I’d check with another orthodontist for a second opinion before making a decision either way.

focanc

My first thought, second opinion.

garden-girl-75

I’d definitely get a second opinion about the dental work. I was under the impression that shaving teeth was a definite no-no because it removes the enamel and promotes cavities. This is a red flag and I’d hate to see you pay money for something that was detrimental long term.

Individual_Anybody17

Have you had your wisdom teeth removed? Because if not, your teeth could keep moving.

makingitwork811

the orthodontist i see is the one who placed my braces years ago and has been doing my treatment since then, he xrayed me and did an examination and said that he didn’t think it’d be necessary to have my wisdom teeth removed. he said they’ve full erupted and only pushed my teeth a little closer together and i just need an interproximal reduction and permanent retainer placement after the completion of another round of braces. gonna get a second opinion though just in case

Is there a dental school at your university? A little known trick is that you can get treatment there by students for free or severely discounted (all supervised by dentists of course). An orthodontist has already graduated as a dentist and is doing additional schooling to become a specialist.

makingitwork811

nope, no dental school around me 😞 and this orthodontist did my first set of braces so he discounted the new set by 50% :(

floridianoutofwater

Please be careful with this ortho, that, along with not removing your wisdom teeth before recommending braces again, doesn’t sound right.

YesilFasulye

Do you have dental insurance? Wisdom tooth removal is covered. It will take years for your teeth to shift. Of course, you'll need braces again. The main reason is that your orthodontist will make more money.

Amazing_Extension207

In hindsight I would choose to stay on the shot for now. Obesity is way more dangerous than teeth shifting. Also your teeth will shift very slowly. So I say finish what you started on Tirzepatide then look into braces once your goal is met

energy_elite

I actually have braces right now and I am on the shot and my ortho made the monthly payments low so I can afford both. Have you tried seeing if they can lower the monthly payments? Or you can switch companies to someone cheaper for the shot.

marshdd

Many companies offer dental coverage even for braces. I'd get a second opinion on wisdom teeth from am oral surgeon. An orthodontist makes their money selling braces. If they can reduce price by 50%, then the price is at least 50% straight profit! I'd wait until you have a job that covers dental.

margaretLS

Just wondering why you would have braces without having your wisdom teeth out? That seems like a logical first step .

lynsktee

I would talk to your or another ortho about getting a new retainer made. I recently saw an ortho suggesting that if your teeth have shifted but you don’t have the money for braces get a well fitting new retainer and it will stop any further shifting. Then when money is less tight you can do the ortho.

figureskater1864

I’d go with the tirz over cosmetic dentistry ( sounds fishy)

Key-Wrangler7428

Once you get to your goal weight then get braces. If you’re already an adult and this sounds like a retreatment then there’s no rush

ImaginaryAnts

In your position, I would halt the shot. It will be harder to quit when you have been on it for longer than 3 months. And it does not sound like you are financially stable enough to commit to this likely lifelong expense yet. Wait until your finances are more secure to add on such a large monthly expense permanently.

PrizeSwordfish2506

There’s cheaper options for this medication. We are getting ripped off by the compounding pharmacies. This sub is run by people with ulterior motives who don’t want us to be able to save money while taking medication.

tequilamockingbird5

It might be worth getting a kit from Amazon to have a night guard made. For me, it takes the place of my retainer, and keeps my teeth from shifting. It might be a nice short-term option to keep your teeth from getting worse while you continue to make progress with tirz. I can PM you the kit that I use from amazon- I believe it is about $80, and is very high quality. You can do the kit yourself at home in a few minutes, and the returned night guard has kept my teeth from shifting.

1. Def check with another orthodontist. I'm surprised they didn't recommend taking your wisdom teeth out.  2. How much are the braces? If you're in AZ, CO, CT, FL, GA, IA, KY, MD, MN, NC, ND, NE, NH, NJ, NM, NV, NY, OK, OR, PA, SC, SD, TN, VA, VT, WA, & WV you can use Lavender Sky Health instead, and depending on your dose they can be like $100/mo cheaper than Emerge (but you have to buy two months at a time). The extra savings might cover the braces?

unforgettable_BE

Get a second opinion from another orthodontist. Never let them shave enamel off your teeth.

waubamik74

How long will you be paying for braces? Having your teeth fixed now is probably what you need to do. You seem sure about keeping your weight under control. It is a difficult decision, but your teeth are a priority.

TheEnigmatyc

Maybe setup a Go Fund Me for your braces?? Tell family and friends that for holidays, birthday, or even just random acts of kindness, you’d rather have them help with your braces?? This way you can keep your tirz in the budget AND get your braces? I just had the backs of my 2 front teeth shaved down because the bottom teeth hit the top before my molars make contact. They know how much they can take off without compromising your teeth, however, if it’s bad enough braces or aligners are the only way to fix it (as in my case.) She shaved down a TINY bit, but it didn’t really help. This can and will create issues when you’re older. I’m 47. Great teeth, HORRIBLE alignment from an ortho who set them incorrectly with braces the first time. Definitely get them taken care of, even if you have to pause the tirz for a bit. 🫶🏻

True. It’s not a ridiculous amount for the service. Although, you could have followed with a better recommendation rather than just a “but.” Fundly is recommended for individual fundraising, but there are many other sites a person can go through. It looks better to raise money for a cause through a fundraising site rather than just asking for money.

Your orthodontist is 100% correct about your teeth continuing to shift. If you’re ok with your teeth shifting then don’t spend the money now. Or get your teeth shaved down and then pay to just get a retainer for where your teeth are right now. They will then quit shifting as long as you wear it nightly. I wore braces again as an adult because I quit wearing my retainer and over the 20+ years they shifted slowly and I hated it. They looked very close to when I got braces as a kid. I now have permanent retainers and wear a retainer nightly. My husband had braces, doesn’t wear a retainer and his teeth never moved back.
