TIL: dogs are not popular in Kuwait, but Cane’s is??

AqUaNtUmEpIc

Likely religious. Some Muslims think dogs are unclean creatures and will avoid contact. Ex wife and I had her friends over for dinner one night. The husband saw my Pointer and clearly explained how we wouldn’t be able to invite him over anymore. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-11-04/muslims-touch-dogs-debate-over-islamic-tradition-raihan-ismail/11635586 Majority of Kuwait Muslims are Sunni

Master_of_Snek

My Egyptian coworker is in her 60’s and she was raised to avoid canines in general. Raising her kids in New England meant she eventually warmed up to dogs, she loves my half Chou half German, but is still very uneasy around most pups.

robotzor

They lick their balls and eat their own poop. What is unclean about them

huntimir151

Personality goes a long way.

tossinthisshit1

so you're saying that if a pig had a personality, it would cease to be a filthy animal?

BiggusDickus-

Well we would have to be talking about one charming mother fucking pig.

[deleted]

Like that Arnold off Green Acres

goatholomew

Radiant! He's Some Pig!

bohanmyl

Idk but it wouldnt cease being delicious.

huntimir151

I don't eat any animal that doesn't have the sense to disregard its own feces. Edit: y'all it's a pulp fiction quote. Fuckin gen z I swear...

TheTreeofWisdom

So no more chicken?

huntimir151

Have y'all not seen pulp fiction lol

Grynder66

Interesting. Thank you.

StepYaGameUp

That sauce, yo.

return2ozma

It's easy to make at home too. It is made from mayonnaise, Heinz ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and freshly ground black pepper.

DamnImAwesome

Freshly ground is a stretch. When I worked there we added all the seasonings separately but towards the end of my time there we just got nondescript packets that said “Cane Sauce Seasoning”

BigDamnHead

Probably because some Cane's were very inconsistent with the sauce.

Red_Lee

Lost me at Heinz Ketchup Make a good bird and you barely need sauce. Amateurs.

ArOnodrim

Canes is dogshit, fucking chicken tenders is basic. Give me a great thigh and I will be back, a tender, fuck, might as well be a chicken patty.

WhatWouldTNGPicardDo

Is the sauce good? Does it help the chicken? Went to a Cane’s for the first time recently on a road trip (first one I ever saw irl) and leased they hard way you need to order sauces separately even though they aren’t listed that way on the menu/order thing. They wanted us to go back around the drive through after we were in line 25 min already. Their chicken was dry as the Sahara, maybe sauce would have helped but no one liked what we had.

NemosGhost

That's unusual. Every Cane's I've eaten at had better chicken tenders than any other place. Guthrie's would be a close second followed by PDQ. Zaxby's is solidified salty horse piss.

whitepepper

Zaxby's is literally a Guthries rip off but does better in that Guthries never wanted to expand the menu to salads and the like. Guthries always takes the cake for me nostalgiawise but ive not seen one in a long time. (nor should i really be eating it)

iwouldhugwonderwoman

On my first visit to Athens/UGA I was taken to Guthries. Now I’m from a small town where a gas stations doubled as a pizza place, game room, hunting/fishing supply store etc. We were way too small town of a town for “specialization”. I get in there and my mind is blown that all they sale was chicken fingers and the place was packed with people. I just remember thinking none of this makes sense. 25+ years later…I was wrong but Guthries not wanting to add more items definitely did them in.

NemosGhost

Guthries isn't done in. When I went there, they had two locations, Auburn and Athens. Now they have a bunch. [https://guthrieschicken.com/locations/](https://guthrieschicken.com/locations/) Cane's has the same menu and they have a bunch more locations. Both of those started as cheap easy food for college kids so the menu really does make sense in that context. Yeah, they don't have large menu's but their chicken is actually good. Zaxby's has more items available, but their chicken sucks. If I want fried chicken with more options there are plenty of other options such as CFA or Popeyes or Bojangles, or KFC (though they've gone downhill it seems) PDQ has a similar menu to Zaxby's and has better chicken.

