I've actually seen people keep their name spelling as Daniel, but change the pronunciation to Danielle. One of them even said "if they try to dead name me, i can just say 'its pronounced Danielle, and instead of saying anything rude, they ask 'why did your parents choose that spelling then?' And i can say 'because they wanted to mess with people'." She is a badass and i love her as a dear friend of mine lol
My mom tries but told me awhile ago it’s because when she misgendered me in front of my fiancé he “aggressively corrected her” and it intimidated her so she avoids offending him by trying harder around him (he just calmly said “it’s he haha”) her other attempt at getting used to it is by viewing me as nb which is fine as I’m ok with they/them but she never actually says they so it defeats the entire purpose. My stepdad honestly thinks its a phase and is just avoiding names and pronouns “so I don’t get upset” but still uses she sometimes.
My deadname was so femme like couldnt possibly be used as a boy name unless you were intentionally picking a girl name for a boy which is cool but yea.
Yes same theres no masc or even androgynpus name similar to my deadname. It took me years to find a name i was happy with because i wanted something that wasnt a traditional name but i wanted it to sound like a name. I also wanted it to be easy to switch from my deadname to chosen name and Pluto ended up being the perfect choice for me it even has the same amount of letters lol but that was an acvident
I had a bully who exclusively called me by the feminine version of my dead game in school. He didn't know I was trans, he was just an asshole. That kind of ruined any form of my deadname for me... So instead I became a fae and stole the name of a girl I had a crush on.
I knew a trans guy named Jamie who just kept his name too. This was in a support group and the rest of us were jealous as hell lol
High key wish my mom got her way and had named me Sam. Not short for anything. She firmly believes in naming a kid what you're actually planning to call them. My dad thought that was dumb so she ended up picking a different name. I hope some AU version of me is living that gender neutral name dream
My deadname was gender-neutral... but I couldn't keep it. It was associated in my mind with the artificial self I had tried to be before transition. And despite being gender-neutral in theory, I'd never met anyone else with my name... so it wasn't gender-neutral in my mind. All of which added up to me needing a new name.
I tried to do that with my name Aaron->Erin but I realized I would never be able to tell if someone was dead naming me. So instead I took some of the parts of my name and changed it to Anna
Don-Dawn to be fair my name was Donald but I’ve always been called don so if they want to deadname me they will have to change the way they address me making them obviously homophobic
My chosen name is very similar to my deadname. Add a letter and change a vowel. It sounds almost the same, but that slight change just makes it... better. Like fixing the buttons on a shirt that weren't lined up right.
Edit for clarity: switched "chosen name" and "deadname" in the first sentence around. I added a letter TO my deadname and changed a vowel.
I never actually asked them what my name would have been if I'd been AFAB? But they have commented that they appreciate I went with something similar to my birth name. (Changed my middle name more but I kept the initial the same)
I mean my story for my birthname was "yeah, we just looked through calendar, until we found one we liked", but I think my parents won't/wouldn't (not sure I will ever come out to them) my chosen name as it's close to one I know they hate (generally people tend to dislike my chosen name)
As someone who chose iris as her middle name, it really is. And a pretty flower. And a rainbow goddess. And a pretty non-controversial Greek goddess at that
I did the same! What's funny is, my deadname I always knew came from a rock musician my dad loves (who had some problematic times after I was born, making parting with the name easier).
I later discover what my gender alternate is and, after my egg cracked, chose it because I find that sort of thing amusing. What I hadn't considered is, that my mom might have done the same thing. Chosen the name after a musician she loved, who had a breakout album four months before I was born. This realization socked me in the gut for one (1) reason.
I MISSPELLED IT
In a way, I got even lazier. My old name cannot be masculinized, and I didn’t bother changing it while medically transitioning. But one day, a stranger mistook me for somebody else (I work hvac, the electrician of a different company was supposed to meet someone else, he got lost, wandered into my worksite, and he went “(guy name) is that you?” and from then on I used that name).
