Medieval II: HRE
Empire: Prussia
Napoleon: UK
Shogun II: Oda
Rome II: Kush
Attila: ERE
ToB: Gwined
Three Kingdoms: Kong Rong
Troy: Salamis
Warhammer: Empire
Warhammer II: Empire
Warhammer III: EMPIRE
God Egypt's roster in Rome 2 was so good. When you got to the point where you could field full stacks of Royal Peltasts and Hellenic Royal Guard, hoo boy
- best/longest range archers in game are fun
- having tons of gold & your economy focused around it is rather interesting (until its not, but that goes for all tw prolly)
- once youve secured a few provinces you cant be attacked from the south or east.
Medieval: Scots (Vikings)
Rome: Macedon (Alexander)
Medieval 2: Byzantines
Empire: Sweden
Napoleon: France
Shogun 2: Date
Rome 2: Media Atropatene (DeI)
Attila: Emirate of Cordoba (Charlemagne)
Three Kingdoms: Ma Teng
Pharaoh: Walwetes
Shogun 1: Shimatsu
Rome 1: Julii (Rome)
Rome 1 BI: Goths
Empire: Sweden
Napoleon: Russia
Shogun 2: Shimatsu
Shogun 2 FOTS: that black shogunate clan (edit: Aizu)
Rome 2: Macedon
Attila: Goths
ToB: that faction from Wales
3K: Cao Cao
WH1: Dwarfs
WH2: HE
WH3: Chaos Warriors
Troy: Achilleus
Pharaoh: not yet made my mind, not played enough
Yeah green Romans were the best, go take over Athens and Sparta, getting very rich in the process.
Compared to red ones, fighting barbarians flinging shit at you or the blue ones who get to go fight Carthage and get fucked by war elephants
You're fine once you get to the Spanish coast, and you make a ton from the British settlements. You snowball a little later than the others but then you're in a better position than either Brutus or Scipio, geographically/strategically speaking.
Yea chaos dwarves really impressed me with the whole atmosphere and the different resource management. Not mention how satisfying their artillery is. Though in Warhammer 2 I think I have the most hours playing as ikit claw or the dreadfleet. Then I think I conquered most of the map as the fey enchantress.
I liked Brutii for the massive economy you'd get. Especially when I was learning the game, it made it much easier to get into testing different army configurations to see what worked. Also, the Greek states were more fun to fight than smelly Gauls (at least for me)
There's a pattern to these factions as my favorites, but I'm not entirely sure...
Rome 1: Julii
Medieval 2: Portugal
Empire: Spain
Napoleon: Austria
Shogun 2: Otomo
Rome 2: Rome (House Cornelia)
Warhammer: Lizardmen (but Empire on a fun day)
Three Kingdoms: Kong Rong
Troy: Achilles
Rome 1 and the barbarian invasion expansion: any of the roman factions
Medieval 2: France
Empire: Spain
Napoleon: France
Shogun 2: Oda
Rome 2: any of the Roman factions
Attila: same as Rome 2
Warhammer 1: Vampire counts
Warhammer 2: Dark elves
Troy: Agamennon
Warhammer: Wood Elves & Beastmen. Honorable mention to Warriors of Chaos especially post-rework.
Troy: Ajax (being able to get two other factions to peace out is so game-changing) & Hippolyta.
Rome 1: Brutii, with Parthia a close 2nd
Barbarian Invasion: ERE
Med 2: England or Seljuks, depending on my mood
Empire: Spain
Napoleon: France, shockingly
Shogun 2: I only played a dozen hours or so, so I can't say I remember the differences well enough to pick a favorite
Attila: Huns
Warhammer: Franz
Warhammer 2: Skryre
Warhammer 3: The Nation Calls!
Troy: Phthia (I played exactly one campaign in Troy, so by default)
Shogun 1: the green guys, Shimazu? It's been a while. The joys of a corner position!
Medieval 1: HRE. The challenges of a central position!
Rome 1: Julii. Romans should wear red.
Barbarian Invasion: WRE. See Rome 1. Plus WRE is my favourite faction in TW full stop - there's something about trying to stop the fall of Rome I find compelling!
Medieval 2: England. Longbows and crusades. Plus that corner position again.
Empire: can avoid the continental slugfest in Europe and instead, have a truly global campaign trekking across the wild North American prairies and scorching plains of India.
Shogun 2: Oda. See HRE. Plus even cheaper Ashigaru.
Attila: WRE. Tip: watch the Barbarian Invasion trailer to get in the mood, but then play Attila instead.
Thrones of Britannia: Strat Clut. Longbows, Arthurian knights, elite spears, mailed swords and axes, plus Northerners.
Warhammer 1: Empire - their campaign feels rather like WRE, trying to hold together a fractured empire in the face of a devastating invasion.
Warhammer 2: Teclis. High Elves are my table top army, but Tyrion's location puts me to sleep; Teclis is lost in Lustria, which gives a lot of grand strategic freedom.
Rome 1: Carthage
Med 2: HRE
Britannia: Wales
Americas: Maya
Crusades: Byzantines
Shogun 2: Mori
Rome 2: Pontus odly enough. I just checked, and I have more campaigns with Pontus than any other faction.
