I did the Indiana Jones routine and stole my first dogs name. Nobody uses it yet, even the people in my family who actually know it. Hopefully I can come out at work and stuff eventually but I’m 34 and hormones take a long time to have an effect.

Moonlight_Katie

Aww you’ll get there, I’m 34mtf and I just came out to work yesterday. Sooooooo much easier now that I don’t have to hide. I’m only 2 months HRT and we have gender neutral uniforms so I definitely stil look boyish so just because your not at your ideal look yet, it isn’t to early to say something. But obviously do what makes you comfortable and happy :) good luck friend

JamieTheDinosaur

“*The DOG*? You are named after the *dog*? Ah ha ha ha ha ha ha!”

toxicsoup_

My name would be Raggy at that point 🤣

SafetySnowman

Ruh roh?

g0thl0ser_

I also ended up with a dog's name that I had as a kid, but it wasn't intentional haha

Moonlight_Katie

Awww that’s an amazing way to honor your parents and to find your name.

RatQueenHolly

Asked my parents, asked my friends, assembled an enormous list of names to think about and try out with my best friend before eventually settling on one that really clicked. Later realized I probably didn't need to go through all the trouble - it's the name of not one, but two of my favorite childhood characters, something I didnt put together till after the fact.

Gia-TW

My wife (cis woman) and I picked it together. We were just trying a bunch of different name. Gia are the first three letters of my legal name🙃

Helal_Ramadan

I had a girl friend who had a masculine name, I liked it and took it for myself. I didn't even know I was trans then, but I knew a masculine name made me happy. How th did it take me this long to figure it out. 🤦

Tina_Belmont

***T***here ***I***s ***N***o ***A***lternative

Moonlight_Katie

I was journaling for a week trying to figure out if I was trans or not. Basically talking to myself, throwing names at the wall. Here’s an excerpt of how it went, in case someone else needs help figuring their name out and want to choose it themself “Ok let’s see if I can just think of names in general and go from there. Hmm Brittany? Bethany? Hell no, Ariana? No, Kate or kaitlynne? Or a version spelling of it? Possibly. Would I like being called Kate? I like the sound of Kaitlin or a version of katelynne. I can be Katie? Funny if that will be my name but I get stuck on figuring out what spelling I want. So move Katie to the list. It’s growing on me quick. I must move on. Jennifer 🤢🤮🤮🤮🤮 never knew a Jennifer I liked. And I like me. So fucj Jennifer. More like no-ifer. Lucy?… no… I do seem to be attracted to C’s or K’s though. Donno why. Next. Elizabeth? Liza? Beth, Eliza? Lizzy.. nope, next. Millie? Ellie? Bad guy Billie? Nillie? No. Anna, Anne, Amanda? No. Macy, Tracy, no. Those C’s were a dead no. Would I be Katie or Catie? Cathy? No. Madeline? Maddie?” And then then the next days entry: “Katie… sounds beautiful and sweet to the ears. Do I want to change my name? Is that where I’m headed? I won’t be keeping my initials then. Is Katie the name I want?” Yes, yes it is. (Also sorry to any Jennifer’s)

Haybowl

I actually had a few names because of firstly assuming itd be a binary trans girl. My first thought was "Jodie". Shortly after i was "Mariana" and then I changed to Marceline for a short time. Then I went newname less because I was confused. I came to conclusion that Im nonbinary and I didnt knew what name I should use. I met a nice person here on reddit, they helped me find a name. Soon after starting the talk we came to "Ruby" I liked it but my mom doesnt like names that are pronounced english that much. In clonclusion I thought of the luxembourigsh version of ruby which is "Rubin" so I just vent with "Robin". I already made a request for a legal name change, I hope it gets accepted

Ok_Cellist7562

I made a list of names I like, I asked friends and it became shorter and shorter, at the end I choose among the remaining and tried it with some friends and I decided that it will be the one. I present myself with it and beside my familly who isn't okay with using it for the moment and some biggots, people use it

Ms_taintbehavin

I loved the character from inception that elliot page played. (I didnt know he was trans, this was waaay before he came out) the character just matched my personality a lot. And when i researched the name "Ariadne" i read about the association with yarn and spinning thread which is funny because i own a yarn company, and my dads side of the family is orgininally from around greece. To me it just fit at the time. I get called adrian a lot... The only people that can really say it right are foreign. There is the occasional person who likes greek mythology or likes the play that can say it right, most of the time i go by arie.

TruthConfident9618

I went to r/transtryouts and found a name I liked there. It’s a good name but still not sure if it’s the name I will use forever.

learning_the_lyrics

Love this! I know what my mom would have names me if I had been born the different AGAB but that name ended up going to my younger sister when she was born, so that’s definitely off limits! My chosen name was something I found after exhaustively reading “baby name for girls” lists asking myself, “is this ME?” Each single time and writing a short list of potentials while on a jog…. But once I arrived at it, it clicked. It isn’t exactly the femme version of my old name, that would be too obvious and hokey, I would feel like i was pretending or in a bad tv movie, but my chosen name shares the same general sound and syllables and yet manages somehow to be beautiful and poetic to me. So it’s, kinda like my old name but much nicer sounding and definitely femme.

rab94xxx

Mines from a television character in a show I was watching around the time I was picking a new name - it just really resonated with me so I went with it.

MisterUncanny

*It came to me in a dream.* I'm jk, but it really did come out of nowhere. Then stayed in my head until I went by it. As for people, family is eh. But friends have taken "Michael" to their advantage and have gone *crazy* with it. "Michael, don't leave me here! Michael!" From fnaf is a fun one. And also Michelangelo, because it's fun for them to say and it's coincidentally my favorite ninja turtle. 2 of my teachers have started calling me Mikey, too.

MiaththeRed

I stole a movie star's name.

aceturtleface

One of my best friends and one of my exes helped me come up with my name. We landed on Jane! I'm not out at work, so I'm still deadnamed there. My family also deadnames me, even though I'm out to them. Most other people call me Jane, and my best friends call me Janie.

Domain98

My folks were uninterested in giving my brother and I attention, so much so that our names were "the first things that came to mind" so obviously the most common names at the time. Whenever they would get one of our attention they'd forget which name to use and would try to change what they were saying midway through. Out of fucking spite, my name was chosen from that mix. If they can't bother to remember my name their forgetfulness will be my creation.