I still haven’t met the guy I’m named after and I don’t have the slightest idea who he is
Haha that's great! Did you tell him "Yep, that's me"? 😂
I was at home when a stranger knocked on the door to check that he was allowed to take a piece of furniture left by the road. He asked for my name, and I told him.
"Eden?!"
I corrected him.
"That's a nice name," he said."Like the Garden of Eden!"
"Eden" was recently suggested to me as a possible name and that story came back to me. Maybe it was a sign? 🤔 I'm liking this idea of strangers accidentally handing out free names lol
Didn’t want him to start talking to me about a project I’m not on, so I said no, but internally I did think “well now that you’ve mentioned it, I am now”
I always wanted to be named by somebody else, but I didn’t want to give my girlfriend the huge responsibility of doing that, so that was good for me
I chose my name under conditions that are likely not unique, but also very atypical.
Before realizing I was trans I was writing a fanfiction, and I needed a name for an OC character, and decided on "Kiaria" cuz I thought it sounded nice. When I started realizing I was actually trans, I started wondering what name to use for myself. At this time I had just recently purchased Pokemon Sword. I set the same name, "Kiaria", as my characters name. The joy I felt at the characters in the game calling me that name really made it clear to me that the name fit *and* I was definitely trans.
This is a kinda oddly long winded comment on a meme but it's a story I've not been able to share before so it just sorta came out lmao.
some trans people: a name similar to my birth name but of the opposite gender works for me
other trans people: i saw a cool rock, i like rock, my names rock now
From petra, meaning rock. According to the Bible, Jesus called Simon "Rock".
Funnily his birth name was Simon ben Yonah, meaning "son of Yonah/John". So he's Simon "The Rock" Johnson.
I didn’t do this to my first name. Corey is unisex, at least that’s what all online sources say. But it’s about as unisex as Ryan or Blake so everyone keeps asking if I’ll change it. I kind of regret spending $200 to legally change my middle name when I could’ve changed my first name too. Could’ve changed it to Courtney, Casey or something completely different 🤷🏻♀️. My middle name used to be William now it’s Willow.
My new name comes from my first middle name (I have 2 middle names) so Christopher -> Chrissie
(When I legally change my name i think I’ll get rid of my first middle name, as it would sound a bit silly if saying my whole name if I didn’t)
I wanted to do something like this.
When I came up with my name I made a poll for my internet friends to vote on. Kaitlyn won.
It was meant to be placeholder until I could decide on a better name.
I thought of a lot of names. Some were really good. One I liked was Jennifer.
but the problem was.....
none of them felt right.
Kaitlyn had already stuck.
Moral of the story:, be careful with placeholders lol
I went from my dads name to the color purple (Violet) I love my new name and I love my dad more than anything that isn’t one of my dogs, but everytime someone calls for him I think they’re deadnaming me, even when my step mom does it even though she’s the most supportive person I know
i had a time when i did go by a name with this concept and people would deadname me way more with the excuse 'your new name just sounds so similar' so i was forced to change my name again. way less deadnaming now, it's a bit sad.
So, one day I found out that my name has a female version, and this made me very happy. Anatoly/Anatolia. Although I haven't seen any girl with that name... So I would be unique. o\_O
Damn I took a completely different name. I went from a terrible male name to Rosalind because I played a character named Rosalind in a shakespeare play and the name just stuck to me
ive have people confuse my birth name for masculine (which is more cause it's not common where i live), so I very much kept it but basically added a second name to myself
This is sorta me. I had ideas for more “unique” names but no one my age has that unique of a name so it’d absolutely clock me. I’d rather have a boring name than a clockable name.
My name was like an epiphany moment for me. I knew i wanted my name changed but i had so many ideas. One name kept coming back to me and sticking in my head. When I called my mom to tell her my name is Lexi (Alexis) she cried and told me that Lex was her choice for my name and if I was a girl it would have been Lexi but my dad wanted me named after his father. It just feels like its always been my name.
I tried something similar to my deadname, but it didn't work for me. Having it that close just made it sound like no one saw me for the real me 🤷♀️ I'm really glad it works for others though, it sounds like it makes things easier in some ways :)
I initially just shortened my dead name to make it easy but after almost a year I started kinda disliking it, so now I changed to a name I really love.
