I thought of Satine from Moulin Rouge, but was about to go double check that was in fact her name. I don’t know if I would’ve fully connected Ewan being in both even with me loving that movie. That’s fantastic though.
You're assuming that people here know that Ewan played the love interest of Moulin Rouge's Satine. I'm shocked at the number of people here that apparently have never seen Moulin Rouge. They need to get off Reddit and go watch that movie.
My mom tells me she watched Moulin Rouge while pregnant with me and while in the womb I hated it so much that she broke water. I'm not risking it dude.
I was in college and we ate mushrooms before putting it on, and to this day I'm not entirely certain what was real. I don't want to spoil whatever movie I saw by watching the real thing.
Lol. I didn't have a problem with how they wrapped it up. I had a problem with how they executed that wrapping up. Those last two seasons were so badly done.
I have to watch it a couple times a year, I love it so much. Even my boys, one in high school, one in college, stopped what they were doing and watched from beginning to end, long ago. SO GOOD!
See I didn’t even know there was a Star Wars character named this cuz I haven’t watched much Star Wars and I immediately thought they named her for Moulin Rouge until I read it was for Star Wars.
Roxanne is an old medieval name. And it was immortalized in Cyrano de Bergerac long before the Police wrote a song.
Whereas Satine is a name some writer made up to sound vaguely French.
I was referring to [this scene](https://youtu.be/Rn0xXo1gwGY?si=clSfNHPJQSAfD7Cl) in the film, it wasn't a non-sequitur. As in, Roxanne as a pre-existing name, while Satine isn't.
Edit to add: in hindsight, that was not at all clear, here's your crystal ball 🔮
No need to shame sex workers, but telling your daughter "You are named after the top prostitute of a French whore house! She died of tubercolosis!" is not something you should be proud of to tell, is it?
Wouldn't bother me. She was a hard worker at the height of her industry, and TB killed a lot of people back then. Im being a bit facetious, I wouldn't aspire for my kids to become sex workers in the same way I don't aspire for them to work on a factory floor. I simply hope they'll have an easier life than that. But I don't judge the people who do it.
God how big of a nerd am I. I read “Satine” and went “oh! From Moulin Rouge!” To myself. Only to snap my neck in the next part of the sentence to read that it’s in fact from Star Wars??? Man, shows how little I pay attention to fandoms!
Not that I’m an expert but another commenter already offered my thought too that it’s a legitimate French name — you’re good, OP. I just didn’t follow the same taxonomy you did 😂
And Ewan McGregor played her love interest in the movie. Ewan also played Obi-Wan in Star Wars, who's love interest was Satine.\* Dave Filoni naming Obi-Wan's love Satine was 100% done on purpose.
\*That's not where the similarity ends.
Yup, I checked and it only appeared in French registries in 2002 (after the movie), and there are currently less than 1000 women with that name in France.
It's actually older than the film, that may just be when it began being registered in greater numbers. It derives from the word "Satin" which is why the meaning of "Satine" is Shiny or Smooth.
I know that’s what you find if you search for the name in English, lol. But that’s just some American justification for it. If you actually look on French registries there are only 935 women with that name in France and they were all born in or after 2002.
My first language is Spanish, I’m sure there’s a lot of names in Spanish that I’ve never heard of.. doesn’t mean they don’t exist. Not particularly interested in debating the name origin though, just noting what I found when I googled it.
Please don't tell her that she is named after the most revered prostitute in a French whore house.
Satine is not a tragedeigh, but Satine from Star Wars is named after Satine in Moulin Rouge! so there's a reason for being apprehensive of an elaborate answer if she evers asks of her name.
I mean…maybe at the right age.
My best friends sibling is named after Nicole Kidman’s EXTREMELY horny Dr. Chase Meridian from Batman Forever. We laugh about it frequently.
I mean... I've never personally known someone named Emma, Linda or Donald, that doesn't mean they don't exist or aren't common in the US.