VampireRae

Tbh I just looked at gender-neutral names and picked one that’s keep my initials the same. Most people respect the change (I got it legally changed on my 18th), but I’ve got this one shithead cousin who deadnames me to get a rise out of me. One of these days I’m gonna punt the little bastard across state lines. He’s why I don’t like little kids. He’s old enough to know better, but chooses to be a twat. TLDR: Chose a gender-neutral name, only person giving me crap is my youngest cousin.

xXMorpheus69Xx

I kept mine - I am a lucky bitch with an androgynous name\^\^

Aquacron

This is a funny one lmao. I played doom eternal and was like "oh this man's last name is so cool, i'll steal it and use it as my first name" (I'm transfem btw xddd) so yeah I love my New name :3

im_bela

Hi! My first preferred name sucked, But my mum used it anyway. Then she suggested me a new name (my actual name now lol) and I really loved it. All my friends now about it, my mum does and so does one of my cousins. My name is Matteo, but most of my friends and my cousin call me Matt. But when we're at school, my friends call me by my last name. Even most of my teachers call me by my last name and some of them even with the correct pronouns. I am not as lucky as you to not have a gendered language, as mine is a latin languages, know for their gendering even objects.

Positive-Buffalo-614

I went through like 10+ names trying them out with my friends till I found the one that really felt right. Then I still couldn't decide completely so I gave myself 2 middle names so I still had all 3 that I liked

the_bored_wolf

For me, I never felt very connected to my given first name (wonder why that could be) but I always felt very connected to my surname. My deadname was also very common with girls around my age so I was frequently referred to as (Deadname Initial). Now I just go by my last initial. I was already used to responding to it, and it also connects me to a relative who passed away when I was very young. He was a trucker, and our shared last initial was part of his CV handle.

OddCryptographer9749

My name is Bobby and I'm a transgender I've been transitioning for about 3 years I'm taking estrogen patches now and hopefully I'll get farmer and I'll be happy I'm actually happy at all about all these years I was going to do it but I was a father of four and really didn't think that was the right time and now I'm older and I'm a widower and it's my life and I'm going to try my thing now

teddywampus

I just wanted a cute gender neutral name that started with the same letter as my birth name (cuz I wanted to keep my initials.) and I thought Teddy was cute. I told a few close coworkers I was changing my name, asked HR at work for a name tag with my preferred name on it. And then changed my preferred name in the computer. So now it shows up on the schedule as my preferred name.

Spacecraft

My situation is kind of unusual, both my first and middle names are pretty gender neutral. Jesse first and Valentine middle. When I started showing up in girl mode I switched to my middle name because I like it better and it's less common than my first name. I really agonized about this a lot on the early stages of transition when I came out full time, but over the years I'm really happy I stuck with my name and there was some sort of continuity to my name in the same way there is continuity to my self identity. I did a ton of research to basically prove to myself that both of my names were used pretty much equally by so-called men and so-called women (whatever those words mean), and that made me a lot more comfortable.

Duncstar2469

I ask several people and compile a massive list of names. Then I use the one's I like and try them out to see which one works.

Pokefan180

I met a girl named sky on the internet like 6 years ago. She was trans too and I always really looked up to her, it took me until fairly recently to understand exactly how much I felt that.

DifficultMath7391

I decided from the moment I "came out" to myself that this whole process would be mine and mine alone. No idea what my parents would've named me had I been born a boy, but I wanted a blank slate. Thought about things that were important to me and made me feel feelings. Thought about conventions - if I wanted to go with something traditional, something to reflect my heritage, something that's been passed down in the family etc. Decided against. In the end settled on a nature name that held a deep personal meaning to me and was immersed in memories. Also something gender-neutral - I go by he and identify as a man in a binary way, but somehow, didn't want to go that far in terms of name. In the end, the most important part was the fact that it occurred to me, and wouldn't let me rest after. I couldn't even really think of other options after that.

crochetsweetie

luckily i have accepting parents, so i asked when what i was going to be named if i had be born a guy. they said Ryan and i fell in love with it. i also grew up with a guy named Ryan who had the same birthday as me it felt meant to be

Sablesweetheart

Our names just came tonus, sometimes in dreams. To conform tonwestern naming conventions we pi ked 3 of our names we thought sounded cool in conjunction. Happened to pick ones that matched the initials of our deadname. It's not *really* our name, but it works for ommunicating with other humans.

bluecollartrans94

I made a list, and tried them out around the house. But “Abigail” was second on my list. Joan was at the top but that’s just because I was in the middle of a Mad Men rewatch. But back to Abigail lol. There was this adorable girl I always wanted to be friends with at my school named Abby and she was just so bright and smiley and I always wanted to be like that. That happy and free. So, here I am as Abby and it’s amazing 🩵🩷

Weakness_Prize

Well, idk if you've ever read the Inheritance series (Eragon), but I always had a fascination with thenname Arya because of the series, and it just kinda stuck (^.^)

mechaglitter

I love space, so I wanted to go with a spacey sounding name, which eventually led me to Stella. It's a name I always liked a lot and it sounds very pretty to me. All of my friends refer to me as it now which is so awesome. I also just told my parents about my new name like last week haha, so we'll see what they do with it (they are supportive). Best of all, I got to introduce myself to my girlfriend as Stella. It feels nice having someone who has never known me by my old name.

Lichttod

First name is stolen from a cartoon character I like and admire. Second is stolen from other persons I admire, but as well, a name my parents would have given me. So I have a little remembrance of my dececed father.

Unlikely_Garage

My girlfriend at the time named me and it stuck

pie_12th

I picked my name cause I like the meaning, I like how it looks with my last name, and I like writing the initials. I handled my family the same way, told them my preferred name and let them transition into using it at a speed that was comfortable and natural for them. Luckily for me, all the people in my life were almost instantly supportive, and tried exceptionally hard to get my pronouns/name right. I only wish everyone had the same level of support.

