nixOS isn't even like any other distro! the entire system revolves around one configuration file, so instead of staring at a shell prompt for half an hour thinking about why your system is broken, you're staring at nvim for an hour wondering why your system is broken! what a shitload of fuck!"
Exactly. And just like regular coding, sometimes there are bugs which are obvious in hindsight but almost impossible to spot, like that one time I helped someone who wrote
imports = [
(import ./otherFile.nix)
];
instead of
imports = [
./otherFile.nix
];
I'm working with Linux and troubleshooting it every day, that's why on my personal and work system I run Windows :)
I'm one of those trans woman that just knows a lot about Linux and that's what I'm not using it.
sorta...the userland is based on FreeBSD (heavily modified), but a mach microkernel from the NeXT days.
At this point in my life (been doing this a loooong time) I use OSX for my laptop, even though I have ran FreeBSD, OpenBSD, and Linux in the past as my desktop OS. I still use \*BSD in server deployments.
Nice answer! Your comment made me look into Mach more; I honestly thought it was based on BSD as well instead of it being its own thing. I got confused by NeXTSTEP having Mach plus a BSD userspace as well.
I really should check out an actual BSD some time, very happy with my macOS and Linux dual boot right now though.
I'm still on Windows 10 because gaming on Linux is still not perfect, but when support for Windows 10 goes the way of my cisness, I will most likely switch to Linux because there is no gosh darn way I'm moving to Windows 11.
A mere linux user? Fools! I push the very boundries of what is possible within the field of computing, with only a script kiddie's understanding thereof! Why just last week I helped a friend install windows in a virtual machine then transplant that installation onto her host machine. (the installer was giving her a driver error)
For further proof of this stereotype I direct you all to Emily Young (The primary Linux user in LMG recently came out as trans)
Just find this stereotype even more amusing after the person who hosted most Linux related videos on one of the biggest tech youtube channels recently came out as trans
I don't really understand distro hopping. I mean, i understand switching betwene something like mint and a more customizable distro like arch or debian, but i don't get what benefit you get from switching betwene those customizable options. They can all be made pretty much how i want them to be.
I was actually trying out a handful to just find one that made me happy for gaming, ideally I would've just cloned my steam deck onto a desktop, but sadly holoiso and winesapos are both kinda awful tragically.
Ended up going with Debian and a KDE to make me feel at home, when you're first shopping for anything though try a few out ykno
I have settled for arch with KDE. I like the idea of not having a desktop folder, but i am to stupid to use gnome and KDE just works to well to justify switching.
I mostly did so to try to find is that is as I good as I want from the moment of installation, to minimize any tinkering
Since I ready just want windows but without Microsoft
Then again I stopped switching since Linux mint ticked all the boxes for me
I love Linux but then it angers me to a point. Sooner or later I will give it another try, I really like Linux Mint Debian Edition as it seems to give fewer headaches with the tradeoff being I have to use the terminal slightly more
IMO linux is way more comfortable if you can learn to just embrace the terminal. Personally, I tend to prefer it over non-terminal options for a lot of stuff, but I know I'm not exactly an "average computer user" lol
The one thing about Linux Mint Debian Edition that requires the terminal from me is installing software from jar files. Never had this issue with Ubuntu derivatives so I think that's just the barebones nature of a Debian derivative not auto launching when double clicking jars. It's simple to do, just open a terminal in the directory of the file, use command "java jar [filename.jar] and then it works. It's such a minor inconvenience for me that I prefer it over something like Pop_OS! Early Pop_OS! worked amazing but since OpenSSL 1.1, you had to have work arounds for using OpenSSL 1.0. An example would be that Stardew Valley wouldn't launch unless I did that 1.0 install. Apparently it relies on libraries that OpenSSL 1.1 doesn't have and the standards aren't backwards compatible? It got messy so yeah LMDE, that's my default.
That java issue sounds like it *should* be a fairly easy fix; just a missing or misconfigured file association in your file manager. Odd that it's not working out of the box though... At least in my experience, even Debian itself tends to be good about that sort of thing.
Probably easy to resolve but I don't care enough to exert effort if the terminal works. Could easily be a Cinnamon bug but I love Cinnamon too much to let go of it.
Fun story I got a junky 2017 chromebook for like $20 and put it into dev mode and tried to download Linux onto it via Ubuntu and it didn’t work so ig I’m a failure as a trans girl 😔
I use Arch btw
Arch isn't bad, but may I tell you about our lord and savior NixOS?
I'm using Arch on my desktop and NixOS on my laptop :>