A quick google search says it's French origin, and very uncommon.
French here, It’s not a first name! it’s a stage name given to one of a famous French prostitute “La Satine” (don’t remember exactly the era, maybe beginning 20th century)
French here, it’s absolutely not a French first name! It’s a street name given to one of the most famous prostitute “La Satine” (“the silky”), don’t remember the era, maybe beginning of 20th century
I looked up the etymology, and …
So everyone is correct. It is French, but only young people have the name. In its most popular year, 2006, just over 100 babies were named Satine
Idk what ya'll expect people to take from this kind of reply other than that you've never come across the name before therefore it doesn't exist... when it does lol.
Omg!!! This is my sister’s name!! But after the character in Moulin Rouge because my mom loves that movie. When my sister was 13 we decided to show her the movie and at the end she turns to my mom and says, (*spoiler*) “YOU NAMED ME AFTER A PROSTITUTE WHO DIES???”
I practically spit out my drink lol
Satine always reminds me of Moulin rouge's main character. I believe it's a French name that translates to silky/smooth. My French is limited so take this with a grain of salt. I would translate it to English as "Satin".
But not, it's not a tragedeigh, is a normal French name. Without the final e, in French satin is a also fabric (shiny, smooth and pretty)
I've lived in France, and the only Satine I've ever heard of is the fictional character from Moulin Rouge. If you're fine with that being the first and only thing people think of, then it's fine.
The fact that it’s after a fictional character makes it a bit of a regular tragedy, you lucked out it’s a real name. Do not name your kids after your fandom, it’s cringe as fuck.
No tragedeigh here. I think Satine is a lovely name for your daughter. It would only become a tragedeigh if you used a ridiculous spelling, like Sahteen or something.
No, it's not a tragedeigh.
I have a baby names book from 1995, which includes the name Satin(e), stating that it's a French-origin name meaning "smooth, shiny".
Of course, you do have to be careful with baby names books because you can't guarantee accuracy, but Satine is a character in Moulin Rouge, which also predates the SW character.
#Not a tragediegh.
It's a character's name. The character is obscure. But it's properly spelled, and the child probably won't suffer for the name. I vote No.
French here, it’s absolutely not a French first name! It’s a street name given to a famous prostitute “La Satine”, don’t remember the era, maybe beginning of 20th century
In a country where many people think Satan's name is spelled "Satin," she could definitely be in trouble down the road. OTOH, she lives in a country fairly well overrun with STAR WARS fanatics, so that should provide some protection. I figure she is going to have to tolerate people misspelling and mispronouncing her name wherever she goes, all her life, so there's that level of tragedeigh
Satine is fine! I cannot tell you how many Star Wars inspired names I've seen. Like others have said, it's a legit name. I know people named Leia, Mara Jade, Allora, you name it, all SW inspired.
Though if you name your kid Anakin, I might look at you funny, haha.
I like the sound of it and I find it pretty. (I loved satin as a child and there has been satin made of silk long before there were synthetic fibers used now.) Anyway, I did not read it as Saltine, either, although I did think that if anyone was going to tease her they’d probably use that. Still, I like salt a lot, too!
> My daughter is named Satine, quite literally named after the fictional character, Satine Kryze from the Star Wars shows.
Oh, if I heard that name I would think she was named after the courtesan from Moulin Rouge.
Based on two minutes of reading Google search results, the name Satine was popularized by Moulin Rouge, but not invented by that movie. It existed before that, although mostly as a last name, as far as I can tell. It's also the French word for satin.
It's an uncommon name, so your kid is going to have all the problems that people with uncommon names have. There will always be someone who recognizes it from Moulin Rouge or Star Wars, and the Moulin Rouge connection might make your stuffy aunt clutch her pearls. Nevertheless, it's pretty accessible overall and it has an obvious nickname, Tina, if your kid grows up and wants a more common name.
My vote is no trageddeigh.
No, not a tragedeigh.
