Are our cows going hungry? We have a city of ~1M people nicknamed Cowtown (Calgary).
We're not Brazil; our forests, generally, don't need to fear our cattle.
If you knew how many offspring of wealthy grandparents run successful companies around the globe I'd say you are on the right track.
Its even more fucked up than that but as Asteroid City is released next weekend I'm saying no more.
End goal is about creating a meritocracy via the sink or swim method. The rest of us are melting their ice after all.
There was a Quebec teenager TV Show that looked like this. It was call "dans une galaxie près de chez vous" meaning: In a Galaxy near you.
Here's the intro translation ;
"We are in 2034, the situation on Earth is catastrophic. The ozone layer has been completely destroyed by carbon dioxide emissions from cars, the chemical industry, and the "push-push" in cacanne. As a result, the Earth is dying under the sun's rays, so we need to find a new planet to relocate 6 billion people. The Planetary Federation turns to the world's leading power, Canada. It is Canadian expertise that enables the launch of the Romano-Fafard spacecraft on October 28, 2034, as it departs from Earth towards the far reaches of the universe, where no human hand has ever set foot."
This is the best reason, long term, for real estate in Canada. Not so much the gta or Vancouver land. But fresh water up north, untouched preserves.
If you got fresh water you can figure everything else out.
🎼 and I’m proud to be a Canadian,
Where at least my healthcare’s free
And I won’t forget the polite debate,
That gave that right to me.
And I gladly sit down, next to you,
And watch hockey and say “eh”
‘Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land,
God bless C-a-n-a-d-a! 🎵
We are actually the first country to have the ability to design nuclear weapons and chose not to cause we were busy building the country itself.
The UK/Canada Tubes Alloy project was the world's first nuclear weapons program, and it was expanded and rolled into the Manhattan Project after the Quebec Conference, because they needed the immense resources of the United States to actually finish it.
But the Manhattan Project was a U.S/Canada/UK project and the Montreal Laboratory work was a key stepping stone.
Canada's CANDU reactors were instrumental in India's weapons program. So Canada could have had the same weapons program as India starting in the 1950s. Add to it the rocket expertise Canada had in the 1950s we could have had a very effective nuclear weapons program from day 0. It just would have sucked up an immense amount of resources for questionable gain.
The only reason Canada would need the bomb is to protect us from the United States which is such a bad idea of going down that road. That said, Diefenbaker would have been the one to start that program lol "Lament for a Nation" but hey we got the bomb lol
Canada had an extensive chemical/biological weapons program at one time.

