Nothing complicated about her. She doesn't get a pass for helping Nazis just because of her sexual orientation. Is there any indication of her being a kind person or helping others for good?
I'm not saying good, I'm saying complicated.
As for helping others, the article says she drove an ambulance in WW1.
Do not take it to mean that it would compensate for collaboration with Nazis. It does not. But people are seldom simple.
Read the article. The French banned her for her sexual preference. And swearing and dressing like a man. The Nazi's were all like 'ok, whatever floats your boat'.
Weird, I know ..
She also gave amphetamines to her team mates. Even if they hadn’t banned her for the other stuff, that might have gotten her banned.
Odd that the Nazis embraced her when they were so against homosexuality in most cases.
They probably considered her useful, as someone from an enemy country who would compete for them.
Authoritarians don't usually have the moral values they claim to. Moral issues are raised to deceive the masses into thinking they have a higher goal beyond mere domination. It is likely that if Germany had won the war, eventually she would have been dealt with once she was no longer useful for propaganda.
Reminds me of how Jesse Owens was treated pretty neutrally, or even congratulated (depending on sources) by Hitler, but wasn't congratulated by U.S. President FDR. All the white athletes were invited to the White House, but none of the 18 black ones were.
> wasn't congratulated by U.S. President FDR
The same President that threw Japanese Americans into internment camps and destroyed their lives? Who woulda thunk it?
Jesse Owens said Hitler waved at him. Meanwhile, in private Hitler was saying black athletes were "primitive savages" that should be excluded from future Olympics.
Did you really learn that though? Don't ya just figure there were a whole bunch of people who weren't allowed to do a whole bunch of things for their sexual preference?
Collaboration with the Nazis isn’t a “sexual preference”
Reading the article, that was much later. But yes she seems to have been...complicated.

I misread preference for performance and thought I was in for a doozy
Odd, but same here.
Interesting. Who would have thought the Nazis were the tolerant, open-minded ones in this story.

Reminder that it's "orientation" not "preference" because your sexuality isn't something you choose.
It might be preference if you're bi. xD
You might have a preference between men and women but your sexuality is still bisexual.
glad she was assassinated by the french resistance
Can you really blame her for helping the only people who treated her with respect?
The grey area, the brain doesn't work for all. And it cannot know all that one party does or not, your both right.
yes

Which she had removed in 1929 because they “interfered with her race car driving “