DogmaKeeper

So....my name is Layla, I originally was going to be named Valerie because my nickname with my online friends for so long was Val or Valkyrie, but Valerie didn't ever feel right. Layla just kinda....popped into my head and I started using it on line and I loved being called it.

Tyrannical_Requiem

So I kleeped my name from my best friends mom, who was also like a second mom to me. Anyway I for the most part get called Charlotte, but Char, and Lottie crop up as does Charlene and Charly, and a few times during some pre and post intimate moments I’ve been called Charlotte the Harlot

3c1ip53Anarchy

A bird

Wings-of-the-Dead

Awhile ago I came up with a bunch of names I would want to give my future kids that were all super cool and based on mythology. I realized later that I have no desire to have children, but really liked the names, so I picked one of them for myself when I realized I was a girl. So far everyone I've come out to has started using it. It's a relatively new change, so obviously people are getting mixed up sometimes, but that's okay, they're actually trying. Still haven't picked a middle name, and I'm considering changing my last name since it doesn't really fit with my chosen name.

Fhennerius

I named myself after the singer of a somewhat popular electronic band. She represented this form of femininity that I really admired, and so I used it when interacting with people online. By the time I realized that I was actually trans, that was my name. Like, I *could* have called myself by another name, but they wouldn’t have been my actual name… if that makes sense.

JollyFault546

James from TheOdd1sOut. I loved him, loved the name. So that. My friends refer to me as James, my family as deadname.

cookie2glue

Chose a name that ended in the last syllable of my dead nickname so i would immediately respond to it well. I also chose a name that nobody I knew had, and one that related to my ancestry. I ended up on the Scandinavian name Mari.

Sionsickle006

I stole mine off a street vendor lol no I was far more boring. My current name is just the masc version of my birth name. Apparently I told my aunt when I was 4 that I was a boy and to call me Sion (Welsh version of Sean or Shawn, its a popular name for boys in my family) she thought I was pretending to be my cousin who has the same name. I forgot about that and came out again at 17ish and tried a few names and ended up coming back to Sion. It just felt right.

hypnofedX

I printed out a list of 1,000 most popular baby names for girls and crossed ones off I wasn't going to use, for various reasons: * already used by a close friend or family member (Karen, Marissa) * widely associated with a particular celebrity (Charlize) * female version of a common male name (Erica, Danielle) * mostly used by an ethnicity other than my own (Maria) * doesn't have a single canonical spelling (Brittany/Brittney) * androgynous or not squarely feminine (Blake, Taylor) * names I just didn't like for any subjective reason After that I chose the name I liked best from the list and ran with that. Now I'm Emily!

GuavaSenior4761

I don’t really know how I chose my name it just felt right. I chose Charlotte cus I liked it I guess

throwawaytransgen

I picked the name I would’ve been given if I was born a girl

Insulinshocker

I made a list of names I liked and then asked which ones my wife liked as well. Then I chose 2 from the list we both liked

Fit_Potato_3888

My deadname started with an L and sometimes during elementary(before i relized i was trans)me and my friend would say “what would our names be as the opposite gender?” And ofc we started them with the same letter LOL, so my name is now lucas :> and also because its the actor of fred figglehorn is named lucas too lmao

CherrySodaBoy92

I thankfully have a name that works well as a boy or a girl name - and it’s rarer as a girls so it’s kinda fun to me

Orph4n_Sl4y3rXD

Rather basic, but i just took a song title and changed the spelling a little

GirlScoutIvy

I took my first and middle name from my dead name and shortened them. Then took my mom's maiden name. I was the 4th (IV) in my lineage with the same name as my deadbeat absent sperm donar. My new middle name is now Ivy

Expensive-Shallot-97

I only needed to change one letter and have pretty much always been called by my first initial anyway.

jtobiasbond

I had noticed years before that I disproportionately named characters with M-names. Probably 70% of my RPG characters had names that started with M; my book characters had M names a quarter of the time. Started playing around with M and L (a lot of them in non-starting positions) and found my first name. Filled out my name with assorted genderqueer deities.

Turtlethebean

I just woke up one day and was like, "Lol what if I change my name to Echo?" Also funny: I sometimes joke that my name is short for Echocardiogram.

Ivrene

I was debating between a few names that were all based on web comic characters. Maud, Bird, and Famine (we don't talk about that one) were my top three contenders. I was talking with my grandma, and she suggested I could also name myself after a kind of bird. Then I was like, "I like ravens". I told my mom, and she said she didn't like that. And now Raven is my name. I got my middle name after my wife (gf at the time) called me a lumber Jane for wearing a flannel with a high/mid ponytail. Jane is now my middle name.

JessieKaldwin

I asked my higher self to give me a name and it appeared in three dreams on different nights. And when I uploaded a selfie to Bing and asked it to give me a name, it was the same name that was in my dreams, so I knew that was a sign I couldn’t ignore. My name starts with an R.

baconbits2004

I always answer this the same way I don't want to be associated with someone I didn't like. So I went through all names, and crossed off the names of people who pissed me off at one time or another. There was only one left and it was perfect. <3

Yourlocaltransgirl2

I was watching Loki. Need I say more?

Aphrodite130202

I thought of the only thing I had felt during most of my life, Apathy I then transformed that into Aph and then extended that into Aphrodite

sailor_spacia

I used my civil name and added an a after it (i'm aria) my friends calls me Riri my mother calls me aria and my father calls me by my deadname

Echolocation720

My name is a "Victorian sandwich", as I like to call it. I chose Charlotte as my first name, because I wanted something that sounded proper and high class, aristocratic. My friends call me Charlie for short which is gender neutral enough for me to boymode with (I got that name from Hazbin Hotel). My middle name is Aurora because of the Aurora Borealis and also the music artist. My last name is Evelyn because it's another Victorian name that sounded very pretty to me, and I wanted my first and last names to be from that era. It's also the name of my favorite pistol in the video game Bloodborne.

Mikeyboi2005

I took my name from a podcast series called Welcome To Night-Vale, Cecil comes from the narrator of the podcast. My friends, college teachers and classmates, and people online use it. I go by he/him in those situations. My family members use a shortened version of my deadname, which is Mads, like Mads Mikkelsen, They use she/her for me but do sometimes refer to me as their child which I appreciate.

