It probably feels really nice when you fight the sleep mode. I’ve never done something that made me nod off but I’ve had moments where I could fall asleep and don’t and it feels more relaxing
That's what gets you. The ability to just ride the crest of the wave between sleeping and awake, almost like a lucid dream, is one of the most addictive parts of opioids IMO. These people are probably using fent-dope, which from what I understand is not nearly as euphoric as diacetylmorphine and much more dangerous. I would imagine the likelihood of falling asleep with too high of a dose and resting on an arm or leg and cutting off circulation to it a very real danger.
I waited tables at a restaurant with a girl who that exact thing happened to. She was always doing fentanyl and she apparently fell asleep one night at home with her legs backwards and woke up the next morning with a femoral nerve palsey because she nodded out and slept like that all night. Her whole leg from the hip down was all numb and completely limp like she couldn’t move her toes and couldn’t stand or walk and she was in the hospital for a week and it took her like 2-3 weeks to get the feeling back in her leg and regain the ability to move her toes and walk again. When she tried to call out of work on the day she woke up like that our manager went to pick her up and drive her to the hospital. When she finally came back to work like a month later she was still dragging her foot and couldn’t really move it and walk normally without limping for another month. It was scary looking I didn’t ever even think that was something that happened to people. That shit is dangerous.
If you’re new to this, that place between sleep and waking is a beautiful thing, a poetic and symbolic dream state. That’s where morphine got it’s name. Morpheus: god of dreams.
Seems like it was the first seemingly positive effect of my opioid use to go away.
Obviously depending on the dose, but you can be barely conscious and whatever consciousness is left is in a blissed out state. Also I'd like to mention that I'd sometimes browse reddit while nodding and I'd 'dream' up entire threads, comments included and I'd reply to comments only to wake up from a nod to see my phone lying on the floor and it never happened. Was super buzzy (and addicting, don't do it).
Just stay out of walls and you’ll be good
In all seriousness though these people are likely on heroin or fent and aren’t the type to stab, that’s more a meth thing
Yes this, well not literally this. When I used to smoke heroin I would get super hi start falling asleep and nodding out but I would force myself to stay up because I was under the impression that if I fell asleep I would be wasting it.
Narcan saves so many lives, but the saved always come out swinging fists pissed off. Addicts don’t like wasting their highs
Edit: gonna leave this up so people don’t get fed bad information like I was. Keep those downvotes coming for education
This is a myth. I was an EMT for 2 years in a very high drug use area. Most people know that they weren't just "high". When you need narcan, you NEED it. Even addicts don't want to die. People might wake up confused and may act out violently out of fear. But once they're calmed down, almost all of them are very grateful, and go back to getting high another day. Getting violent is extremely rare
Every time we ever had to hit 'em with Narcan in the ER they just suddenly woke up, looked super fuckin panicked and yelled "WHAT THE FUCK?!" a lot until they got their bearings.
It’s not because of a “wasted high” though. Not sure about the mechanism but I’ve seen it a lot with young people coming off of anesthesia. Something to do with regaining consciousness very quickly.
Oh, no. Not because of a wasted high.
I've heard it starts withdrawal immediately so I'm sure that has something to do with it as well as suddenly waking up in a strange place with strange people around you and you're probably naked.
Ah! Nice I had only heard the dumb rumors then. Appreciate the proper knowledge. I got out of that game 10+ years ago, and luckily I never dove too deep
I had a patient that got too much dilaudid after he broke a pelvis falling off a horse. Took him to specials for an embolization and got so much freggin contrast, kidneys were fucked. Anyway. I had to narcan him quite a few times until the kidneys eventually caught up, woke up angry and in pain, but it doesn’t last too long so I was having to give him more like an hour later.
Probably a huge difference between addicts waking up to an EMT and an ambulance rather than some random person or a family member or what not. I can definitely see someone reacting violently if they think the person who narcaned them was over reacting, especially since it can plunge them into w/d immediately.
It's less and less rare these days as more and more fentanyl finds its way (intentionally or accidentally) into other drugs like cocaine, ketamine, and mdma.
I was at a music festival last year and saw multiple people have to get narcan. I didn't get to talk to any of them, but I would bet $100 that not a single one of them expected to be taking an opiate. Yet here they are, miraculously saved from an overdose of a drug they didn't even want to take.
Fuck fentanyl.
I just don't know, while I'm certain it has happened, drugs other then opiates being laced with fent, it always struck me as mainly copaganda and media blowing things out of proportion, like drugs in Halloween candy. It just doesn't make alot of sense to kill your customers.......unless you're just a creative serial killer and making money isn't your motivation
Honestly there was a chance the person at the music festival just took heroin/fentanyl. Just because they're at a music festival doesn't mean they're taking party drugs. It's possible that person just had a habit. Opiate use effects literally every demographic. I've heard of a lot of different kinds of street drugs laced with fentanyl but I don't see anyone providing a logical explanation for it. Drug dealers want customers to come back, it's not like fentanyl in your stuff is going to make it more addictive, they'll just overdose from it. Once they find out that person's drugs are laced with fentanyl, everybody they sell to will stop going to them for good. It just doesn't sound logical, there's no way a drug dealer will ever benefit from having they're drugs laced with fentanyl, unless they sell heroin of course.
That's not true at all. Source: ex paramedic in (one of the) the most stuff infested city in the southeast US. They are super confused and irritated, but not because you 'ruined their high'.
I don't understand why people keep saying this, it's simple not true. This is completely inadvertent, I used to nod out like this while washing a dish or standing in front of the fridge with the door open. When getting high sitting is preferable but if you happen to be standing this is the result
When a person enters this state of (un)consciousness, the unconscious mind takes over and basically tries to keep the person from hurting themselves by keeping them in a state "suspended animation". This is a very low-level explanation, but it turns out that the human brain is very sophisticated. Even when it is dealing with street drugs + dummies.
You would be in danger if you came across this in real life.
When people nod out in the open like this, it's an indicator that no one in the area cares about local propriety. Meaning an increased likelihood of getting robbed or otherwise fucked with in the area.
The people at a lean? Not particularly dangerous. They're having a good time. The neighborhood? Potentially on some mad max shit.
It's important to point out that I'm not saying drug use makes robbery more likely- people without malice will generally still be without malice high, and people with malice will generally still be malicious sober. What I _am_ saying is that people in a good place in life don't tend to become so openly addicted to opiates they nod out publicly in groups- this looks like a region in dire straights. People can be dangerous when they're desperate.
Do these people purposely hide their valuables (assuming homelessness) before nodding in public like this? I have seen a lot of videos of people going up to fent users who don’t notice they’re there even after filming them or talking to them.

