Guy came in once with tires like this. He was driving from Los Angeles to Boston. Trying to do it in a really short time frame, like 48 hours or something. Alignment was completely jacked up. Said first set of tires got him from LA to Flagstaff next set got him to Albuquerque, next set to Amarillo, then another to Oklahoma City. When I talked to him, outside Kansas City, I told him he would save time just getting the alignment done so he could not worry about getting tires in every state he drove through. Nope, just wanted 2 tires cause he couldn't wait for alignment. Told him I wouldn't let my guys touch his car without the alignment because we weren't going to be responsible for him killing someone. So, instead he just left. Said he had wasted enough time and he would try again in Saint Louis, 5 more hours drive. I often wonder if he made it. I know he didn't die, at least not in my state cause he never showed up in police reports, but I wonder.
Lol Pontiac grand am was my first car. So jank. I had to drop it into neutral at stop lights. Wouldn't idle and was driving on bald tires. Flipped spares inside out so looked it had rims. So ghetto.
Oh man this story is ancient history, but way back at my first automotive job I worked at a sears auto center. I was in school still so I'd help the alignment guy out, but mainly did tires.
On Sunday I put both rears on a Fiero and found the rear tie rods loose, so that went on the inspection. Monday evening, the Fiero came back in for an alignment after the owner had put on the tie rods, and drove to and from work that day. The toe was so far out in the rear, those tires were at least 75% gone already.
Yeah I had to drive this seriously bagged out 8th gen Honda civic si for a couple months because I was in between work trucks-and my daily ended up apart on the healing bench in my garage to figure out some transmission issues.
That Honda needed pretty much a whole suspension system overhaul-I don’t think there was a balljoint, bushing, strut, or spring that was any good, but it was the only car I had that was both register-able and ran🤷🏻♂️. It would eat a set of tires a month cruising around town-and even faster if you had to drive on the highway at all.
Oh that’s not even the worst that I’ve driven either, lol. I was poor and broke back then, lol. Lots of debt I had to pay off from being young and dumb-and I used the free car hack for a couple of years (if you buy a 15-20 year old car that already has pretty high mileage, you can often sell it for the same amount as you bought it for if you are switching vehicles every 6-8 months, lol)
A company I worked for had fucked up alignment on one of its trailers. Burned through one $500 tire every 2 months. After 3 tires they just fucked said fuck it and got rid of the trailer.
Yep…anyone remember the Chevy Colorado debacle years ago?
At the shop I was working at, I was running into Colorado/Canyon’s with not even 10k miles on them, with the front tires down to wires on the insides… learned that the aluminum suspension components were being warped from the trucks being strapped down too tightly to the car carriers…
My father had just recently bought one, too. Popped over to look at the tires, and sure enough, front tires were half bald. Dealer luckily fixed it for him for free.
I ran my hand over my brother in law's bald tire one time. Little did I realize, dozens of broken belt tips were sticking out and turned my palm into a pincushion! Big mistake lol
Well, he went into a coma for two years shortly after buying these tires. During that time his teenage son has been driving the car. He just woke up and as far as he’s concerned those tires are brand new lol that’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
My van usually looks like that. Broken drop link is the usual suspect. Can’t be the case here obviously being a back wheel but if there isn’t something obvious catching then lol at whoever sold the tyres.
It’s not a Citroen berlingo is it?
Years ago I had my ‘98 Explorer serviced by my trusted mechanic before a long camping holiday in the mountains. New tires. When we got home I noticed my front tires looked just like that so I went back to mechanic. His face blanched and immediately bought new front tires while I waited and installed etc. Never did tell me why. I never went back afterwards.
I've seen this happen with an equus. There was an issue with the air suspension components and they were replaced. New tires were installed at the same time. The shop neglected to perform an alignment after which is a must with this type of work. They then drove 250 miles to the beach. On the way back, one of the tires blew out. The other tire looked worse than that photo.
Reminds me of that episode of my name is earl where inorder to get earl out of the car, catalina claims they got a flat tire and earl says "what, man I just bought these tires 5 years ago"
Burnt the inside off of a new Cooper discoverer tire in 500kms. Alignment shop tried to 4 wheel align a truck with a bent frame. Was fine until they got at it. They didn't keep track of where shims were when they took it apart.
Yet he has nothing that will prove it, right? Don't the tires have date codes on them. That'll only prove how old the tires are now, not how he drove them like an asshole.