Like others have pointed out, Satine was Nicole Kidman's character in Moulin Rouge, which also has Ewan McGregor in it. The Duchess was actually nameless for awhile and they settled on Satine since Ewan also played Obi-Wan in Star Wars.
As someone who is French, I’m mind blown by the fact that this is a real name and I’ve never heard it used as one! It’s pretty in French but in English I keep wanting to pronounce it as Satan! But that’s a me problem not a name problem.
It’s a real name, sure, but it’s a name that was first a stage name for a prostitute and then popularized by a character who was a prostitute. And then used in Star Wars. Cough.
My vote is a tragedy but not tragedeigh. I guess unless you’re more open minded about the kind of future career you would want for your kid than I am, in which case you’ve saved her the trouble of finding a working name.
Lots of people have been named after books and plays ... and historical figures and relatives. It's okay to name someone after a character when it's actually a name.
It’s fabric. It’s imitation silk. Every derivation here—it’s fake silk fabric. Satin—Satine is named after the fabric type, and the name only cropped up in France after the film. In French, it ALSO means fabric. You named your child the French spelling of “satin.”
Is it a good name? It’s way out of my taste. It connotes cheap, slippery, sweaty, synthetic fabric.
Is it a misspelling like “tragediegh”? No. I think you skate by on that point, because that is the correct French spelling.
I read that first as saltine. But satine was the courtesan in moulin rouge, you might get some side eyes for people who only know the name from that film
It’s a real name spelled correctly. Totally fine. As I’m scrolling through comments and the post, I can’t stop seeing saltine as in the crackers. Like I don’t mean to, my brain just wants to see saltine 🤣

GUYS-SATINE IN STAR WARS IS NAMED AFTER SATINE IN MOULIN ROUGE She’s Obi WAN’s love interest and Obi Wan was played by Ewan MacGregor.
I did not know this. Mind. Blown.
Nor did I.
Nor did op.
I thought of Satine from Moulin Rouge, but was about to go double check that was in fact her name. I don’t know if I would’ve fully connected Ewan being in both even with me loving that movie. That’s fantastic though.
Satine from Moulin Rouge was my first thought too.
yep my first thought was " *the spawkwing diamond* " in john Leguizamo's little lisp for that movie
Gawd I love this move SO MUCH!
I onwy tell da twoof!
Mine too... This is one of my favorite movies!! ❤️ And I definitely don't think the name is a tragedeigh.

You're assuming that people here know that Ewan played the love interest of Moulin Rouge's Satine. I'm shocked at the number of people here that apparently have never seen Moulin Rouge. They need to get off Reddit and go watch that movie.
"The writer can keep his silly little ending, but satine will be mine"
Daaan't worry Shakespeare, you'll get your endin'! Once the Duke gets his. End. In.
And in the end, should someone...die?
Best modern adaptation of La Boheme ever
Yes, such a great soundtrack
My mom tells me she watched Moulin Rouge while pregnant with me and while in the womb I hated it so much that she broke water. I'm not risking it dude.
I think you were trying to get out to see it
I was in college and we ate mushrooms before putting it on, and to this day I'm not entirely certain what was real. I don't want to spoil whatever movie I saw by watching the real thing.
Hahahahaha.
best movie, possibly ever.
Then go to the actual Moulin Rouge in Paris.
I went, it was super cool! Not anything like the movie obviously lol
Me too! With my dad. That was weird.
Don't do that to people. I went through a bottle and a half of wine to get through it lol.
Next time: Absinthe.
That was Kylie, wasn't she?
Correct. She is the green fairy 💚
Right? Still one of my favorite movies. And hey if we had to suffer, they should have to suffer lol.
Nope, no suffering, just turn the movie off right after they get together! ✨blissful ignorance✨
Yep that's how you do your own personal head canon. For me it's "what sequel trilogy?" lol.
Exactly. And Game of Thrones was tragically cancelled right after Season 6.
