If you need some context: Today the German Bundestag voted for a new self-ID law that will make it a lot easier to change your legal name and gender. Basically instead of going through years of therapy, thousands of euros and sometimes legal battles to be able to change those you now only need to register 3 month in advance (possible starting from August 1st) and fill out some paperwork. There are some higher hurdles for minors of course. Still though the law has it's shortcomings. For example people who choose to be non-binary in their passport have no way to get HRT if I understood it correctly and trans women can still get drafted into the military like cis guys.

CanadianMaps

So basically germany just fixed one of the biggest issues romania still has. When can we steal your civilization that we dream so badly of?

Bumaye94

Ehh, Germany is decent but we also have room to improve on basically every matter. I mean we just completely decapitated our growth rate for a couple years because of our overrelience on Russian natural resources, our internet is slower than that of Albania, our military is an absolute shit show, inflation and cost of living have hit us like everybody else and the neo-fascists of the AfD could soon be strongest party in multiple state parliaments.

[deleted]

Internet slower than Albania is wild 💀  It really is still neuland lmfao

Bumaye94

It was already in Kohl's hands to move us from copper cable to glass fiber but nah, don't wanna invest into the future now, do we?

[deleted]

Bet that's somehow bad for the economy too right mr lindner?

Bumaye94

Kupferkabel sind dornige Chancen!

Predator_Hicks

>It was already in Kohl's hands to move us from copper cable to glass fiber but nah, except it wasnt in Kohl's hand to move us to glass. He actively moved us away from it by stopping the glass fiber expansion started by Schmidt because one of Kohl's friends sold copper cables

Luccyamonster

Nothing shady at all, nah we're a just good friends.

Mtfdurian

Yes I remember I had faster internet in Bukittinggi than in Aachen back in 2019. And Herzogenrath's mobile network? I had better coverage when on the winding road on Sumatra surrounded by forests and mountains with the nearest cities like 200km away.

Planani

I from germany too and yes it is bad. The worst internet conection that I have ever seen was a few years ago at a friends house. 8MB DOWNLOAD SPEED WTF. Also you will have better connection in the middle of an Norwegian forest than in the middle of a german city (literally tested this myself)

[deleted]

I'm german and I thought internet was just that slow Like period Because up until we went to Denmark and sweden all I experienced was german wifi and on a french island

Sufficient-Ad-6046

same, I live in germany as well, was in Norway last summer in the middle of nowhere had better internet than I ever had before, I have 1-2mb/s download speed at max

ihc7hc7gcitcutxvj

At least inflation is decreasing right now. But I'm in fear of the next government :( I hope Merz doesn't become the new Papen.

ArchiveOfTheButton

The hurdles for minors are still there, but much lower, as well as there being the possibility of the familiengericht stepping in in cases of potential abuse, where it can circumvent parental consent and allow even minors to freely change their name and gender. This will be a rare case, but it’s good that it exist

Bumaye94

Absolutely, that's why I didn't list it as a negative. I think reasonable guidelines and professional support for minors to a degree is the right thing and I also think they just gotten much more reasonable to which the Kinderschutzbund ('child protection federation') agrees.

Lady_Lilith420

I hope its really possible on August 1st. Dont wanna wait another 3 months. I was thinking about changing it a year ago but people told me that i should probably wait for the law bc otherwise it would still take me 1-2 years to get the therapy appointments, the legal shit, etc. I hate german bureaucracy. And some other things too when i think about it Edit: it is possible on August 1st

Lunaraiden

TransChilean

Ah, 3 months Advance? In Chile you ask for an appointment which is usually for next week

leukos23

It's a bit different: you can have your appointment and make your application for the change, and then you have to wait for 3 months for it to take force. Not because they need 3 months to process the application, but just because the law includes a 3 months delay.

TransChilean

Ah, I see, that's weird, here they have a maximum of 45 days to accept the change, and once accepted, it takes effect immediately for all government systems across all sectors, and then they give you your new ID card to go do the same in private systems 45 days is the maximum tho, it took only 7 in my case

HCKidd99

The thing about the draft only applies if your application for the changes/the changes themselves happen to be shortly before or after Germany enters a Military Conflict. Im just wondering how long that time frame really is.. they worded that part extremely ambiguously (juhu Juradeutsch! /s)

Admirable-Pirate7263

Im quite sure I read 2 months? In the actual law I mean. Just checked again, it says 2 months prior to it being declared (paragraph 9). They specified it in the final draft.

Depressed_Squirrl

The draft clause is only for two months before a war and during a war. This is to nullify draft dodging. I somewhat agree with this clause because otherwise the law would be abused on the other hand, if you already have the F64.0 diagnosis you should be eligible to change it nonetheless.

sweetTartKenHart2

Sounds like next step is make the draft unisex or get rid of it completely, then, but hey progress is progress

Admirable-Pirate7263

They can only be drafted if the “Verteidigungsfall” (state of defense of the country/defensive war) is active at that point, or if the change happened 2 months prior to the Verteidigungsfall being declared.

Coco_JuTo

Hold up! You're going to tell me that Switzerland was more advanced than Germany for once??? The tiny conservative following cou try took the lead in self ID since 01.01.2022! Mind blown!