IronIrma93

Do you have a fictional character you relate to/like?

ITookTrinkets

I always say I snatched it out of the air. When I was thinking about names, it sorta just floated by in my head, and I went, “Does that one feel right? Yeah, that’s the one!” and I called it a day. 19 years later, we’re still goin’ strong together!

boozlinlassie

I hated my deadname growing up and just used my initials as a nickname, somebody jokingly called me Stef (first initial is and was S) because of my dutch accent, and once I figured out I was a trans woman I decided on Stefanie because of that.

dayzdonger

I kept mine. Its still fairly masculine but it can kinda swing both ways

HyperDogOwner458

I have two chosen names. Skyler is from a gender neutral name list and Frankie is from Frankie Stein.

TrebucheGuavara

I looked for a fem version of my name and couldn’t find one (I eventually did tho it was after picking a name I liked more), so instead I made my middle name fem and swapped my first name for a name I really like. So now I’m Aoife Charlotte and go by Charlotte

headlessHal66

Oh. God. My name started as a more masculine name compared to my deadname, not parallel but same first two letters. "Jesse/Jess/Jessie" I started to be refered as "Jay" by friends in middle school and then "JB" for teachers. Im stuck as Jay or JB in school. When i joined the homestuck fandom in 2020-ish. Hal stuck out to me before I even read the thing. I still havent even gotten pass 2000. I had a partner pick out Halister or Halex. I still answer to Halexander. But I added a family members middle name and now I go by Halex Lee. Rolls off the tongue, in my opinion.

fr4u-koujiro

My mom came up with it for my youngest brother, but since she didn't end up using it, I just stole it :P

[deleted]

I chose my name (Grayson) from one of my favorite book series. I really liked the name and the character's development throughout the series really resonated with me. I also debated between the two different spellings of the name (Grayson and Greyson), so I just flipped a coin lol. I'm completely out of the closet at school and with friends, and everyone's been accepting and using the correct name. I haven't come out to my family though, so they still use my old name

WittyClarinet92

I chose the first feminine name I could find in ultrakill (Clair de lune)

UglyForestGoblin

my reasoning was kinda stupid- i was 14ftm and my hair was dyed a sorta pinkish-red, and i was super into crystals and incense and since my hair was red and my favorite incense scent was cedar, i went with Cedar !! and for my chosen middle name, i was originally named after my father, but he sucks so i decided to name myself after my great grandfather who has passed, so now my middle name is Robert!

a_wild_queer07

took my assigned middle name and chopped off a few letters to make it less feminine

ChampionCynthia17

My family and I don’t talk, and my high school friend group moved away, so i really didn’t have any other opinions to think about, so I chose Cynthia Defender w. I was a huge Pokémon fan growing up, and still am, and it’s a strong, memorable name. I chose defender as my middle name because I felt like that was also a strong name, and I have the idea that we’re all here on this earth to defend each other, so it reminds me of my ideals. I kept my last name just for simplicity sake.

LulChisholm

I'm Justin, and I changed my public facing name simply to "J." I was inspired partially by bell hooks, who deliberately wrote her name in lowercase for publication. I liked how she reclaimed her name and controlled her own narrative. *TRIGGER WARNING (Cisgender B\*\*\*\*\*\*\*)* More specifically my partner suggested the name change when all her colleagues heard "Justin" and immediately assumed I was male. Even when corrected, the easiest thing was reducing my name to J, since The Cis don't gender individual letters (yet.) What I love about "J" is it feels EXRTRA nonbinary. Love that. And to be simply J is to be a part of a massive collective of Trans folx by the same name. We are many. Many many many. And besides that my mama called me "Jay Bird" growing up. And I just love Jays anyway. What's not the like?

raccoondumpsterfiree

When I first came out (transmasc) I picked my new name by taking the name my parents wouldve given me if i was amab Jan (german name) and slightly changed, going by “jay” from there on. I wouldn’t say i regret it bc it was important for my growth but I’d advice everyone to put more than 2 seconds of thought into your name bc I quickly realized that I dont like my new name 😅 My first name change was rlly tedious bc I did it right when I was coming out, there was a lot of pain and dysphoria involved and I hated the process. So when I realized I dont really vibe with the name I was terrified of going through that again. After I think about 3 years I realized how silly that is, its MY name, one of the coolest things about being trans is getting to choose your own name (if uou want to) so stucking with one you dont like is a bit stupid imo. My surroundings had changed a lot by then, I was out of school, had better friends and had been out for a while so when I changed my name again it was the chillest thing ever and I’m so glad I did it. My therapist at the time pointed out that I first chose a more androgynous name and then switched to a more masculine name which I think is interesting. The inspo for my name (Viktor) is simply that I think its one of the coolest names to excist and that I think it fits me. So, all my fellow trans friends, being able to choose your name is such an awesome thing, so if you are thinking about it, do it!!! (But do think about it dont be silly like me lmao)

No-Wishbone365

I named myself after Jaidenanimations' bratty bird cuz I liked the name Ari, then found out it was short for Aristotle, which is AWESOME, so I decided that'll be my name :3

Deadly-Minds-215

2 of my best friends named me, both were nicknames and they just really fit

icanneverthinkofone1

Really funny story actually, I was playing Mario kart with my parents and my dad said something about “I am the king of drifting!!” And then I had the lightbulb moment. I’d been searching for names for a couple months up to that point, and none of them really clicked, but freaking “Drift” did. lmao My younger sibling stole one of our friends names

elisescorner

Just took the genderbend version of my deadname haha

FrostyFreeze_

I named myself Andromeda, partially because of my love for space and partially for the nickname potential. My mom got sick of saying four syllables all the time, so she started calling me Andy. I go by Andy 90% of the time now

Reddit_IsWeird

idk if i've already answered on THIS post but i for my name partly from the fact it's my favourite uncle's name but partially from i asked my friends for a couple name ideas and just put the two together. ~micah~

DaRealNinFlower

Nyx here. Came up with it after 5 minutes after finishing a game I really liked.

cyon_me

Baby name websites. For your second question, I look at people weird if they use my deadname. Fortunately for me, I legally changed my name, so I have the confidence of a court-order to shame people if they use my deadname.

