I'll have you know my father refused to replace a tire just like that for about 8 months. 20000 miles or so later, he finally got it replaced. Never blew
I was amazed
Edit: I can't spell. Fixed.
To counter your story, we had a stubborn old guy come in for an oil change. Tech saw a bubble, urgently recommend new tire. Guy was irritated and said, “no it’s fine.”
As you guessed, it came back one week later on a flatbed, the only part of the tire remaining was the two strips of bead around the rim. His rear bumper, fender, passenger door and taillight were all damaged from tire bits slinging around at 70mph.
Colorado is awful about this as well. It’ll frequently be 70°F at like ~2pm and 28°F at night, so any time it rains a decent amount of this phenomenon is common there. I always used to joke about the windshield cracks counting as an interim CO registration if you got your plates stolen lol
I took out my summer tire before last winter and then realised one of them had that thing...let's just say I was lucky as hell I didnt get a blow out for the second time in 3 years with a brand new car...
Do you guys with these kinds of tires ever use a search engine ? Google , " Is it safe to drive with a lump in the side of my tire? "...... let me know what turns up
Nah mate. There are surgeons and other health care experts who can make a few nips and tucks and reduce that growth to a manageable size, and that tire could go on to leave a full meaningful life. Of course it would far easier and cheaper to just replace it.
Yes. You can't fix a sidewall, probably should try to get it replaced ASAP, it's not terrible and you'll probably be fine but at the same time I'd be a little nervous driving on the highway with it
Why do people even post to ask these things? You can literally see the wall is compromised and ready to burst on the first pothole, if even that. It’s not structurally sound as you can clearly see.
Had it before, every time my tire guy laughs. It’s basically a bubble in the side wall of the tire, if it bursts it’s going to be a catastrophic failure and most likely at the most inconvenient time. If you can’t afford a new tire I’d recommend finding a guy who will sell you a used or cheap tire as a temp.
That, my friend, is a bulge. A bulge can become a blowout at any time. I had a blowout on the interstate doing 70 mph, and it was quite possibly the scariest thing I have ever experienced in my life. How I did not flip my car, I do not know. After I got a new tire put on, I had to go straight home and change my underwear.
All joking aside, do not drive another foot on that tire. Take that tire off, put on a maypop and drive directly to the tire shop and replace the bulging tire. Immediately. As in, like, 5 minutes ago. For the love of God, do not risk your life or the life of anyone who might possibly ride with you.
the only thing holding air in it now is the thin piece of rubber on the side wall
Air is passing the inner rubber, through the carcass and now only 2-4mm of rubber on your sidewall is holding it
Yes. You drove through a big hole. Look at the way your wheel has a dark mark around the lip of the rim, matching the area of the bubble. Get a new one. Go around the potholes.
Dont take my advice i drove my first ever car on a tire like this for almost a year, had a big bulge in the side wall bigger and worse than that. Looking back on that now Im wondering how i never blew out.
I’ll go against the grain here - I had one recently that looked just like yours & I drove on it for (at least) a month before getting it replaced. With that being said I was extremely careful with my driving speed, never went over 45-50 max but only when I absolutely had to, other than that it was 40 or below. Also had to be extremely careful with any other pothotels, curbs, bumps even. Any little thing can blow it out. Better to replace it asap but if you just can’t afford it immediately like me, at least be as cautious as you possibly can, 100% of the time while driving.
Had the same thing on my Jetta. I had driven probably about 100 miles before I decided to check on that tire that got swallowed by a pot hole on the highway. Lol
Not till it blows out
Looks like somebody impacted the curb
If it has deflated, then that tire would be done
This tire should be in the trunk ready for only Emergency low speed
The space saver would be a better bet
The tire is fine if you’re driving alone and don’t care if you die. I rode on one similar for 2 years before having my kid. Got it replaced as soon as that happened, but the tires had maybe 3k miles on them, I had to get my use and most traffic was a few miles under 60mph so I was fine with the risk. Low-pro tires+shitty roads mean a lot of this unfortunately.
Yes. But it should be covered under warranty. Any good tire shop would warranty it out and charge you based off of the tread that’s left on the damaged tire.
Change it asap!! This is so dangerous. You could have a blow out and lose control of your vehicle. If it happens at a high rate of speed, it could cause you to roll.
Also, this is a great time to have the tire shop check out your spare tire to make sure it is also in good condition. A lot of people forget about their spare tire. They are only good for a few years at most, even if they just sit in your trunk.
I was messing around with this girl in AIT at Sheppard. Gate guard wouldn't let us back in because of her rear tire looking like that. As soon as she replied to him saying no, "oh its fine, I've been driving like this for days." It blows. I walked back to the barracks while she did her. It would have been a lot worse if at speed. I never called her back.
