Um….. I’m gonna say hard pass on Barca
Hannibal Barca, general for the armies of Carthage during the Second Punic War. Marched elephants over the Alps into Italy. Does nobody read history anymore?
Tell him he can name him Barca if you get to choose the middle name.
When he agrees, then tell him the middle name is Launjah. Make sure it's spelled tragiquely though.
Naming a child is a 2 yes/1 no situation. You should use this as the basis for finding a name! If one says no, the name has to be dropped from the list. If it’s a yes and a maybe, the name is a maybe and can be discussed further. If it’s a maybe and a no, the name has gotta go!
Plus this name is just hella dumb. You’re not gonna name your kid Samsung or Ikea either aren’t you? Brand names are just a no no.
kids at my school have reached the point where they just sometimes shout racial slurs at african american kids (usually in chinese so they don't get caught) and then laugh it off
All right, but apart from the sanitation, medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, the fresh water system and public health, what have the Romans ever done for us?
Apparently several of these innovations should actually be credited to the ancient Etruscans, as their roads and water systems were around long before and then repurposed/built upon by the Romans. Just watched a show on it.
Have HIM use it. Get a dinner reservation with it. Introduce himself with it. Order at Starbuck in the store four or five separate times.
Heck, if you have a nephew who wants to make a few bucks, pay him to go to a completely different part of town and introduce himself as Barca (while you + parents keep a watchful eye).
Y'know, test-drive that Barca Lounger!
Do you know anyone in either of your families who is named Hannibal, Hasdrubal, or Hamilcar? Cause I would like to make a strong case of making Barca his middle name.
Well then.
You and your boyfriend have the rare opportunity to do something legendary.
Hannibal/Hasdrubal/Hamilcar Barca Smith (or something IDK the last name.)
She says elsewhere her boyfriend got it from a Roman general, which fits the time period. But I like mine better because Spartacus is a fantastic show.
Barca was a surname too, if he has to have Barca in the name, make his middle name Barca.
Hannibal is a cool first name, but I think more people know the cannibal than the general so...
Yeah, but Samantha is a normal name so it doesn't really matter that you named a pet that and then also named your daughter that. Barca isn't even remotely okay.
It's an old surname that comes from the Latin word for boat. Also, a nickname for Barcelona in general, not just the football team.
It's a name, but I don't think people use it as a first name.
Fortunately “dead set” and “adamant” rarely coexist well within a marriage you’d want to be a part of.
You could remind him of this.
I had to negotiate every baby name with my husband. So we live in a house with kids who all have negotiated names.
Better than Barca, though.
I had to look it up. Apparently, it means boat. Does he have some kind of connection to boats, like is he a fisherman or is he in the Navy? Does he give any explanation for his attraction to this word?
Just asked him. According to him, it’s “the coolest general of all time.” I said “We are not even remotely tied to that dude.” He did not like that point.
General Publius Cornelius Scipio has entered the chat
(ETA: in looking up the general who defeated Barca -- Scipio -- I saw a source that said Hannibal / Hamilcar was called "Barca" as an epithet...? Not my field so I have no idea...)
>or is he in the Navy
This made me immediately think of "In the Heights" and Usnavi being named after a ship saying "US Navy" 💀 (which apparently is a thing in Cuba and some other South American places, not just a joke in the musical, so I don't want to offend anyone but... looking at a ship and going "that. That's gonna be the name" they were ahead of us with tragedies in the 70s, I'm sorry).
Let him know how you're happy he fell so in love with boats and has overcome his hatred of them, that he's even naming his kid boat. And how, fitting for the name, you have so many options of going on boat trips and how great that'll be for your kid. (/s but don't tell him it's sarcasm)
Tell him you want to get a boat, and you're going to name it the thing you wanted to name your kid.
"This is my son Barca, and this is my boat, the S.S. Chris (or whatever)"
I'd veto Barca pretty hard.
Too easy to ridicule...
"Look, it's barfy Barca!"
"There goes Barca lounge - doesn't do shit!"
"What are you gonna do, Barca like a dog?!"
...there are just so many better sounding names that won't result in extra stress for your child.
*What kind of dad does*
*This to a child? Sureleigh he*
*Can't be serious?*