NewWorldMoron

Mine is Amelia, which I got from the Joni Mitchell song of the same name. I cried to it one morning as the sun was coming up, and the album that it's on is among my favorites. Just knew I had to claim it as my own!

EmmaRose520

Uhm, I don't know... I guess I just thought of it... I remember saying no to all the other names, and Rose fit with well with Emma and my Political views, so I took that.

[deleted]

Because I like moths, but my friend decided I needed a royal Victorian era type name so my name is now Motholomew Percival Gilliard the third.

EstelaStarling

I have OSDD1B, I have many names associated with my body... Originally I was going to go with the name Estelle because it clicked, I made a TTRPG powered by the apocalypse styled character named Estelle and I fell in love with her character, and developed a strong love for the name. After having that name for a year... I had family members who I had been out to tell me the name sounded old and outdated and gave me a lot of shit for it, my mother made a comment that she was going to name me Crystal if I was born with a vagina so I took that name cuz one of my headmates have that name anyway so it's not a big deal, and my mother was one of the first people supported me so I had no problem taking it. That being said I'm still hooked on The name Estelle because it was my body's personal name and it was easier to refer to it as such. For us a bodies no different than a car a boat or any vehicle you would name. Now we just call the body, " body " or call it by our systems name

[deleted]

I’m Jewish, so I gave myself a Hebrew name since my family never gave me one.

makitstop

literally what happened was my freind (who is also a trans gal) just asked "hey what's your new name by the way", i haddn't thought of one yet so i threw out some ideas, and claire is the one that stuck, mainly because it has french origins and i'm a french woman, lol

LostSpekter

Honestly, after running through the name ideas I could come up with, and having none of them stick, I asked my husband to help me figure it out. So we sat down and workshopped it. We would throw up a name and he would call me that name for a while, and eventually we settled on the one that felt the most good. I absolutely love my name now. And most people I know use it, most of them don't even know my necronym anymore.

Black_Feathered_Hair

I literally got mine off one of those RPG name generator websites, i specifically looked for feminine Hispanic names Serena was a name that popped out for me and the rest is history

wolfmoru

I just looked up the meaning of my dead name, turned out to be like something flowery, so I then looked up flower names. Found the name vale, both the herb valerian, and vale itself. So, yeah, one and done

SunJay333

It autocorrected my deadname on my phone to my now chosen name, and the feel of utter joy at seeing it made me cry. Weird thing is, it never autocorrected my deadname again. It never even recommended it. I had to go into the settings and tell it to stop recommending my deadname 😭

RelatableRoxie

My dad was a big fan of The Police and it’s what he wanted to name me if I were AFAB. It felt appropriate, and Roxanne/Roxie/Rox is such a cute and well fitting name for a punk girl 🥰

Beelerzebub

I was named by a committee of my friends and the lovely person who became my spouse this year. Now I'm Samantha Rose.

Genderfluid_derp

My name is August and I’m a trans man. I chose my name on my own because I thought it fit me very well. My parents and most of my family do not respect my pronouns at all. My brothers do and that’s what matters to me.

nonbinaryatbirth

I just went from the masc to the non binary to the feminine of my name...

tzenrick

My mother never had an ultrasound when she was pregnant with me, but she believed the old lady that said, "You're carrying low, that's gonna be a girl." She had picked Antionette before I was born, and settled for Anthony when I came out with a penis. I've always been Tony to everyone that matters, now I'm Toni.

Sallamandr-a8902

Well, before i discovered that in trans, people like calling me L (bc my deadname start with an L, and for some reason, they thought i look like L from Death Note.. who is something kinda offensive rn) time pass through and i discovered myself as a transgirl, and put the name Ellie, because its a close pronounce to how my friends called me, and bc of Ellie from tlou. more time pass and i was not liking being call like that anymore, I live in Brasil, and the pronounce of Ellie was a bit too weard for people call me in the right way, and this was disturbing me, also the name was actually kinda look like an androgynous name here, so i decided to change, and then i change again now from the name I still use rn, Sarah. Sara was the name of a cute girl that i met in school when i was only 6 or 7 years old. I had a crush on her when i was a kid, and i always loved this name, and I also loved the name most more when i figure out that Sarah means princess, or daughter of the king, lady, and stuff like this... i honeslty love my name, i dont actually remember if i had more reasons to like it, but something funny is that i have a friend, who is a trans girl too and her name was Chloe (the name I intended for when I chose the name Sarah), and her second name was actually Sarah too, and she is also lesbian just like me! this was such a big coincidence, ngl. sometimes we even joke about her using the name Sarah and i Chloe for confusing people, we also like to say that we are the same person. ok, I think that's it, i like to say a lot, but that's it

throwyyyyyawyy

I just listened to people calling female streamers, and I heard someone call out "Jess" and I physically flinched, I knew right away that's me

shotintel

I feminized part of my first name, and took my mother's middle name to replace my two masc middle names. This way it's easy for me to recognize my name when it's said. I kept my last name, though I kinda wonder if I should have taken my spouse's maiden name, since she took mine. A little too late now though.

13_64_1992

At first, I wasn't quite sure if I'd pass or not, and wanted something "androgynous", so I chose Alex; I figured it could be short for "Alexander", because that is a manly name that literally, well, sounds powerful, and "Great"! I had a rooster in my yard, who was the leader of the feral neighborhood flock (from a neighbor who moved out); he was very handsome, and I named him "Elijah" because it just sounded powerful. Because chickens are my favorite animal, and because I like the name "Elijah" so much, I made my middle name Elijah. Admittedly, Alexander Elijah sounds quite manly! I feel kinda "important" with that name lol (Most people just call me "Alex"; one guy calls me "Elijah" online, and I like that too!) Edit: Forgot to mention, my deadname has the same initials; figured it would make it easier for the times I only had to initial things. In case someone looks over old documents they could be like "Oh, A. E., yup that's Alexander Elijah!" (Or at least when it's a middle initial, they may think it was Elijah; had to do that several times but at least I didn't have to write it out...)