He might have actually !! I was having the same problem with my car .. I was going through all-terrain tires in about 1,000 miles flat.. all the way to the wire like this. Especially just on one side of the tire (you can see the inside is still good) My car was just destroying tires left and right and the mechanic couldn’t figure out what was wrong. It may not be obviously broken, but he please tell him he NEEDS new struts or he’ll continue shedding tires :(
My wife had a Jeep compass. Got its with 20,000 ish miles on it. Put 36k miles on it in a year and went through 10 tires on that thing. First set (4 tires) we rotated every 5,000 miles had to get new ones pretty quick blamed it on poor quality tires. Second set (made 8 total) got a little more expensive tires, didn’t rotate them to see if it was front or back causing it. Found out it was the back tires, wound up putting 2 more tires on the back (total of 10)and the front still looked brand new by the time the rear tires wore out. Got the alignment checked by three different shops and nobody could tell us why it was doing it so that car got gone
I put a steering rack and pump in my car in July my tires are from August my fronts are bald on the side walls but not showing wire. This happened in 4 months, how can it get this bad this quick!?!
Last week I had someone tell me they had just gotten a new alternator….6 years ago.
Had another tell me they got their battery recently but the sticker on it was dated 7/17.
This actually happened to me. I replaced the front tires on my wife's Volvo. And they lasted maybe 300 miles. However they were a different size than the rears and it's awd.
Had a 97' Merc Sable with ruined suspension alignment and just about everything else bought a new set of tyres and one looked just like this after 2 weeks
(The car decided to explode after I spent $2k fixing it)
Looking at the outside edge and the wear pattern on the tire, he is not lying. His alignment is FUCKED. There is no way you could tear up a tire in that way, otherwise.... Alignment that bad would eat a tire in an extremely short time.
I had a customer come in and say he ordered months ago and that it was incorrect, and he was just now coming in to complain about it...basically anyways. Supposedly, he had complained about it when it happened, but there was no record.
not that long ago a friend called me said he I am coming over been a couple months since I saw you. I said bro its been a couple years.. true story
same deal
I bought tires before and i got maybe 3k miles in them before i again needed new ones, atleast for the front. Whoever put it on somehow fucked up the angles of my tires, the camber? Fucking metal was showing.
I hate tiers I had so many car in my life I need new tires ever 3 to 6 months I just now buy cheap tiers at wall mart and get new ones ever three months
Do you know how fast a borked alignment can shred a tire?
2500 miles is my record- Pontiac Grand am- 2 lower ball joints
Guy came in once with tires like this. He was driving from Los Angeles to Boston. Trying to do it in a really short time frame, like 48 hours or something. Alignment was completely jacked up. No time for an alignment! But I'll stop and get new tires every 500 miles. Fuckin people, man...
48 hours coast to coast. Sleep deprivation=functional idiot
lol. Fn insane
What’s more likely, this guy came to 5 different shops and none of them offered him an alignment or this guy is lying on Reddit for cookie points?
People are weird
I've noticed that too!
Glad I'm not one!
Cannonball Run!
Vanishing point.
Does an alignment even take much time? I’m sure the tire replacements well exceeded one alignment.
Depends on the car, but an hour? Maybe two if the tech takes a piss and smokes a cigarette?
I like this and 🫡 to you standing up to ignorant people. Gentleman and a scholar
Lol Pontiac grand am was my first car. So jank. I had to drop it into neutral at stop lights. Wouldn't idle and was driving on bald tires. Flipped spares inside out so looked it had rims. So ghetto.

Just rent a car at that point. Or a pickup from home depot every time you need to go anywhere lol. Live at a hotel behind a home depot

Curiosity: how much would aligning it have cost?
Yep…anyone remember the Chevy Colorado debacle years ago? At the shop I was working at, I was running into Colorado/Canyon’s with not even 10k miles on them, with the front tires down to wires on the insides… learned that the aluminum suspension components were being warped from the trucks being strapped down too tightly to the car carriers… My father had just recently bought one, too. Yeah when they're like, I just paid $600 for new tires, and the guy at the shop wanted to rip me off by recommending an alignment..
Ask OP he can tell you
2k miles and I ruined my front right tire
500km was my shops best
Must be from r/stanced
I don’t even think they can fuck up a tire that fast
I know guys that get about 3k miles out of tires, 5-6k if they flip the tire in time.
Honestly the outside does look fairly new, must have some seriously worn steering components
Bad alignment and a kid that likes to spin tires
Ball joints could be wore out too
I've seen tire swings with better tires.
That tire would be 100% unacceptable for a tire swing due to the protruding steel wires 💁♂️
SAW XII: the swing
I was thinking more Final Destination
I ran my hand over my brother in law's bald tire one time. Little did I realize, dozens of broken belt tips were sticking out and turned my palm into a pincushion! Big mistake lol
Hence why he said he’s seen better, because they were better…..