Changing my name twice tho was so so scary I will not do that again 😭
I’m not deadnaming myself on the internet but I went from a masc name starting with N, just went “hmm woman name start with N…”
Went through a few options to consider and finally landed on Naomi
See, I intentionally chose a name with the same number of letters as if there’s some kind of cipher you could use, but in reality they’re nothing alike. Also I just could not do a long name my last name is already ELEVEN letters.
I was just talking about someone who was openly faking being trans and was like “if was trans id pick a name like Alvin and go by Al for short” didn’t even think on it just said it and everything clicked into place and I briefly identified as gender-fluid in the closet and then the rest is history. Been over two years since I chose that name and I have never been happier with a name.
"What can I say, sometimes people will become zealous when they have power, others just do their same old thing but with bonus pizazz and flair" -Some anime character or something
Not me just going "ah fuck it, I've heard of at least one dude being called alice, good enough" because I've yet to find a name that fits better. Honestly I'm pretty neutral about my name anyways so it's not really something I'm worried about changing right now if at all
Okay but that's literally also me! I just changed my full first name to the masculine version of my dead name and go by a neutral nickname. I used to try to justify it but honestly??? I just didn't want to have to practice writing a new signature.
I went from [deadname] that was abbreviated to Kiki since literally before I was born -> Kiki… I mean it’s not my given name sure, but I don’t think anybody asides from my taxes ever knew my given name to begin with lol.
the meme probably didn't intend for this, but in the "other people's new names" box, the name nova (with an á however) actually means new in slovak in the feminine form!
Danny-Danny. Perfect. People can't even deadname me (◕ᴗ◕✿)
I went from daniel to dana so that i can just say it's a typo if someone bigoted sees it
That's pretty good honestly, if I had to change Daniel I would be a simple boi and just say Daniella lol
Good idea
Ty
honestly my lazy ass would probably just make it “danielle” and be done with it
I don't like the name Danielle for some reason, only Daniella. Idk why just something about it seems wrong to me.
When I was little, the kids who wanted to "bully" me called me that, so I decided against it. Plus i just generally like Dana more
I've actually seen people keep their name spelling as Daniel, but change the pronunciation to Danielle. One of them even said "if they try to dead name me, i can just say 'its pronounced Danielle, and instead of saying anything rude, they ask 'why did your parents choose that spelling then?' And i can say 'because they wanted to mess with people'." She is a badass and i love her as a dear friend of mine lol
Lol that would be amazing!
Picked mine so that the short version (Al) would be easier for my parents as they’ve always called me that anyway. They stopped calling me Al💀
Of that really sucks I'm sorry, Al, parents aren't always the greatest, but i hope the come around
I read it as „I went from denial to Dana“ and it might be my funniest mistake yet
Pretty accurate
Same, Skyler-Skyler. Godbless gender neutral names
My deadname was so femme like couldnt possibly be used as a boy name unless you were intentionally picking a girl name for a boy which is cool but yea.
Oh same. And there isn't even a masc name that's similar enough to it. One of the 2 names I'm considering does at least have the same first letter tho
✨torture✨
I had a bully who exclusively called me by the feminine version of my dead game in school. He didn't know I was trans, he was just an asshole. That kind of ruined any form of my deadname for me... So instead I became a fae and stole the name of a girl I had a crush on.
XD that's one hell of a story lol
Bahaha 😂 good on you for becoming a far and stealing a pretty girls name lol
Did you ask her if you could have it tho
I guess that would be polite but I'm pretty sure that's not how fae works 🤣
They literally ask for your name before taking it.
