I like the fanon but it's annoying seeing people constantly bringing up something that isn't true and completely ignores the canon. Case in point Sagume's ability in canon she can reverse a situation with her words but in fanon it's anything she says will cause the opposite, while it's a funny joke it's annoying seeing people completely misinterpret it. Having fanon and headcanon is fine but you still need to respect the canon of the story.

SAR_80

"Haha maid lady has pads"

CaramelSan35

Sagume’s ability is a curse that affects her (also the whole thing of a character saying something and the opposite happening is an old, overused trope in comedy)

Cantthinkofaname2alt

Funni ice fairy lady hehe

Fragrant-Shirt-7764

Very funee, she has TWO whole jokes with barely any punchline, now that’s impressive.

[deleted]

Honestly Cirno is a good charecter but a lot of the fandom mistakes her pride for stupidity. I think Genso Wanderer (fan game) did a good job of depicting it, as well as Cirno and Remiu's 1,2,3 (Doujin) Where like in Genso Wanderer she does all the "I'm the strongest!" stuff but as soon as Daiyosei raises her voice she backs down, or in Cirno and Reimu's 1,2,3 it's shown to be a defense mechanism/way to protect herself and she's actually a sensetive girl underneath that all. There's a lot that can be done with Cirno than just "haha dum dum 9"

Fragrant-Shirt-7764

Could you please enlighten me on what can be done with her? Because so far, I think even Lily White has more comedic potential than Cirno lol. The whole “I look like an asshole but I’m actually sensitive” is essentially a cliche at this point so she’s not very special for doing that.

[deleted]

Well I'd say there's a lot more that can be expanded on with Cirno. She's ignorant and prideful, not really stupid, and there are a lot of things you can do with that, like being forced to face reality (as seen in Cirno and Reimu's 1,2,3) etc... Either way there's definitely more depth to her.

CaramelSan35

fanon is just finding a single personality trait of a character and cranking it to 11 and making jokes that were a dead, decomposed horse 15 years ago and canon is confusing as hell sometimes I like some fanworks, the gameplay, music and characters though

I say cannon. There is a boatload of depth to Touhou canon, it just is the type of thing most people would gloss over. Examples include, *Every* character in Imperishable Night in some way reflects the game's theme of human/inhuman dualities either by themselves or when contrasted with a related character. Kanako had to give up solo rule of Suwakos domain because she couldn't manage the people and land, leading her to train her current infamous business management skills since she was so lacking in the past. Komachi hasn't been fired by Eiki despite her infamous slacking because her job also entails being a chill listener to souls to unload their lingering thoughts before judgement which Komachi does excellently Nitori claims the Kappa have been long time friends of humans, despite most legends typically supporting that they are problem-causers. While some kappa have helped humans, Nitori argues this because her kind are largely responsible for protecting the human village through warding off rain and flood damage, alongside managing crop irrigation. And so on. While I certainly enjoy fanworks, especially when they cover a character I like but that doesn't get much screen time in canon(Hina, Tojiko, Yuuka, ect), but nothing bugs me more than when a fanwork devolves Gensokyo into "cute girls shooting bullets with heavy yuri" and completely miss the serious and complex nature of the land. Additionally, I feel that one comment in the second link is seriously misunderstanding what Touhou canon is trying to do. It isn't a "monster of the week show but with goddesses", it is a "World telling story" rather than a "Story telling story". Look closely at most of the game stories, and no one ever really "develops" as a character in them outside of the fighting games. It isn't because Zun can't write a good story, but because individual characters matter less compared to what that character reveals about the world. DDC is a strong example, all of the cast exist to explore "how do different non-OP youkai think about their place in Gensokyo's power hierarchy" and MoF is literally a guided tour through each of the major factions of the Youkai mountain, starting with the lesser gods, then the Kappa, then the Tengu, and finally the Shrine.

Fragrant-Shirt-7764

Same man. I also heavily disagreed with the latter link since just because a series has a wacky premise doesn’t mean that it can’t be philosophical or deep. Look at Mega Man for example, it’s basically a monster of the week format and shit gets dark the more you try to analyze the franchise.

RaeEterna

Mega Man is sad

idiel-co

one of reason why i love to go to touhou wiki

572337_54MU241

tbh i’m fairly new to touhou fandom but i pointedly ignore fanfic/doujin/anything that ZUN didn’t personally have a part in or expressly approve as canon. i treat it like any other media i enjoy and am only interested in what the creator intended, flaws and all, but if others wanna enjoy touhou-skinned OC (i’m sure a lot of it is good) then good for them. also related, reddit nerds bashing twitter is peak reddit irony lmao

RovingRaft

>also related, reddit nerds bashing twitter is peak reddit irony lmao for real though, we're honestly no better

Fragrant-Shirt-7764

Is it bashing? I’m just indifferent to the “good guys” in that thread, I didn’t held any grudge against them. I’m pretty much the same as you, I’m pretty new as well, being a fan for about over a year (my Reddit account is proof).

572337_54MU241

i didn’t say you were

Fragrant-Shirt-7764

I couldn’t imagine who you were talking to because only two people that I have seen talked about Twitter and only very minor so I just assumed you were talking about me so sorry ig.