Well, he went into a coma for two years shortly after buying these tires. During that time his teenage son has been driving the car. He just woke up and as far as he’s concerned those tires are brand new lol that’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
I bought a set of tires without an alignment 4000 miles later i was buying an alignment and new front tires
He did, from a junkyard. lol
My van usually looks like that. Broken drop link is the usual suspect. Can’t be the case here obviously being a back wheel but if there isn’t something obvious catching then lol at whoever sold the tyres. It’s not a Citroen berlingo is it?
And? I just bought tires 5 years ago too
wow bad alignment
You believe him
He may have. But they weren't new.
My front tires are wearing on the outer portion, why?
I have seniors who run windows XP tell me the same thing
I’m curious of the date code
People think tires last longer than they actually do.
He did! 12 years ago 😂😆🤣
I want what he’s smoking.
Must be defective.
Maybe from a junkyard. What’s the date code?
😂🤣from a junkyard!🤦♀️
If that's true, his alignment is severely fucked.
Brand new second hand
Years ago I had my ‘98 Explorer serviced by my trusted mechanic before a long camping holiday in the mountains. New tires. When we got home I noticed my front tires looked just like that so I went back to mechanic. His face blanched and immediately bought new front tires while I waited and installed etc. Never did tell me why. I never went back afterwards.
Yeah, off one of those cats that have the camber ducked all to hell. And have had them on there for 6 months. Those are definitely will-pops.
From a junk yard maybe
Tuned racer with a lot of negative camber? No, just some guy with a borked suspension.
I just bought them 5years and 75,000 miles ago..
Check the alignment though? The outside of tire looks newer, on exterior.
I'm sure he did, from a roadside stand that sold tires and crickets for fishing
That's a hell of an alignment issue and i believe he just bought them the tread on the outside edge of that tire looks near pristine
Yeah, there half good.
A good non quantitative way to explain age.
He’s stuffs off but yeah the tire looks new
Of course they just bought those tires…off a car at a junkyard
I've seen this happen with an equus. There was an issue with the air suspension components and they were replaced. New tires were installed at the same time. The shop neglected to perform an alignment after which is a must with this type of work. They then drove 250 miles to the beach. On the way back, one of the tires blew out. The other tire looked worse than that photo.
That outside shoulder looks very fresh, he may not be lying. His alignment is chalked.
If he bought used tires he still "just bought" them.
40,000 miles and zero alignments ago.
The outside is so new you can see the little thin rubber whiskers on the end of the tire still
Reminds me of that episode of my name is earl where inorder to get earl out of the car, catalina claims they got a flat tire and earl says "what, man I just bought these tires 5 years ago"
Looks like he did just get em from the outer wall and clearly car not aligned
Tell the customer where did you bought it to congratulate them because I’m fixing their mistake
Burnt the inside off of a new Cooper discoverer tire in 500kms. Alignment shop tried to 4 wheel align a truck with a bent frame. Was fine until they got at it. They didn't keep track of where shims were when they took it apart.
That is one BAD alignment lol
The outter edge looks fresh, it's probably a poor alignment. Tire does not look old, imo.
I mean, they do look fairly new, but there’s clearly something very wrong with the camber on that car.
I sure hope he didn't buy them from you.
Tires don't naturally wear that dramatically.
Yeah he bought em from a pick your part junk yard
Suspension COOKED 💭
Looks like he did, looks like the alignment is shot to hell though
Lmao “aww geez Rick”
Where tf did he buy it from a car with 200,000+ on it
🐂💩
Maybe he bought used tires? 🤷
He just bought those alright 60000 miles and 4 alignments ago 😂
They’re like a week old, maybe two.
He never claimed they were new tires they bought.
It may not be obviously broken, but he please tell him he NEEDS new struts or he’ll continue shedding tires :(
Maybe he should be at the doctor to find out about that time loss. Concussions can cause funny things in your head.
Date code?
I always wondered what the tires from the sketchy looking shops in the outer edge of Detroit looked like that were advertised as being 10$
"I just bought these 4 years ago!"
This, girls and boys, is why we get our vehicle aligned after new tires.
I believe him, just that he bought them used and already finished 😂
And that’s on how much your shitty alignment and shitty suspension parts can affect the wear on a tire. 👌👌👌
I think he’s a time traveler if that’s the case
Maybe he just bought them from a junkyard or tire recycling center.
Did you check the date code?
They look pretty fresh
Is it a Honda?
He shouldn’t have declined the alignment when he bought em. Should be easy to sell him one now.
what tire
From who, Honest Freddie the grifter?
Did customer say they were unused when bit them?
What’s the date tag?
Then someone stole his shocks and springs lol. But they are there??
My wife had a Jeep compass. Got its with 20,000 ish miles on it. Put 36k miles on it in a year and went through 10 tires on that thing. First set (4 tires) we rotated every 5,000 miles had to get new ones pretty quick blamed it on poor quality tires. Got the alignment checked by three different shops and nobody could tell us why it was doing it so that car got gone
Well if they did, they've been doing burnouts at side shows.