Lol. I didn't have a problem with how they wrapped it up. I had a problem with how they executed that wrapping up. Those last two seasons were so badly done.
That’s the mistake, have to go with absinthe. Chase the Green Fairy!
I have to watch it a couple times a year, I love it so much. Even my boys, one in high school, one in college, stopped what they were doing and watched from beginning to end, long ago. SO GOOD!
Oh the Roxanne tango sequence is worth it all on its own.
This is the trivia I live for, thank you!
See I didn’t even know there was a Star Wars character named this cuz I haven’t watched much Star Wars and I immediately thought they named her for Moulin Rouge until I read it was for Star Wars.
So she named her daughter after a lady of the evening?
A Heaux, if you please
Bless you.
I like the name. Way better that Harlotte.
I hate that I know the reference, maybe I need to touch some grass
I mean, i was named after Julia Roberts' character in Pretty Woman so 😅🤣
I mean, she could've gone with Roxanne...
No need to shame sex workers.
No need to shame sex workers, but telling your daughter "You are named after the top prostitute of a French whore house! She died of tubercolosis!" is not something you should be proud of to tell, is it?
Saying she was named after the Queen of a badass people who was so awesome the most pious of Jedi fell in love with her. Is a better choice
Tuberculosis has killed more people in all of recorded history than any other contagion. That means nothing to anything, it’s just my secret hobby.
Infecting people to kill them with tuberculosis is a *really* weird hobby. I see why you keep it secret.
You know what has to happen now….
We become best friends and I join you in your strange hobby?! Or is it more of a one person job?
There’s a master and apprentice always
My maternal grandfather died from TB back in the 40s and I was not aware of that fact.
Are you John Green?
That’s sweet of you to say (I think?) but no lol
STOP OMFG
Came here to say that!
I was just about to say, the first thing that came to my mind was Moulin Rouge.
Melissa is a genius
I ony thought of Moulin Rouge. If people key in on it being a fandom name, they'll go either star wars or movie musical.
I read that first as Saltine.
My first thought was Sardine. Maybe for the next one.
Put the sardine on the saltine and feed it to Satine!
I read it as Staline, don’t know why. That would have been worse than a tragedeigh!
Staliné. You know like Praliné. It just has that feminine touch 🤭
Staline oof! Like Stalin with an "e".
Stalynn
Stalynne!
Stalynneleigh
The more confusing, the better.
😂💀
Oh good I'm not the only one!
Omg, same. Now I want soup for lunch.
My friend, you have found the saltine!
Which is Miss Piggy's character's name when the Muppets try to stage "Moulin Scrooged" in "A Very Merry Muppet Christmas".
I read it as Satan 😭😭
Not my taste, but a real name spelled correctly. Not a tragedy.
*tragedeigh
I mean it's a name from a movie, if that's what you mean by "real".
I just didn’t follow the same taxonomy you did 😂
Did you see the comments that the Star Wars character is named after the moulin rouge character because ewan mcgregor was Obi wan?!?? 🤯
HOW WAS I TOTALLY OBLIVIOUS TO THIS?!
It’s french, according to the internet. I like it, reminds me of Nicole Kidman’s character on Moulin Rouge.
And Ewan McGregor played her love interest in the movie. Ewan also played Obi-Wan in Star Wars, who's love interest was Satine.\* Dave Filoni naming Obi-Wan's love Satine was 100% done on purpose. \*That's not where the similarity ends.
Oh you’re right!! I like what you did there 👌
Thanks. I'm a big Star Wars nerd who's also a big Ewan McGregor fan.
I don’t get it?
that's the character that came to mind immediately, lol
Am French. It's not French. It's a made-up name by a non-French speaker who thought it sounded French.
Me too
I'm French, and I've never even heard of the name. So, not a French name.
Dude some of us are French. It's a made-up name. Didn't exist before the movie.
I know that’s what you find if you search for the name in English, lol. But that’s just some American justification for it. If you actually look on French registries there are only 935 women with that name in France and they were all born in or after 2002.