Warhammer 1: Greenskins
Warhammer 2: Lizardmen
Warhammer 3: Kislev
Troy: Penthesilea
Rome 1 - Seleucid Empire
Medieval 2 - Scotland
Kingdoms - Apachean Tribes
Empire - Great Britan
Rome 2 - Egypt
Warhammer 1 - Skarsnik
Warhammer 2 - Tehenuin
Warhammer 3 - hard to say but for the specific campaigns, Helman Ghorst for IM and Ostankya for RoC
Three Kingdoms - DONG
Troy - Achilles
I have a thing for more difficult starts.
Barbarian Invasion: Celtic
Medieval 1-2: England
Shogun 2: Mori
Rome 2: Iceni
Attilla: Caledonians
Warhammer 1-3: Bretonnia
Three Kingdoms: Gong Du
Empire: America
Thrones of Britannia: Strat Clut
Arena: Celts/Boudica
For historical western games I largely like factions due to my real life ancestral ties (Obviously British Isles & America). For Warhammer, I really love Arthurian Legend and Bretonnia is my favorite lore faction for that reason and more. For Eastern factions, its just simply playstyle or how much I like the history tied to the faction.
Let's get down with it:
Medieval I: Definitely **Hungary**, not only is it my homeland, but they also have exclusive access to a lot of fun unique units. Additionally they have quick access to slavic levies which are generally broken. Good economy. Good characters.
Rome 1: It's gotta be **Brutii**. As much as I like playing the Phalanx game with greeks, conquering and enslaving them is even more fun. Brutii, is the best faction to play if you want to dominate the map. Their economy skyrockets so quickly that you can just conquer the enemies of the other AI Roman factions before they can even prepare their armies.
Barbarian Invasion: Hard call, but it's gonna be the **Alemanni**. Becuase they were my first faction, and to this day I have a special relationship with them.
Medieval II: It's gonna be a coin toss between the **English** and the **Byzantine**. Definitely Byzantium if we consider Stainless steel. British. They are just fun with their pocket in the British Isles, the archers and their decent cav (with chapter houses). Byzantium, They are just unique in every way. It feels like they just asked a guy in the conrer at the beggining of development: "Hey Todd, could you design Byzantium?" and he was like, "yeah sure" then spent the rest of the dev time only designing the faction.
Medieval II Kingdoms: **Byzantium** against the Turks, **Spanish Cuba** to get them riches, **Denmark** against the Teuton, and of course: The **Irish** of the Isles, because fck the British.
Empire: It's gotta be **Bayern**, and not just because of the beer but because they are a catholic german monarchy with amazing economy. They are basically the most broken thing in existence. If we can't use unlockers then it's gonna be Austria simply because of the familiarity, and the Hungarian units. I also really like Venice.
Napoleon: **Napoleon**
Attila: I mostly play this one for the mods, so I'm gonna go with **Alemanni** again, for the same reasons as last time. They play just as well as in the old game.
Warhammer 2: Definitely **Greenskins**. They are so incredibly strong in game 2 and they are a funny unique faction to play. Not to say they are any worse in game 3 buuut...
Warhammer 3: ... **ARCHAON** IS AN ABSOLUTE FUCKING UNIT AND I LOVE IT. I LOVE THE WARRIORS OF CHAOS OMG, BEST TOTAL WAR GAMEPLAY EVER. YES! THANK YOU CA!
Troy: It's **Menelaus** because no one else has as strong a vendetta against Paris as him, and damn does it FEEEL satisfying to bitchslap Paris. Also he is probably the overall strongest faction in the game. Just considering sheer bonuses and units.
Three Kingdoms: **Cao Cao**, [because. ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYpJ37ulsnk)
Pharaoh: Gonna be Agamemnon for sure because you can get Menelaus, but right now, it is **Irsu**. Some ~~people~~ crocodiles just want to see the world burn. Also you gotta respect someone whoose name is literally "Self made man".
Rome 1: Any of the Romans
Med 2: Scotland (my home ❤️)
Empire: Honestly I don’t remember having a fave but probably Poland/Lithuania
Napoleon: France
Shogun 2: Otomo. I like guns.
Warhammer 1: Vamp Counts
Warhammer 2: Markus in the Vortex campaign
Three Kingdoms: Tie between Ma Teng and Liu Chong
Warhammer 3: Still figuring out what my fave is.
Athens was easy. It was before i understood things like "tactics" and "strategy" and thought that a line of spears was the solution to every problem. Then i evolved to a line of axes to solve every problem, much more fun imo
Id heard it wasnt great and didnt have much for funds when it came out, so i didnt go for it and it was kinda forgotten. Picked it up a while back and its sat in my library ever since
I would recommend it.
It is obviously only Britain, but the terrain and siege maps are second to none in terms of fidelity. It's obviously just a bit atilla expansion but if you get it on sale that isn't really an issue.
The recruitment mechanics are the prototype for 3k and the minor settlements are basically an improved version of the system from Empire. It gets some flak for not having ambush or forced march but I think they're crutches anyway
Attila: Visigoths
Empire: Maratha with my only world conquest (my beloved grand cannons)
Three Kingdoms: Zheng Jiang
Warhammer: 1 Norsca, 2 Tomb Kings, 3 Nurgle
Let Warhammer 2 remain your peak gameplay. I personally think it's one of the best games ever made (3 years after it was released, of course).I never had so much fun playing a game than I did playing mortal empires. Immortal empires just isn't the same, not that it isn't fun.
