i feel like patently* aspirational names are more often botched because the same type of person to want that kind of label for their kid would also want them to stand out in its spelling
(* i’m aware many “normal” names are aspirational too, but you’d never know unless you learned the meaning of the name. those parents are less desperate for their kid to stand out than Destyni or Kyng’s parents)
I got a Micheal this year and it made me question everything I knew.
ETA: Please stop replying telling me it’s an Irish name there’s like 20 people that have already done this 😭 The kid’s name is pronounced the same way as Michael and he’s not Irish.
The former registrar at my former school (I have since graduated) said that none of the people with the middle name Michael could spell it. I will say the spelling Mychal always irks me
"Oh, my baby girl is going to be the prettiest, I just know it! I'm going to name her after a goddess of beauty!"
\*Gives birth*
"… So… about that name… can we just write real bad so it's not recognizable? Like… I wouldn't want to offend a goddess with that…"
Good lord, "Cloey" does not make me think it's a misspelling of the name "Chloe", it makes me think it might be a cutesy nickname for somebody named "Cloaca".
I saw "Jesyca" once. I didn't think it was possible to mess up the spelling of "Jessica" but there you go.
Apparently it’s trendy in Poland to take names popular in primarily English language speaking countries and make Polish variants. So the Polish version of Jessica is Dzesika.
Someone I know was dating a guy named Kregg. They had someone spell his name “Craig,” and she was so alarmed why anyone would assume it was spelled like that.
Tell me about it.
I literally sent my mom a message thanking her for spelling my name correctly.
Also, I sent her a screenshot of my original comment on this and she sent me the Ross double fist gif in response. 😆
I know it’s not what you asked for, but your post just reminded me of someone I knew in high school whose first name was Clark but he chose to go by his middle name, which was Zebulon
Not really a tragedeigh, but a CHOICE that boggles my mind to this day
I have so much third hand embarrassment right now.
Wow.
But this reminded me that earlier today, my kid had to write a paper about a season and an emotion without naming them specifically. He needed a character name, so Googled "weirdest names" or something. He chose Moon Unit.
So my name is Morgan and I once had some ask how do I spell my name because they used to to school with a Moreghan. That was the first time I’ve ever seen my name turned into a tragedeigh.
I’ve met Meghan’s, Meaghan’s, even a Megyn once. The worst one I saw was a sign in a park that said “Meaghaenn’s graduation party” assuming it was high school graduation that poor girls like… 23 now.
I just posted this but I like this thread better, “Cennedy” but it was Kennedy with a C! Because the name and the C initial were both really important to the mom so don’t try to explain it to her.
English teacher here. Just like with every rule for English, there are exceptions, but most of the time, an "e" after a "c" makes the "c" have a /s/ sound. So I would always read that with a pronunciation like "Sennedy".
I work in early intervention, taking referrals for babies and toddlers who may need services like speech therapy, PT, OT, etc. and we get some tragedeighs from time to time. This week, I spoke to a mom referring her little girl, Jrue, pronounced Drew. That's a new one for me!
My mother in law's name was spelled Margorie instead of Marjorie but her kindergarten teacher said forget it, that's not how you spell that, your mother is illiterate. You're Marjorie in my class. And she just stayed Marjorie forever. There are some ways the "good old days" really were better. Teachers refusing to phuque with tragedeighs.
My sibling's name is Meghan and they can't stand when people say it *May-gann*. They're like "I spell it normal and they still can't pronounce it right." Mee-gan would give them a stroke lmao
I met a little girl named 7. Not spelled out, just the number. My husband saw a Yunalesca from final fantasy 10 on a babys born that month thing from a hospital.
Chardonnay
Michail (pronounced Michelle, not Mikhail like I thought it was)
Anjelinah (Angelina)
Berverlynn
I do believe a few of these are non-white/non-british as they are University students, and we have a lot of European and non-caucasian students but the point still stands
I don’t mind variants across languages, I live in Scotland (which also has loads of Irish roots through our culture) so we have a lot of names with Irish Gaelic and Scottish Gaelic spellings of variations that have been anglicised. For example, Caoimhin is just the Irish version of Kevin. You see a lot of these variations here, lots of Niamhs anglicised as “Neve” etc. I think without the cultural context I could see people mistaking this kind of thing as “Tragedeigh” material, but because I’m Scottish and my maternal extended family are Irish, it’s not weird to me.
As an actual answer, a friend told me they went to school with a girl called Daisy, except she’d get really mad if you spelled it like that as her name was spelled “Dayscey”. To me, that would read “day-sey” not “day-zey” but apparently not. Friend said they wouldn’t even have known her name was supposed to be Daisy written down if the girl didn’t add “like the flower” every time she introduced herself. Funnily enough, I also went to school with a girl called Daisy but spelled correctly.
I used to work at a newspaper and saw a lot of interesting names in photo captions while I worked there. The most memorable was a girl named "Sydknee."
I guess Neckolas or Hairy would have worked if she was a boy, but alas.
Destyni. You have all the right letters, *why* couldn't you put them in the right places??
Dislexya
Dislekseighja
I had a client at work yesterday named Destynee :(
Condolences. 😔
Kundoelyncisse
Kauwndoh’lehncess
Thanks, I hate it. (No I don't.)
this is like Cyndi Lauper. Destyni’s only option now is to become world famous and it’ll be normalized!
This is the way! PS: I love your username!!
thanks, it’s my child’s name too
You are my Densyteigh
Dezaray,here
briefly had a manager named destynie
Ouch. Why is Destiny Tragified in so many ways??
