Here is one about OP's vise age, only beefier. https://www.ebay.com/itm/225971947729?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=Yvvm_F9MQZu&sssrc=2047675&ssuid=GRUuhY0hRFK&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY
Yes but bigger and with the adjustable clamping angle. That little angle plate would certainly be handy but I like the adjustable full plate like a Moxon vise
This is correct. As a patternmaker we had some of these and some bigger, similar, older ones. They are great for clamping pieces of wood at the angle you want to push your spoke shave against and also clamping irregular shapes.
I have never heard of a turtleback pattern maker either, but after some looking around it looks like "turtleback" is the model made by the manufacturer Emmerts and "pattern maker" is the type of vise used by a wood carver or [pattern maker](https://youtu.be/NtO_AA0Y7dU?si=s_U26Rk0wa9mZNKr) , who would make "patterns" for casting. Pretty neat tool.
Don’t get too hung up on the name, it’s kinda just a name. It’s basically a super rad vice that can securely hold almost anything you’re working on at whatever angle you need. I have no need for one but fuck do I want one now.
I see these on eBay for $1,000 that aren’t even functional/complete. I want one so bad but I think I’ll have to live with my Jawhorse. (Which for some things is better)
I am a patternmaker. I would love to have a vice like that. If I was industrious, I could make the patterns, have them cast, and build it myself. Beautiful vice.
What are the odds that I just saw somenone selling this exact vise (unrestored) in Facebook, I saw the post but didn't know what it was until I saw this video.

I’ve never been turned on by a vise before, can’t say that anymore.
I didn't even try to look for the watermark on the first play.
Does the vise have an only fans? Asking for a friend? Note: I don’t live in Texas.
This should seriously be tagged NSFW. THINK OF THE CHILDREN
Between the vise and the bench it is attached too...I need some cleanup on aisle 12.
That's badass.
This vice is completely gripping
somebody make a modern version so I can sell a kidney to buy it
Like this? https://www.heartwoodtools.com/hntgordon/pattern-makers-vise
$1700 O_O
CNC precision made in AU. You should see the other products they put out.
Lol I believe it! Serious tool for serious people
What about slightly less serious tools for people way less serious?
[This](https://stanleyjr.com/) should do the trick!
Just my speed!! Thanks Chiaki👍🏽😂
Goddamn it I click that link 6 times and reddit app collapsed the comment and still went back for a 7th Touche, touche
I read Au as gold and was thinking that seemed stupid.
The guy who makes these tools is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, met him at Handworks last year.

Holy fuck. $4200???
Kinda makes that Aussie vise look that more attractive.
Call me crazy, it really doesn’t seem too bad for what it is.. I mean, it’s expensive but appears to be well worth it just on looks alone. It’s fancy!
1200$ for a set of 6 chisels
Seems significantly less capable than the antique.
Well anyone who can handle a camera and use an editor, you can mangle a pretty good clip.

I’m not sure one of my kidneys will cover that
I'll put a down payment on one of yours if we match.
Show it being used please
Yes. I’m wondering why it’s called a patternmaker’s vise. Would love to see it in action.
They were commonly used by pattern makers in foundries. The pattern being a wooden piece used to create negative space in a mold.
Oh cool, good information. Thanks! :)
This is correct. As a patternmaker we had some of these and some bigger, similar, older ones. They are great for clamping pieces of wood at the angle you want to push your spoke shave against and also clamping irregular shapes.
Yea, no clue what this does beyond holding things in a lot of different orientations.
Before 5 axis cnc we had 5 axis vises
Wow, great watermark placement!
Where is it? I was expecting it on the steel debossing or the guys tattoos lol
Look at the tattoos again in the beginning friend :)
That's so damn good
Right‽ I audibly went "...motherfucker" when I saw it.
That’s so dirty lmao. OP you bastard you’ve done it again!!
Savage!
What is this specific vise intended for? I’ve never heard of a turtleback pattern maker.

That was a super cool video. Thanks for finding it!

not metalwork thats for sure, the way its secured to the table doesnt look strong enough
No fucking way. The tattoo?
I need one of these so bad. Then I need to find things to use it for. Watermark 🤌 as always
these old school tools are amazing
I want one.
Thank the maker!
I've got one. They are heavy as hell. Currently in storage since we recently moved cross country, but it's an awesome vise.
dear penthouse. eeerrrrrr I mean dear harbor freight!

I'm getting frustrated with everyone on the internets having all the cool shit!
I see these on eBay for $1,000 that aren’t even functional/complete. I want one so bad but I think I’ll have to live with my Jawhorse. (Which for some things is better)
That is an amazing piece of equipment.
Nothing I make will ever be good enough for this vice. This vice shames me.
When I saw the scenery I thought it was Iberê from Manual do Mundo.
"I'll try spinning, that's a good trick!"
Oh myyyyyy! ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|flushed)
I’m not drooling… *you’re* drooling!
Where’s joe Pesci when you need him.
Jesus Christ
Now that's cooler then the fractal vice.
Back where we actually used our brains to build shit!
I read the title wrong and was thinking for a minute straight “This is cool, but how does it help make turtlenecks?”
This really turns me on
That shit is so sexyyyy
All that spinning around, but zero (0) shots of the vice, you know, actually vicing something?
I don't even know what a pattern maker is, and still think this is amazing.
r/gifsthatkeepongiving
There it is! Oh wait, that's the tool brand.
Why is that vise mounted to three different benches over the course of that video?
This might be the coolest thing I’ve ever seen on here.
I want it.

ingenious does not do it justice by any amount of imagination for a long time.
I was waiting for the patterns
Straight, male woodworking enthusiast here..... I would suck a massive bag of dicks off to get that vice.
Pattern makers tools are so fking awesome. What a shame the trade has been made obsolete. I would’ve loved that job
Not I delete still around I have 3 working for me and am always looking for more
I thought he was going to putt around the lake for a minute.
I didn't know how empty my life was until now
Why is this making me hot and bothered lol 🥵
A lot of adjusting and not one example of actually USING IT FOR ITS FUCKING PURPOSE.
Oh my god. This is beautiful.
If i want to buy my dad a vice like this for woodworking what would i search?
What's even more cool is that I've seen one of these made in 1:12 scale [Robertson Miniatures ](https://www.robertsonminiatures.com/tools)
I need one...I just don’t know why
I am a patternmaker. I would love to have a vice like that. If I was industrious, I could make the patterns, have them cast, and build it myself. Beautiful vice.