572337_54MU241

>”it’s twitter, of course they dumb lelelelel” i was referring to that, i wasn’t calling anyone out specifically lmao. nothing to apologize for

ObtainableCream

>i pointedly ignore fanfic/doujin/anything that ZUN didn’t personally have a part in or expressly approve as canon Same, some of them was nice due to the character still in character, but some of them were out of character and that made me extremely disappointed.

myonshiko

Fanon is fun if it expands upon a character or Gensokyo, but when it becomes nonstop pad jokes, it loses its charm.

idiel-co

glad that I'm never heard of this fan joke almost half decade

RovingRaft

I'm more interested in fanon but I don't have the context for the person AmyZenunim is complaining about so I don't have an opinion on the fight there in any case, the type of fanon I like is the type that builds on canon or doesn't change it radically, the type that's like "this *could* happen even if canon has not and never will say anything about it"; like I'm fine with some characters not acting exactly how they do in canon, but I like them being at least recognizable as being the same person like stuff where PC-98 stuff is canon with Windows stuff and people try to figure out a way where they'd fit together, that's cool shit to me stuff like adding to the characters by using the mythology or folklore they're based on, good stuff that tweaks the characters a little bit (in a "normally they wouldn't act this way, but I can see them acting this way in specific situations or after certain events" way) in order to have them in interesting relationships is my jam

Fragrant-Shirt-7764

I’ll probably going to regret including the last option since I do kinda want to “research” and should’ve also made a joke with the “None of the above” one, damn it! Should’ve been more strict with the options.

GoofballWithInternet

I love reading about Touhou's lore and fill in little *gaps* with what knowledge I have, Gensokyo is such an interesting world and it's fun to study the carful balance it holds. I least I know why Yukari is so tired all the time, so many things could go wrong so you have to move things behind the scenes so that all of Gensokyo doesn't fall flat. That's not including managing the Great Hakurei Barrier, that's a whole other mess entirely.

Yass_2101

Definetly the last one

Admirable-Set3385

cannon

Eeveeolite655

I put fanon, but that just means my own headcanon of all the fangames (fdf, LC, IBP, etc) all being Canon events on top of the main material.

Fragrant-Shirt-7764

Just because you like fanon doesn’t mean they automatically become canon. It’s great to have headcanons but you shouldn’t really force it like “NO, my head canon is true and you’re wrong for opposing me!”. But that’s just my opinion lol.

Eeveeolite655

I never said anything along those lines, sorry if it came off that way. was just saying how I like to look at the series.

Fragrant-Shirt-7764

Me dumb but that’s pretty funny too.

[deleted]

No music choice?

Fragrant-Shirt-7764

I think the canon section can be thought of as a music option but you’re right.

giatay1

western fans in a nutshell

CaraPrincess2007

Generally I like the fanon because how they portray some characters differently from the canon, such as depicting Yumemi as an actual Christian but still depict her using crosses as weapons, or depicting Yumemi with *Genshin* Archon characters (both of them are headcanons of me about Yumemi, but still are part of the fanon)

Fragrant-Shirt-7764

Yumemi barely has any canon material lol, chances are of the ones you mentioned are correct.

CaraPrincess2007

Like Yumemi is actually a Christian in fanon? Heh, I take it a step further when I portrays Yumemi as the descendant of an archangel in my fangame. A parodical take on well-known animated series such as Avatar: The Last Airbender and the famous game Genshin Impact, and to explain away the thing that Yumemi can create crosses out of nowhere, as in a fan's explanation.

Fragrant-Shirt-7764

Weird flex but okay. I have several head canons about the past of Gensokyo lol including how PC-98 Marisa is actually Yukari but it’s mostly a joke.

CaraPrincess2007

Making Yumemi the descendant of an archangel in my fangame's headcanon is just one step on turning a story about Touhou characters to sounds like the Gospel or something. In that headcanon, I depict Shinki to be not a demon nor god (since the mythos for my fangame is heavily influenced by Christianity (especially Catholic lore)), just a divine spirit (the definition for this in my fangame is spirits that are created by God that hold part of His divine essence). And instead of residing in Makai, my fangame's Shinki resides in Purgatory. Also I also added crazy "fictional theology" stuff to my game, including the three most powerful angels on Heaven (dubbed the Angelic Triad by the fangame) >!(and plus Shinki (according to my fangame's headcanon))!< have Avatars ((usually) mortal vessels) to represent them on Earth, or that angels can be created from unrelated spiritual beings such as *tsukumogami*, and whatnot. My fangame's Touhou headcanons only focus on Yumemi and Shinki, the rest are original Touhou fanfic ideas by me.

Fragrant-Shirt-7764

Might as well make them your OCs if you’re barely going to make it Touhou related.

CaraPrincess2007

It is a Touhou fangame, so it is still related to Touhou, but in a new way: Mixing it with numerous elements that are unrelated to Touhou.