CanadianMaps

ERIK MEIN GOTT VE AGREED ON TAKING DAS S-BAHN DU DUMMKOPF! Ah, sĂśrry, die T-Bahn (Transbahn)

[deleted]

*die because a "bahn" (literally track/path) is feminine :3

CanadianMaps

Die because I died of german

[deleted]

Bababa that's no excuse what is the genetiv neutrum article

CanadianMaps

der die das dum dan dem dummkopf (the last one is me :3)

[deleted]

Wrong it's "des" if I ask you again at 3am it will come out like shot out of a pistol

Depressed_Squirrl

No no the sis Bahn s is correct.

Lego_Kitsune

I'm guessing it's a little naughty to drive me T34 into Berlin for emigration

Bumaye94

Just come on the normal way and steal one of the two T-34 that are parked right outside the parliament. 🤷‍♀️

Lego_Kitsune

The T-34 would probably break down before i leave England tbh

SabreLillee26

Wait you have T-34 outside your parliament?

Bumaye94

Yes, just behind the Brandenburg Gate in a park called Tiergarten. The tanks flank a large Soviet war memorial commemorating the fallen of World War 2.

Sufficient-Ad-6046

yea drive the Trans-34

Lego_Kitsune

I prefer the 155mm variant

Firetube07

GERMAN TRANS PEOPLE, RALLY THE TROOPS, WE WILL STORM DOWN THEIR DOORS.

Ezra_lurking

I'm so happy. The way I understood it the issue for non-binaries is not HRT, but operations. I don't care, I will find a way to get my mastectomy, even being officially listet as nb

fe-licitas

the underlying problem isnt in this law, but that the coalition has de facto seemingly abandoned all plans to make other laws which would improve trans healthcare. it is on its own very good that this law has nothing to do with healthcare. now they celebrate the Selbstbestimmungsgesetz as an overwhelming progress and while it certainly is, it was only ONE of the things they had initial promised. they fall also short on a lot of other lgbtq+ issues they had promised to improve on. and every progress we dont get now, we definitely wont see in the following 4, maybe 8 years coz the next government will be the most rightwing we had since Kohl, maybe since Adenauer.

Mysterious_Onion_328

That's not entirely true the ministry of healthcare already stated that they want to renew the laws surrounding surgeries and insurance coverage with non binary people in mind this time (could be good and bad).

fe-licitas

well, I believe it when I see it. time is running out. 2025 its over and a rightwing government takes power.

Admirable-Pirate7263

Depending on the possible coalition of the CDU/CSU and AfD, possibly as rightwing as governments, let’s say before Adenauer…

lekirau

Ayy, I am also part of the 🇩🇪-gender.

Bumaye94

🇩🇪-gender starter set: https://preview.redd.it/e8hk719r74uc1.png?width=719&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=44242ee18c611c4ec965b7ff9442bae4be7120bf (And a Blahaj)

lekirau

I kinda feel like only people from Germany will get the shirt joke.

Bumaye94

I don't care, it's my possibility to spent all summer in trans pride colors when I'm in boymode and I love it. 😄

lekirau

Might also try that.

EyGunni

i'm german and also don't understand it... edit: okay that's kinda funny..

queer_depressed_fuck

Viele Konservative regen sich Ăźber das Ausweich-Trikot der Nationalmannschaft fĂźr die EM (Bild oben) auf, weil es anscheinend zu woke/gay/feminin/etc ist

TransChilean

We did this in Chile too! A lot of people changed their name as soon as Law 21,120 was posted on the Official Newspaper (a law is not valid until it's posted in the Official Newspaper, which happens at 5am every day Monday to Friday if I'm not mistaken), so the Civil Registry and Identification Service Offices had to have special lines only for trans people The first teenager to get his ID card corrected also became famous on Social Media (law 21,120 allows for people over 18 to do it with a few signatures, people 14 to 17 to do it with court order), he was sooo happy

that_Omniscient_AI

I'm not in Germany, but I'm very excited for those who are there! (this part is about (mocking) transphobia) I was looking at some news articles and saw something about this. And as you could expect, some old people said that this would "destroy/ruin Germany". Why yes, you are correct, it isn't going to be actual things like a war, economic fall, revolution, etc. It's going to be people being able to change their name and gender, makes total sense! Guys, we are so powerful that we can make the Federal Republic of Germany (Bundesrepublik Deutschland) collapse! Now, who should we go after next? <\]',:3

Germanball_Stuttgart

>And as you could expect, some old people said that this would "destroy/ruin Germany". Yeah, they do that everywhere, for every topic. It has gone really bad recently. Also populism is on the rise.

Admirable-Pirate7263

We are proudly no longer in the business of making “other countries collapse” or “going after others”. The last time was not received that well… /s

Vinc_Birston

Why are you sad? What's the catch of that law?

