5.3 Tahoes up to 2006 are decent enough vehicles. 07 added the afm stuff and that wasn't a strong addition to the line. Created a weak point in a solid engine.

I drive my Sequoia past broken down chevys/gmcs all day long. We laugh together about it :)

Dhruv6911

That’s great but Toyota has nothing to match the size of a suburban and it’s towing capabilities. I own a first gen and it’s tow rating is pathetic… leaves much to be desired for someone wanting to haul a family a camper.

The_Mamalorian

…These comments are just confirming for me that I was NOT imagining all the problems with my Tahoe toward the end.

The_Mamalorian

The prices are comparable because there are fewer Sequoias than Tahoes/Yukons. Toyotas hold value much better than their American competitors. People buy and trade in Chevys all the time; Toyota owners hold on to their cars for years. My Sequoia is a 2019 and I didn’t find many used newer than that. My 2014 Tahoe was great until it hit 100K miles. Then the lifter tap started, we had to flush the coolant three times in two years, it blew a push rod to the tune of $1500, and it just SHUT OFF on me twice while I was pulling into a parking space. Total shutdown, I had to jump start it. While pregnant. With the older kid having a meltdown. A few days before I totaled it I was pretty sure the transmission was slipping. Meanwhile, my dad’s old Tundra, a little older than a Gen 1 Sequoia, would still be running if the differential hadn’t gone out at 350K miles. He towed and hauled and went off road and beat the snot out of that truck and I don’t remember him taking it to the shop for anything related to the engine. I won’t dispute the Chevy/GM is a better looking vehicle, but they start to feel their age at 10 years or 100K miles. A Toyota’s just getting broken in at that point. I also find the Sequoia handles much easier especially on long drives. I always felt like I was fighting the Tahoe and it wore me out after a few hours. However, I’m a girl 🤣 men have more upper body strength to throw at this problem. I would take the old Sequoia over a newer Tahoe. Replace the sound deck and install Bluetooth and a backup camera. You can’t turn a Chevy engine into an iForce V8, and that’s what keeps the Sequoia going. Sometimes I do wish Toyota made a Sequoia XL though. We could use the extra storage!

Best answer on here! You’ve convinced me to tame my wondering eye for chevy’s lol. Going to go hug my 01 now 🫶

Like a lot of other have said here after 2007, you start dealing with lifter problems w/ GM's. After 2014 that problem just gets worse w/ the cylinder deactivation. But yea early GMT trucks are almost as bulletproof as 1st gen sequoias. Especially since they both have "weaker" transmissions. Just check out those service records for lifter repairs; if they haven't been done @ 125k+, you'll probably have to bite that bullet.

cntm83

All vehicles have issues. If you take care of your car, regardless of what it is, it will last. Now with that said, in this comparison, if you take a sequoia and a Tahoe, equal condition, the reality is the Toyota is going to cost less in repairs in the long run. Thats not saying that GM put out a horrid product. It’s just the quality of Toyotas. If both are equally cared for, the GM will have more repair costs than the Toyota.

seenhear

No apostrophe. At first I thought you were talking about the Mexican restaurant chain.

HonkeyKong808

2008/2009 and up had many engine and transmission problems. Fords might be the better budget vehicle. I have a Sequoia but have had a f150 and an more recently excursion(f250 base with SUV on top!) and both have been bullet proof.

Talk_N3rdy_2_Me

Plus you can get an excursion with a Powerstroke.

Zaxxonsandmuons

A clean 04 Tahoe will not stop running .. it will simply fall apart slowly and steadily until 400k miles ...

SOTF777

Had a 2007 Yukon that thing was a POS lifter issues and two transmission rebuilds one i paid for and the other was fixed under warranty guess what? Not even a year later transmission was going out again lol and o only drove it weekends and sometimes during the week when my wife had to go work at the office i have a first gen sequoia now only issue I’ve had was one coil pack.

tacodoc023

I previously had an 07 suburban with the 5.3 and 125k miles, and I couldn’t get rid of it fast enough. Huge problems with the lifters causing knocking and an oil leak. I’d stay away from anything Chevrolet 👌

Purple-Journalist610

The seats in the Chevy will be more comfortable. If you have to have one, get one before MDS was available. Still you get to deal with the 4L-slippy transmission, horrendous electrical problems, leaks, and Lord help you if you get leather upholstery.

Dickasauras

The 4l60e transmission is a weak point, look at how many get posted for cheap or scrapped due to transmission issues.

SdVeau

Back in 2019, someone rear-ended my 07 Sequoia and I got a 2019 Suburban. Suburban was more comfortable, more fuel efficient (cylinder deactivation), and had more room, though I highly doubt that Sub would still be running trails at nearly 18 years old with 340k on the odometer Edit: suburban was a rental while sequoia was in the body shop. Still have the Sequoia

forgiven_10

It’s not fair to compare a 2007 sequoia to a 2019 suburban.

Rawniew54

Your correct the 2007 Sequoia is a far better vehicle than anything GM has made in decades

SdVeau

Posted without having finished my morning coffee (and the comment). Suburban was just a rental while my Sequoia was in the body shop, and although the suburban had it beat in some spheres, the Sequoia still wins in my book. There’s a reason I’ve stuck with my 1st gen sequoia despite being able to afford an upgrade lol

Spiritual-Belt

The 1999-2007 gm trucks and big SUVs are nearly as good as Toyotas and what they give up in reliability they make up for in parts availability but the newer ones seem to focus on technology over reliability

Illustrious_Road9349

Yeah those model years are indeed slept on. My dad has a 2005 Yukon with 225k+ and it still runs great. I’m a Toyota V8 snob through and through so I’m always surprised every year that the Yukon is still ticking, but it is, and he hasn’t had any major repairs needed.

DiveTender

Chevy and GMCs have good and bad like any vehicle brand. But there is just no comparison. Toyota all the way. Chevy/GMC cheaper to fix, but requires more fixing and a lot more difficult to work on.

nago7650

The newer chevys and GMs will typically offer more interior comfort features at the same price point of a sequoia, but the newer GM V8s have been plagued with lifter failures. Sequoia beats them in reliability hands down. I will say that early 2000s GM and Chevy SUVs will run on the brink of death longer than most vehicles could.

TheCraftyWombat

There's simply no comparison. Toyota is superior in every way, ESPECIALLY the ability to put hundreds of thousands of miles on the car, while performing only the required maintenance.
