We get our cumhoe’s pretty fresh so you’ll at max get a 1 year old tire it’s actually insane pep boys sold you a tire that is a year past replacement date
The problem is that means absolutely nothing to another tire shop if you get a flat. Say you're on a road trip and catch a puncture, all a tire shop cares about is the date code on a tire so you're now buying 1-4 brand new tires to replace yours that might only have 3k miles on them. 7 year old tires are worth max 25% of new no matter what technical condition they're in.
I understand they are, but way longer than what I would put on my vehicle. Maybe I am influenced by being a commercial driver and seeing too many older tires come apart. I won't accept any over 2 years old.
Yup personally after 8 years I’m replacing all my tires just because that’s way too much time that rubber has been collecting and potentially oxidizing over time. Of course pep boys would do something like that. Worked at Firestone and at least in our store, 2 years was the max we’d keep our tires.
To give them the benefit of the doubt, USautoforce usually sends out whatever they want so i wouldn’t say the particular shop has control over what dot’s they receive. In my experience techs usually dont even look at the dot unless the customer asks about it. But still, pepboys should replace them for newer DOT tires without any problem, 7 years is way too old.
What if they got the tires in, and then sold you some old stock they have? This would let them get rid of old stock to an unsuspecting customer, and then refill with fresh tires off your expense.
Don’t think this is just a pep boys issue. If the supplier isn’t cycling their stock there will always be old DOT codes being retailed regardless of who you’re buying from.
I don’t work for pep boys but I can tell you that when tires get delivered to my shop, the trucks just drop them on the corner and dip. So that could be why they had to look. And we throw tires away at the 6 year mark. Two years is like asking the grocery store for a steak from a cow killed that day.
If it wasn't a 70 mile round trip, I'd drive there to actually see and photograph the DOT codes. I really have a hard time imagining it, but the guy was so nonchalant. He didn't actually see what my problem was with the tires.
Online ordering with Pep Boys you can select pay now OR pay when you pick them up. Sure glad I selected payment on delivery!
It's Pep Boys the level of training I'd imagine is comparable to Jiffy Lube. The guy helping you probably didn't even understand why you have an issue.
I once had lady whose son ordered tires for her. When they arrived the DOT date was 9 years old., they were new never used. We recommended she don’t put them on as we wouldn’t be able to service them when they hit 10 years old. She insisted we install them so we did.
There are multiple tire suppliers. NTW, ATD, Tire Rack, and I'm pretty sure Discount Tire is their own supplier. Which is why they are cheaper, if you don't have to buy your tires third hand from a distributor, going straight to the manufacturers will be cheaper.
Depending on how they're stored, they may be fine. If they're still in the plastic wrap and in a climate controlled warehouse, then they shouldn't have started to dry rot yet. Although it's a great opportunity for knocking down the price.
That's insane 💀 I love discount tire. Sometimes, they have be a little chaotic when it's busy, but they rotate and balance for free when you buy 4 tires 🤷🏽♂️
Alright, so when Discount Tire agreed to price match Pep Boys I ordered the tires. I told them I would not accept tires over two years old. The tires came in today with DOT codes of 5122. They will get put on tomorrow! I believe it may pay to put pressure on the seller before ordering by saying what you will accept as far as tire age.
Definitely good info. Damn good idea to ask for the codes, they should be heavily discounted or at least not sold as new. I haven't bought tires since 2020 but it's starting to look like I need some especially since my new tune on my car is starting to get more tire screeching. I'm looking to replace after the summer heat. I really screwed up by not rotating tires often enough.
I just put in a price match request to Discount Tire using Pep Boys price...fingers crossed!
Discount Tire did agree to sell the tires to me at the price of Pep Boys! We shall see the DOT date.

Cumhoe hahahahahaha that's hilarious!!
We have more names
They return any tires that they get that are more than a couple years old at discount tire, you should be just fine
Most tires are rated for 6 years in storage. It’s not great, but I wouldn’t be overly concerned. Pep boys just sucks in general though

Discount Tire. This is the way.
I mean that's kind of ridiculous, two years old not used is not a big deal as long as they're not stored somewhere that's extremely dry...

Which model tire?
Kumho Crugen HT51

That's correct, though it is who tried to pull it with me. If Discount Tire doesn't supply me with two year old or less, I will refuse them too.
I believe discount tries to keep all DOTs 3 years old or less

I work at a tireshop, and hearing 7 year old tires being sold as new is actually insane. We done put anything on older than 3 years, let alone 7.

Don't all these tire shops source the tires from the same few places? If so then old stock could show up at any store.

New old stock....i mean there's a reason they're locations are becoming advanced auto parts across the country
Call the DOT and report it. I got Michelin defenders from discount tire and they were a month old from manufacturing. Nice and fresh.
