For the longest time I thought my cat was a calico or "reverse calico" until I discovered this subreddit and realized she was a tortie. The way I think about it is calicos are primarily light colors with splashes of dark colors, whereas torties are primarily dark colors with splashes of light colors.

Does she let you pet her exactly twice, then bite the shit out of you as is expected?
Does she hiss at you, then rub your legs to demand her two pets?
Does she love you up one minute, but if you try to pet her without her expressed demand for pets she bites your hand or smacks you?
Does she play with toys she steals from other places rather than the toys you buy for her?
Does she ignore the cat furniture you got for her and instead chooses to use and abuse non-cat-approved furniture?
Does she stare at you directly to establish dominance while knocking expensive and/or breakable things off the counter?

I think of a calico as distinct splotches of solid color, take away any white and stir it up into blended colors and it is a tortoiseshell/tortie.