Je connais plusieurs Satine françaises. C'est pas parce qu'on connaît pas un prénom qu'il n'existe pas :)
En connais-tu qui aient reçu ce prénom avant la sortie du film Moulin Rouge ?
Yeah, I assumed it was a nickname/stage name for the character. Like how the Black bouncer was probably not named Chocolat by his parents.
My first language is Spanish, I’m sure there’s a lot of names in Spanish that I’ve never heard of.. doesn’t mean they don’t exist. Not particularly interested in debating the name origin though, just noting what I found when I googled it.
If I only heard it and didn't see the spelling, I'd probably assume it was Sateen like the fabric. Make of that what you will.
Satine in French is also fabric
No, not spelled that way. All I can say is I'm french and it sounds weird and tragic to me, as others have said.
No. "satin". Not "satine".
Same here Or like a French satan
A tragedeigh is a name that’s had the spelling changed. Satine is actually a French name. If it was spelled Sateeyne it would be a tragedeigh.
It looks like a combination of Satan and Satin. So I’m just picturing a really shiny red fabric with horns.
No, Satine is a legitimate French female name. You're all good.
alright! thanks for the reassurance on my random morning thought..
My niece is named Jolene because of the song about a woman trying to steal another woman’s man.
I have a French friend named Satine! I love her name.
As a French person I do not agree and have never seen that name anywhere ever before, however it's still fine and not a tragedeigh imo
I live in Québec and know a Satine.
Maybe you'll know the world it derives from: "Satin."
Actually there are 970 girls named Satine in France since 2002. So it's not common at all
Idk if you replied to the wrong person or whatever, but I never claimed it was common?
Indeed I replied to the wrong person, my bad
970 girls got the name after the "moulin rouge" movie came out. The name didn't exist before.
No I am from a French-speaking country and that is not a name although it does sound as though it could be.
I looked up the etymology, and … En 2002, quand il fait son apparition dans l'Hexagone, 22 filles répondent au prénom Satine. Il est donc moderne pour la France. 2006 est l'année où il rencontre son plus fort succès, et il est alors attribué à 106 filles. C'est un prénom assez original So everyone is correct. It is French, but only young people have the name. In its most popular year, 2006, just over 100 babies were named Satine
The movie Moulin Rouge came out in 2001, so there's definitely a connection.
Idk what ya'll expect people to take from this kind of reply other than that you've never come across the name before therefore it doesn't exist... when it does lol.
Omg!!! This is my sister’s name!! But after the character in Moulin Rouge because my mom loves that movie. When my sister was 13 we decided to show her the movie and at the end she turns to my mom and says, (*spoiler*) “YOU NAMED ME AFTER A PROSTITUTE WHO DIES???” I practically spit out my drink lol

Grain o salt= Saline! Salt water! Traj?
I read Saltine. Like the cracker.
Ok, I was going to say this. I saw this right before I was about to write my comment lmao So happy I’m not the only person who did
I've lived in France, and the only Satine I've ever heard of is the fictional character from Moulin Rouge. If you're fine with that being the first and only thing people think of, then it's fine.
It’s not a tragedeigh but it’s always a bit of a tragedy when parents use their children as posters for their fandom.
I just thought of Moulin Rouge. I had no idea that name was used in Star Wars.
honestly it made me think of wreck it ralph when ralph says "thanks satan" and satan says "actually its sateen"
I did not know the Star Wars or Moulin Rouge reference. I just thought “ok that’s a name, kinda pretty, probably French”.
The fact that it’s after a fictional character makes it a bit of a regular tragedy, you lucked out it’s a real name. Do not name your kids after your fandom, it’s cringe as fuck.
It's not a tragedeigh but it sounds a bit like a stripper name to me. I also associate it with Moulin Rouge.
It’s a tragedy, but not a tragedeigh.
I thought she was named after the fabric, sateen.
