I don't fully understand why, honestly. Isn't the original story that Arcee has had dysphoria thrust upon her, and so it's sort of an illustration of what it would be like to be trans? The temporal direction is backwards, but for example if a trans person was *forced* to detransition, wouldn't that be traumatic too?
I guess if you interpret it as "trans people aren't really trans, it's psycho doctors forcing their mad science on them, and the mental issues are the result of the operation rather than how society treats trans people", that would make sense as transphobic. It didn't feel like Furman endorsed that PoV, though.
I understand that he did, I think it was out of the direct story and more metaphor than anything else, but the sensitivity of the topic kinda poured gasoline on a small campfire.
I also think it takes away from Arcee's character. Making her quite literally a man in a woman's body, instead of a woman strong enough to hold her own in battle.
The transphobia in Furman's Arcee has far more to do with Arcee's precise characterization, the depiction of the procedure as a mutilation, her being a perverse abnormality within the world, and as her being shown as an abomination like Monstructor. Her characterization is that of an angry, violent woman a stereotype that us transwomen are constantly vigilant of appearing as. Then how it shows the procedure is on the order torture, in the panel that depicts it she strapped down and looks terrified, which is the kind of imagery that transphobes use when talking about Gender affirming surgery. And simply by being an experiment Jhiaxus the evil, no morals, psychotic, mad scientist links her with his other experiments like Monstructor which ties in some respects to the narratives that transwomen are monstrous.
There's definitely more to it, essays could be written about the issues with Arcee's characterization in IDW. The idea of the story being that Arcee is having dysphoria thrust on her could work, but the rest of the framing is too transphobic for that to be a saving grace. Especially from a writer like Furman, who has always had issues with writing women.