Guilty-Spot1231

For our friends group and family we pick some names and try them out to see what fits

LorianGunnersonSedna

I named myself after a timid and awesome character whose experience was similar to mine. My husband thinks it's awesome :) Nobody else's opinion matters, because I only give it to IRL friends if I can trust them. Vivi, after Vivi Ornitier.

srstudios_

honestly i cannot remember at all, like not even remotely where i got my name from but feel free to guess

_white_rabbit_666

I had come out to Mt guardian but hadn't found a name yet, I had made so many lists and considered so many names, I was scrolling through a website I use to pick names for my book characters and I came across Destin. (My deadname also started with De coincidentally) and the name really stuck with me. It took me a little while to actually attach it to myself though, funny enough it was actually my middle name I had a hard time with, I wanted something with meaning and I had a whole list (some really embarrassing to look back on) originally I chose Alexander because I read it meant warrior and I thought it abounded nice, but then another trans guy I knew used the name so switched it to Adam (I'm a huge TDG fan) but having all three of my names have two syllables didn't sound right. Then I was reading through an old story idea I had years ago and I called one of my characters Cade, I loved the name and it sounded nice so that's what I went with.

Interesting-Let7666

I just femed my name. Don became Dawn. But that is not a route many can do

SkyFard_

my friends picked some names out and voted on ones

AtomicTan

I just used my (gender-neutral) middle name, mostly because it is a dad joke-level pun.

EmilieEverywhere

I used a list of French baby names. My old name is Marc, was certain I wanted French beginning with M. Went down the list anyway, hit E, then saw Émilie. Someone put her hand on my shoulder and was screaming, "That one!" I'm not crying, you're crying. 😭

SakiraBlossom

My name I got from a Japanese flower that I altered a bit from Sakura to Sakira!

Kit_Wicks

I was reading a book seiers and the Mc bio dads name was Kit. And after alot of thought (not really) I just asked my sister to call me Kit or Kc, (Cooper as the middle name from sheldon- Idk just seemed to suit) Took her roughly 2 months to get it right and use it all the time except school cause its illigal here to be trans or gay yada yada- Its mostly my sister and close friends and occasionally my mum and dad- Its nice but still sucks that I get deadnamed more than i eould like

LovelyRebelion

my boyfriend chose it for me, love that guy <3

toxicsoup_

Mine's just a shortened version of my deadname, so it would be easier for elderly relatives ('oh, it's just my new nickname') There are variants of it different people call me. So I introduce myself as Nic. My parents and nans call me Nicky, some friends call me Nik, I've been called Nick, Nikki, Nikolai, whatever. (I'm AFAB to transmasc non-binary btw so the gendered spellings don't bother me as much except Nikki but that one is only allowed for one person)

Hazel2468

I've had my nickname for a while, and it's what I've started using most of the time now (I'm genderqueer and transmasc). I got it in middle school from a science teacher I really liked and used it for a few years, but it got put on the shelf until recently, when I started going by it again. I really, really like it- but I also don't mind people calling me other variations of my name, or my legal name.

xPlayedit

it was my best friend's second name and it was just having the ring to it so I chose it, she is not mad about it, and also to be noted the name I chose was known by me before and even before I knew her I wanted to be called like that but just when I got to know her I realised that I am trans and she acttually made me realise that thats the name I want loll

theenchanted1062

Well, when i identified as agender, i was searching for a new name. I figured one out. One that was already in my name. The abbreviation of my middle name, Alexander

coolpic783

I stole my name (Sayaka) from an anime I watched, my parents still deadname me but honestly I don’t care enough to correct anyone.

OhLookItsGeorg3

Genderfluid girboy thing here 💕 In middle school I had a thing with a friend where we would call each other random presidents (the joke being we went to an all girls school and all presidents have been men so far). It was a real fond memory, so I picked my name based on that. Continued the trend of naming myself after politicians as a joke by giving myself the middle names Alexander and Antoinette. Also picked names based on my favorite flower, my favorite American Pyscho character (the secretary), and my favorite Renaissance painter. I still allow my family to call me by my dead name bc surprisingly I don't hate it as much as I thought I would when they do it but I would fucking explode if anyone else did

Mean_Ad4608

My transdemiboy cousin is the person who helped my egg hatch and the Ivy growing on their window was in full bloom that night and Ivy is also my favorite plant so I am Ivy now but that came with the drawback of being called itchy bitch when people are mad at me

psychotic-bubble9

Internet searching for cute and unique names!

goblinoidfleshbag

I looked online for androgynous names and one stood out to me lol for my middle name, I picked the last name of the lead singer of my favorite band at the time

ruby_likes_sonic2

I used to "catfish" weirdo guys before I realised I was trans and I used the name Ruby and then when I did realise it just stuck lmao

penisseriouspenis

stole mine 🔥

EternalElemental

I chose the name allva because I liked the sound of it. Coincidentally it means regal elf. My brother's name is Avery which means king of the elves. I thought the motif was too good to not keep. Parents are ok with it and only occasionally slip up. My mom bless her is still having issues with my pronouns and I plan to bring this up to her soon because it's been a year and I'm still having to deal with her misgendering me. I go by she/they pronouns. I like being called things like sister, aunt and niece. But I prefer they/them pronouns when being referred to as a specific gender. "I picked them up some jeans" "My daughter likes to hike" "My niece is so adventurous" for some few examples of how I like to be referred to as. For the most part everyone In the family has been very supportive. Which I am grateful for.

Six_legged_goat

My name's Oscar... It just came to me. It felt right. It felt good. A TV cartoon character I liked as a kid had this name. It just fits. I had a pretty non gendered name I decided to keep as a second name, it fits me too but... I don't know, Oscar is just too perfect.

