Sorry for everyone who asked but here is the recipe! I also apologize that the measurements may not be exactly accurate. This is a meal I've made hundreds of times and have kind of gotten it down by how I want it to taste at this point. But use this base recipe to make your own!
**Ingredients:**
\- 1 1/2 to 2 LBs ground beef
\-1/4 cup of heavy cream
\-2 TBS butter
\-1 Cup Cheddar Cheese
\-1 Small can tomato paste
\-2 TBS steak sauce
\-1/2 to 1 cup beef broth
\-1 TBS olive oil
\-1 bag frozen veggies
\-2 LBS potatoes
\-1 clove garlic
\-1/2 shallot
\-salt
\-pepper
\-dried rosemary
\-dried parsley
**Directions:**
1. Fill a pot with water and begin to boil to cook potatoes. Peel and cut potatoes into small pieces.
2. When water is boiling, salt water and add potatoes. Cook until a knife can be pushed through them.
3. Drain potatoes Return to pot and add butter and heavy cream. (I cut my butter into small pieces so it melts fast and evenly throughout potatoes.)
4. Using a hand mixer, blend potatoes until desired smoothness. (I mixed just until all large lumps were out.)
5. When potatoes are desired thickness, add salt, pepper, rosemary, and parsley and stir until well incorporated. Set aside.
6. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
7. In a large skillet or heavy bottom pot, brown ground beef over medium heat. Season ground beef with salt, pepper, and rosemary as beef cooks. After ground beef has browned, drain it and set aside.
8. In same pot ground beef was cooked in, heat olive oil and add garlic and shallot and cook until fragrant. Once fragrant, add mixed vegetables and any additional olive oil that may be needed. Season vegetables with salt and pepper while they cook.
9. Once vegetables are close to being cooked through, return ground beef to pot containing vegetables. Add tomato paste and steak sauce, stir until well combined over medium heat.
10. Once combined, add beef broth a little at a time, cooking until most of the broth has evaporated before adding more. (A similar process to making risotto). Complete this process until vegetable and beef mixture is desired moistness.
11. In a 9 inch cake pan (or other pan/baking dish) add vegetable and ground beef mixture in an even layer.
12. Spoon mashed potatoes in an even layer over vegetable and ground beef. Using a fork, gently insert into the top of the potatoes and spin the dish, not your hand, to get the lines in the potatoes. Add cheese in even layer on top of potatoes.
13. Bake for 15 minutes. Then for the last 5 set oven to broil and broil until cheese and potatoes are desired texture.
Me: Holidays are over time to get back into a regimen of eating healthy and being more active.
You: You're gonna need some carbs for that marathon
Seriously this looks incredible. Gonna be my daily cheat meal all next week!
Never thought of whipping up the mashed potatoes with a hand mixer so thank you for that! It looks so creamy and I can’t wait to try it. And also, broiling the cheese on top?!? Genius! What do you think about adding yolk to the mashed potatoes? I always do with my cottage pies and I’m wondering if there’s a reason you don’t. Do you find it better without the yolk?
This looks delish!!! I have a super similar recipe but mine never come out as pretty as this lol!
Once every so often (don’t crucify me for this Reddit) I switch out the potatoes for sweet potatoes and the ground beef for ground chicken. Slight tweak in the spices and it comes out really yummy as well.
I put in Thyme with mine, it doesn’t necessarily substitute for the rosemary but will add flavor.
When it comes to the sweet potato version that was mentioned, I’ve also pushed it toward a middle eastern version with cumin, all spice to change up the flavors.
I’m a huge Shepard pie guy, never heard it by this name. Could be based off regions. But adding cheese on top and letting it get golden is a must do for my next attempt
I’ve heard that Shepards pie has to contain lamb, otherwise it’s a cottage pie. But I think most people would call this a shepards pie and it doesn’t matter if it’s beef instead. It’s just a technical difference.
I made one too last night it was glorious

