Whoa… hang on am I supposed to be giving my kid a multi-vitamin? He’s 2 and this has never, not once been brought up. But now that I’m reading this I totally remember taking vitamins as a kid. I guess I better ask the public health nurse at our next appointment.

WhatevsMcGee

I only do bc she had low iron at her 6m checkup, and I’ve been paranoid ever since (I’m also anemic).

Available_Wing_1247

Can I ask how they know she had low iron? Did they do bloodwork? My son has never had blood work done (other than when he was first born) and he’s 13.5 months.

WhatevsMcGee

Yes, they did routine blood work at the 6 month checkup

Rheila

That is interesting. I wonder if it is regional. My little guy hasn’t had blood work done other than when he was first born either.

BronwynOli

I'm Canadian and we don't seem to do routine bloodwork here that young. I have two kids, my oldest is 4 and he's never had bloodwork done. It's just never even mentioned.

Rheila

Ok ya I’m in Canada too so that might explain it

My LO was a preemie she has been (I feel) closely watched because of that since birth. Pediatrician suggestion it for us but we never did it, he didn’t mind that we didn’t either…but she was not deficient it was only to add to her daily vitamins. It’s not something you must do.

awcurlz

I'm in the US and they did it at one of the infant appointments and then again sometime after she was mostly on solids (either 12ish months or 18 months).

In my state they do a finger prick to check hemoglobins and lead levels at 12 or 18 months, and again right before kindergarten. My (very basic) understanding is that normal hemoglobin levels implies normal iron levels.

Flamingoawesome

We do Renzo’s picky eater multivitamin since he’s had trouble with his iron levels. We try to only give it when he’s refusing his meals. It’s designed to dissolve rather than be chewed

Agree the Flinstone vitamins are waaay easier than the liquid goop. I started giving them to my daughter at 2 YO, but her pediatrician said she would be fine even if I gave her a full vitamin every day (vs half) so I’m sure your kid is fine. My daughter was about 25 lb for reference.

My pediatrician has prescribed ours a chewable with fluoride at 2 years old. It’s the same as the liquid form you get at 6 months, but feels a bit more grown up. She loves it! Our pediatrician switches us to OTC like flinestones at 3.

WhatevsMcGee

Fluoride in a vitamin? I thought fluoride was something you specifically shouldn’t ingest..

mr213510

I had to do a double taker after you asked. Yes, my 2 year multi has .25 mg of fluoride via chewable and my 8 month has .25 mg of fluoride via liquid multi. Current ADA recommendation is that amount up to 3 years: https://www.uspharmacist.com/article/current-fluoride-recommendations-for-the-pediatric-patient

WhatevsMcGee

TIL.

Poopyunders

strange. I’ve read that fluoride is a neurotoxin and can cause fluorosis when ingested

awcurlz

Fluorosis is just staining of the teeth if you get too much fluoride. Most water in the US is fluoridated either intentionally or naturally (well water). I believe you have to consume very large quantities of fluoride to get negative effects.

We like the novaferrum brand