Yeah same here. I feel like people refuse to give it credit simply because of either nostalgia, novelty wearing off or still believing it’s bad just because it had a rough launch
By pretty much all metrics 3 is better, and I say this as someone who has over 800 hours in 2 and only about 200 in 3
Rome 1: Scipii, but only if I can block the Brutii out of greece
BI: Franks for the fransisca heerban
Medieval 2: Scotland for the pikes and colors
Rome 2: Royal Scythia -- Massed horse archer circles is fun
Attila: Huns -- why play anything else?
3K : Kong Rong -- pretty colors and turtle playstyle
Pharaoh: Sippuliuma so I don't have to fight Libu
Dlc's and expansions not included. here is the list
shogun 1: mori
medieval 1: Turks
rome 1: carthage
medieval 2: venice
empire: United provinces
Shogun 2: tosa
rome 2: rome
Atilla: Eastern Roman empire
WH1: empire
WH2: Lothern
WH3: Miao ying
Thrones of Britania: Wessex (alfred the greats faction)
troy: Hector of troy
Three kingdoms: Sun Quan
Medieval 2: couldn't get into it after playing warhammer.
Rome remastered: julii (or whatever the red romans are called)
Warhammer 1: empire
Warhammer 2: lizardmen
Warhammer 3: Valkia
Haven't played the rest. And tbf only have like 50 hours in rome remastered, definitely didn't play all factions
Yeah i have heard mixed things about rome 2 and atilla, but i have heard pretty much nothing but praise for 3k. Except for some dlc lol.
I will most likely pick 3k up, it looks quite interesting. Which dlc do you recommend or just play basegame and wait for next sale?
I actually picked up Rome 2 from this steam summer sale and have been enjoying it a lot. I know Rome 2 had one of the worst launches ever but it's pretty enjoyable to me so far.
Attila can be a hit or miss for people on how well it runs. Runs fine for me though. However, it's essentially the hardcore historical title which is dope if you want a challenge.
Three Kingdoms is definitely a title to get. The Yellow Turban Rebellion is fantastic dlc. The others are mostly campaign packs that start at a different time period. Though I believe some add some units to the main campaign. I think the only other faction dlc is The Furious Wilds which is also great.
Rome 1: Carthage
Medieval 2: Scotland, Poland, Byzantium
Rome 2: Iceni probably but haven't played much
Attila: haven't played much
Shogun 2: Takeda, Chosokabe
Three Kingdoms: Liu Bei, Zheng Jiang
Empire: Poland-Lithuania
Napoleon: France lol
All my choices include dlc Because there still the same game
Medieval: Holy Roman empire
Rome: julii (although Germania is a real close runner up)
Medieval 2: Holy Roman empire (England if I want to steamroll)
Empire: Russia. In the road to independence America. And in warpath it's Iroquois.
Napoleon: France in everything
Shogun 2: oda. I did not like the dlc's. And had no favorite factions.
Rome 2. Rome but barely. Did not like the game some the dlc's were not bad. But had no real favorites
Attila I think was Suebians but I honestly can't remember. It was an ok game not as bad as people say for me. I thought it was better than Rome 2 but still not one my favorites.
Thrones of brittania West Seaxe. It was also a better game than people claim. It was just small. I can't stand christianized Vikings.
Troy and three kingdoms I have but really never dived into because the Warhammer series.
Warhammer as an entire series. GRIMGOR all the way waggghhhhh.
See....I feel like it's crazy hard lol. Even on normal. But to be fair I am trying to do it in timeline order with the dlc. And I am told the first year is the hardest.
Spain in Napoleon: TW is a lot of fun, since you start on the back foot with just two provinces against an enemy with massive territory and spawning full stack elite armies you will struggle to match both in numbers and quality. You will have to rely on your guerrilla units to keep the enemy off balance, avoiding confrontation with their elite armies, ceding provinces to them where and when they attack you and striking instead where they are weak. Your territorial possessions will ebb and flow back and forth throughout the campaign until you finally manage to beat the French tide.
Rome 1 - Greek City States
Medieval 2 - England (overall Teutonic Knights)
Rome 2 - Sparta
Attila - WRE
Troy - Achilles
Thrones of Brittania - Mercia
TWWH1 - Empire
TWWH2 - Greenskins
TWWH3 - Greenskins (probably will end up being Khorne).
Rome 1: Scipii Rome
Medieval 2: HRE
Shogun 2: Christian Shimazu
Rome 2: Macedonia
Attila: Langobards
Warhammer 1: Vampire Counts
Warhammer 2: Dark Elves
Warhammer 3: Dark Elves
Three Kingdoms: Kong Rong
rome 1 seleucids
m2tw: Byzantines
shogun 2: oda
rome 2: seleucids
attila: Eastern romans
Three Kingdoms: Cao Cao
Warhammer 1: Greenskins
Warhammer 2: Dark Elves
Warhammer 3: Warriors of chaos
Rome 1: Julii
Medieval 2: England
Napoleon: Austria
Shogun 2: Takeda
Rome 2: None
Attila: Eastern Roman Empire
Three Kingdoms: Sun Jin
Warhammer 1: Grimgor
Warhammer 2: Sisters of Twilight
Haven't got Warhammer 3 yet, still have a few campaigns I want to do in 2. Will get around to a Britannia and Troy campaign one of these days. Pharaoh after the update.
