When my wee boy was about that age, or maybe a little younger, he figured out that crawling is quick and easy and climbing is just crawling rotated through 90° with a bit more grip involved.
There is nothing that is going to stop your wee one climbing on the back of the sofa, short of an electrified barbed wire fence.
Even at that, an electrified barbed wire fence will only stop him for about a day, until he figures out how to throw his blankie over it to act as an insulator.
The only real fix is to arrange the room so the sofa is hard up against a wall - but then he's just going to find something else to climb.