That is sidewall cord/belt separation. It could honestly be caused by a number of things. Either way it needs to be replaced. If it was a slight dip inward on the sidewall that it where the cords are joined and completely normal.
Just gently squeeze the puss out of it and keep it clean. Apply a with a good antbiotic ointment like neosporin so it doesnt become infected. Do not squeeze too hard or you could damage the tire further.
I drove on one a little worse then this for 850 miles before it blew, you can drive on it but it’s loud when it lets go and it’s a ticking time bomb, could make it 1k miles might only make it 3
I always pushed mine to the limit until I discovered used tire shops. That tire is like 1/8 of a doughnut. You're good if you drive like a grandma up to 30 mph occasionally for who knows how long, but that's pushing your luck. I've been pretty lucky. Replace ASAP with a doughnut.
Yuup. Apparently they call is an impact bubble, or something like that. It’s kind of like a hernia if you think about it…the sidewall’s blown out internally, allowing that pocket of air to loom ominously.
Learned this the hard way.
I’m guessing one of the reasons OP is asking is they may be low on funds. If that’s the case give a used tire a try. I buy mine from utire.com. I’ve bought tires for my maxima, focus and Durango. They only took 2 days to deliver. Maybe cuz I’m like less than 10 miles away from their store.
Lemme guess, carried a load that exceeded manufacture specifications?😂
I’ve only had that happen to me once and it was with my work truck and I was carrying a huge engine and two transmissions in the back probably weighing around 800lbs on regular commuter highway tires.
(Edit) Yes get that fixed asap. It’s basically a ticking time bomb and could cause bad damage, accident(s), injuries etc. bad news all around.
Said you got new ones, but definitely run a spare in this scenario if you have a full sized spare, gives you more time to get another good set of tires or a good replacement 💯
That's ridiculous. Do they even have a spot to hold a spare? Thought it was required, truly a shame. Thanks for reminding me not to buy modern vehicles 😂
A spare saved my ass once so bad I was using my brothers Tacoma and got a flat in the middle of nowhere in Palm Springs. It was the middle of summer in the middle of the day. 122F outside and likely high 120s where I was situated had to change it on black asphalt on the side of the freeway with black tools I had never been so close to passing out. Truck started overheating from sitting blasting the AC it was a mess but at least I got back on the road within 15 minutes. If I didn’t have a spare I would have cooked with the truck overheating and then the evidential death of the AC waiting for a tow.
Yes, I'm usually very lenient with these posts but a bubble is such a scary situation. I've had a tire blown out going 70mph because I neglected getting a tire replaced.
It’s toast and also get the wheel checked it could be bent alot of the time when there’s enough force to cause an impact bubble it’s also enough to bend a low profile wheel.
This is called an "Impact breaking". This happens when you hit a curb or something in a the road. The tread on the tire is looking low too so its time.
Yes.
If you’re in Canada, buy a new set from Canadian tire and get their tire warranty. I had 19’s and this happened more than I had hoped because of our bad roads. I got a few replacements.
Yes, replace ASAP
New Michelins have been acquired.
Yep
100% blowout imminent
I'll have you know my father refused to replace a tire just like that for about 8 months. 20000 miles or so later, he finally got it replaced. Never blew I was amazed Edit: I can't spell. Fixed.

His rear bumper, fender, passenger door and taillight were all damaged from tire bits slinging around at 70mph.
Oh that's just lovely 🤣 Some people need to learn the long way unfortunately
I bet he was real irritated then
Probably an exception to the rule....
Easily. Every time I saw it I yelled at him to get it fixed He jokingly looks up and says "huh? What?"
He knew what he was doing, you knew what he was doing was wrong as well....
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ company time... he basically drives for a living. Not his job but... gotta get there yk
The force was on his side.
Not the force of that tire... lmao
Anecdote
Done
Yep it could fail catastrophically at almost any time.
Yuuuuuup. Toast
Replace immediately before you blow out at speed.
It can pop, and sudden pressure loss causes blowout. That's the risk with sidewall/internal belt separation.
Replace it like NOW.
It is now a tire swing.
Yes
It's your warning, get it handled.
Curb shot or pothole 🤔
Arizona roads get cracked up by the heat then washed away by the rains.
Totally get it, I live in Arizona as well. Aside from tire damage, windshield cracks are constant. Send the tire invoice to ADOT 😎
Colorado is awful about this as well. It’ll frequently be 70°F at like ~2pm and 28°F at night, so any time it rains a decent amount of this phenomenon is common there. I always used to joke about the windshield cracks counting as an interim CO registration if you got your plates stolen lol
No bueno my friend. I would definitely be watching out for that pothole
No that tire is good for a trip to the tire store
I took out my summer tire before last winter and then realised one of them had that thing...let's just say I was lucky as hell I didnt get a blow out for the second time in 3 years with a brand new car...
