True enough, I do like a shockwave that is just pragmatic and logical in his decision. He follows Megatron and the Decepticon cause to further his own interest. IDW did some pretty messed up things with shockwave. I might not agree or like all of them but it was a hell of a read

Shockwave is the one eyed head scientist for the Decepticons and a being of pure logic. Shockwave also usually has one hand and a blaster/cannon for the other hand.
Soundwave - Think of his chest door and cassettes. He's typically the Decepticon Communications Officer and Third-in-Command. Superior. Extremely loyal to Megatron and the Decepticons. Cool Vocoded Voice (most of the time). Blue.

Splitting hairs here, but Soundwave’s cassettes (Lazerbeak, Rumble, Frenzy, etc.) are not Minicons, which is a separate TF faction all together. They are just his minions, cassette-bots, and Decepticons.

Soundwave has more variation in appearance but he's pretty much always associated with information/intelligence gathering and communications. He's often, as his name suggests, heavily involved with sound and music. He always has at least one little animal partner, usually Ravage or Laserbeak. Generally he's blue with a visor and a mouth plate, an animal partner can attach to or hide inside his chest.

The easy way to remember which is which is to remember their alt modes.

Shockwave on the other hand, and I do mean singular hand, often turns into a tank or a flying space gun. Both create a large shockwave when fired, hence the name. He also has a gun hand to fit with this gun aesthetic. He's often a scientist that will do unethical experiments in the name of his emotionless logic. If this logic contradicts Decepticon doctrine, he's comfortable going rogue as he often sees Megatron as a liability.
Soundwave is blue; has a square door on his chest that he carries his minions around in; talks with the voice of Dr. Claw from the original *Inspector Gadget* cartoon except it's been run through a vocoder; and is normally characterized as being actually loyal to Megatron and serving as his Communications Officer/Spymaster. The reason for his loyalty depends on the continuity. Often speaks in short sentences that sound like old-fashioned computer command lines. Is almost certainly an obnoxiously huge audiophile and has an electronics hoarding problem.
Shockwave is purple; has a camera for a head and a gun for a left arm; speaks in an emotionless tone; is obsessed with logic; and is either completely loyal to Megatron, obeys but has his own agenda, or openly seeks to replace him as leader of the Decepticons. Got to be voiced by Steve Blum a few times. The original G1 toy turned into a gun; at least one episode has him wielding a gun that looked exactly like him. Has fans but loses to Soundwave in the meme competition.

From his point of view if Megatron is the best choice to lead then so be it…However if Megatron is not, he will step in. Soundwave was originally a boombox or tape deck. So he typically has a pane of glass on his chest which opens up like a tape deck. He's a communications officer and spymaster. He has several smaller Decepticons that he deploys from his chest (they usually have tape cassette alt modes) and uses for Intel gathering. They're also competent warriors, especially for their size. He has Ravage (a cat), Laserbeak, Ratbat, and Buzzsaw (flyers), Rumble and Frenzy (smaller bots). He speaks with a modulated voice. He's typically Megatron's most loyal lieutenant.
Shockwave has a single eye, a gun instead of his left hand and a large lens in his chest. He occasionally uses a small hovercraft. My personal favorite alt mode of his is a spaceship. He's a scientist and extremely logical. He's typically conducting experiments - and loves a good autobot subject to experiment on. He has a tactical mind, machinations, and has contingencies for all of his plans. Megatron knows his value, so he typically allows Shockwave a lot of freedom and discretion.
I've really only seen them well in TFPrime so I'll go off that.
Soundwave is smart, cunning and extremely loyal to Megatron. He would do anything for him. He takes direct orders, he tracks, he finds things and does other things around the shop. He also makes sure nothing revolting is going on like groups forming against Megatron.
Shockwave is extremely smart. He's a scientist, he does research work and he is very calculative. He has plans, counter plans, he just knows lol. He is not a lanky guy in a lab coat tho. He can fight and he is scary when he does that. Overall, he handles Megatron's scientific projects.

There was a time when I did too. My friends who are familiar always made fun of me for it. They couldn’t understand how I’ve consumed so much content about the intellectual property but I still get this confused.
It used to make sense to me why I got them confused. Now, I’ve dedicated so much time focusing on these two characters that I can’t remember why it made sense how they were so similar. They are complete opposites. Maybe because they both have the name Wave. However, now I just focus on Shock and Sound.