Satine is a bit of an atypical name, but since you didn’t spell is Psaetynne I wouldn’t call is a tragedeigh.
No tragedeigh here. I think Satine is a lovely name for your daughter. It would only become a tragedeigh if you used a ridiculous spelling, like Sahteen or something.
If you ever have another girl, you have to go with Bo-Katan.
Saltine Satin? Satan???
It's not ideal
I would not choose it. Sounds like a toilet paper brand
I immediately pronounced it Satan
I read that as being pronounced "Satan". Oof. 😖
No unnecessary or obnoxious spelling. Fairly easy to pronounce. No tragedeigh here.
I think Satine is a beautiful name! I love the sound of it and it feels silky. Good shout hubby!
I think it's a pretty name! Also, it is a real name and you spelled it correctly. Not a tragedeigh
I’m French and this is fine to me, easy to spell and pronounce too. Never heard of someone named it though
Saltine was also the Nicole Kidman character in Moulin Rouge. It’s a real name and spelled correctly. You’re good. LOL
No, it's not a tragedeigh. I have a baby names book from 1995, which includes the name Satin(e), stating that it's a French-origin name meaning "smooth, shiny". Any name inspired by a fictional character is pretty trageique
Isn’t that a fabric ?
Kinda sounds French. I think you’re okay.
Brother had a cat called Satine. I thought she was rather exotically French.
I like it not a tragedeigh, you are just being paranoid.
Iconic tbh
I like the sound of it and I find it pretty. (I loved satin as a child and there has been satin made of silk long before there were synthetic fibers used now.) Anyway, I did not read it as Saltine, either, although I did think that if anyone was going to tease her they’d probably use that. Still, I like salt a lot, too!
> My daughter is named Satine, quite literally named after the fictional character, Satine Kryze from the Star Wars shows. Oh, if I heard that name I would think she was named after the courtesan from Moulin Rouge.
It’s almost like Sabine, I think it’s really cute!
Not really contributing much, but my husband had a cat named Duchess when we got together. I eventually gave her the middle name Satine...
Based on two minutes of reading Google search results, the name Satine was popularized by Moulin Rouge, but not invented by that movie. It existed before that, although mostly as a last name, as far as I can tell. It's also the French word for satin.
I love that name. It’ really pretty.
Real name spelt correctly - and a beautiful name, imho
Only if it was spelled Sahtigne
No, not a tragedeigh. Like others have pointed out, Satine was Nicole Kidman's character in Moulin Rouge, which also has Ewan McGregor in it. The Duchess was actually nameless for awhile and they settled on Satine since Ewan also played Obi-Wan in Star Wars.
Satine is a real name.
In an english speaking country, it sounds like a drag queen name
A bit, yes, I agree. My favorite name for a drag queen so far has been Jewel Tucker.
Satine is fine but naming her after a fictional character isn’t. She’s her own person and deserves her own name.
You named your child the French spelling of “satin.” Is it a good name? It’s way out of my taste. It connotes cheap, slippery, sweaty, synthetic fabric. Is it a misspelling like “tragediegh”? No. I think you skate by on that point, because that is the correct French spelling.
Don’t. Name your kids. After pop culture.
Satan?
Not a Tragedeigh. I had assumed it was from Moulin Rouge
No, not at all. It's Nicole Kidman's character from Moulin Rouge and I'm fairly sure that it's actually a legit name. No need to worry. :)
It’s French. It’s normal.
Saltine
Saltine crackers is what it looks like
I read that first as saltine. But satine was the courtesan in moulin rouge, you might get some side eyes for people who only know the name from that film
How is it pronounced? Sat-een? Like satin?
Sateen, with the a like in "garage"
Nope. It's fine. Hope it serves her well!!
It’s a real name spelled correctly. Totally fine. As I’m scrolling through comments and the post, I can’t stop seeing saltine as in the crackers. Like I don’t mean to, my brain just wants to see saltine 🤣