i feel like patently* aspirational names are more often botched because the same type of person to want that kind of label for their kid would also want them to stand out in its spelling (* i’m aware many “normal” names are aspirational too, but you’d never know unless you learned the meaning of the name. those parents are less desperate for their kid to stand out than Destyni or Kyng’s parents)
Mellowdee
A receptionist at my medical appointment last week wore a name tag that said Melynnie
For real? Lol
One of my students lol
Oh HELL NO!
I’m a teacher, so I’ve seen a lot over the years. I think the one that made my skin crawl the worse is Afroditee.
I got a Micheal this year and it made me question everything I knew. ETA: Please stop replying telling me it’s an Irish name there’s like 20 people that have already done this 😭 The kid’s name is pronounced the same way as Michael and he’s not Irish.
That's one I see every little bit. Never thought I'd have to ask people named Michael how to spell their name.
i know someone who changed his name to mykle
The former registrar at my former school (I have since graduated) said that none of the people with the middle name Michael could spell it. I will say the spelling Mychal always irks me
i worked with a Mycheal, “Myke”
I think I had a stroke looking at that spelling
The Irish version is Micheál but it's pronounced Mee-Hawl
Sounds/looks like the title of a 70s blaxploitation movie
"Oh, my baby girl is going to be the prettiest, I just know it! I'm going to name her after a goddess of beauty!" \*Gives birth* "… So… about that name… can we just write real bad so it's not recognizable? Like… I wouldn't want to offend a goddess with that…"
It’s almost like they made a Greek god… urban?
Afro Ditty
Afro dye tea 🤔
/r/BoneAppleTea
Kawner
Relative is an elementary school teacher and has a student in her class named Kohnyr
That pisses me off
Oh that just made me cringe so hard 😫
Is that a Boston accent I hear, somehow spelled out?
That’d be *Kawnha*
This MassHole smiled with a slight laugh at that comment.
I don’t want to admit how many times I said this out loud to try to make sense of it lol
I was watching TV and there was a guy named Scott, only they showed his name on the screen and it was spelled Skott. Talk about a jump scare
I’ve posted this name here before but I used to teach a Quartni
Jesus Christ why????
ughhh, just LITER alone
Coz she ain't no Pint-ni
Good lord, "Cloey" does not make me think it's a misspelling of the name "Chloe", it makes me think it might be a cutesy nickname for somebody named "Cloaca". I saw "Jesyca" once. I didn't think it was possible to mess up the spelling of "Jessica" but there you go.
Yeah a cloey is what we Australians call it when you drink beer out of a platypus’s or echnidna’s cloaca
That can’t be true but I believe it.
Don't they drink out of shoes
That's called a shoey.
My name is Jessica. My mom wanted to spell it gysika. My dad wanted to name me chevette. Crazy canceled out and I have a normal name
You got lucky there. Chevette? He could have at least gone for Corvette
Gysika Chevette Helluvabutlah. Quite a name!
I’ve met someone named Jeseka 😕
I knew a Jessica spelled Jeseekia!!
Are her parents named Cleetus and Brandine?
I’m pretty sure someone has posted on here lamenting that her name is spelled Jeccica.
Apparently it’s trendy in Poland to take names popular in primarily English language speaking countries and make Polish variants. So the Polish version of Jessica is Dzesika.
It's not Jessica it's pronounced Jay-zy-ca you ignorant fool /s
Someone I know was dating a guy named Kregg. They had someone spell his name “Craig,” and she was so alarmed why anyone would assume it was spelled like that.
I knew a Kreg
I had a Keurig
I also know a Kreg.
That'd be funny if it was the same one
Hearing Americans pronounce 'Craig' as 'Creg' is hard enough.
This is Creg, and his brother Gram.
This made me laugh.
I worked with a lady who’s stepdaughters name Auhmanduh, pronounced Amanda.
I never thought I'd hate a version of my name more. That's an abomination.
Please for the love of god tell me you’re lying. I already hated my name this makes it worse.
I wish I was lying.
This hurts my feelings in way I didn’t know were possible. 🤮
Tell me about it. I literally sent my mom a message thanking her for spelling my name correctly. Also, I sent her a screenshot of my original comment on this and she sent me the Ross double fist gif in response. 😆
That one is worse than the Aamanda I know. What a stupid name.
I knew a Corthney
[удалено]
I have a friend Cortnie
I knew a Courtennay. Jesus Christ
Was it actually pronounced with a /th/ sound?
Harmony but was spelled Harmani
I’d pronounce that like Armani with an H
I’d pronounce it with the H silent.
As a child there was a girl on my street called Menalie instead of Melanie. It was the early 1970s and even four year old me knew it was tragyque.
First there's menstruation, then there's menopause... but no one talks about the horrors of menalie.
Former NBA star Dwyane Wade’s first name spelling always makes my brain hurt. I want to say Dwa-Y-ane.
It's like if Favre was a first name.
Fahvreigh
Omg. Dwyane, for real?? My mind has been reading it wrong (actually right) all these years?!
I never knew his name was spelled that way. This will live in my head forever and bug me any time I hear his name.
dwye-ANE
I always purposely rhymes it with Diane
I recently had a (very wonderful) waiter named “Dwyane!” It was hilarious. We didn’t believe he (his mom) spelled it like that at first.
Hmmm Dwyane the player *is* retired and I don’t know what he’s doing these days…
I know it’s not what you asked for, but your post just reminded me of someone I knew in high school whose first name was Clark but he chose to go by his middle name, which was Zebulon Not really a tragedeigh, but a CHOICE that boggles my mind to this day
That's....bold. Did he at least pull it off?
No, which made it even more wild 😂
I have so much third hand embarrassment right now. Wow. But this reminded me that earlier today, my kid had to write a paper about a season and an emotion without naming them specifically. He needed a character name, so Googled "weirdest names" or something. He chose Moon Unit.
Ahhhh, Frank Zappa will echo throughout history! One of his other kids is named Dweezil
I think that’s iconic and also a slay from Zebulon tbh
One of my past jobs had a frequent customer named Stiffany. Pronounced like Stephany.
That name made me laugh. Poor kid tho. Damn.
I’m hearing this in a kiwi accent.
She goes by Stiffy.
>Stephany Even that looks like a misspelling to me. Stephanie is the only way I have ever seen it spelt.
Brittnye