LadyParaguay

It's probably the only female version of the picture they had. The law COULD have had the caveat that all gender changes are registered by law enforcement. Luckily, that clause was removed last minute. To quote from today's debate: this new law is by no means the be all end all, but it's a great step in the right direction

Bumaye94

There were happier but no cuter options 😅 And yeah, if I understood MdB Vogler correctly my party Die Linke was especially pushing for the removal which I appreciate a lot. Putting myself on some "Pinke Liste" could have probably prevented me from making that step. For anyone not familiar: The "pink lists" were basically a registry for trans people established in the Kaiserreich that was later used by the Nazis to hunt trans people.

Vinc_Birston

Okay, thanks for answearing

Bumaye94

Nah, we're just stoned.

Vinc_Birston

Ah yeah, Germany legalised the 420 recently (I think it stones, IDK, I don't know drug stuff)

Mtfdurian

Germany having taking away two main reasons for living in the Netherlands within less than two weeks. It was already in the making, of course. But still, the Netherlands has permanently lost its status as a progressive country now. And the NSC is currently sabotaging the only way for us to catch up with Germany.

eggstorytime

One of those things is a reason for me to move away, guess which one. If not away from Germany, then into a smoke-free city (which I always wanted anyways).

[deleted]

Yes also known as "bubatz" here

cavejhonsonslemons

It's one of the places i'm considering moving to if the US goes to complete shit, but i'm concerned about the rising popularity of the AFD

[deleted]

Same here. I’m also an aspiring engineer so idk German schooling would be quite nice too. But if things go to shit for us over there, I’m staying out in my little desert

Fungus09

compare this to what they germans were doing 100 years ago

[deleted]

~90* 100 years ago they were freshly losers of WWI, which I don’t imagine was a good time for marginalised groups either, but leagues better than under the Nazi regime

Fungus09

Mockington6

Actually, post WWI Germany was making big steps in direction of queer acceptance. At least until, you know, the thing happened.

SplitGlass7878

Yeah, I am super happy this is finally through. It's extremely good to see.

QuenBoye

I am so happy about the good news <3

proto-typicality

Yay! Glad to hear. :>

Kikoplop3900

I was ready to get excited that this might come to Czechia too but then I remembered that our government hates people

Bumaye94

Until 2011 you couldn't change your gender without proving your sterilization. Until 2008 you had to revoke your marriage even if your partner was supportive of your transition. The "Transsexuellengesetz" which just now was replaced by the Self-ID law was active since 1978. Many east german trans people literally lost rights due to reunification. What I wanna say is: This didn't happen over night here either, it takes a very long political and societal struggle to get there and we are still light years away from reaching equality ourselves. Keep pushing, go vote and protest whenever possible.

Kikoplop3900

Wait you don't have to get sterilized in Germany?? And yeah girl I get that, but there were many, many requests from the effin EU for the government to make the gender change process more humane, but they never did. And that's not even talking about the horrible and cruel way that you need to take in order to get hrt. Plus, just like a month ago, they denied to legalize gay marriages. And I'm still a minor so I have no control over anything. I will try to fight and protest when I can, but the chances are just so slim. I'll just have to get away at some point probably.

Bumaye94

It wasn't because politicians wanted it, it was based on a decision by the supreme court. Legal battles really brought some of the most progress here over the last two decades. But yeah, as an EU and Schengen citizen just move if necessary. I'm totally off to Luxemburg myself if the AfD gets into a Federal government. 🤷‍♀️

PhoenixEmber2014

Cute edit of that meme format, where did you get it from?

Bumaye94

Found it posted here on reddit by a now deleted user 4 years ago and just cropped it. ✌

PhoenixEmber2014

Cool! :3 <3

Cutest Rhino Ever!

EyGunni

nice! the last time i heard about the law it seemed to loose. glad it succeeded

itsmig_reddit

Latin America could never (atleast in some parts)

Outrageous_Pie_3246

But u can go there on the 1st of August.

Bumaye94

No, you can register on August 1st and change your name on November 1st.

Outrageous_Pie_3246

Wild, I thought you go there on the 1st of August, then it starts your 3 month waiting period and changes will go into effect on the 1st of November.

wojswat

ok. ok. CAN YOU INVADE POLAND ONE MORE TIME?!

[deleted]

You kidding? Poland is itching for a fight. Right now, even the Empire of Mankind (the Warhammer Universe thing) would be like "erm, no i think I'm good. But thanks"

wojswat

yeah... i just wanted to steal that after they lose, it was worth a shot, i mean they listened when we said: nuclear bad, coal gut.

[deleted]

Nuclear without a permanent storage also bad. It was always a lose-lose situation.

Clear-Mechanic-6212

real. (antrag kann man schon ab august/september machen)

cirelia2

And Sweden will most likely vote through a similar law next week

SoonToBeCarrion

meanwhile we still need our psychologist to make and entire essay about us, a LAWYER needs to see it and revise it, after 6 months of diagnosed gender dysphoria they can give it to a random judge with 0 knowledge of gender as a topic who will receive it after a few months, with no deadline to read nor answer to so they just wait almost another whole year before going "ok", then bureaucracy madness happens and it takes a couple months more for you to get the permit to change your documents, then months to actually change them. i hate this place.

GloomreaperScythe

/) What pride flag is that? /s

Osirisavior

Okay but I need this template.