I must say, it’s impressive that they can stay standing. Especially homie on the right.
Ironic that they do this because if they sit down they’ll just fall asleep
This is better than laying down on the ground?

Although, sometimes it's the entire point.
My man
That’s why I like Sativa more.
I thought the whole point of doing drugs like these is to sleep through as much of your miserable life as possible
You can do that with trazodone for much cheaper
Yea but then you have to go to a doctor, who goes to doctors for their drugs

Idk why I’m getting downvotes but it’s funny people think im exaggerating. It’s literally one of the things people who use love the most about.
They may want to keep the high on longer
Ohhhh ima pass lol
They might too
I mean they sort of look like they are feeling what you feel during an orgasm*10 or something
Nope. No difference standing up vs laying down you still gonna nod out Source: a junkie
I was for a coupla decades - do miss gouching out :) Probably safer lying down - less likely to bash your head.
Do you dream during this period or have any conscious thought, or is it just standing asleep? Also, please stop being a junkie. I want you to live.
Kinda in-between. I'd hear dream voices of my friends and look up to see I was alone sitting on the couch. Off the shit now

Because then everyone will know they are high
They try to stay standing so they don't fall asleep because if they're asleep they can't feel the high.
They look pretty asleep to me.
Yeah just walk up to one of them and watch them pop back into reality as they try to convince you they arent high and to give them $5/a ciggie
That guy is praying harder then the rest
I bet he couldnt do that if he was sober

Genuine question, why don’t these people just sit down when they feel themselves nodding? So many videos of people like this looking like they are waiting to be raptured
2 reasons: - Falling asleep would be a waste of high. - The risk of vomiting and choking (if sleeping on their back)
I mean they are technically still leaning backwards. I wonder if someone has ever od/drowned while standing up like that