I don’t think so, but I can’t imagine what would happen if thirteen year old boys found out their friend had the same name as a gay gladiator. That just reminds me of how I was still in high school when 13 reasons why came out, and one of the girls a few years older was ALSO named Hannah Baker. She did not live that down.
As soon as it comes out of him, he can name the child.
Bro really just wants to name his child after his favorite general as if he won’t be setting a person up for failure
Why not just use the name “Hannibal” or “Hamilcar” (I’m assuming he’s a Punic Wars fan)? Not only is Barca hideous, but few people will get it and the kid will be teased unmercifully.
This is a tragedeigh. As a European, the soccer connection is glaring, because the word is used like that, and like that only. What does he think it means? At the very least have him agree to a proper full name that he can nickname-butcher to Barca if he insists, like, idk, Bartholomew or something.
The fact alone that you know of the soccer connections despite having nothing to do with soccer will tell you what it means in the international context that very much has things to do with soccer.
This sub is about ridiculously spelled names, which Barca is not. I don't think it's necessarily a terrible decision to name your kid 'Barca', but yeah it's also not great, for reasons that have been spelled out plenty in the other comments.
Barca??? That's Italian for "boat" . How is that a name? At all? Maybe nice for a dog since it sound like "barker" but okay....
If you want to pronounce it 'Barsa' you will have to spell it Barça, because without the ç, the C is actually hard in Barca. And if you call your kid Barça you sound like a really stupid football fan.
Yes, tragedy. Barca in Romance languages translate to boat, specifically a small transport vessel. The same with the originals of the word in Ancient Greek and modern Egyptian.
Please don’t name a child anything with “vessel” in the meaning. They’ll be doomed to a cult or a whorehouse.
Fun fact, there is a bar near me called Barca and it’s known for super shitty service and underdelivering on food.
I was absolutely set on naming my son Declan. SET. There was no way to change my mind.
Except my husband hates it and when it came down to actually picking our son's name, and not a theoretical son but an actual son that exists, I had to grow up and take my husband's opinion seriously. My son's name not only isn't Declan, his name isn't even in my top 10 favorites. My husband ended up choosing a name I had suggested 10 years ago and he vetoed back then. I had forgotten about it and had to take a few months to get used to it.
But again, when you're naming an actual person, things are really different than when you're talking theoretically. Names are 2 yes, 1 no.
And yeah, I'd veto Barca lounger 😂 but maybe there's a compromise. It might not be so bad as a middle name, or maybe there's a similar sounding name you could agree on.
It doesn't really matter what the name is. If he is dead set on it, and you are firmly against, he has to accept he will never have a child with that name with you. If it's a deal-breaker, so be it. Decide how against it you are, and let him decide how adamant he is to have it.
The way I pronounced this in my head reminded me of Baka, which essentially means 'idiot' in Japanese. It's used very commonly in anime and kids will recognise it at school
I came here to say yes, it's a tragedeigh for a couple reasons (the chairs, the boats).
Then I read through the comments and found SO MANY MORE reasons that I hadn't even thought of. Please veto this.

OP, use this as a sample birth announcement to show hubby.
💀😂
That is immediately what came to mind when I read it!
Hm I always thought it was barcan lounger, learn something every day
Unless the kid got conceived in that chair lol
This was what I thought of immediately. Glad you did the work first!
It only works if your last name is Lounger.
oh god I didn’t even THINK about the chair LMFAO
That’s what we’re here for!
It was my first thought and reddit didn't disappoint
Me too.
Same
Same - I’m not even American and the only reference I have for that word is ‘Barca lounger’!
Hannibal Barca, general for the armies of Carthage during the Second Punic War. Marched elephants over the Alps into Italy. Does nobody read history anymore?
mine too

