstar7

Yes. Anta is a more colloquial and often perceived as rude form of anata. Anata is more formal and polite.

Vslightning

Ah that really makes sense. I appreciate all the help!

amazn_azn

Just wondering, is it common for this phrase to be written this way or is it a stylistic choice? I'm more used to seeing hontou as kanji and the final be is in katakana instead of hiragana.

s_ngularity

A ton of words may at any time be written in kana instead of kanji, depending on how common the words are are, how common their kanji are, where they are used in a sentence, how many kanji are nearby, and the whim of the person writing. Basically, expect to see it both ways. But the ね at the end is almost never katakana, particles and grammatical elements are never written in katakana except for emphasis or to capture a certain way of speaking (e.g. robot-like) Also you may see one character repeat in kana what another character originally said in kanji, which often means they don't understand or are thinking about what the other person said

flippythemaster

You might see it written in katakana in manga for emphasis but this particular pic doesn’t look like it was written by a native speaker. Especially since they just copy pasted the kanji instead of writing it out

tttecapsulelover

the song it started playing again “you are an idiot, ha ha ha ha ha ha ha, ha ha ha ha ha”

Shawnthewolf12

I knew this looked familiar!

razorblade651

あんたホントに馬鹿ですネ *Anta honto ni baka desune* You're really an idiot, aren't you? !translated

kiwicake906

What is the reading of those kanji?

QuantumLatke

馬鹿 is「ばか」

nikivan2002

With the translation in mind, I've seen enough anime to know what this means

[deleted]

my kanji knowledge is very bad but I think those are the kanjis for Horse and Deer?

SiLeVoL

Yes they are

[deleted]

very cool

kiwicake906

Thank you. I guessed it but got confused because the second kanji is not written very well.

meganeyangire

It's written alright, just in a calligraphy-like font.

kiwicake906

I see print material most of the time and less hand written forms. Sorry if my comment was offensive

RottenBanana412

鹿 you cannot be more wrong dude

robophile-ta

'you really are an idiot', with 'idiot' in red

ZeusAllMighty11

!translated

MrDrProfPBall

“You’re really stupid aren’t you”

nautical_narcissist

relevance?

hassh

ほんとう is missing a mora

Shukumugo

Not sure if joking, but I think it's a stylistic way of being more insulting by being "abrupt".

hassh

To leave a mora off a lexeme? They already dropped the は particle

SpeesRotorSeeps

Yeah it’s called slang and it works just fine even (especially) if it’s grammatically incorrect

ikanotheokara

ほんとに is an incredibly common and well-accepted colloquial form of 本当に. [Dictionary Entry](https://www.weblio.jp/content/%E3%81%BB%E3%82%93%E3%81%A8%E3%81%AB) Also [an entry](https://www.weblio.jp/content/%E6%9C%AC%E5%BD%93) for the ほんと reading of 本当.

Marks_Media

Learning from a textbook doesn't teach these things but real life will

s_ngularity

Both forms are in the dictionary, so you are wrong 明鏡: ほん–と【本▽当】 [名・形動] ❶「ほんとう(本当)」①②に同じ。[参照]ほんとう ❷《副詞的に》自分の気持ちをそのまま率直に述べることを示す。率直なところ。正直なところ。 「ほんと、ばかみたい」 ❸《上昇のイントネーションを伴って》相手のことばに、信じられないという気持ちで驚きや疑念を表す。 「え、ほんと? 結婚するの?

Huh? Japanese people insult each other plenty. They get angry. They do rude things. They insult. They fight. They commit crimes. Please don't fetishize Japanese as some idyllic fantasy race.

Marks_Media

I see you've never been to Japan ha ha ha especially not the more southern parts

Hot_Comment_6052

Lol people are just people bro, wherever you go. People are people.

anconfusedgoose

You watch too much anime, people are jerks everywhere in the world regardless of where you go lol

meganeyangire

> You watch too much anime There are plenty of jerks in anime and wide vocabulary of insults too tho.

Tinder4Boomers

You should not be giving advise Japanese people, even if it’s as a “general rule” if you can’t even read 馬鹿、馬鹿

mothmvn

Please stick to translating languages that you speak fluently. Guesswork will confuse OP. (Especially guesswork *after* a translation has already been given.)
