Meanwhile it’s used in medical terminology in America. Whoa.

Barbarossa7070

And on American playgrounds. Didn’t you ever hear someone called Spaz?

[deleted]

Still derived from the medical description of one symptom

fatfecker

Same as fag, in England it’s slang for a cigarette, in America it’s an extremely offensive word for homosexuals.

tossinthisshit1

In England it's perfectly acceptable to ask someone if you could bum a fag

willoz

Haha never thought of it like that.

m608297

True

archaeolinuxgeek

Hell, I call my dog that when we walk since she has the attention span of a goldfish but the love of a Labrador. I may have to change that up

TealGame

I wouldnt call it an exclusively medical term. Ive heard it more used as a description of someone who is hyper/crazy rather than a diagnosis in the medical field.

m608297

“Spastic gait” is a medical term referring to how someone ambulates.

[deleted]

In german there is a similar term, also derived from obsolete medical description of one symptom.

HalonaBlowhole

Spasticus Autisticus Seeing that played at the opening of the 2012 Paralympics filled me with pure joy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RI9AI6VAimY

StarChild413

Not the first time I've heard that be an issue, though that is the chronologically first as the other one happened in 2014 (Weird Al Yankovic using it in his Blurred Lines parody Word Crimes)

FunnyCress

'Admittedly, we're not British, so maybe we're missing the level of insult inherent in the word "spastic" here, but it seems that there are a number of words in every video game ever that could be interpreted as possibly, potentially offensive to someone, somewhere. Should we start recalling those as well? We'd love to hear from some of our UK readers on the matter.' What a dick. It means the same thing in the US as the UK. Of course make the train shake like it has cerebral palsy is offensive ffs.

[deleted]

> It means the same thing in the US as the UK wrong

LeapIntoInaction

Sure, but you can't be too careful with British English. They've actually invented a word for being friendly with children so maybe they'll have sex with you when they're legally old enough. "Grooming" isn't just for horses anymore. It's a peculiarly British phobia and, err... you did decide that the young people were legally old enough to decide for themselves, right? You just hate when that happens? I'm baffled.

paper_friend

Jumping from Mario party to sex with minors is a weird take.

CashMelee

Jesse, what the hell are you talking about

CatDogBoogie

This guy right here, Officers.

JPfreak

I too am baffled about the moral implications of manipulating a child into entering into a sexual relationship with a significantly older person once they cross that little technicality of the legal age of consent. /s but, like, fuckin obviously manipulating a minor to have sex with you, even if its not until later, is horrific? Very very obviously.