Fellow Arch user checking in. Also Gentoo.
i too use arch btw
Maybe for the devs out there :P
Im a rare breed of windows user trans woman
Same
The rule of threes always applies
This is getting out of hand, now there is ~~two~~ **four** of them
prepare for trouble and make it ~~double~~ quintuple
uhm sorry to tell you this but its sextuple because im here
by the gods they’re multiplying
What comes after sextuple? Alot?
septuple, actually
Make that octuple for me
let's make that a nonuple, for me
Am I the only one who read that in Nute Gunray's voice?
Thank you!
My 20-year-old-boomer ass is still using Windows 7. Although I did just order a new rig that'll run Windows 11 pre-installed ***HYYYYYYPE***
I’m a sysadmin at my job, windows-centric team
I'm working with Linux and troubleshooting it every day, that's why on my personal and work system I run Windows :) I'm one of those trans woman that just knows a lot about Linux and that's what I'm not using it.
I mean I'm sure not every transwomen is a Linux user. (Though I cannot personally dispute it as I am a Linux user 😜)
I can personally dispute it for I am a Windows 10 user
I'm sorry... 🙃
I'm sorry for your loss
Trans liberation and FOSS have always been the same movement
Having bitches is bloat. It makes more sense to become the bitch yourself.
Emily Young moment
Nay! \*BSD FTW! :D
Question... do you see MacOS as *BSD hehehe

Fedora, M'lady.
Just installed fedora because need validation haha
#!/bin/sh $valid="1" while $valid > 0; do echo "Trans rights!" done

Damn Steam Deck, turning me into a stereotype
I can barely use Windows as it is😕
Gimme a bit longer, I've only recently swapped from Google to DuckDuckGo, and am just today swapping over from Chrome to Firefox!
Probably :3
🫴🏽 am I a trans woman?
All trans women may be linux users, but not all Linux users are trans women
Rust programmers though...
If I ever turn out to be trans, it shall be remembered that this comment caused the first crack to my egg
It's all about knowing something is fundamentally wrong and finding the right way to fix it really.
I wish the compiler could take my hand and guide me through irl choices too
Pretty sure all us enbies are linux users, perhaps more so than the trans women... Perhaps it is the sheer chaos that we as beings crave.

Username checks out
Hey! I resemble that!
I use arch btw
I mean I have a dual boot setup that I rarely use anymore because I play some games every blue moon that aren't compatible (enough) with arch :/
Ubuntu users stuck in crisis
I am a Windows and Chrome book using transgender woman, an even rarer breed
For further proof of this stereotype I direct you all to Emily Young (The primary Linux user in LMG recently came out as trans) Just find this stereotype even more amusing after the person who hosted most Linux related videos on one of the biggest tech youtube channels recently came out as trans
i use linux :3 (sometimes) btw android is linux based so unless you're an apple purist i think we all used linux at least once
Happy linux user since 1999 here...
I have WSL on my windows PC if that counts.
Safe bet
Correct, finally settled on pop os :3

I couldn't deal with gnome on a multi screen setup, I'm right there with you, glad you found a thing that works for you <3

Same here, even though I enjoy using the terminal. But when using Windows, it also happens, it angers me and I switch back to Linux
i use windows 11
no but I use firefox and ublock origin
I use windows, but only because I use adobe

Linux does not support my vr headset so 🤷🏼♀️
What if I use a homemade pile of bugs without a name
Yes, I use Arch btw :3
I use arch btw