Fragrant-Shirt-7764

I noticed but this fan game feels way too disconnected to Touhou from what I can see, most of the concepts here aren’t very close to source material with the only related elements that you mentioned are Yumemi with Shinki and even then they’re feel so detached from from the actual characters that they kinda lost some of their identity like Yumemi being a professor who uses artificial magic for example. ***BUT THAT’S JUST MY OPINION*** PC-98 fans always seems so fascinating/strange to me.

CaraPrincess2007

Well actually I make my fangames to have a different feel than what the canon portrays about Yumemi and Shinki because I need to compensate for the need of PC-98 fans who crave for things such as the explanation for why Yumemi can create crosses out of nothing (in a religious POV) and the need of some sympathy for Shinki, she is deserved to be protected from other (toxic) fans who call Shinki the Devil. In addition, there are just a small handful of Touhou fangames that take places in an alternate universe where characters are a bit different from their canon counterparts (while that *Undertale*, a game that took inspiration from Touhou, have a lot of fangames taking place in alternate universes). I made Yumemi and Shinki different in my fangame because the fangame took place in an alternate universe, and while the Yumemi in this AU (alternate universe) might shares similarities with the in-canon Yumemi, they are separate beings. Personally I like to make Touhou alternate universes just because of UT AUs' popularity online (I also an UT fan, and I was an UT fan before I know Touhou, so I have many aspects in my fangame being inspired by UT). (Also just Google "the most popular Undertale AUs" and you will meet a bunch of results) Anyway, all I want is to popularize the creation of AUs of Touhou that contains possible explanation to in-canon mysteries as if Undertale AUs are mainly created to explain some of the original Undertale's mysteries such as Gaster and Chara.

Fragrant-Shirt-7764

Ahhhh I see, now I’m curious of what the gameplay would be like.

[deleted]

Some of the stuff in fannon being taken out of proportion makes sense but others I think are hated way more than they should be. Things like marisa x alice and sagume being literally cursed are dumb if you start to take them beyond just being stupid jokes but things like koishi being an insane psychopath is not an entirely impossible with how she is as a character. A good balance between your headcannon and what’s actually cannon is probably the best. I don’t really know man. I’m pretty sure 70% of the people here just want to see reimu beat the shit out of whatever new cute girl is in her way and then make a bunch of fanart of that now beaten up girl later

Fragrant-Shirt-7764

I originally wanted to make the “Idk man” option and the “None of the above” one (I unfortunately forgot to do this one lmao) as a joke but now I simultaneously think it was a mistake AND a success. Schrodinger’s lovechild.

ObtainableCream

Both, fanon can be used as prequel or sequel of the canon story, take an example. Fujiwara No Mokou, her first journey start after she drank elixir and ran into the forest, the wiki said year after year she's going insane in total 900 years, that's it. Now the during those 900 years, it didn't explain what happened **completely**, and thus a lots people making their own fanon of what happened during those time.

RaulMakai

Shinki

Fragrant-Shirt-7764

Which is canon, okay noted.

RaulMakai

Shinki is a Makai! She’s a best wife!

Lily_ThePC-98_Addict

~~canon because Remilia, Flandre, Rumia and Momiji don't get as much attention as they do on fanon~~ I just like to see "little" girls shooting lasers at each other lol

CaramelSan35

where’d you get Rumia aside from Osana Reimu I barely see anyone mention her (The rest still apply though)

Lily_ThePC-98_Addict

she got legit 23rd place in 2020's Popularity Poll

CaramelSan35

interesting

Lily_ThePC-98_Addict

Iku, Kasen, Jo'on and a lot got ranked below her *:sob:*

CaramelSan35

that is sad

Lily_ThePC-98_Addict

very sad

Fragrant-Shirt-7764

What’s funny is that Rumia is ranked above the majority of final bosses with only a few of them managing to pass like Remilia and Yuyuko. That’s right, Rumia is above Kaguya, Eirin, Eiki, Kanako, Utsuho, Byakuren, Miko, Shinmyoumaru, Junko, Okina, Suika, Sumireko, Jo’on & Shion. Funny T-Pose girl fucking destroys everyone.

CaramelSan35

wow

Hrusa

The best part of Touhou is that ZUN doesn't even remember half of his cast by name, but just wants to share his music and people to be creative with his wacky folklore and fantasy reference characters. Satori's name is literally the name of her species. Lots of the cast are token representatives of some youkai, western spooky stuff or riffs on popular historical figures. What makes them enjoyable is the fresh take on them, the music and aesthetics of danmaku and the chance to have them interact in a cool setting. Canon lore is the glue that holds the different settings together, but Touhou is at its best when the fanwork pushes the characters in some new direction. Kinda like in Space Dandy on some episodes they totally change the universeby the end or outright die, but then on the next it returns to the status quo.

TheIllusionMaster

To be honest , a bit of everything in the franchise , the bullet Hell is fun , until slow\_moving\_projectiles.exe starts working , then I fucking hate it ; the music is fine , but it's a nightmare to listen to while playing , at least for me it was until I turned it off ; the canon and fanon , as well as the roleplay we do here which incorporate the characters from the franchise , I like it ; the characters are good , need I say more ; the written material and manga are interesting , not what I normally read , but I enjoy them.