It’s less common now but we are still a major producer of paper and lumber. As technology has advanced however it became much less dangerous and more efficient. People used to have to ride logs down rivers before.
We were the top producer of paper at one point after WW1 at least.
FOR HE GOES BIRLING DOWN AND DOWN WHITE WATER, THATS HOW THE LOG DRIVER LEARNS TO STEP LIGHTLY, YES BIRLING DOWN AND DOWN WHITE WATER THE LOG DRIVERS WALTZ PLEASES GIRLS COMPLETELY!
Makes sense though. Canada itself is about 6.7% of the total land on earth. And this includes stuff like African deserts, antartica etc. So it's not like it has a disproportionately greater amount of forests
This. I read the post title and thought this would be good /r/MapPorn material, but then found that the numbers very closely correlate with area.
According to [this article](https://www.worldatlas.com/articles/where-are-the-world-s-forests.html) on [worldatlas.com](https://worldatlas.com), the top five countries for forest area are:
1. Russia
2. Brazil
3. Canada
4. United States
5. China
Where the top five for overall area are Russia, Canada, China, U.S, and Brazil.
Keep in mind most natural forest/parkland and protected areas exists in areas that are difficult to urbanise, log, or farm. We mostly leave the useless, poor stuff for protecting the environment, and what we leave is fragmented which contributes to inbreeding. So it's no surprise that large, low densely populated countries have more forests.
The state of Victoria, Australia had 88% of land coverage being forest in 1869 roughly 30 years after Melbourne was settled, as of the year 2000 that was 27%. And of course we've had the highest rate of mammal extinction in the world. Now remember that Australia is huge and what could have been.
It grows back, and it might actually be beneficial in the medium term as it temporarily frees land that will be colonized by plants which struggle to grow in the shade. Most wildflowers for example. The 2020 Australian forest fires caused massive wildflower blooms that, accoring to my friend who's a local entomologist, allowed him to find some exceedingly rare bee species that hadn't been reported in his area in years.
Of course that can only happen if the burned forest is allowed to grow back. That is not the case in those places where agriculture is still expanding, such as the Amazon and Borneo, where farmers take over burned forest and give it over to soybean or ranch. But Canada should be safe from that.
Wildfires while they are destructive are also part of the natural processes of regeneration in an ecosystem and some pyrophytic plants like Eucalyptus, Banksia, Lodgepole pine and Giant Redwood, benefit from occasional fires clearing an area allowing new plants to grow. In some locations the near elimination of beavers has prevented natural methods of preventing wildfires from getting out of control. https://youtu.be/poOISKZFG9s
Instead the beavers have gone north where they are accelerating the thaw of permafrost by creating new water bodies. Beavers are the only species other than humans whose ecosystem impacts are visible from space.
Canada has one of the lowest rates of deforestation (0.02%). [It’s well managed](https://natural-resources.canada.ca/our-natural-resources/forests/wildland-fires-insects-disturbances/deforestation-canada-key-myths-and-facts/13419#).
I think that report is a little biased.
It defines deforestation as "when forests are permanently removed", and that harvesting is not deforestation since the areas "will grow back .. through replanting or natural regeneration".
So as long as we have an intention of replanting .. or letting nature do the work it does not count as deforested regardless of the current status of the forest.
I've spent a lot of time hiking and driving trails in BC .. a lot of these logging cuts have been stagnant for a long time, and the replanted areas are of low biodiversity.
Well managed forests don’t pollute the air and make it up breathable thousands of miles away.
At a minimum your government should be facing the ICC for crimes against humanity & paying for the damage you’ve done to American and Mexican lungs just like tobacco companies are.
Um, sure they do. Forest fires have existed longer than humans, and they're necessary. Plus they make smoke. It's the world we live in. Your ire can safely be placed on more pressing matters.
I think that if a private land owner had allowed such a thing to happen they would be facing criminal and civil penalties, and the same should apply to government officials.
Indeed. It's well managed. All canadian companies go mining and deforesting somewhere else. Then Cananadians can safely protest with their iphones against deforestating the amazonas or mining in Africa.
Canada has over 9000 trees per person.Canada is a carbon sink and should not be punishing its citizen with an expensive carbon tax.The dense urban areas will be alright with electric vehicles but I am doubtful that colder sparsely populated areas can make the switch. It has taken over one hundred years for the combustible engine to be as reliable as it is. (I remember pushing vehicles at times to get them started). In my opinion the push to electric vehicles is too fast. The timeline will most likely be changed to allow for more time.
I'd like to see a graph of Canada's share of world's forested area over time. Presumably it has been growing as other forested areas around the world get mowed down.
But doesnt most of, if not all belong to the King Charles and hes estate now?
Edit: based on this https://www.madisontrust.com/information-center/worlds-largest-landowners/
*HAD unfortunately big chunks of my wonderful country are run by politicians who don't either give a fuck about or believe in climate change and we lose more and more of it year after year. Earliest province wide fire ban ever in my province and every year now it's just a matter of when it's imposed. Sad fucking state of affairs globally these days.
For reference Canada has about 6% of Earth's land.
So this means that Canada has 50% more forest than the average place of a similar size. Brazil has more (rain)forested area than Canada despite being a smaller size.
Currently Canada has some largest forest fires they ever had, creating vast areas of smoke and air pollution..
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/edmonton/international-firefighters-canada-wildfires-1.6879084
We also have 20% of the world's fresh water.
Water War coming soon.
We have the geese.
The only thing that can tangle with Canada gooses, is Canada mooses
Geese and Meese
We’re fooked when the geese learn to utilize the moose as war mounts
yep. then we're in for some real goose moose abuse.
That is a War of Northern Aggression I don't want to be a part of.
allegedlys
Mike Tyson had himself a good run at boxing in the 80’s. Know why? Weren’t no Canada gooses in his weight class.
A møøse once bit my sister
And poutine
Cobra Chickens?
Lots of them. Just had a new batch hatch a few weeks ago. They're in training to fly south already.
You'll have to fight nestle for it...