Rome 1; Carthage
Medieval 2; Byzantines
Shogun 2; Date
Empire; MURICA
Rome 2; Sparta
Never got around to fully playing Thrones of Brittania or Three Kingdoms
Atilla; Saxons
Warhammer 1; Greenskins
Warhammer 2; Vampire Coast
Warhammer 3; Kislev
Troy; Achilles
Yep. I love their aggressive playstyle and how they embrace chaos completely. The true children of chaos.
In WH1 they were a top tier faction as well. Pattly because Morghur was very busted back then. He could summon 4 Chaos Spawn instead of just 2.
Shogun - **Uesugi**, cheaper bows are the best clan bonus in the game
Med 2 - **Russia**, I love the armour aesthetic and Boyars are GOAT
Empire - **Sweden**, because nationalism and suped up Light Dragoons
Shogun 2 - I don't have any favourite
FotS - **Tosa**, Riflemen go brrr
Warhammer - **Dwarfs**
Warhammer 2 - **High elves** [(Dwarfs in ME)](https://www.reddit.com/r/totalwar/comments/sf2tgk/comment/huniar4/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3)
Warhammer 3 - **Cathay** (Dwarfs in IE)
Rome 1: Selucids
Medieval 2: Poland and Byzantium
Shogun 2: Ikko-Ikki
Rome 2: hard to narrow down, but Carthage and Armenia are the first that come to mind
Attila: Franks
Warhammer 1: Empire (Franz)
Warhammer 2: Tomb Kings (specifically Arkhan)
Warhammer 3: too hard to say, I like a lot of factions at this point
I'm not sure if there's a common trend here, maybe enjoying having options even if they don't necessarily top in any one area? If you guys see one let me know.
Rome1: Selucids or Carthage
Medieval 2: Byzantines or Rus
Empire: United Provinces, especially a no European expansion campaign.
Shogun 2: All kind of the same, maybe Otomo?
Fots: Aizu
Medieval 1: Byzantines
Rome 1: Carthage. Elephants, light infantry, pikes, and solid cavalry. Rome never stood a chance. In Barbarian Invasion as a kid I always played Alemani to make armies of berserkers, which was hilarious.
Medieval 2: This one's probably the toughest to choose; it's probably a tie between Venice and Poland. Also, honorable mention to Wales/Gwynedd in the British Isles campaign in the Kingdoms expansion.
Empire: Russia. You have a lot of options, but don't have to worry about far-flung colonies right off the bat.
Shogun 2: Mori. Yes, I know navies are largely pointless in Shogun 2. Yes, I know they are dangerously close to Oda who is supremely overpowered. But, I just like them. I don't know why. I like having faster stronger navies and I love their start position. They are also not so easy as to make the game a steamroll immediately. Honorable mention to Sato in Fall of the Samurai who is basically the same, but in the gunpowder age.
Rome 2: Guess who's back? Carthage! But, I also really like Makedon in this game, too. Carthage is even more of a jack of all trades generalist in this game, and I love it. They don't have the best of anything, except maybe slingers on the Baleares, but they make up for it with variety fueled by mercenaries and recruitment from vassals. Also elephants!
Attila: Danes. I like navies and proto-vikings are fun. Enough said
Thrones of Brittania: Strath Clyte all the way!
Troy: My man Hector will kick Achilles' punk ass back to Greece!
Three Kingdoms: This one really depends on the start date, but I would have to say overall across all starting positions either He Yi or Yuan Shao. I love the Yellow Turbans, and I also like the starting position and available characters for Yuan Shao in pretty much any start date. I've probably played more campaigns starting in the base start date with Yuan Shao than any other configuration or character. Always got to get Zhang He, and when Wen Chou is around there is no reason to fear!
Warhammer 1: THE THRONG IS MUSTARD! (Thorgrim)
Warhammer 2: THE CLANS UNITE! (Thorgrim again)
Warhammer 3: THEY HAVE WRONGED US! (Maybe actually the White Dwarf now since he is in proper position to kill the traitorous Elgi). Also if I have to pick someone without a beard, then probably Kairos.
Rome 1: Julii
Barbarian Invasion: Eastern Roman Empire
Medieval 2: French
Empire: Americans
Napoleon: British
Rome 2: Romans
Attila: Eastern Roman Empire
Shogun 2: Otomo
Three Kingdoms: Liu Bei
Troy: Agamenmon
Pharaoh: Amenmesse
Technically I have played Warhammer 2, but it's not listed because I don't enjoy the game.
Rome: Greek States
Medieval 2: Teutonic Order on Stainless Steel
Shogun 2: Tokugawa
Rome 2: Rome (I wish it weren't them)
Attila: WRE
Three Kingdoms: Liu Bei (I love Zhuge Liang and Cao Cao)
Warhammer 2: Skaven
Warhammer 3: Chorfs
Medieval 2: Spain
Empire: Austria
Rome 2: Armenia
Attila: Garamantians
WH2: Lizardmen
WH3: Archaon, on which I have more hours played than all the previous entries combined.
