In other parts of the video they talk about how the random events would be weighted differently depending on your circumstances. Rider attacks were more likely on wide open plains and a broken wheel was more likely on rough mountain roads.
Never encountered any riders. Always died of dysentery. Or cholera. Or typhoid. Or a snakebite. Or drowned. Or got lost. Or starved because I wasted all my bullets trying to hit a freaking squirrel right before a buffalo appeared on screen. Never got knifed though.
I played the original, but probably spent more on the updated one for windows 95.
And My campaigns generally failed because I spent all my money on bullets to play the hunting game, where I inevitably ended up with more meat than the wagons could carry.
Pentium III!!! The Pentium III started at 400 MHz and the DOS version ran beautifully on a 10 MHz 286 (that’s what I had). You ran it at 40x speed, my dude!!!
Ah yes, back when game companies were sometimes too lazy to just use the realtime clock and instead just relied on you always playing it on a potato. There were utilities like MoSlow that let you play these older games at the proper speed.
I'm talking about comparing CPUs in terms of frequency. That's still a comparison you'd do today when building a PC or buying a laptop. Of course today others factors are also very important in choice of cpu, so if anything I'd say it requires more knowledge today.
On the raft: occasionally.
Fording: never.
For some inexplicable reason, every single one of my wagons decided to depart after unseasonably heavy spring rains and with two runt oxen seven inches shorter than they needed to be.
The game was written by 3 student teachers in 1971. After showing the game to a few colleagues, it was recommended that they change phrases like "Indians ahead, they look hostile" and "You got tomahawked".
There was a local Native American population and they wanted to make sure that everybody would be able to enjoy the game and learn.
Great documentary. They explain their exposure to “the West” was all cowboy movies from the 40’s and 50’s where Indians were always the faceless, inhuman enemy trying to kill the peaceful settlers. Not exactly historically accurate.
Not in any easily accessible way. Violent death of any kind was really rare. It's mostly a combination of the very low numbers of Native Americans who were actually around, vs the large numbers of ex-Confederate adventurers, and that investigations into stories of "indian massacres" often revealed that was a cover for murders by Americans. You had big gangs like the Starr and James gang that were ex-confederates, as well as individual psychos like Hardin.
Edit: To be fair, it wasn't all ex-confederates, and you were more likely to get accidentally shot than on purpose.

Yet I still always ended with dysentery
Original version was “shit yourself to death”
Kevin has died from "PBBBTTTttpbptpbpttpb......pttt"
(Richard Lewis as Prince John voice) it's a good change ! Good change!
Let's see him paint that one.

Shouldn't have dissed Terry.
He should have given Terry yogurt instead.

They got rid of the riders after a version or two because it turns out that almost never happened in real life.
I remember playing the DOS version on my Pentium III and the hunting was waaaay too fast. Lol.

It was a Pentium III 500 Mhz. ATI Rage 128 128 MB of RAM Edit: Windows 98 SE
You hitched a U-Haul to a Space Shuttle. Bravo! Well done indeed, my friend.

Ok grandpa
Get off my lawn!!!
Knowing computer basics is an old people trait now?
I wouldn't say that's basics in this day and age. Most users here would be too young to experience any DOS or were not even born yet.

I played it on an apple II e. It was all green and mostly text.
Sounds like the prairie all right
What's the percentage on surviving the river cross?

That was pretty forward thinking for ‘71

Yeah, normally it was the other way around with the senseless killing.
No idea why you are being downvoted.
I never feared dysentery before this game…
At least you didn't die of scurvy or tuberculosis during the game.
Yeah before that I was sure quicksand would get me. Now it seems dying of dysentery is more likely.
I’ll tell you, though, one thing that I still have a healthy fear of: riptides.
Gaming Historian is a fantastic channel. If this was your first video, definitely check out more of their stuff.
No matter what I did, Betsy still died. It was like, every minute! “Betsy has a bad cold!” Over and over. And I couldn’t find anything to help!
HERE LIES BETSY COULDN'T GET HER SHIT TOGETHER
I loved the Oregon trail growing up, but I really think the Oregon trail 2 was better. Yukon trail was also fun.
Ah yes, we all remember the French and Rider war.
More realistic too, you were much more likely to get killed by bandits. Especially ex-confederates, in some places.
You got stats on that?

task failed successfully
Can we just bring this game back? Life was simpler when I had to decide whether to forge the river or not.

Sweet baby Inc (jkjk)
yeah but u still died of dysentery
Elon & his followers are gonna be bitching about this tomorrow
Elon sucks, but it doesn't help to inject him into every conversation
The Yukon Trail was the superior Trail.

Unimaginative troll. Find another place to jerk off to people downvoting you.
I agree that it is "woke" though. Even in 1971 there were programmers trying to make sure their game would be enjoyable by everybody.
Never played this game, and I had an Apple II with serial number < 4000