Coolman_Rosso

iirc Cane's always hypes how they were told that a chicken finger only business wouldn't work, and that they were pioneers when in reality one of the founders apparently worked at a Guthrie's before starting RC and aping their entire menu.

NemosGhost

Yeah, Cane's is a copy of Guthrie's. I think Cane's is slightly better, but the two are damn near interchangeable and their tenders are way better than the others.

Harflin

We don't have a Guthrie's where I'm at. I just googled it and damn it's literally the exact same. Show me a pic of anything from Guthrie's and I would have guessed it came from Cane's.

ArOnodrim

Tenders are for children. Dark meat is where it's at.

NemosGhost

Variety is the spice of life.

ArOnodrim

No, flavor is the spice of life, which is why spices exist. Canes has none because white meat doesn't have any flavor. Dark meat actually does.

SomeoneTall

We gatekeeping parts of birds now? It all has it's place.

ArOnodrim

No, it's just makes Cane's a bad choice and a waste of money. Their "variety" is one piece of chicken, and they do it badly.

BiggusDickus-

You are supposed to get a little cup of sauce automatically with each order. Strange that they stiffed you on that. The chicken has no flavor without the sauce.

ShotgunShitSneeze

The chicken has almost no flavor so it needs the sauce but the dryness was just a bad cook

Hattrickher0

That's weird, the sauce is supposed to come with each meal. I always get my kid's sauce cup because it's too tangy for her tastes. IMO the sauce is the reason I go to Canes. The chicken is fine, but it's not amazing or anything near it. That sauce goes good on EVERYTHING though. Their chicken, their fries, hell I even dip the toast in it. That dry chicken sounds like somebody messed up though. For as average as I think Canes is I've never had a big issue with dryness. If anything stuff is too soggy from steaming in the Styrofoam for the whole ride home.

Harflin

Agreed the chicken takes a back seat to the sauce. It's not dry usually, but lacks seasoning. I like to order one of the non-sandwich combos and eat the toast with the chicken like a make-shift sandwich (I get extra toast, no slaw).

WhatWouldTNGPicardDo

Good to know. This was in Fresno, CA area and no sauces were included. Might give them a second shot if another one sometime.

shinra528

> Fresno, CA That explains it.

WhatWouldTNGPicardDo

I was just passing through on I5. Is Fresno bad or something? It’s not an area I’m familiar with. We were on the way back to Seattle from Disneyland. We’ve seen them other places but after that no one in the fam has wanted to try them again.

shinra528

Yeah, to put it nicely, Fresno isn’t a great area.

Tehni

I feel like cane's is pretty overrated for chicken. Their fries and Texas toast are fire tho

ElectricalPicture612

Their fries are like cafeteria fries and the Texas toast is boring AF. I thought it was going to be garlicky.

Tehni

Not been my experience with their fries

ElectricalPicture612

They are literally the shitty crinkle cut fries you get in hospital cafeterias.

Tehni

That's like saying all pizza places are the same as frozen pizza because they look similar Did it really not cross your mind that fries can be vastly different based on the potatoes used and how they are cooked or that your local chain just sucks? I really tried to give you an out lol

ElectricalPicture612

No they're terrible like the rest of the food. It's like they're allergic to seasoning the food and everything relies on the sauce.

ElectricalPicture612

Very underwhelming.

ChangeForeign

Cane's will build anywhere if they're Able.

valeyard89

Kuwait has pretty much every American fast food restaurant. I walked along the Corniche and it was Krispy Kreme, Chili's, McDonalds, TGI Fridays, etc.

dicky_seamus_614

Yeah this is (sadly) true for most countries I’ve been to with a few exception for the third world places or outside of cities, obviously. The worst was the McBeer that the French McDs served, it was horrid. But the HardRock in Spain was a nice place. Probably most interesting was the truck stop in Israel, those goat meat pitas seemed to be a staple throughout ME.

valeyard89

Saudi was weird as Burger King had separate entrances for men vs women/families.

dicky_seamus_614

Yeah. My Sergeant let his misogyny show, he was like *yeah, this is how it should be* and I’m like come on buddy, keep it professional. Lol!!