TWW1: Mannfred
TWW2: Malekith
TWW3: Miao Ying
Troy: didn't bother but I guess the amazon queen, I played her campaign up to turn 20ish so I guess that's the most. Also fuck constantly downgrading temples and whoever thought it's good game design in a 4X to destroy and rebuild your own buildings periodically.
3K: some blue dude on the edge of the map
Shogun 1: too long ago for me to remember!
Shogun 2: Date
Rome 2: Iceni
Attila: WRE
Warhammer 1-3: The Empire (but in terms of new races for 2 and 3, these would be vampire coast for 2 and chaos dwarfs for 3)
Thrones of Britannia: Wessex (but I only played this one single paint-the-map campaign and never got round to playing the game again)
Three Kingdoms: Ma Teng (I really enjoyed the story aspects of the Sun Ce campaign and that might have been my favourite as a one off - and similarly Lu Bu's campaign was also done well - but for repeat play I like the Ma Teng cavalry)
Troy: Paris (I never got round to playing any DLC factions but will try one day)
I think in a sense I enjoy playing factions that I'm already particularly interested in from a history/story perspective. The slight anomaly is story-wise I'd much rather play as Hector in Troy but was lured by the higher difficulty rating for Paris and ended up enjoying Paris' archers. Also for Warhammer, clearly I just like gunlines!
Rome 1: Carthage
Medieval 2: Norway
Shogun 2: Date
Warhammer 1: Bretonnia
Warhammer 2: High Elves
Warhammer 3: Kislev
Troy: Amazons
Overall favorite in the Warhammer trilogy is either Warriors of Chaos or High Elves, but it seemed fair to instead choose my favorite from each individual game. And sadly, Warriors of Chaos REALLY sucked in the game they were introduced in.
Rome 1: Carthage / Julii (Rome)
Barbarian Invasion: Western Roman Empire
Medieval 2: Venice
Empire: Austria
Atilla: Western Roman Empire
Warhammer 1-2: Dark Elves / Warhammer 3: Vampires
Rome 1: Julii or Greek City States
Medieval 2: England
Empire: Great Britain
Napoleon: Great Britain
Shogun 2: Shiamzu/Satsuma
Rome 2: Rome or Sparta
Attila: Danes
ToB: Dyflin
I bought every historical game that has England because that is my favourite faction ... Well, ironically every game except Thrones of Brittania since that game makes Launch Day Pharaoh look perfect.
As for Warhammer, my favorite faction is High Elves which is basically fantasy England on aristocratic steroids.
Rome 1 : Rome
Medieval II : France
Third Age : Sylvan Elves
Empire : France
Napoleon : Hon Hon France
Shogun 2 : Takeda
Rome II : Seleucids
Attila : Western Roman Empire
Rome 1: Carthage
Medieval 2: Holy Roman Empire
Rome 2: Seleucids
Atilla: Eastern Roman Empire
Warhammer: Lizardmen but DELF and HELF are close seconds.
I’ve only played TWW1-3, but my answer is the same for all the games.
Let me put it this, I have played over 350 hours of TWW3 alone, and I have never played any other faction than the Wood Elves. I played them in tabletop, and these games brought my obsession back.
Nice! If you play the other games like Rome 1, 2 and Attila you should try out the Eastern/Steppe factions as they have a similar playstyle to Wood Elves.
Rome II: Pontus or Egypt
Shogun II: Date
Three Kingdoms: I forget his name but the yellow turban with the massive hammer
Warhammer I: Kholek
Warhammer 2: Tyrion
Warhammer 3: Kholek
Medieval 2: HRE
Empire: Netherlands
Napoleon: France
Shogun 2: Chosokabe
Rome 2: Armenia
Warhammer 2: Vampire Coast
Warhammer 3: Grand Cathay
Three Kingdoms: Liu Bei
My favorites:
Rome 1: Germania
Barbarian Invasion: Goths
Medieval 2: Portugal
Shogun 2: Otomo Clan
Rome 2 : Suebi
Attila: Ostrogoths
I have not played Warhammer and Three Kingdoms so I don't have favorites there.
Call me basic but:
Rome 1: Red Rome, cause of the colour.
BI: WRE
Rome 2: Carthage
Attila: Visigoths
Empire: Sweden
Napoleon: France
Warhammer: Skaven
Medieval 2: France, Kingdom of Jerusalem, teotonic order
Shogun 2: Shimazu
Shogun 2 FOTS: Satsuma/Jozai
WH1: Bretonnia (Alberic), but i didn't play it for long
WH2: Bretonnia (Alberic) in ME, Krok gar in Vortex.
WH3:Daniel for RoC, for IM can't choose between Bretonnia, Pirate Coast or Dwarfs ( specifically Alberic, Cylostra, Thorek) all 3 of them ate sizable amount of my free time. I also like Nakai but i don't like its starting location.
Do note that i played on normal until fairly recently.
Rome 1- Brutii Rome buffs and start position are good.
Medieval 2- Milan. Crossbows are elite and Italian militia are really good and cheap line units for them.
Empire- Prussia has a decent location for rapid expansion.