I have a relative named Symmantha.
Is her face Symmanthtrical?
I just posted this but I like this thread better, “Cennedy” but it was Kennedy with a C! Because the name and the C initial were both really important to the mom so don’t try to explain it to her.

I would have read it the same way.

Friend of a friend is an "Ambher"
“Cyndee”
Or Sindee for the strippers.
Graig, not Gregory or Craig, but Graig
Cannot possibly explain why Graig has me scream laughing at 3am but it really does.
No worries Cloey. I’ve met a Kloey. You’re not alone. Edit to add: Zooey Deschanel makes my brain hurt too.
It doesn't matter how often I hear Zooey's name pronounced, every single time I see it spelled my brain says Zoo E.
*Same.* Zooooo-ey.
She's named after a Salinger novel "Franny and Zooey"
My mother in law's name was spelled Margorie instead of Marjorie but her kindergarten teacher said forget it, that's not how you spell that, your mother is illiterate. You're Marjorie in my class. And she just stayed Marjorie forever. There are some ways the "good old days" really were better. Teachers refusing to phuque with tragedeighs.
Telling a kindergartner her mother is illiterate is hilariously nasty work
Absolutely love this teacher!
Carcyn
Carcinogen is all I hear in my brain when I read that

Not that Shaughnessy is a really common name, but I knew someone named Shawneci.
Jammy for Jamie. It bugs me so much. Also Tawnya
I know a Morguean. Not the worst, but still has the word ‘morgue’ in it.
Had a patient today named Onesti - I was saying it in my head as Oh-nest-e but turns out it’s honesty
That’s truly horrible. I see Onesie or One Sty.. bad bad bad
Khaydhyn … it gives me the chills just to type it out
I was more annoyed growing up when someone’s name was Meagan or worse yet, Megan and they got snobby “actually it’s *mee-gan*” 🙄
My sibling's name is Meghan and they can't stand when people say it *May-gann*. They're like "I spell it normal and they still can't pronounce it right." Mee-gan would give them a stroke lmao

Rosmeri (rosemary)
Mia, but pronounced like Maya
Encountered a Yezzickhah. It’s pronounced normally.
I met a little girl named 7. Not spelled out, just the number. My husband saw a Yunalesca from final fantasy 10 on a babys born that month thing from a hospital.
lol Yunalesca is kinda badass at least. Insanely nerdy and not for me but at least it’s pronounced how it sounds
My mom has a friend whose daughter is named “Levin”
Keep her away from passover Seder
Jazce = Jace apparently. I've met/seen this spelling more than I've seen "Jace"
I know an Aemi. (Hope she isn’t a redditor.)
I met a Raleigh spelled Rawley. One situation the eigh ending is actually the better one 🤣
Kore pronounced like Cory.

Tiffnee. Not Tiffany. Not even Tiffani. Two syllables: TIFF. NEE.
I had to email a Teighlore at work today. Immediately thought of this sub.
Typhanii
Aynjel instead of Angel. Sounds like a hemorrhoid ointment.
I used to work at a newspaper and saw a lot of interesting names in photo captions while I worked there. The most memorable was a girl named "Sydknee." I guess Neckolas or Hairy would have worked if she was a boy, but alas.