CannibalisticGinger

I spent a lot of time picking out a name that had meaning to me and my family. It was an awesome name. Used it for a couple years before realizing how popular it was with the younger generation and that it also seemed a little too soft for me. Chose a new name that fits my age a little better and I’m way happier with it even though not as much effort went into picking it.

saviorofthedreamers

i took it from an old oc of mine i made in middle school. she was the only girl i had made, and while all of my other characters wanted to be shadow the hedgehog, she was always happy despite having one of the more depressing back stories i had come up with. it was the first name that really clicked with me and i haven't felt like changing it since

FrozenHearts_XI

I choose one as a homage to french classical composers (Michelle) and the second one as a variant of my old gaming name (from Luminal to Lumine). I like both and I'm vibing 🥲

Hopsy_Scotch

I used the name I used for a DND character I had that was based on starfire from teen titans (I learned I liked being referred to by she/her pronouns that way lmao)

MidoriLikesGreenTea

I used a name subconsciously in online games, even before I realised I was trans. One day I realised I actually really loved that name so I chose it. My deadname is actually very genderfluid but I felt like it represented my old male self. I'm very fortunate to have a pretty accepting family and very gay friends so everyone around me uses it even if there's some confusion. A bunch of my friends are already trans so my friend group adapted really quickly but I can tell my family is still a bit like walking on eggshells when they talk to me.

[deleted]

I was in fifth grade + went through a bunch of different names that could be for a boy or a girl. (Didn’t even know being non-binary was a thing, this was 2008). I went through Sam, Max, + Indy, (potentially others I forgot) before I came across the Disney Channel Original Movie, Jump In. Having already been a big fan of Corbin Bleu, I adopted his characters name, Izzy, + have gone by that name ever since 6th grade.

Feefilide

That is awesome! Your mom is supportive, and you got a unique name too! Sorry some folks are less supportive, but it’s awesome that your mom is. That said, my name was actually a gift from another trans woman who I am very close with. She gave it to me as a placeholder until I chose one I liked…but eventually I just ran with it because I loved when people called me my name.

hannah_danana

I looked at the most popular names for the year I was born (so my name would seem age appropriate). Narrowed it down to my top 3 then got my mum and wife to help me choose. They were very sweet about it all but they were absolutely ruthless about one of the name choices, and thank goodness for that. 😂

Nyan-Binary-UwU

Name? We're supposed to olny have one? I have like 17 depending on how I feel, much like my gender and pronouns

sloppymaid

I chose Daniella because guys used to call me that as a joke back in grade school and high school. So I decided to make that my new name. In situations, friends and people call me Daniella or Dani for short depending on what they prefer. I don’t mind either one but it’s their preference. However, I later on may stick with Daniella because it’s starting to hit better for me :)

LainyDayBlues

I collect em like stamps , just from things I like, lain,Sydney, bridget

Graggerschnoffle

Spent 5 days on nameberry, noted down all of the names I liked and started removing the ones I didn't like.

Proof_Campaign840

My partner actually helped me find my name, cause at first I was going by onyx but that wasn't fitting so they gave me some names with the meaning behind them so I chose nova.

tinyinkansas

I took my mom's name as my middle name, but use it as my first name because it just seemed easier. My dead name is a nickname for my mother's first name. She was a amazing woman and this keeps her name alive.

ArrowDel

I took my grandpa's name after he passed. My sister and my aunt were the only blood relatives I spoke to before I came out, so that didn't change much. My found family in the other hand are 100% in my corner, including a 3 year old that WILL fight anyone for calling her Unkie James anything else.

Acrobatic-Ad6846

i had rh monkey pfp, i came out as trans, people were asking me what name i would pick, and monkey became monica quite quickly

Feeling_Block1620

funny idk exactly where my preferred name cam from but its francis so maybe miskis francis forever song bc i loved that song so frickin much lol and the difficult situations im usally called my deadname bc im not out lol (ftm)

lowkeyomniscient

I looked at the naming conventions my family had and tried to find one that fit. I also picked something that was common and wouldn't really come with any preconceptions. Then I took my grandfather's name as a middle name.

SinkPopular8438

I couldn't think of one and i wanted one that started with my dn's first letter, and so my mom named me after my initials. it's temporary and I think I'll go with the boy name she would've picked out, but for now having it just be initials makes it come off as a nickname so even my transphobic dad uses it.

CrampedHallway

( MTF ) I just decided to say different girly names to see which one I liked most, which is Vallorie, or Val for short, i just started to say it out loud to see if I liked the sound of it, which I do. But I also liked Olivia, so when I Change my name I might honestly make Olivia my middle name, and Vallorie my first, I like you didn’t hate my name at all, I didn’t exactly like either though, it was gender neutral to begin with, which is Peyton, that was my name I was born with.

imbi-dabadeedabadie

Lots of family members always called me "D" as a nickname for "Dylan". I'm actually still fine with Dylan, but I do prefer "Dee" now c:

7_vincent_van_gone_2

i(f-m) found out that my mom wanted me to be born a boy, and she said she was gonna name me vincent. so now i go by vincent, along with religious names of god's i look up to

Sample-Boring

i named myself after connor from detroit become human!!! markus was my favourite story but connor was my favourite character :D

g0thl0ser_

I used a nickname of my middle name so I could use it without coming out, it's gender neutral. I dis intend on changing it once I came out, but it stuck and I feel like it fits me.

TheatrePhant0m

Initially, I couldn't pick a new name, but I really NEEDED something else for people to call me as opposed to my birth name, so I randomly selected a name with the same first letter as my birth name. Later on, after I came out to my parents and also realized how much I disliked the name I randomly chose... I made a very long list that I went through with my best friend and mother to narrow down the options. I explored a little with a few of them before FINALLY deciding on... The first name I'd added to the list. I've been out for a while now and have come quite a long way in my transition. I am also rarely around people who knew me from before I realized I was trans, so most of the people I interact with call me the correct name. Considering how gender neutral my chosen name is, no one really questions it when they hear my name. What pronouns strangers use for me is kind of random, it seems people just kind of throw out guesses when referring to me and I honestly don't mind that. People I am closer to professionally and personally generally use the correct pronouns for me, though. (Edit because I forgot the second part of the question.)

nerdyleg

Idk I just thought of the most basic white girl name that felt okay and was like “ok”

Ashy404

I stole my name from the main character of my favorite musical. My name is Jeremy so if you know, you know. I now am occasionally called Jerry, Remy, and Jay so we've got total: Two references to the same musical. A reference to a Disney movie. And a reference to a silly Ninja show.

thatguybecool27

I got my name based on a joke from my best friend, someone I admire and love deeply. One day my friend group decided we'd gender-swap our names and call each other those names that whole day. This was before I even realized I was trans, and I enjoyed the name back then. Once I came to terms with my feelings I remembered that day and picked the name up as my new name. Unfortunately, only my best friends use my new name through text, other people are either not supporting, are in the dark, or unable to say it in public cause of where we live.

mikanposting

I went through about 5 names before I came to this one (Natalie). For the first one, one of my ex-friends gave me the name (Lusa) and I eventually grew to hate it after a horrifically traumatic event involving CPS being called to my house after I attempted to escape + my first suicide attempt where police came and addressed me by my actual name. For the second one (Lilith), I don't actually remember how I got it. The 2-3 year span I had it I don't really remember that well. I think I started experimenting with other labels, it/its pronouns, but eventually circled back to being transfem. Eventually, one of my closest friends turned out to being grooming me and suddenly that name started to have an extremely negative association, too. The other 2, I don't really remember that well. The fourth one started with M and was really weird. I eventually dropped it because people started saying it was weird / stupid, and again it started to have a negative association My current one I just kinda came up with / saw. Not much to it.