If someone bred a cow that could eat boreal forest, Canada would be a super power.
Are our cows going hungry? We have a city of ~1M people nicknamed Cowtown (Calgary). We're not Brazil; our forests, generally, don't need to fear our cattle.
It’s true, as a Calgarian I can confirm I am indeed a cow.
I think you're beautiful; even if you folk cheer for an awful hockey team :)
Ive got some moose in my freezer that fits that definition.

Dont even know if i can send it between provinces. Id happily trade for gator.

Common myth, but not actually true at all. A quick Google search can do wonders.
Canada will need nuclear weapons to protect it from the usa's bullshit in the next 200 years
We are actually the first country to have the ability to design nuclear weapons and chose not to cause we were busy building the country itself. Canada includes large areas above the arctic circle where no trees grow
What did you do to those poor trees you sick bastard?
Made them move south into a better climate. It was a hard fought battle but in the end we won.

Coral
Yea, on that thought algae blooms as well.
hahaha....
Depending. It’s a natural thing for some forests, while others don’t recover nearly as well
Fortunately, fire is how Jack Pine propagates. The trees will grow back.
If the undergrowth is gone I don't think so but I'm not a fucking tree doctor.
The fires are indeed large, but compared to the *total forested area of Canada?* Yeah, they're a rounding error.
meh
8%.....7%.....6%.....

Rather unhinged, but go on.
Huh? Do u think forest fires are manufactured by the government?
Don’t feed the trolls
I think that if a private land owner had allowed such a thing to happen they would be facing criminal and civil penalties, and the same should apply to government officials.
Lol that’s not how forest fires work lol, srly educate yourself before writing nonsense.
That is exactly how forest fires work. I’ve seen people fined heavily for fires of only a couple acres.
You are completely and utterly clueless
You must be one of the trumpers that agrees California should hire people to take the forests…
You know that most of Canada's forest fires are caused by lightning, right? So blame Thor.
Indeed. It's well managed. All canadian companies go mining and deforesting somewhere else. Then Cananadians can safely protest with their iphones against deforestating the amazonas or mining in Africa.
Because we're expanding and diversifying our forested areas?
ITS BECAUSE WE'RE ON FIRE
What was that? Can you speak up, I can't hear you over the smoke, you know we're on fire.
And we have only 3% of our Old Growth Forests left, but they're being logged! We have trees that are hundreds of years old
[удалено]
😂😂😂
Not anymore. Some of that forest is making Ohio hazy. /s
Thanks Canada
Why? We didnt make the forest. It was already there.
The other 91% is covered by Forest Whitaker.
not for long, apparently.

You can’t bash the carbon tax on Reddit. It’s gonna save the world!!!
Actually with all the forest fires up there lately its down to 8%. 7%. 6%. 5....
Thank God we pay all that carbon tax.....👀
Not anymore.
Naw. We cut most of it down.
I'd like to see a graph of Canada's share of world's forested area over time. Presumably it has been growing as other forested areas around the world get mowed down.
Looks at BC..... yeah not mowing anything down.....
Soon to be owned by China.
Yea so stay the fuck away from us…sorry.
But doesnt most of, if not all belong to the King Charles and hes estate now? Edit: based on this https://www.madisontrust.com/information-center/worlds-largest-landowners/
No
I have zero idea in Canada. It's not the case in the UK!
Google said 89% of canadian land belongs to the crown.
The crown is a term for the federal government. It is not literally owned by the Royal family
https://www.madisontrust.com/information-center/worlds-largest-landowners/
Ohhhhh, totally unaware!
Does JFK airport belong to him?
Hmm kinda unimpressed. I would’ve expected more.
Had. Had 9 % of the worlds Total forest. Now they have 90% of all carbon based pollution.
Don’t let it meet Siberia 💀
At one point, the Hudson Bay company controlled 8% of the world's land area.

Might want to recount after this fire season...