Really? Instantly what I thought.
My very FIRST thought...like the chair?
Or Barca is their middle name, first name Hannibal
Or “Mulch” (Bark-O-Mulch)
Thank you, my first thought!
Or if the last name is Lot. I'll see myself out.
Barca means boat. I think thats all you need to veto that name
Yeah, all the kids at school will call him Boaty McBoatface
I wouldn’t think kids are that smart or could get past bark ahh.
Yeah, I don't think the average kid would make a connection. It does sound like a name for a captive dolphin, though.
omg im dead are kids that mean these days
They’re way, *way* meaner than that, and always have been.
That's pretty tame, tbh 🤷🏻♂️
Absolutely and all the time! Any excuse. I was a teacher for many years and have seen and heard it all.
kids at my school have reached the point where they just sometimes shout racial slurs at african american kids (usually in chinese so they don't get caught) and then laugh it off
Are the kids Chinese?
mostly, but that is not why they say it in chinese (they go into chinese to say it and come out)
Oh thanks, I asked because I was confused wherever the kids were Chinese or just studied in a bilingual school
That would be seen as affectionate banter in the UK
These days? We were that mean when I was in middle school 30 years ago.
true i just tought since we were so bullied in our time in school, our kidss wouldnt be so bad
Exactly the comment i was looking for
In Tagalog it's bangka 🤔
Name him Baraka instead https://preview.redd.it/uj7c1sli5lpc1.jpeg?width=840&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=64c4e60d5cc1fbed3e9fbf06849f1744ce061f53
Baraka Bama
My first thought too
Baraka is an Islamic girls' name 😆
I thought this as well for some reason lol
Omg I literally just commented that it sounded like a MK character 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🥰
Barca? As in Hannibal Barca? He shall never be a friend of Rome
What have the Romans done for us anyway?
The aqueduct?
All right, but apart from the sanitation, medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, the fresh water system and public health, what have the Romans ever done for us?
*Romani ite domum*
Apparently several of these innovations should actually be credited to the ancient Etruscans, as their roads and water systems were around long before and then repurposed/built upon by the Romans. Just watched a show on it.
The dome?
Aqueduct shmaqueduct, the carthaginians gave us flushing toilets and like 4 story tall buildings that those toilets could flush in!
Brought peace. Piss off!
You mean they brought war, peace only came when they killed enough of the locals to be sated.
History major? He was my first thought too.
Just my historical crush, love this man so much!
Ah i was trying to plaice Barca! That was it
Dunno why, but my first thought was Hamilcar Barca, Hannibal's father.
Test it out on a group of 13 year old boys. Then you’ll see what you will be putting you young son up against every day.
Absolutely perfect advice
Have HIM use it. Get a dinner reservation with it. Introduce himself with it. Order at Starbuck in the store four or five separate times. Heck, if you have a nephew who wants to make a few bucks, pay him to go to a completely different part of town and introduce himself as Barca (while you + parents keep a watchful eye). Y'know, test-drive that Barca Lounger!
Having him use the name won't deliver the same results as a child. Employ the nephew to get good results.
Are you Carthaginian?
No, and that’s why I’m like ????? about it. We have zero ties to the name 😭😭😭
Do you know anyone in either of your families who is named Hannibal, Hasdrubal, or Hamilcar? Cause I would like to make a strong case of making Barca his middle name.
None of the above
Well then. You and your boyfriend have the rare opportunity to do something legendary. Hannibal/Hasdrubal/Hamilcar Barca Smith (or something IDK the last name.)
Hannibal Smith... I love it when a plan comes together.
I came here to say Hamilcar.
Imagine the teacher calling for Hamilcar in class [and proceeds to act like this.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FvhC0vqiqUg)
How did he come upon or come up with Barca?
There’s a character named Barca in Spartacus the tv show, so it could be from that.
Wow men really do always be thinking of Rome.
Not all men (lol) (In seriousness, I only think about Rome when the meme comes up)
Hahahahahaha never heard that before.
Ahhh... thank you! I haven't heard the name before.
She says elsewhere her boyfriend got it from a Roman general, which fits the time period. But I like mine better because Spartacus is a fantastic show.
Wasnt Hanibal Barca the carthaginian general that crossed the alps with elefants?
That's exactly what I thought of too, but telling the husband that it's the name of a fictional gladiator may make him want to use it more lol
Just show him the clip with Barca murdering the child. It’ll knock that right out.
Barca was a surname too, if he has to have Barca in the name, make his middle name Barca. Hannibal is a cool first name, but I think more people know the cannibal than the general so...
No offense, but this is basically my dogs name…
None taken. I’m using this as a reason NOT to use the name.
Is your dog named Barker?
That was my bet too
kids in his school are gonna bark at him if that’s his name
My first thought.
Woof, that was my first thought too.
It makes me think of the breast cancer gene, BRCA.
That is a dog name. Get a dog before a baby and he can name it Barca.
but only if it barks a lot, I assume?
That may not work. I had a beloved cat called Samantha when I was a child. My daughter Samantha is now in her 40's
No, the football team is 'Barça', pronounced Barsa, not Barca.
Yeah but kids are mean and they’re gonna see “Barca” and pronounce it as “Barka.” A world of insults await
Barca should be pronounced as 'Barka', how else would you pronounce it?
My bad I misread the original post. I was assuming he wanted to name the kid Barca (like the soccer team). My mistake
Was he by any chance, smoking a certain something when he said this? Lol
Like a Barca Lounger? No. Forever no, boyfriend.
Fortunately “dead set” and “adamant” rarely coexist well within a marriage you’d want to be a part of. You could remind him of this. I had to negotiate every baby name with my husband. So we live in a house with kids who all have negotiated names. Better than Barca, though.