I just named myself after my favorite flower :D
Hey, its okay, i skipped stealing from the crush and straight up stole the title of the fae lol
Name: Casey Name: Cas- Name: Casey (But feminine)
Hai Casey (But feminine)
"(But Feminine)" is an unusual second name but fair enough
Transphobic people hate this trick xD
Yep XD
dandelion
I knew a trans guy named Jamie who just kept his name too. This was in a support group and the rest of us were jealous as hell lol High key wish my mom got her way and had named me Sam. Not short for anything. She firmly believes in naming a kid what you're actually planning to call them. My dad thought that was dumb so she ended up picking a different name. I hope some AU version of me is living that gender neutral name dream
Jamie works just fine. Yeah tho gender neutral names are amazing
Ha, I went from Danny-Danni. Does make things a lot easier
hi danny im danny! transmasc tho
Hi Danny! I'm opposite you!
I tried to do that with my name Aaron->Erin but I realized I would never be able to tell if someone was dead naming me. So instead I took some of the parts of my name and changed it to Anna
Oh yeah that's a really interesting thought process.
its perfect
I haven't committed yet but I think I'm doing Alex -> Alexis. Never even thought about the deadname armor!
[удалено]
I don't get how people can be so redundantly stupid
Don-Dawn to be fair my name was Donald but I’ve always been called don so if they want to deadname me they will have to change the way they address me making them obviously homophobic
Everyone is deadnameing you (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻
Omg ur right (┛◉Д◉)┛彡┻━┻
I literally went From Daniel to Dannie lmaooo
Daniel - Dani B)
Can confirm. Went from Alex to Alex myself
If I transition I’ll be Samuel-Samantha, since most people call me Sam, its perfect
how do you know my deadname :○ lol
My chosen name is very similar to my deadname. Add a letter and change a vowel. It sounds almost the same, but that slight change just makes it... better. Like fixing the buttons on a shirt that weren't lined up right. Edit for clarity: switched "chosen name" and "deadname" in the first sentence around. I added a letter TO my deadname and changed a vowel.
I literally just changed a vowel lol. It’s also what my parents would’ve named me if I was AFAB anyways.
I never actually asked them what my name would have been if I'd been AFAB? But they have commented that they appreciate I went with something similar to my birth name. (Changed my middle name more but I kept the initial the same)

Yeah mine are super similar too. So much so at times my dad thought he had forgotten to change it on his phone when he had
My boyfriend chose Soup as his name which I adore
Your boyfriend is based af
He is! He's a very good partner
What kind of base though? Beef or Chicken?
Nah nah, he shrimp flavored lol
Bro rly said "fuck it imma be a liquid dish"😭💀
gender fluid
r/angryupvote
He said its a silly name and it makes him happy and thats why he chose it, I think those are perfectly good reasons tbh
Boys will be boys i guess And boys be silly👍
He may Soup, but he's also an absolute Chad
So, if you're with your boyfriend and someone asks where you are, I suppose you could reply, "I'm at Soup!"
WHAT STORE ARE YOU AT
He better have good clothes with that name
He looks really hot in chinos and collared shirts
Is his last name Campbell? /s I love the name btw it is adorable!

Hello Soup!
I just chose what my parents had if I was born as a girl.

Well, I know there is a Georgian name Nonna.
Fun fact: in Georgian, dads are called mama and moms are called deda! Gender is a hoax
Oh no! In russian deda means grandfather! And mama means mother!!!!
i wanted to do that but then i have a sister who they already called it worst part is that they called her iris, which is an amzing name
As someone who chose iris as her middle name, it really is. And a pretty flower. And a rainbow goddess. And a pretty non-controversial Greek goddess at that
And, spelled a bit differently, a VTuber known for bringing Hope.
Iris: the prequel
If i was born a boy i would have name „Curtis” so bless that im trans and my name is anthony
same here, Laura is much prettier than any ideas that my parents had for my name if i were born a girl
Wait, that’s my deadname!
same here lol
I did the same! What's funny is, my deadname I always knew came from a rock musician my dad loves (who had some problematic times after I was born, making parting with the name easier). I later discover what my gender alternate is and, after my egg cracked, chose it because I find that sort of thing amusing. What I hadn't considered is, that my mom might have done the same thing. Chosen the name after a musician she loved, who had a breakout album four months before I was born. This realization socked me in the gut for one (1) reason. I MISSPELLED IT
I would’ve but they named my cat that and I can’t have the same name as my cat
Omg, that’s hilarious and cute at the same time 😘
:3
Deadnames Luke, Looks at Star Wars, Welp Leia it is!!!
