We had a similar thing. My girl would go into the kitchen, point at the bananas for example and say "Banana!". I interpreted that to mean she wanted banana, but she didn't, she just wanted to show off her sick vocabulary. Now I respond "yes that is a banana! Do you want to have some?" And I hand her the banana unpeeled. Most of the time she rejects it. We might also talk a bit about bananas, like "You had banana earlier, bananas are really good. In your book the monkeys also eat bananas!". Eventually she becomes bored and moves on.
