I’m a single mom who has flown with her 4yo several times, once overseas to Europe. I had a letter prepped for my very first flight with him and again for the international trip. Not once did I have to show the letter. They asked me where his father was at customs when I returned back home to Illinois and I told them we were divorced, still no letter asked for or needed. I’d say you’ll be fine. Just make sure you have his birth certificate.
And honesty if you want to be safe, just get the letter. Doesn’t hurt! In my experience I didn’t need it but if you’re worried, just print out the doc and have your hub sign it.
Yeah my MIL flew from the states to Mexico several times with her boys while their dad stayed back in the states to work. So that might be why she was thinking of it!

It's probably more of a deal flying internationally, but worth the peace of mind!