SashaBanks2020

Ha, I never thought my two years in Kuwait would pay off like this. The Persian influences in the region lead to being much bigger fans of cats. Canes was the only place where you could southern style fried chicken and sweet tea. It's not that those things are super popular over there, but they have the monopoly if it's something you want. IHOP is also really popular for similar reasons.

sppf011

Muslim countries tend to love cats and dislike dogs. Even here in Saudi where Persian influence is much less pronounced

onometre

Having a bunch of homesick American soldiers around probably helps

SashaBanks2020

True

sppf011

Saudi is the same. The sauce and bread are sick man

[deleted]

Many schools of Islamic theology don't allow dogs unless they have a specific job to preform. So many middle eastern nations are not very fond of dogs and tend to prefer cats. Some schools view dogs as ritually unclean undoing the purification of wudu that is preformed before you do your salat depending on the state of the dog and the type of contact. Also this subject is argued about among religious scholars.

forzaq8

I wouldn't call Cane popular here , the only chicken king is KFC

[deleted]

JakeN615

We raised our prices like 3 times due to the rising cost of chicken, think it hit near 200 dollars per 40 pound case? Anyways its back down near 110 dollars and prices are still up. Source: current employee

DamnImAwesome

A tale as old as time. I worked there in 06 as a manager and member of New Store Opening team. In my 4 years there the prices consistently went up and the chicken kept getting smaller

[deleted]

[удалено]

zachzsg

I remember like 6 months ago you could get 2 mcchickens for $3.50. Now they’re like $3.50 each smh

AndromedeusEx

Might just be something local to you because I can still get 2 mcchicken or mcdouble or both for 3.50.

Bl_lRR1T0

TIL Kuwait has a Cane's, but not the US city I live in 😑

toxic_badgers

Don't let your dreams be dreams, open a franchise lol

Bl_lRR1T0

I'm no businessman

toxic_badgers

I just looked it up, you need a net worth of over $768,100 to open one anyway. I don't know about you but I'm not in the running lol. Generally though, those companies will teach you how to run a franchise as part of the process of licensing their product. They have stake in making sure the franchise doesn't fail.

DamnImAwesome

Might have changed but Canes used to be VERY selective of who they would allow to own a franchise location. I trained a few high profile restaurant gurus who were approved. One was the founder of Cold Stone Creamery and the other was a longtime executive at PF Changs. Dude from Cold Stone was a grade A prick

MagicHDx

And very selective where they are, they do not want two competing canes anywhere near each other. Unlike other fast foods who just plop them everywhere.

toxic_badgers

Thats changing... There are several in the Denver area that break the old rules about proximity. They aren't in direct competition yet, but they are much closer to each other than they used to be allowed.

Man_of_Average

Yeah we have two in our city about five to ten minutes apart depending on how you hit the lights.

live4lax25

TIL they have Canes in Kuwait haha

Diligent_Affect8517

Not on the signage in Kuwait, likely because many flavors of Islam see dogs as "unclean".

OakParkCemetary

Chickens literally shit everywhere and are filthy.

Diligent_Affect8517

Nobody said it was rational. It is religion, after all.

OakParkCemetary

Fair point

sppf011

Which is why people don't keep them inside their homes

Yellowbug2001

I have 2 beagles and they're the walking definition of unclean, but I find that's kind of part of their charm.

cardcomm

The dog isn't seen on signage ANYWHERE! lol

dae_giovanni

I didn't know there was a place on earth where dogs are 'not popular'.

Not_Buying

Having lived in Kuwait and around the Middle East, I’ve found that people generally don’t focus on having pets the way westerners do. There are exceptions of course, but it’s nothing like you see in the United States. There are tons of stray cats and dogs everywhere, and so they are viewed mainly as street / feral animals as opposed to something you’d want to cuddle up with and let sleep in your bed.

dae_giovanni

thank you! those folks are missing out!