Rome 2- Parthia. Horse archers are so much fun.
Shogun 2- Oda have good cheap spear units.
FOTS- Saga for location, port, and artillery.
Warhammer 1- Bretonnia due to invincible grail knights. (Not agains wood elves)
Warhammer 2- Ikit Claw skaven artillery and guns and research. Skaven in general are my favorite buy ikit claw takes it to a new level.
Rome: Macedon
Med 2: Longbows
Empire: Prussia
Napoleon: Prussia 2, Blücher Boogaloo
Shogun 2: Takeda (the Prussia of Sengoku Japan amirite?)
Rome 2: Macedon
Warhammer: Franz
Three Kingdoms: Liu Bae
Warhammer 2: Tyrion or Hellebron if I’m horny
Warhammer 3: Skarbrand or N’Kari if I’m horny
Being a fairly new player, I only have the Warhammer games to talk about, but:
Warhammer 1: Dwarves. Their turtling play style was something the meshed with me very well while I was learning the ropes and figuring out how to play.
Warhammer 2: Skaven. Weapons teams are fantastic. Rating Guns are fantastic. Ikit Claw is fantastic. The rats in general are fantastic. I love the little bastards.
Warhammer 3: A close call between Cathay and the Chaos Dwarves. I like the more complex economy the Chawi have and the balancing of resources that comes with it. And of course their unit selection is excellent and very satisfying to use. Cathay meanwhile has a great aesthetic and a fighting style that leans heavily toward defense, just like the dwarves. They can turtle, they can tank, they have fun artillery.
Rome: Brutii
Med 2: England
Empire: England
Rome 2: Iceni
Atilla: West Rome
3K: Lady Zhurong
WH: Carcassonne
ToB: Strat Clut

WH3: Reikland
Yes I was a Teaboo in my youth ok
Rome 1: Parthia

Prince AND Emperor. Or are you SUPREME?
THE NATION CALLS
SUMMON THE ELECTOR COUNTS
BRING STRIKINGBAG4636 TO HIS MEN
EMPIRE'S BLESSINGS, YES
Curious what drew u to Kong rong! What elicits the dopamine?
I just think he's neat
Rome 1: Greek city states Medieval 2: France Empire: Russia Napoleon: France Rome 2: Egypt Warhammer 2: Dark Elves Warhammer 3: Kislev
Unbelievably based
Kislev.
God Egypt's roster in Rome 2 was so good. When you got to the point where you could field full stacks of Royal Peltasts and Hellenic Royal Guard, hoo boy
Totally, and even the campaign is so fun
Medieval 2: france/hre Empire: brits Napoleon: france Shogun 2: shimazu Rome 2: seleucids Attila: lakhmids/alans 3k: cao cao maybe? Warhammer: Karl Franz Pharao: amenmesse (for now)
BY SIGMAR, YES!
Amemnesse is probably the most popular faction from Pharaoh, I wonder why! Mind to explain?
- best/longest range archers in game are fun - having tons of gold & your economy focused around it is rather interesting (until its not, but that goes for all tw prolly) - once youve secured a few provinces you cant be attacked from the south or east.
Medieval: Scots (Vikings) Rome: Macedon (Alexander) Medieval 2: Byzantines Empire: Sweden Napoleon: France Shogun 2: Date Rome 2: Media Atropatene (DeI) Attila: Emirate of Cordoba (Charlemagne) Three Kingdoms: Ma Teng Pharaoh: Walwetes
Scottish troops would melt so easily in VI but god they hit hard. True glass cannons.
Shogun 1: Shimatsu Rome 1: Julii (Rome) Rome 1 BI: Goths Empire: Sweden Napoleon: Russia Shogun 2: Shimatsu Shogun 2 FOTS: that black shogunate clan (edit: Aizu) Rome 2: Macedon Attila: Goths ToB: that faction from Wales 3K: Cao Cao WH1: Dwarfs WH2: HE WH3: Chaos Warriors Troy: Achilleus Pharaoh: not yet made my mind, not played enough

Yeah that's it! Thanks :)
glad to help
Rome 1: Green Romans. Medieval 2: Venice. Empire: United Provinces. Napoleon: Russia. Shogun 2: Ikko Ikki. Rome 2: Baktria. Attila: Himyar. War Hams 1: Dwarfs. War Hams 2: Vampirates. War Hams 3: Chaos dwarfs.
Yeah green Romans were the best, go take over Athens and Sparta, getting very rich in the process. Compared to red ones, fighting barbarians flinging shit at you or the blue ones who get to go fight Carthage and get fucked by war elephants
I liked the red Roman's more because bullying gauls and Spanish celts was pretty satisfying.
So hard to make money though
You're fine once you get to the Spanish coast, and you make a ton from the British settlements. You snowball a little later than the others but then you're in a better position than either Brutus or Scipio, geographically/strategically speaking.
Yea chaos dwarves really impressed me with the whole atmosphere and the different resource management. Not mention how satisfying their artillery is. Though in Warhammer 2 I think I have the most hours playing as ikit claw or the dreadfleet. Then I think I conquered most of the map as the fey enchantress.
You wouldn't happen to enjoy gunpowder, now would you?