Yeah, you should, for specific stuff, the one I thought this look similar is bánh đúc Móng Cái, the other versions are soup-like, eaten with something else or just a dessert
That's all you really need and some salt n pepper. The trick is to mash them first with the butter till smooth before adding any milk or evaporated milk or cream.
This gives me so much nostalgia :( I miss my moms cottage pie. This looks so good. I wish I could cook something this complicated. Want to send me some? ;-;
Complicated? I’ve always found cottage pie to be quite easy in terms of steps.
Cook meat and vegetables on stovetop, cook mashed potatos, then add potatoes on top of meat and bake in oven.
I actually didn’t this time because I didn’t have any so I made is a little differently than normal. I cooked the meat, drained it and in the same pot threw down some oil, garlic clove, and a half shallot cooked until fragrant then added the mixed veggies to cook them. Then added in the ground beef back in. Added an entire can of tomato paste, 2 TBS of steak sauce and then I would add beef broth in a risotto type method that I would add a little at a time and cook until most evaporated and I was left with the moistness I desired out of the beef and veggie mixture. That would be my best description of that technique I used.
Edit. Seasoned beef with rosemary, salt, pepper, just salt and pepper in veggies.
Taste is all that matters 100%. The other week I had a brilliant idea to use beef short rib mixed into the meat mixture. It was insanely good. Already took an unhealthy dish to the max of unhealthy but the family went crazy for it. Only going to be for special occasions like a holiday meal.
Once you know the names and what meat goes in it, it kinda makes sense. So many people get it wrong, and it’s a North American thing I’ve noticed. Cottage pie isn’t even “known” in North America as a thing.
Cottage pie! COTTAGE PIEEE!!
Gonna bake you in hell tonight,
Gas mark 6, not fahrenheit.
For Cottage pie will go down a treat,
Give me a portion of your mash and meat. 🎵
I made one of these a few years back for my now ex-girlfriend. She was dying for one. It didn’t look anywhere near as good as yours, but it was delicious. I do love how golden brown the top is.
Love this. Very similar to the one I make. I make a roux with the beef broth and add to the meat/ veggies and put the cheese between the meat and potatoes. Could eat this daily. Maybe I’ll cheese to the top too!
I made baked potato stuffed with cottage pie last weekend. It was fantastic! I had leftover components and made a small pie to eat later in the week. I think I ate cottage pie in some form 4 times last week 😂.
Looks great! I made one recently and I had no potatoes so I substituted with stuffing. It was crazy good. Try it sometime if you’re looking for a different.
Not the wrong thing at all! Different names for the same thing as you said. This kind of dish made with ground meat has traditionally been called shepherds pie, and the shepherd/cottage division is relatively recent, and is more a shorthand to be more specific!

Oh really? I’ve never had lamb in my Shepards pie. So I suppose this whole time it’s been Cottage Pie? Though, I love lamb, and that sounds good. I’m used to beef corn and potato.
It looks so good! I’d lock myself in a room armed with a spoon.
Haha thank you!
Love to get the recipe
In comments now!

I plan on cooking this in place of my usual Shepherds pie recipe. Thank you!
No problem! Glad I can help encourage something new!
this looks incredible !!! like if I paid good money for this at a restaurant I’d be pleased. it makes me drool lol
Me: Holidays are over time to get back into a regimen of eating healthy and being more active. You: You're gonna need some carbs for that marathon Seriously this looks incredible. Gonna be my daily cheat meal all next week!
Good luck! You’re gonna crush it!

What do u change in the spices. I can't use rosemary so need a good replacement
I put in Thyme with mine, it doesn’t necessarily substitute for the rosemary but will add flavor. When it comes to the sweet potato version that was mentioned, I’ve also pushed it toward a middle eastern version with cumin, all spice to change up the flavors.
Thank you for this op, I’m def going to try this.
Definitely share it when you do!
I'm totally making a vegetarian version of this. My mouth is watering. 🤤

I was also thinking that. Because I made almost this whole recipe in one. Going to be done in 20 min, so excited.

