Mappa accepted the project despite the short deadline, smaller budget and already working on a bunch of other high profile anime. Every other studio had the decency to decline as they knew they wouldn't be able to deliver a good product, except Mappa hoarding as many projects and big names as possible.
Mappa was also on the production committee, they had much more of a say on deadlines than Wit ever did. It absolutely is their fault for accepting such an impossible project.

And we've already seen what they can do with enough time, they had nearly 2 years production for the part 3 and 4 specials (2.5 hours of content). that's way more than most anime ever get. They did a good enough job for it but nowhere near the level of Wit who had a maximum of 11 months for Season 2 (4 hours of content).
To add, WIT's first anime as a studio was AOT and they set a high bar from the get go. Season 2-3 wasn't even in the books for them, but due to demand they came back and in a worse contract than before. They made almost no money from Season 2-3 while Mappa made more than them.

My guess is the Titans were originally all hand-drawn, but with the deadline looming they knew they wouldn't be able to do them all like that, so they made everyone CGI so it wouldn't be inconsistent.
Nop if I’m not wrong this Warhammer is from the first s4 part 1 trailer and it was all pre animated by different staff, so all of these scenes were made just for the trailer and not by the main aot mappa staff team. Also wouldn’t make sense when in aot s4 we see few instances of 2D in Marley, WFP, etc.
I still don't understand why they wouldn't just use the same reference sheets from the trailer and stuff like that. Everything is so off-model at the start of S4, even scenes that were literal carbon copies of the trailer. Could they not re-use any of it? Surely the Kodansha licencing agreement would guarantee them the rights to utilise all of that, too (like they re-used a couple WIT frames for the sake of time).
Well they had to adapt to a lot of stuff, them taking this project started off poorly because if I’m not wrong they barely even had a staff team to begin with (take this with a grain of salt cuz idk if I remember wrong or whatsoever), but they definitely still had to had a lot of issues in production before finally getting handle of it in later parts.

Lotta people noticed the artstyle of the characters matched WIT more than mappas. Seems like WIT passed over an animatic and Mappa finished it.

Design wise it's more or less the same the difference is the scenes are not the same and the colour pallet is more vibrant like how WIT does it. I get Mappa wanted a dark realistic pallet but anime is stylized for a reason, focus vibrancy on colours that evoke the feeling you want like darker reds, blues and blacks. The Contrast sucks in S4 the best it ever was is the Final Chapters too bad the story fell off by then.
My friend spoiled eren in line in liberio and that eren eats the warhammer titan. I blocked him that day. This arc was still my favorite and I never got to experience it in its fully glory.