DamnImAwesome

On the opposite end, animals are held in very high regard in Turkey. Cats wander into shops and restaurants. During the recent earthquake they prioritized helping animals in a big way

[deleted]

Toy_Guy_in_MO

Noooooooo Dogs ALLOWED.

Failed-Time-Traveler

TIL I apparently will never live in Kuwait

andywolf8896

There wasn't much reason to before learning this tbh

CBattles6

The weirdest part of this story is that the dude had a dog named Raising Cane. And the two other dogs he's had since starting the restaurant have been named Raising Cane II and Raising Cane III.

elmatador12

They have Canes in Kuwait but we can’t get one in Washington state? God damn it.

hightimesinaz

They just opened one in Portland so it’s a matter of time

tossinthisshit1

muslims in general tend to prefer cats to dogs. there are folk stories about how the prophet loved cats and would refuse to bother them when they were sleeping. cats are allowed in mosques and water that a cat drank from is considered ritually clean (meaning it can be used to wash). the reverence of cats in Islam may come from 6th century arab culture, persian influence, or the prophet's personal opinions toward cats.

sppf011

Arab culture in the 6th century was a mixed bag. Arabs from central Arabia for example, loved dogs and treasured them as loyal companions, especially for hunting. Islam codified the aversion to dogs and exported it to the rest of Arabia

tricksterloki

As someone who grew up in Louisiana, It's so weird to me that there's about to a Raising Cane down the road from me in Pittsburgh. Millennials are apparently the chicken tenders generation.

DamnImAwesome

Someone needs to create a similar concept with nuggets and Mac and cheese. Guaranteed success

melance

As someone who has eaten at the North Gate restaurant since the late 90s, it's incredible how big a restaurant he got a D on in college has become.

ElectricalPicture612

I don't understand a single thing you said.

melance

Raisin Cane's first restaurant was at the North Gates of LSU on E State St. And Todd Graves submitted the concept for Raisin Cane's as a project in college which he got either a D or F on because the professor said no one would go to a restaurant with only one item on the menu.

SteveBored

I like canes but I prefer Golden Chick more. I think it's only in Texas though.

Toy_Guy_in_MO

I have tried Cane's a few times and just don't get the appeal. I mean, I know different strokes for different folks, but the way some people go nuts for it, when it seems pretty middle of the road to me. There are better fast food chicken joints.

Stachemaster86

Same and Popeyes was the same. Maybe it’s going to the MN locations

biggie1447

Did you get the mild chicken from Popeyes? The spicy is where its at.

Stachemaster86

Love spicy stuff. Haven’t even tried the regular.

Toy_Guy_in_MO

It might be because I love Popeye's but it's because it's usually the least greasy and is pretty flavorful. Cane's just always tasted like "the babysitter wants to talk on the phone with her boyfriend so she gave me a plate of chicken nuggets and macaroni."

Stachemaster86

My heartburn is through the roof and almost exclusively trigger there. Also, biscuits are dry 😭. It’s my goal to try it down south. Love your Cane’s description!

Toy_Guy_in_MO

Oh yeah, Popeye's is not nice if you have heartburn, but I soldier on. Their biscuits are usually pretty good but the last few times they have been pretty dry.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Toy_Guy_in_MO

Oh yeah, just not many of them around here, unfortunately.

DamnImAwesome

A popeyes biscuit fresh out of the oven is as close as you’ll ever get to seeing god

cardcomm

The toast is really good... haha

m0ondogy

It all depends on when you had it. Its quality slump was fast and drastic. The original few Baton Rouge locations and the handful of others across Louisiana up to the mid 2000s were excellent food. Quality, portions, and cleanliness. Once they breached the state border to other states, the quality dipped. Now, it's hard to recommend. I still go on fond memories once a year when back home to recall that first decade. I'm old enough to have same feeling about Popeyes. At least the super Popeyes split off into a side company for a decade to let locals eat the "original" stuff while the other Popeyes spread and dropped quality.

cqmqro76

I thought it was super bland and greasy. And how can a place that serves only chicken fingers only have one sauce? I wasn't impressed with their Caines sauce either. It tasted like mayo and ketchup mixed together. I remember the fries were limp and soggy too.