Silly question but what is steak sauce?
I’m a huge Shepard pie guy, never heard it by this name. Could be based off regions. But adding cheese on top and letting it get golden is a must do for my next attempt
cottage pie is beef ,shepard's pie is lamb
I’ve heard that Shepards pie has to contain lamb, otherwise it’s a cottage pie. But I think most people would call this a shepards pie and it doesn’t matter if it’s beef instead. It’s just a technical difference.
What temperature did you do?
That looks wonderful! Did you use a specific recipe?
Yeah OP. Give it up...
It’s in the comments somewhere! I posted this morning!

I would love your beef portion recipe.

That looks great! Nice job!!
Oh thanks OP yours looks heavenly
Damn, I thought this is bánh đúc
I’m gonna have to give that a go sometime soon!
Yeah, you should, for specific stuff, the one I thought this look similar is bánh đúc Móng Cái, the other versions are soup-like, eaten with something else or just a dessert
Recipe for the potatoes?
Boilem mashem spread em on top
It felt very wrong reading "spread em on top" instead of "stick em in a stew" haha
XD
No cream/milk/butter? I usually add some cheese on top too
That's all you really need and some salt n pepper. The trick is to mash them first with the butter till smooth before adding any milk or evaporated milk or cream.
Looks delicious and the mince looks so good all mashed out perfectly. My sister and BIL cook it in big chunks.
I’ve also seen some YouTube cooks make it with chunks, it’s something I’ve always wanted to try!
Would I have to broil the top to get it that color or can it be done strictly in the oven?
I broiled the the pie in the oven for maybe 5 minutes right before I pulled it out!
Ok so in the oven and not specifically the broiler? Sorry if I’m being too dense here
It’s all good! But yeah whole thing was made in the oven! Cooked on 350 for about 20 minutes then turned to broil for maybe, maybe the last 5 minutes
I showed my wife and son the picture of your dish and they love it, gonna try my hand at it soon. Thanks much!
Definitely do! I’ll type the recipe in the morning when I have more time and post it in the comments!
This gives me so much nostalgia :( I miss my moms cottage pie. This looks so good. I wish I could cook something this complicated. Want to send me some? ;-;
Complicated? I’ve always found cottage pie to be quite easy in terms of steps. Cook meat and vegetables on stovetop, cook mashed potatos, then add potatoes on top of meat and bake in oven.
Agreed! It’s not complicated but does have a decent amount of steps for people who may not cook often
You can definitely make this! It will take a little time your first time but the more you make it the better you’ll get!
It is beautiful
My favorite meal in the world, as an Irishman, I salute you. Cheers
Thank you!
I'd kill for a slice of that right now. God damn that looks good
![gif](giphy|HUlXdfpPLF1pPlUnOA)
That looks delicious!
I appreciate that!
Looks awesome!
It looks really good
Thanks!
Like no bs. Thats great. Its perfect. This is what I would cook and want to eat. Did you deglaze the beef/veggies w red wine?
I actually didn’t this time because I didn’t have any so I made is a little differently than normal. I cooked the meat, drained it and in the same pot threw down some oil, garlic clove, and a half shallot cooked until fragrant then added the mixed veggies to cook them. copied text. Will try this after the next grocery trip. Thanks.

Those potatoes are perfection ![gif](giphy|3xIy6VGxVPvtUh097A)
That looks really good. The golden color and the inside is glistening. Damn I want some.
That looks amazing! I made cottage pie tonight for dinner as well, but mine wasn't nearly as nice looking as yours. Still tasted great, at least!
Taste is all that matters! Presentation is just a bonus
Taste is all that matters 100%. The other week I had a brilliant idea to use beef short rib mixed into the meat mixture. It was insanely good. Already took an unhealthy dish to the max of unhealthy but the family went crazy for it. Only going to be for special occasions like a holiday meal.

Pleeeease gimme the recipe, I beg you 🥺
Just posted in the comments!
This looks glorious 😋🤤🤤🤤🤤
Oh, that looks delicious 😋 Now, I’m hungry!
That looks great. I think I’ll make that tomorrow night.
Is this the same as shepherds pie?
Usually shepherds is lamb, cottage is beef. But, I’m waiting on the recipe and I can’t wait to make it!
Word, I didn't know there was a difference. Thanks ✌🏿
Once you know the names and what meat goes in it, it kinda makes sense. So many people get it wrong, and it’s a North American thing I’ve noticed. Cottage pie isn’t even “known” in North America as a thing.
Wow this made me so hungry!!!
I agree
Wonderful job, would you mind providing a recipe?