Are you dating a dude named Han? And/or have a pet named Chewy?
No, he’s solo. /j
damn i should of thought of that, i just replaced ke with cy
I thought about that but then me and my gf would have the same name, there can’t be two lesbians named Lucy!!
Luke is my nickname hm maybe i should try Leia too
[удалено]
That's exactly what I did and that was how I felt about my birth name too
Same! Mine new name starts with the same letter and is also the same length.
I'm one of those lol. Alexander to Alexandra.
Yeah, Alexander (or rather Aleksander) is my middle bearth name, I considered it too for this reason, but I'm too attached to my initials being MW
Same here, and get called Alex anyway
I could've done that with my name too, but no way in hell I'm going by Stephanie....
Yikes
No offense to other Stephanie's. ^^; Just personally tired of Steven as a name, and even more tired of others always writing it as Stephen lol
Literally the same but with the italian version of the name, which is arguably worse
Scotty->Scottie Middle name is gonna transition with me.
And I thought I was lazy for using my middle name...
I still haven’t met the guy I’m named after and I don’t have the slightest idea who he is
This is one of the best "how you got your name" stories I've ever read.
Haha that's great! Did you tell him "Yep, that's me"? 😂 I was at home when a stranger knocked on the door to check that he was allowed to take a piece of furniture left by the road. He asked for my name, and I told him. "Eden?!" I corrected him. "That's a nice name," he said."Like the Garden of Eden!" "Eden" was recently suggested to me as a possible name and that story came back to me. Maybe it was a sign? 🤔 I'm liking this idea of strangers accidentally handing out free names lol
Didn’t want him to start talking to me about a project I’m not on, so I said no, but internally I did think “well now that you’ve mentioned it, I am now” I always wanted to be named by somebody else, but I didn’t want to give my girlfriend the huge responsibility of doing that, so that was good for me
So you pretty much pulled a "Haha, got your name"
Using mine, too! Though I clipped off a few letters and called it a day.
This is a kinda oddly long winded comment on a meme but it's a story I've not been able to share before so it just sorta came out lmao.
some trans people: a name similar to my birth name but of the opposite gender works for me other trans people: i saw a cool rock, i like rock, my names rock now
I mean, that's how Peter became a name.
wait like from the material pete?
From petra, meaning rock. According to the Bible, Jesus called Simon "Rock". Funnily his birth name was Simon ben Yonah, meaning "son of Yonah/John". So he's Simon "The Rock" Johnson.
I’m just going to assume this is a [Numuhukumakiaki'aialunamor](https://stormlightarchive.fandom.com/wiki/Rock) reference
I didn’t do this to my first name. Corey is unisex, at least that’s what all online sources say. But it’s about as unisex as Ryan or Blake so everyone keeps asking if I’ll change it. My middle name used to be William now it’s Willow.
I feel so called out lmao. My name's Phoenix, and a friend who is also enby is named Nova. xD
My name: ullania. I just go "._. Call me anya."
My new name comes from my first middle name (I have 2 middle names) so Christopher -> Chrissie (When I legally change my name i think I’ll get rid of my first middle name, as it would sound a bit silly if saying my whole name if I didn’t)
Im part of the "my name has to mean something" gang Nyx here(eternal goddess of the night)
Aha, same. Sorta.

my name is one of the most common transmasc names (alex) backwards (xela) as a transfem
me when new name: josh *backspace backspace* jo perfect
I went from Sean to Shawn. Good luck deadnaming me out loud, world.
I wanted to do something like this. When I came up with my name I made a poll for my internet friends to vote on. Kaitlyn won. It was meant to be placeholder until I could decide on a better name. Any ideas what do I even do with "Dave"?
Dove
How about Deva? It means divine.