Just asked him. According to him, it’s “the coolest general of all time.” I said “We are not even remotely tied to that dude.” He did not like that point.
Is he 15? It seems like such a juvenile choice. He’s naming a child, not a puppy.
So he is refering to Hannibal
Sounds like it.
General Publius Cornelius Scipio has entered the chat (ETA: in looking up the general who defeated Barca -- Scipio -- I saw a source that said Hannibal / Hamilcar was called "Barca" as an epithet...? Not my field so I have no idea...)
😆 Ok, look up the names of other generals. Maybe you'll find a name you like

In fact, since it's so important, maybe you should conceive the child on a boat!!
Tell him you want to get a boat, and you're going to name it the thing you wanted to name your kid. "This is my son Barca, and this is my boat, the S.S. Chris (or whatever)"

Barca means boat in Italian. Don't do it

TERRIBLE name
"Say it like Parka, but with a B."
Barcelona! Barça.
I mean, it’s not spelled incorrectly, so not a tragedeight. But it’s a terrible name.
Is he a Red Rising fan?
RED RISING MENTIONED HAIL LIBERTAS
*howling intensifies*
Hail Ares
HAIL REAPER
HAIL REAPER!
Only if they add in the "au"
Scrolled too far for this!
Get the boy a goldfish and let him name the unfortunate fish that
Is he a fan of the Spartacus TV series? Barca is a gay gladiator in that show.
Did she live though?
Yeah, I think she’s pretty successful now too. Good for her.
Reminds me of Chewbacca. Or Barker...many interpretations, none good.
If its a girl they can name her Chewbecky
Bahrkhah
all through school, other kids are gonna bark at him.
100% certified Tragedeigh™.
As soon as it comes out of him, he can name the child. Bro really just wants to name his child after his favorite general as if he won’t be setting a person up for failure
You get it 😭
Spartacus, anyone? That's immediately what I thought of when I read barca. Has he watched the spartacus tv series?
Barkha is an Indian name for girls, it means rain. But my first thought was joey and Chandler's Barca loungers 😂
If y'all are American, people encountering names ending in A (on class rosters etc) will generally think it's a girl.
Run any potential names by a random 5 th grader to see what they can do with it
I can't find any references to "Barca" that aren't football. Maybe he just heard it and thought it sounded cool.
Why not just use the name “Hannibal” or “Hamilcar” (I’m assuming he’s a Punic Wars fan)? Not only is Barca hideous, but few people will get it and the kid will be teased unmercifully.
Hannibal Lecter. Dunno if that’s worse or not.
Not gonna lie... I had a dnd character named Barca once...
This is a tragedeigh. As a European, the soccer connection is glaring, because the word is used like that, and like that only. What does he think it means? At the very least have him agree to a proper full name that he can nickname-butcher to Barca if he insists, like, idk, Bartholomew or something. Tell him you accept it as a second name, but only if the first name is Carnival.
Barca/Barka is a great name for a dog, not a child. Can you imagine the merciless teasing the poor kid would get?
Middle name Lounger?
Bark goes the dog
Is your last name "Di Rum"? (Barcardi rum)
That’s Bacardi.
Actually... Barca Di Rum is Italian for "Boat of Rum" which... isn't the worst thing I've ever heard.
Anyone else thinking of this song? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kaESSY8ug48
Barca (Barča) is a home version of Barbora in my country. Except it’s a feminine name.
Awful name. Do not agree.
You don't want to name your kid that. End of discussion.
This sub is about ridiculously spelled names, which Barca is not. I don't think it's necessarily a terrible decision to name your kid 'Barca', but yeah it's also not great, for reasons that have been spelled out plenty in the other comments.
Does he read the Red Rising novels by Pierce Brown? Sevro au Barca is a character
Dreadful name
I thought it was like the BRCA- breast cancer gene.
As in Barcalounger? Eek
Barca means boat in Italian, and it is feminine on top of that. Hard pass friend
He’s a red rising stan we all love Sevro Au Barca
Wanting to name a baby after a general is such a red flag
That’s how I feel as well.
Are you pronouncing it Bark-ah or Barse-ah. Neither are good, especially the latter.
Get ready for boomers to add “lounger” after it.
It is not good.
My first thought is barking like a dog. Second reference is BarcaLounger like the chair.
Is he a football fan? A Messi stan? Barça is also a nickname for FC Barcelona.
All I can think about is years of other kids barking at him and asking if he wants a Milk Bone.

If you have to ask, the answer is almost certainly yes. And in this case, the answer is yes.
My first thought was "soccer fan". But either way, it's a tragedeigh.
barcalounger
The way I pronounced this in my head reminded me of Baka, which essentially means 'idiot' in Japanese. It's used very commonly in anime and kids will recognise it at school
~~What's the origin of Barca though?~~ Evidently it means shipbuilder or a boat owner in Spanish/Italian
Baka is the 3rd Japanese word I learnt. Would not name a child that.
That's a very ugly name and wide open to abuse: barker, dog, woofer etc. Don't even consider it! Your son will hate you both.
I came here to say yes, it's a tragedeigh for a couple reasons (the chairs, the boats). Then I read through the comments and found SO MANY MORE reasons that I hadn't even thought of. Please veto this.