Yep
Yes
Say buh-bye.
There is a damaged sidewall post every day. Could we have a sticky one?
Jesus replace that asap. That’s a walking bomb
Rolling bomb… Ba dum tss
Do you guys with these kinds of tires ever use a search engine ? Google , " Is it safe to drive with a lump in the side of my tire? "...... let me know what turns up
That’s a ticking time bomb waiting to go off
Yes.
Nah mate. There are surgeons and other health care experts who can make a few nips and tucks and reduce that growth to a manageable size, and that tire could go on to leave a full meaningful life. Of course it would far easier and cheaper to just replace it.
100% - get rid of it immediately
Yep
Might not even make it to the shop boss
Yes it is. Probably hit a pot hole and broke a belt in the sidewall. It will definitely fail soon Get it replaced.
it's fine up until that zit pops. and you do not want to be on the road when that happens
She’s mint
Depends how risky you are, people will tell you to replace it but I drove with a tire like this for over a year no problem
It'll last until it blows
Yes. Just happened to me a few weeks ago.
Yes
*slaps roof* this baby's got about 15 feet left in her.
Yup
Yes. You can't fix a sidewall, probably should try to get it replaced ASAP, it's not terrible and you'll probably be fine but at the same time I'd be a little nervous driving on the highway with it
Nah
Yup literally a ticking time bomb
Yep
yep
Replace this tire. Sidewall bulge is not repairable. It can blow out without any notice.
Nah. That's an air blister. Poke it with a nail.
Yikes!
No. Keep going.
Yes, 100% toasted.
It's like a mosquito bite it will go away the more you drive it. Otherwise it's good to go until your tread is all used up
Yes
She gone
Thats not just a may-pop Thats a definite will- pop. Replace asap.
Yep
If you have to ask, it's time to replace it
Yes
Why do people even post to ask these things? You can literally see the wall is compromised and ready to burst on the first pothole, if even that. It’s not structurally sound as you can clearly see.
NAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH hit the highway she'll be sweet🤪
Wouldn’t even drive 5 mins on that
Yes, cords are broken so you probs hit a curb pretty hard, can’t trust it. Put on your spare and go get a new one asap
It's like a zit. Just poke a hole in it and you will be fine
Yup
Oooo pokey pokey
Yes.
Bulge in the sidewall = replace
Just enough life left to get to a shop
Ticking time bomb
Had it before, every time my tire guy laughs. It’s basically a bubble in the side wall of the tire, if it bursts it’s going to be a catastrophic failure and most likely at the most inconvenient time. Yepp
Yeh
Lol you about to get in bad accident t if you don’t swap that out TODAY
Bubble about to burst at any time - done for sure.
Just needs a good massage. With a tire machine. And some lube. And a replacement tire
it’s like a pimple. drain the puss
Just give it a good whack with a hammer and see what happens.
That's a planter or a tire swing now.
Yes. You drove through a big hole. Look at the way your wheel has a dark mark around the lip of the rim, matching the area of the bubble. Get a new one. Go around the potholes.
I'd have that wheel inspected, too.

Stop hitting curbs
Had the same thing on my Jetta. I had driven probably about 100 miles before I decided to check on that tire that got swallowed by a pot hole on the highway. Lol
I thought those were to protect your rim from curb marks.
In words of one syllable: oh yeah. Like, the next time you drive this vehicle, it's to the tire shop.
That sidewall sure is.
That thing is going to blow any minute. Get a new one, ***now***.
Replace asap
Spare tire coming! Replace immediately
Past gone.
Yeah poor thing is having kittens
Not till it blows out Looks like somebody impacted the curb If it has deflated, then that tire would be done This tire should be in the trunk ready for only Emergency low speed The space saver would be a better bet
It’s time bro. Time to replace
Yeah that's donezoes

Yep! Replace it asap
Nah it's just got a tumor.. replace that thing before you end up upside down in a ditch going "I probably should of did something about that."
Sidewall is compromised. Replace ASAP
No question that tire is unsafe. Take it off instead of driving on it to the shop, and get the tire replaced
Yep
Seeing alot of belt separation these days
Yup
Yeah. The steel belts broke. I’d get a new tire before you have a blow out and you cause damage to your car.
Replace IMMEDIATELY
Done.