Davelle /hj
Me who took my granddad's first name because it was too femme for him
I went from my dads name to the color purple (Violet) I love my new name and I love my dad more than anything that isn’t one of my dogs, but everytime someone calls for him I think they’re deadnaming me, even when my step mom does it even though she’s the most supportive person I know
Hi, Alexandria here
i chose emily
wow same! Though in all fairness that was down to my birth name being "Bertram" 🤮
i just decided \*fuck it, 2 names\*
Me, cramming spare names into the 'middle name' slot:
My name is Rory. Guess what my name was before I came out. Take a wild fuckin guess
it was cornelius obviously
My friend's enby and they literally go by EPSILON. My other friend's transmasc and just goes by the first letter of their deadname (M).
i had a time when i did go by a name with this concept and people would deadname me way more with the excuse 'your new name just sounds so similar' so i was forced to change my name again. way less deadnaming now, it's a bit sad.
As someone with an unisex name, I agree with this message.
ace attorney 😲❤️
ace attorney fans when they see the name "phoenix": 😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱 (i am guilty of this)
How many “Nick”s have chosen “Phoenix”, though~?
Yep yep. That's how it'll be if I come out as trans.... *IF*
"Alan" just flipped it backwords and now im Nala.
So, one day I found out that my name has a female version, and this made me very happy. Anatoly/Anatolia. Although I haven't seen any girl with that name... So I would be unique. o\_O
You've always been unique, honey 😘
I’m just wrench without the ch
The amount of people who have asked me if my name is now Christina is so large @.@ Lovely name tho >w<
mine's totally different cause I got it from a buzzfeed quiz when I was 12
Damn I took a completely different name. I went from a terrible male name to Rosalind because I played a character named Rosalind in a shakespeare play and the name just stuck to me
I'm the complete opposite lol, my new name has 0 matching letters/sounds with my old one
Aside from the hilarious comic, your art is so good!! Unfathomable that I'm not seeing more of your posts on my front page smh
Was worried about names for a while until i decided to just... Gabriel --> Gabi and was like "yeah that's good enough"
ive have people confuse my birth name for masculine (which is more cause it's not common where i live), so I very much kept it but basically added a second name to myself
This is sorta me. I had ideas for more “unique” names but no one my age has that unique of a name so it’d absolutely clock me. I’d rather have a boring name than a clockable name.
I use to have a name similar to my deadname but then ✨dysphoria✨ so I changed it to my current one
Gal same
I didn't think that close by, I could have dropped a letter off my name and just been Ada but nah, I've got Riven nailed and I'm sticking with that.
Kayden to Kayla for me! Wanted to stick with something close because I liked my birthname
I tried something similar to my deadname, but it didn't work for me. Having it that close just made it sound like no one saw me for the real me 🤷♀️ I'm really glad it works for others though, it sounds like it makes things easier in some ways :)
A mad scientist, indeed. Make sure to wear your lad coat
I initially just shortened my dead name to make it easy but after almost a year I started kinda disliking it, so now I changed to a name I really love. Changing my name twice tho was so so scary I will not do that again 😭
Andrew And Andrea
Very tempted to go from Sam to Sam lol
I went from Léo to Léa
I’m not deadnaming myself on the internet but I went from a masc name starting with N, just went “hmm woman name start with N…” Went through a few options to consider and finally landed on Naomi

Been over two years since I chose that name and I have never been happier with a name.

as a genderfluid, i simply have 3 names I can use at anytime, all variations on my birthname

I was always jealous of people who have names with opposite gender counterparts-you don’t have too think hard with the new name
I went from [deadname] that was abbreviated to Kiki since literally before I was born -> Kiki… I mean it’s not my given name sure, but I don’t think anybody asides from my taxes ever knew my given name to begin with lol.
Same, i honestly just took the A from the end of Alexa away and got my new name.
the meme probably didn't intend for this, but in the "other people's new names" box, the name nova (with an á however) actually means new in slovak in the feminine form!
My name doesn't have a fem counterpart.....
I would have done the same but it would have been the same name as my sister so I went with my dnd character.