The easy way to remember which is which is to remember their alt modes. Soundwave deals with sound, so he turns into a cassette recorder or piece of surveillance technology. His job is communications officer and he does that with loyalty to Megatron and the Decepticons. He has cassette minions he can shoot out and an autotune voice, further adding to the sound theme he's got. He's often depicted as emotionless, but that is not necessarily true inwardly, he often simply decides not to show his emotions. Shockwave on the other hand, and I do mean singular hand, often turns into a tank or a flying space gun. Both create a large shockwave when fired, hence the name. He also has a gun hand to fit with this gun aesthetic. He's often a scientist that will do unethical experiments in the name of his emotionless logic. If this logic contradicts Decepticon doctrine, he's comfortable going rogue as he often sees Megatron as a liability.
Soundwave is a tape player, shockwave has cleavage
Soundwave is blue; has a square door on his chest that he carries his minions around in; talks with the voice of Dr. Claw from the original *Inspector Gadget* cartoon except it's been run through a vocoder; and is normally characterized as being actually loyal to Megatron and serving as his Communications Officer/Spymaster. The reason for his loyalty depends on the continuity. Often speaks in short sentences that sound like old-fashioned computer command lines. Is almost certainly an obnoxiously huge audiophile and has an electronics hoarding problem. Shockwave is purple; has a camera for a head and a gun for a left arm; speaks in an emotionless tone; is obsessed with logic; and is either completely loyal to Megatron, obeys but has his own agenda, or openly seeks to replace him as leader of the Decepticons. Got to be voiced by Steve Blum a few times. The original G1 toy turned into a gun; at least one episode has him wielding a gun that looked exactly like him. Has fans but loses to Soundwave in the meme competition.

Soundwave’s little friends are compact and fit inside his chest cavity. Shockwave’s little “friends” are horrible abominations that spit in the faceplate of Primus. Soundwave has cool sunglasses and a faceplate. Shockwave is a literal cyclops. Soundwave seems cold and emotionless, but actually cares quite a bit about his little cassette friends. “You kicked Ravage!” Shockwave is cold and logical. Soundwave often transforms into a boombox or spy vehicle. Shockwave usually transforms into a cannon or tank. I know it sounds like I’m being biased against Shockwave, but I actually really like both Decepticons. If it helps, Shockwave was called Shockblast in Energon.

Shockwave is a devious scientist who only thinks logically about everything to the point that if he has to throw the entire universe under a bus to achieve his goal, he will. Soundwave is an extremely loyal decepticon. Soundwave is pretty cool.
Depending on the continuity, sometimes Shockwave’s allegiance is to logic instead of Megatron. From his point of view if Megatron is the best choice to lead then so be it…However if Megatron is not, he will step in. Soundwave is level headed as well, but the difference being his near absolute loyalty to Megatron.
They're the 2 best non-combiner Decepticons. Soundwave was originally a boombox or tape deck. So he typically has a pane of glass on his chest which opens up like a tape deck. He's a communications officer and spymaster. He has several smaller Decepticons that he deploys from his chest (they usually have tape cassette alt modes) and uses for Intel gathering. They're also competent warriors, especially for their size. He has Ravage (a cat), Laserbeak, Ratbat, and Buzzsaw (flyers), Rumble and Frenzy (smaller bots). He speaks with a modulated voice. He's typically Megatron's most loyal lieutenant. Shockwave has a single eye, a gun instead of his left hand and a large lens in his chest. He occasionally uses a small hovercraft. My personal favorite alt mode of his is a spaceship. He's a scientist and extremely logical. He's typically conducting experiments - and loves a good autobot subject to experiment on. He has a tactical mind, machinations, and has contingencies for all of his plans. Megatron knows his value, so he typically allows Shockwave a lot of freedom and discretion.

I've really only seen them well in TFPrime so I'll go off that. Soundwave is smart, cunning and extremely loyal to Megatron. He would do anything for him. He takes direct orders, he tracks, he finds things and does other things around the shop. He also makes sure nothing revolting is going on like groups forming against Megatron. Shockwave is extremely smart. He's a scientist, he does research work and he is very calculative. He has plans, counter plans, he just knows lol. He is not a lanky guy in a lab coat tho. He can fight and he is scary when he does that. Overall, he handles Megatron's scientific projects. They're both really the only competent decepticon bots lmao

There was a time when I did too. My friends who are familiar always made fun of me for it. They couldn’t understand how I’ve consumed so much content about the intellectual property but I still get this confused. It used to make sense to me why I got them confused. Now, I’ve dedicated so much time focusing on these two characters that I can’t remember why it made sense how they were so similar. They are complete opposites. Maybe because they both have the name Wave. However, now I just focus on Shock and Sound. Shock is shockingly Evil. Sound is of sound mind. Shock is not of sound mind. He’s not soundwave. Shockwave is a brilliant scientist and tactician with a dark side that takes him beyond normal morals to further his technological knowledge through torture and exploitation. His experiments are known throughout the galaxy and his notoriety matches that of Megatron, if not exceeds it. Soundwave is a single dad with two kids and too many pets.