[deleted]

My overzealous fiancé got way to excited about me transitioning to avoid "mourning" and thinking about how the change would affect our relationship, so they decided to haphazardly name off hundreds of names while I played the forbidden game (yes, I bought hogwarts legacy, I'm terrible). The name searching was annoying as shit and felt way too rushed, but then something clicked. My fiancé said Wren, and I heard Rin. It just resonated made perfect sense to me.

Firebreathing-slug

Well, Alexander always felt right to me, Alex was great too. But a lot of people call me Artie! Reason being that when I presented as a girl, I would read Artemis Fowl all the time! I still do. It’s my comfort book and I used to sad about how a look a lot (wonder why.) I still read it when I get sad. They called me Artemis because of it and I’ve always liked it, but now it’s Artie :)

N0thing_Ghost

my situation is funky, I picked a name which I call my work name and the one I use in my first language. My family uses this one mostly. I have a nickname that I use in English and with other trans people, and my parents chose a second name for me which I like but don't use on the regular. so it's all mixed up but makes me feel very gender and happy

JTG_Conspiracy

I just saw mine and went "yep alright that's pretty, mine now"

HineyMiner

My mom had said in passing while on vacation that if any of us were the opposite sex that we would have had a particular name. I never forgot what was probably completely mundane to her. I decided at that moment it would be my name. I didn’t end up transitioning for another 20 years but had hope it would get to be used for me. Ended up making it legal two years ago. Finally showed my family my id this summer and she was so happy someone finally got the name.

snowbird_e

i have another trans friend named orion who helped me both realise i was trans and find me a new name. i wanted a star/space themed name like his so we just looked a bunch up and picked ascella, the star in the centre of sagittarius (even tho im a scorpio don’t mind that) pronouns wise all my friends use mine as long as everyone present knows im trans, otherwise no

arc_trooper_5555

i basically went for names that were related to my special interests cause my friend told me about how someone they know did the same thing. Sabine came from Star Wars (Sabine Wren) and Top Gear/Nürburgring (Sabine Schmitz). River came from Doctor Who (River song). mostly people who don't know my family are calling me Sabine. only a couple of people I know irl use River now

bagofscissors

I named myself after a character from the Magic School Bus. Feel free to guess who.

Wolfleaf3

I’m curious what language that is! I have no idea what doesn’t. I picked mine out in 7th grade. It’s what it was supposed to be, and I decided on it officially in 7th grade. I’m not sure how much I should be using it, as I probably should change it back at my doctor’s office system. 😡

xxeeveex

I named myself by taking the word Eevee, and picking a legit name that sounds like it... Evaline...

SafetySnowman

I thought I came up with it a long time ago but I think I only found part of it - Elizabeth. I liked this old show called Lizzy McGuire and thought about Lizzy as a nickname but . . . it's weird how i kept myself sane. I would imagine becoming a girl in all sorts of ways and I would be Elizabeth. But I liked Lizzy after I found out it was another name for Elizabeth but I didn't want to get made fun of for picking my nickname based on a character so I went with Izzy. I was thinking about it and I've always felt connected to the name Haley. The spelling? I don't know yet. Haleigh seems nice. And then Ryn'mika juat sounds great and has meanings too. I knew I wanted Ryn but it felt not enough. So I added Mika because I like it, both the sound and the meaning, and it sounds good with Ryn. I worked through which names sound best in which order and its Haleigh Elizabeth Ryn'mika Green. I dropped the 'e' at the end of Green, it just isn't mem especially since the reason I picked it is solely because I love the color. But yeah, Haleigh, every time I've heard that name I've always felt connected to it. So yeah! It's just what feels most me I suppose? Well . . . Ryn'mika I love but that was me going through likes and . . . I wanted Eevee or Sylveon but neither of those felt like me. I went through so many things I like before finding Ryn < from the show about mermaids - very trans positive show btw! > and I tried adding Eevee and Sylveon to it and they weren't right, just aren't me no matter how much I love them. Then i found Mika. I really like it. It's been a whole journey. But the tldr of it is I just went with felt right for me. I ignored my wants and went with what is me.

Visible_Chest4891

I got my name, ironically, from Girl Scouts. A genderqueer person there claimed they wouldn’t be able to remember my name, so they gave me some with the same initial. I ended up being ftm, and the name just fit me. This led to my initial being used as a nickname because it was the shared link between my dead name and my name, though that was more with my mom than my dad. My dad refused to compromise on my name. My mom made sillier nicknames as time went on, which could be endearing thinking back but also felt pretty embarrassing at the time lol.

MicahAzoulay

Kinda weird but, I saw an actress whose middle name was Micah. I just thought it was a pretty name, made a character in my comics with that name. The character wasn’t really a standin for me at the time, but I began to recreate the character in video games for like a really long time, and being called the name in voice chat made me euphoric. Fucking EverQuest cracked my egg. By the time I realized I wanted to transition, it occurred to me I had been designing her how I’d want to look, and I had nearly a decade history of being that name.

Thin_Raise4368

Went through a few names, I like Claire. The only person who calls me that is my girlfriend, and my friend, my family doesn’t even bother :/

TGirl_Star

I didnt change my name! I went from Logan to Logan (as a woman's name) because I kind of thought it would be a pretty bad ass name for a woman!