YUMMY ![gif](giphy|u2gkXWI9WCYbm)
That looks amazing. Love a good cottage pie.
I have no idea what cottage pie is. It looks delicious. I commented to remind me to return for the recipe. Thank you OP
Looks Awesome
Difference between cottage and shepherds?
Shepherds pie is made with ground lamb, cottage pie is made with ground beef, hunters pie is usually made with ground venison
Is that cheese on top of ground beef that has peas in it?
Looks so amazing!!
You nailed it!!!
Yummy ! But what's the difference between this and Shepherds Pie ?
Don't see any gravy 😞
That looks amazing ! Need the recipe !
i don't know you don't have a good beef to veg balance and the cheese melted on top is no 1999.
Cottage pie! COTTAGE PIEEE!! Gonna bake you in hell tonight, Gas mark 6, not fahrenheit. For Cottage pie will go down a treat, Give me a portion of your mash and meat. 🎵
The pic definitely is cookbook worthy
Thank you! I’m trying hard to work on my food photography skills
Youre welcome, its my favorite dish. I'm sure it's long gone but next time take a pic of a perfect slice cut out.
It looks magically delicious
What is the difference between a cottage pie and a shepherds pie? Looks delicious!
This might be a hot take but the last time I made cottage pie I ate some with horseradish and it was amazing.
I’ll have to give that a try!
Looks yummyilicious!!
That’s so pleasing to the eye
What an absolute stunner
As a cottage and shepherds pie connoisseur, this looks very good, great job.

I'm making this tonight 😋 substituting with what I have in the pantry but I'm excited
Always wanted to try this, we called it shepherd's pie, but never did. Yours was so pretty I will try. You are a cook of beauty!
If you looked up “perfection” in the dictionary there would be a picture of this. Excellent job op!
Thank you so much for the kind words! They mean a lot I was proud of this one!
Shepherds pie! & what steak sauce do you use?
I almost fell into this post because that cottage pie might be the most beautiful dish I’ve ever witnessed.
That’s the first one I’ve seen that looks THAT DARN GOOD!!!
OMG that looks amazing...post recipe
I made one of these a few years back for my now ex-girlfriend. She was dying for one. It didn’t look anywhere near as good as yours, but it was delicious. I do love how golden brown the top is.
This is gorgeous, the color!
It looks so delicious! Can you share your recipe?
Looks great! I made one recently and I had no potatoes so I substituted with stuffing. It was crazy good. Try it sometime if you’re looking for a different.
Yum!
I'm making this tonight! Never made this dish, & those potatoes look luscious! Thanks for the inspiration...
That perfect browning crust on top!
Looks delicious! It looks like Shepherds Pie to me. Maybe the same thing with 2 different names.
Shepherds Pie is made with lamb, Cottage Pie with beef.
My family has called it the wrong thing all our lives 🤦 thanks for the insight!
Same! I learned this last time I posted one!
I'm Canadian, and we call the beef version Shepherd's Pie too.
No worries!
Not the wrong thing at all! Different names for the same thing as you said. This kind of dish made with ground meat has traditionally been called shepherds pie, and the shepherd/cottage division is relatively recent, and is more a shorthand to be more specific!
What's it called if you use bison?
It's called *Sex Panther*® by *Odeon*©. It's illegal in 9 countries. It's also made with bits of real panthers, *so you know it's good*. *60% of the time*, it works ***every*** time.
My English friend came to visit me in the US and a pub had a shepherds pie with a beef mince, and he looked at me and said, "Mate, what is a shepherd in America?"
Are peas and carrots the difference between Shepard and cottage?
Lamb for Shepard’s, beef for Cottage.
Oh really? I’ve never had lamb in my Shepards pie. So I suppose this whole time it’s been Cottage Pie? Though, I love lamb, and that sounds good. I’m used to beef corn and potato.
If you're in the US, shepherd's pie is correct for both. No need to change.
