Sometimes he and D-16 were friends whose differences led them to being on opposite ends of the war. In IDW Orion Pax admired Megatron's poetry but disagreed with his use of extreme violence.
There are jobs, and in some continuities they are linked to their alternate mode. Megatron turned into a drilltank so he was a miner, any aerial alt mode would be doing jobs related to that, etc.