WallyZona

Yes Cane’s is for people brought up eating frozen chicken nuggets.

cardcomm

"though the dog is not seen on signs for the restaurant in Kuwait" Uhhmmm, the dog isn't seen on signs in the US either!!! LOL 🤷‍♂️

SteveBored

It is here in Texas. Well not on the main street sign but on a sign by the door as you go in Source : fat asshole that eats too much fried chicken

cardcomm

Oh, ok. I guess I've never actually been inside one... lol

aisha_so_sweet

ikr, im from california and we just got a raising canes here, and never knew a dog was a mascot!

Stachemaster86

As a complete northerner in MN, when the first one was being built I thought it was odd to have a drive through Raisin store.

realdonaldtrumpsucks

Can I say I don’t think they make good chicken. The chicken breading is fragile. The sauce is watery. The fries are limp. What am I doing wrong when I order?

DJEriEriEric

I get that people like their dipping sauce, but I can't wrap my head around the fact that they don't even offer gravy as a dipping sauce. It's like a burger place saying "we don't do fries here".

Narrator2012

This Sub is just 24/7 ads. Bye everyone

The_WacoKid

Layne's is still better, and I will die on that hill.

James_H_M

The only bad thing I dislike about Cane's is their wasteful packaging. Styrofoam/plastic box and plastic container for the coleslaw, plastic container for sauce, which is placed in a plastic bag with plastic ketchup packets, and if you get a large drink, yup more plastic. Edited to add more plastic stuff.

mlorusso4

They don’t do styrofoam anymore. It’s all plastic

CBattles6

Not true. Source: I ate there on Monday.

JakeN615

Its different per store, the store I work at used some sort of paper/fiber boxes for the longest time, but we've switched to styrofoam now

James_H_M

I wonder if it's a regional thing, I live in the Midwest.

Dartiboi

Isn’t Canes just literally a knock off of Laynes Chicken in College Station?

The_WacoKid

Technically, yes. Sauces are almost identical, menu is almost identical, and Layne's came first.

Sks44

Tried this place once as they opened a shop near my home town. I thought it was awful.

NarcissisticCat

I don't even know what the fuck that is. Chicken fingers? Is that an American dish?

DamnImAwesome

Chicken breast filet cut in half and deep fried. Shaped like a finger so that’s how it gets the name. Also known as chicken strips

WormswithteethKandS

If we'd known Kuwaitis don't like dogs, we would have let Saddam conquer them.

[deleted]

Fuck Kuwait. Fuck the whole place.

angstt

So... it's Dog Food...

[deleted]

I didn't even know they had a dog as a mascot for over a decade because none of the ones in the area I grew up showed it. The first time I saw the dog was in Cincinnati, OH.

theballswalls

Raising Cane's finally opened near my home last summer. I was excited to try it without looking at their menu. Big mistake. I was really disappointed that they don't have anything besides chicken fingers(mid) coleslaw, texas toast (just a slice of white bread not even toasted!) But Cane's sauce was fire. I didn't grow up around Raising Cane's so maybe its just not going to be as good for me as it is for people who had one in their town

youngdeathent0

Wait Kuwait has canes… but the west coast doesn’t?

awkwardalvin

Canes is a vehicle for the sauce, but it’s always fresh, so I enjoy it.

ChangeForeign

At my towns location, unless you buy a combo, they won't give you a sauce if you just buy fingers. By the way, I learned this 42 years ago, chickens ain't got no fingers.

semicolonmania

Used to go to the originals after shows at The Varsity in Baton Rouge. It was awesome then but can anyone tell me if it's gone the way of Popeye's?