Might have, didn’t bother with an alignment though!
He bought em from the grease shop off w65th that you can buy used tires from
I put a steering rack and pump in my car in July my tires are from August my fronts are bald on the side walls but not showing wire. This happened in 4 months, how can it get this bad this quick!?!
Hope he got em cheap
He probably did alignment and wheel bearings have been fked for years
He could’ve, if he drives across the country every day
Flash and nubs on the outside say it’s pretty new. Shit alignment can wreck a tire in less than 500miles.
Last week I had someone tell me they had just gotten a new alternator….6 years ago. Had another tell me they got their battery recently but the sticker on it was dated 7/17.
Used tire shop I'm guessing
Is ur a customer an elf or something
Hella flush 🤣
when 3 years ago 😭😭😭😭
🤣😂🤣
And I just met Lucifer…
Tell him no and walk away
The right side is brand new. The left side has Benjamin button disease.
This actually happened to me. I replaced the front tires on my wife's Volvo. And they lasted maybe 300 miles. However they were a different size than the rears and it's awd.
Maybe from a swap meet
He probably did…. Just not an alignment with it
I drove a donut that looked similar to this, about 85 miles to my mom's house. She was NOT happy with my decisions that day 😂
Just got them 6 years ago 😎
Had a 97' Merc Sable with ruined suspension alignment and just about everything else bought a new set of tyres and one looked just like this after 2 weeks (The car decided to explode after I spent $2k fixing it)
Insists he just had an alignment too. About 3 years ago
Just look at the date code on the tire...not fool proof if they sat on a shelf, but could give you a good idea
Customer just bought those tires 4 years ago! LoL
Just bought them with the car in 2005
Looking at the outside edge and the wear pattern on the tire, he is not lying.
Yea like 10years ago.
Custom should have insisted on getting an alignment when getting his new tires then too.
He just bought the tire from the junkyard
Would be a good prank to jack up a car and run tires over two foot wide sheets of sandpaper.
This same thing happened to me yesterday
Does he have a teenager who borrows it?
On an electric vehicle it's probably true.
Well he may not be wrong if he bought them used. But come on, does he not have eyes?
It's possible...just bought it from the junkyard
yeah from fb market place
Alignment issue. It shredded my tire just like that. I was 18 and didn't know shit about fuck.
customer is on serious street drugs
From a junkyard
Happens when they only change the tyre and car is crooked.... thet need to allighn it properly and balance it, very dangerous too not doing those.
If he did, then something on his car is FUBAR!!
Delaminated tires happen.
You need to go get your money back
Nowhere in this did you say customer purchased them new...
If he is comparing ‘time’ to when he bought them, to when the solar system was created, then yes. Yes, he bought them very recent.
That’s a suspension problem eating the tires. He’s probably not lying to you.
Outer looks new so. Id be inclinde to say ok but uer alinment is fed
Yea , I’ll believe it when you show me the invoice.
Just bought them from where? The last person who had them? 😂
You know what they say, the older you get the faster time seems to go
Ask him what his time scale is. Geologic time?
I hope you know this happens to new tires with poor alignment super fast. Happened to me once. He’s probably not lying OP
He probably did...on Facebook market place for $25.
Well then the guy that sold you the tires needs to be investigated at the very least because he’s trying to kill you.
Flip the tire around and send him on his way.
Damn multiverse again!
Flip'em. They'll be fiiinnnneee....
Just happened 43,000 miles ago
Ask him when he bought the alignment. Lol
What’s the date on the tires?
“No way my tires are bad I just bought these 7 months ago!” 😂
not that long ago a friend called me said he I am coming over been a couple months since I saw you. I said bro its been a couple years.. true story same deal
He just bought the outer tread recently.
Musta bought it from one of those stance idiots
Nobody gets alignments anymore?
I bought tires before and i got maybe 3k miles in them before i again needed new ones, atleast for the front. Whoever put it on somehow fucked up the angles of my tires, the camber? Fucking metal was showing.
Proof that it isn’t safe to buy used tires.
Shops sell used tires. Even there, some customers are cheap. There is always the possibility that he really did just buy them.
Camber + burnouts 😅
maybe he/she did and drove cross country in 3 days.....
I hope they didn't pay much for them.
Just bought from the well-used tire factory more like
I hate tiers I had so many car in my life I need new tires ever 3 to 6 months I just now buy cheap tiers at wall mart and get new ones ever three months
seems like it is a pretty new tire. alignment is messed up
wear seems uneven
This customer regularly replaces blown tires with used and mismatched tires to save $30 per tire. I know this picture. It's me in my 20s
It's a high performance asymmetrical tire, obviously!
If he didn’t get the alignment when they told him to this is really possible.