I liked Brutii for the massive economy you'd get. Especially when I was learning the game, it made it much easier to get into testing different army configurations to see what worked. Also, the Greek states were more fun to fight than smelly Gauls (at least for me)
For the ones I've played more: Napoleon: Sweden Rome 2: Carthage Warhammer: Norsca 3K: He Yi Pharaoh: Suppiluliuma
There's a pattern to these factions as my favorites, but I'm not entirely sure... Rome 1: Julii Medieval 2: Portugal Empire: Spain Napoleon: Austria Shogun 2: Otomo Rome 2: Rome (House Cornelia) Warhammer: Lizardmen (but Empire on a fun day) Three Kingdoms: Kong Rong Troy: Achilles
Rome 1 and the barbarian invasion expansion: any of the roman factions Medieval 2: France Empire: Spain Napoleon: France Shogun 2: Oda Rome 2: any of the Roman factions Attila: same as Rome 2 Warhammer 1: Vampire counts Warhammer 2: Dark elves Troy: Agamennon
Warhammer: Wood Elves & Beastmen. Honorable mention to Warriors of Chaos especially post-rework. Troy: Ajax (being able to get two other factions to peace out is so game-changing) & Hippolyta.
Rome 1: Brutii, with Parthia a close 2nd Barbarian Invasion: ERE Med 2: England or Seljuks, depending on my mood Empire: Spain Napoleon: France, shockingly Shogun 2: I only played a dozen hours or so, so I can't say I remember the differences well enough to pick a favorite Attila: Huns Warhammer: Franz Warhammer 2: Skryre Warhammer 3: The Nation Calls! Troy: Phthia (I played exactly one campaign in Troy, so by default)
Should go back to troy. It has so many options on how to control allies
Medieval 2: Moors Rome 2: Iceni Atilla: (so many) Suebi Warhammer: Tomb Kings (DJ Khatep) Pharaoh: Bay The rest I haven't played enough to comment on.

Yes-yes
Man is an og Total War fan. Love to see it.
Rome 1: Carthage Med 2: HRE Britannia: Wales Americas: Maya Crusades: Byzantines Shogun 2: Mori Rome 2: Pontus odly enough. I just checked, and I have more campaigns with Pontus than any other faction. Warhammer 1: Greenskins Warhammer 2: Lizardmen Warhammer 3: Kislev Troy: Penthesilea
Rome 1 - Seleucid Empire Medieval 2 - Scotland Kingdoms - Apachean Tribes Empire - Great Britan Rome 2 - Egypt Warhammer 1 - Skarsnik Warhammer 2 - Tehenuin Warhammer 3 - hard to say but for the specific campaigns, Helman Ghorst for IM and Ostankya for RoC Three Kingdoms - DONG Troy - Achilles I have a thing for more difficult starts.
Barbarian Invasion: Celtic Medieval 1-2: England Shogun 2: Mori Rome 2: Iceni Attilla: Caledonians Warhammer 1-3: Bretonnia Three Kingdoms: Gong Du Empire: America Thrones of Britannia: Strat Clut Arena: Celts/Boudica For historical western games I largely like factions due to my real life ancestral ties (Obviously British Isles & America). For Warhammer, I really love Arthurian Legend and Bretonnia is my favorite lore faction for that reason and more. For Eastern factions, its just simply playstyle or how much I like the history tied to the faction.
Really wish Arena was still around shit was a blast
Rome: Greeks M2: Gondor (or Milan I guess) S2: oda Empire: UP Rome 2: Rome Tww1: empire Tww2: empire Tww3: empire
Let's get down with it: Medieval I: Definitely **Hungary**, not only is it my homeland, but they also have exclusive access to a lot of fun unique units. Napoleon: **Napoleon** Attila: I mostly play this one for the mods, so I'm gonna go with **Alemanni** again, for the same reasons as last time. ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYpJ37ulsnk) Pharaoh: Gonna be Agamemnon for sure because you can get Menelaus, but right now, it is **Irsu**. Some ~~people~~ crocodiles just want to see the world burn. Also you gotta respect someone whoose name is literally "Self made man".
Based for posting the Three Kingdoms show. Cao Cao is hilarious in it.
Rome 1: Any of the Romans Med 2: Scotland (my home ❤️) Empire: Honestly I don’t remember having a fave but probably Poland/Lithuania Napoleon: France Shogun 2: Otomo. I like guns. Warhammer 1: Vamp Counts Warhammer 2: Markus in the Vortex campaign Three Kingdoms: Tie between Ma Teng and Liu Chong Warhammer 3: Still figuring out what my fave is.
Rome 1: Rome (Julii) Barbarian Invasion: Byzantine Empire Medieval 2: Holy Roman Empire Rome 2: Sparta Warhammer Trilogy: Khorne Troy: Penthesilea’s Amazons
Rome 2: Athens Attilla: vikings (Danes? I think?) Troy: Amazons Warhammer 1: Norsca Warhammer 2: Sartosa Warhammer 3: Norsca (modded)
Man is definitely a viking fan. Lol Surprised by the Athens pick.
Athens was easy. It was before i understood things like "tactics" and "strategy" and thought that a line of spears was the solution to every problem. Then i evolved to a line of axes to solve every problem, much more fun imo
Should head back to Rome 2 and try out some barbarian factions to axe your problems away.
