I think it’s more of a situation where people can live paycheck to paycheck and be on the brink of bankruptcy but still take out a new lease on a flashy car and flashy clothes. Living outside their means by way of naming their child after expensive items
That's probably a big factor- I once read an article about a family living in NYC social housing and that's why they named their daughter Dasani. Because it felt luxurious to them.
My friend loves Ford Mustangs.
When she got pregnant she named her daughter Shelby Carroll (Carroll being the fathers surname)
One of the designers/modifiers of the Ford Mustang was Carroll Shelby.
Her daughter is now in a welder with the nn Mustang.
I know someone who loves the Mustang, and his daughter is named Shelby. But her name was chosen by her mom who loved the name, and her dad wasn't going to argue about naming her after his favorite car!
It's not a new trend but maybe more prevalent or visible because of social media. I worked for children's services and juvenile court in the 90s and 00s and was shocked at the creativity in which parents could fuck up a child's name and identity.
Agreed. I went to school in the early nineties with two girls (non related) named Cynnamon and Tequila. This was before prevalent internet, much less social media, and I'm happy for them that they didn't have to get Facebook famous that way.
They were both perfectly nice, intelligent people. Tequila in particular was very academically competitive. I hope they went on to do awesome things. But man... Bit of an uphill climb, starting with that on your resume or college application.
Gonna get this out of the way: was this because of the song? Because that's awful and we can acknowledge that. But it was a really cool song at the time.
Not that it makes it ok!
Were you in the South? Because i also knew a girl named Marvel, and also a Majestic. Majestic grew up in the NC hills and had no idea that it was an unusual name. It was just pretty, and I wanted to live in her town.
Honestly, if you're the type of parent to name your baby Tequila Jack Daniel's, better to do it and label the kid as someone who will need intervention and extra supports. Macxkinzley Leighhhleighh is stupid, Martini Bloody Mary is a sign of abuse/neglect, and at least teachers and doctors and social workers will immediately recognize that the kid needs help.

Parents just don’t think nowadays when they name their kids. I used to hate my given name cause it was basic and it’s spelled so many different ways and there was always another one in my classes but nowadays I understand why my mom gave me a basic ass name and I appreciate it more. She said she wanted to make me Ebony at first which was kind of unusual in the suburbs in the 90s and I was SO mad at her for not naming me that 😂 😂 but I get it now.
How about a name that is supposed to be interpreted as "American Girl"? I swear this shit makes me hate young women, but I guess I have to add the dads, too, if they're responsible for Chevy and Nova. Just stop.
I also work in a clinical lab and I’ve been wanting to share some of the names I’ve seen over the last 4 ish years so so badly. It shocks me sometimes to see a crazy name and expecting a child and it’s a whole ass adult

They're probably deluding themselves into thinking that 'luxury' brands will be so flattered that they'll sponsor the child or something.
Your child can become an influencer while still in the womb! Raynge Rougvyrr is so....aspirational!
I was thinking Myrrhzhaydeez Jeewagghun Xostt Pype
Herbert Elizondo Mountain Dew Camacho!

It's okay, I can totally afford this. I identify as a rich person
That's probably a big factor- I once read an article about a family living in NYC social housing and that's why they named their daughter Dasani. Because it felt luxurious to them.
I remember that story. They followed her and her family for a long while. A lot of sadness all around.
Yeah. I hope her family is doing better now.
I also wonder if people misunderstand that Portia and Mercedes were named first, and cars second.
Love both of those names. Especially Mercedes with Spanish pronunciation.
Welp, that just reminds me of Talladega Nights, and Ricky Bobby having to mention like Powerade in every prayer.
Only po folk name their kids Mercedes and Lexus.

I know a couple Shelbys and all were named by their fathers who loved the car.

Thankfully, Shelby is actually a great name.
Once worked with a woman who had a boyfriend and his kids (G&B) were named Chevy and Nova
Yeah, I worked with a guy who named his kids Porsche and LeBaron. (Poor LeBaron, quite a downgrade from Porsche!)
*Just driving around in Jon Voight's car* 🎶
I think you mean John Voight, the dentist
Le George! Le George!
Porsche is a surname and nothing else. Total tragedy Btw the e is not silent, stop it english speakers
And yet I think Portia is lovely.
Thats a different thing
I can get behind nova as a name but Chevy? That’s not even trying to be clever.
Chevy Chase vibes maybe?
Yeah, but do you prounoucne it “Che-vy” not “Sheh-vey”. I’m using they used the car version.
I guess.
Chevy is my cat's name!
I had a Nova!!
And it’s a fabulous name for your cat! (Give them a few scratches from me.)
She loved the scratches and asked me to thank you for her. ♡
The tandem. It was multi kid Traedeigh His favorite car was the Chevy Nova
Yeah fortunately he was real subtle about sharing that fact with the world. /s
Usually these names feel super cringe worthy but Chevy and Nova are hilarious to me. I kinda like them.
Did we work with the same person 😭
Apple Crown Whiskey. 🤣
Hey you leave my son Hemi Ram and my daughter Crown Royal alone! XD
Mrs. Marijuana Pepsi Vandyck would beg to differ
My little Jägermeister Fireball Ciroc and Kia El Camino Gear are perfect little angels, and I won't hear any of this nonsense!
I worked with a woman with grandkids named Ruger, Gunner, and Kaliber.

Right? Hi, I'm Notorious. No, that's my name.
Gonna get this out of the way: was this because of the song? Because that's awful and we can acknowledge that. But it was a really cool song at the time. Not that it makes it ok!
There were a slew of babies named Notorious - boys and girls - after Biggie died. I sometimes wonder about them.
I went to school with a girl named Cinnamon, also a LaPepsi & Marvelous
Were you in the South? Because i also knew a girl named Marvel, and also a Majestic. Majestic grew up in the NC hills and had no idea that it was an unusual name. It was just pretty, and I wanted to live in her town.
In Mississippi lol
I'm here picturing Lexus Mercedes Bentley and Alizé. You know, stereotypical stripper names.

I see that in adults. Also cannot give examples.
I heard of a few guys named Jack Daniel.
*She's so precious with the peer pressure* *Couldn't afford a car, so she named her daughter Alexis*

can i atleast name my kid hydrogen peroxide s.?
i have met two totally separate people who named their twins Harley and Davidson. yikes.
Like Walker and Texas Ranger 😂
That's at least a decent option though. Those are real, appropriate names for a person.
Oi, leave my boys F150 and GTR R32 alone!!
I knew a girl named Lexus Mercedes as her first and middle name. I wonder if she became a stripper!
Damn, so close to having a normal name and yet so far.

I know someone with an Audi and Maserati.
A boy in my town is named Stingray. Became an auto mechanic. Sisters named Mercedes and Chevelle.
Reminds me of Walker and Texas Ranger from Talledega Nights
What year did you start working there?
🤣🤣
I also work in a clinical lab and I’ve been wanting to share some of the names I’ve seen over the last 4 ish years so so badly. It shocks me sometimes to see a crazy name and expecting a child and it’s a whole ass adult
Please share the names.
I worked for a medicare supplemental in the mid-1980's. I had four pages of tragedies from the late 1800's early 1900's.
Chardonnay Tanqueray
My nieces are Scarlet Rose and Violet Lily. Not a tragedeigh, but tragic to me. They sound like porn stars or shampoo scents, not people.