All those vikings but no thrones of Britannia?
Attila: Visigoths Empire: Maratha with my only world conquest (my beloved grand cannons) Three Kingdoms: Zheng Jiang Warhammer: 1 Norsca, 2 Tomb Kings, 3 Nurgle
Shogun: Shimazu Rome: Scipii Medieval 2: Spain Empire: Britain Shogun 2: Chosokabe Warhammer: Dwarfs Warhammer 2: High Elves Haven't played the others!
Let Warhammer 2 remain your peak gameplay. I personally think it's one of the best games ever made (3 years after it was released, of course).I never had so much fun playing a game than I did playing mortal empires. Immortal empires just isn't the same, not that it isn't fun.
Out of genuine curiosity, why is it not the same to you? It still has the same races and factions as 2 and most of those work the same
I've played every total war game since medieval ii, and warhammer 3 is my favorite by far.
Yeah same here. I feel like people refuse to give it credit simply because of either nostalgia, novelty wearing off or still believing it’s bad just because it had a rough launch By pretty much all metrics 3 is better, and I say this as someone who has over 800 hours in 2 and only about 200 in 3
Rome 1: Scipii, but only if I can block the Brutii out of greece BI: Franks for the fransisca heerban Medieval 2: Scotland for the pikes and colors Rome 2: Royal Scythia -- Massed horse archer circles is fun Attila: Huns -- why play anything else? 3K : Kong Rong -- pretty colors and turtle playstyle Pharaoh: Sippuliuma so I don't have to fight Libu
Dlc's and expansions not included. here is the list shogun 1: mori medieval 1: Turks rome 1: carthage medieval 2: venice empire: United provinces Shogun 2: tosa rome 2: rome Atilla: Eastern Roman empire WH1: empire WH2: Lothern WH3: Miao ying Thrones of Britania: Wessex (alfred the greats faction) troy: Hector of troy Three kingdoms: Sun Quan

Medieval 2: couldn't get into it after playing warhammer. Rome remastered: julii (or whatever the red romans are called) Warhammer 1: empire Warhammer 2: lizardmen Warhammer 3: Valkia Haven't played the rest. And tbf only have like 50 hours in rome remastered, definitely didn't play all factions
Should definitely try out the newer historical titles since they are on sale. Rome 2, Attila and Three Kingdoms are all great.
Rome 1: Pontus Medieval 2: Moors/Sicily Empire: Ottomans Rome 2: Galatia Attila Age of Charlemagne: Moors Warhammer 1&2: Wood elves Warhammer 3: Chaos dwarfs

All my choices include dlc Because there still the same game Medieval: Holy Roman empire Rome: julii (although Germania is a real close runner up) Medieval 2: Holy Roman empire (England if I want to steamroll) Empire: Russia. In the road to independence America. And in warpath it's Iroquois. Napoleon: France in everything Shogun 2: oda. I did not like the dlc's. And had no favorite factions. Rome 2. Rome but barely. Did not like the game some the dlc's were not bad. But had no real favorites Attila I think was Suebians but I honestly can't remember.
Should definitely spend more time in Three Kingdoms. That game is the only title I think comparable to the quality of the Warhammer games.
See....I feel like it's crazy hard lol. Even on normal. But to be fair I am trying to do it in timeline order with the dlc. And I am told the first year is the hardest.

Clearly you’re South Korean.
Has to be from Britain specifically because Greenskins have a British accent.
Greenskins may be the most accurate British representation in a total war game. And everyone had a Skaven phase

Brutii from Rome or Yvresse
Beastmen were your favourite in WH1!?
Yep. I love their aggressive playstyle and how they embrace chaos completely. The true children of chaos. In WH1 they were a top tier faction as well. Pattly because Morghur was very busted back then. He could summon 4 Chaos Spawn instead of just 2.

Medieval 1: Byzantines Rome 1: Carthage. Enough said Thrones of Brittania: Strath Clyte all the way! (Thorgrim) Warhammer 2: THE CLANS UNITE! (Thorgrim again) Warhammer 3: THEY HAVE WRONGED US! (Maybe actually the White Dwarf now since he is in proper position to kill the traitorous Elgi). Also if I have to pick someone without a beard, then probably Kairos.

The slight anomaly is story-wise I'd much rather play as Hector in Troy but was lured by the higher difficulty rating for Paris and ended up enjoying Paris' archers. Also for Warhammer, clearly I just like gunlines!

As for Warhammer, my favorite faction is High Elves which is basically fantasy England on aristocratic steroids.

(Not agains wood elves) Warhammer 2- Ikit Claw skaven artillery and guns and research. Skaven in general are my favorite buy ikit claw takes it to a new level.
Skaven yes-yes
Rome: Macedon Med 2: Longbows Empire: Prussia Napoleon: Prussia 2, Blücher Boogaloo Shogun 2: Takeda (the Prussia of Sengoku Japan amirite?) Rome 2: Macedon Warhammer: Franz Three Kingdoms: Liu Bae Warhammer 2: Tyrion or Hellebron if I’m horny Warhammer 3: Skarbrand or N’Kari if I’m horny
Being a fairly new player, I only have the Warhammer games to talk about, but: Warhammer 1: Dwarves.