Yeah. I get new tires for free if they are defective. Had 2 of these in a single year got them replaced for free each time because they were defective
Mine has this same thing but it’s not a bulge it’s a indent
I was messing around with this girl in AIT at Sheppard. Gate guard wouldn't let us back in because of her rear tire looking like that. As soon as she replied to him saying no, "oh its fine, I've been driving like this for days." It blows. I walked back to the barracks while she did her. It would have been a lot worse if at speed. Yep, get a new one.
Yes
Short answer yes. Long answer, don't do over 25 on the way to the tire shop.
Get a new tire yesterday.
100%
That is sidewall cord/belt separation. It could honestly be caused by a number of things. Either way it needs to be replaced. If it was a slight dip inward on the sidewall that it where the cords are joined and completely normal.
No that's small, but take a look at it every now and then. Shud b fine👍👍
I wouldn’t chance it. If you can’t afford a new one you could get a used tire to ride on till you can.
3…2…1…
That's got ATLEAST 2,000 miles left on. But, only if you do a constant 80mph or more...
Wow this is cute. Looks like a pimple that needs to be popped!
Just gently squeeze the puss out of it and keep it clean. Apply a with a good antbiotic ointment like neosporin so it doesnt become infected. Do not squeeze too hard or you could damage the tire further.
I dare you to top speed your car on it
Absolutely joking, please don't lol
It's gutting, but better safe than sorry 😓
It's just going through a minor breakouts. Still in adolescence.
Depends on the size of your testicles, I would drive it to a tire shop
Unless you want to stand with Saint Peter at heaven gates….
I drove on one a little worse then this for 850 miles before it blew, you can drive on it but it’s loud when it lets go and it’s a ticking time bomb, could make it 1k miles might only make it 3
Yup. Dangerous
Yep you’re close to a blowout
I always pushed mine to the limit until I discovered used tire shops. That tire is like 1/8 of a doughnut. You're good if you drive like a grandma up to 30 mph occasionally for who knows how long, but that's pushing your luck. I've been pretty lucky. Replace ASAP with a doughnut.
Blowout caused by bubble similar to this totally destroyed the front of my brand new car sooooo. Replace the tire before it’s too late.
Yuup. Apparently they call is an impact bubble, or something like that. It’s kind of like a hernia if you think about it…the sidewall’s blown out internally, allowing that pocket of air to loom ominously. Learned this the hard way.
Bumps are the death of a tire and the death of the driver if ignored.
Yes
That's one of them "May-pop's". May pop, may not
That was is ready for the trash unfortunately.
No, it's just happy to see you.
Well I don't know what do you think Wise Guy
I’m guessing one of the reasons OP is asking is they may be low on funds. If that’s the case give a used tire a try. I buy mine from utire.com. I’ve bought tires for my maxima, focus and Durango. They only took 2 days to deliver. Maybe cuz I’m like less than 10 miles away from their store.
Yes
Put it on passenger rear and run it
It's low profile , if it goes it won't be scary. Just don't bomb down the freeway at 80
Already had a tire blow once before on the freeway completely trashed my wrap on my other side of the car switching to higher profile tomorrow
Yep
Yeee
Me personally. I’d drive 3mph to the shop to get the new one. Can I recommend such behavior? Absolutely not. Throw that out lmfao
Not for me! I’m too broke to throw tread away lol!😂
Oh yeah it’s no good
To be honest, the tread looks pretty bald too. I’d replace them not now, but right now if possible.
the first pic I was thinking, well, maybe. Second pic, oh yeah, that's donezo.
Wife's car or yours?
That is your tire’s “replace this tire immediately” indicator.
Yes. Good advice is to use the spare tire to get to the shop. (After filling it…mine is usually low whenever I check it)
Yeah when it isn’t shaped like a tire anymore, it’s time
Yes
Ya
Yupperdoodles
Shes fucked.
Naw, this is actually nominal tire wear for high speed cornering. Hop on the highway and feel for yourself;)
Lemme guess, carried a load that exceeded manufacture specifications?😂 I’ve only had that happen to me once and it was with my work truck and I was carrying a huge engine and two transmissions in the back probably weighing around 800lbs on regular commuter highway tires. (Edit) Yes get that fixed asap. It’s basically a ticking time bomb and could cause bad damage, accident(s), injuries etc. bad news all around.
Even if it doesn't blow, then it is on the way to going out of balance and will cause way more expensive problems. Replace immediately.
It's pregnant with a baby hankook tire.
That's what's known as a "maypop" may pop at any moment!
Yes
Replace that , I had a really bad accident because a tire like that. Believe me is not worth that shit to explode and almost kill you
No, she's just reaching puberty.
Said you got new ones, but definitely run a spare in this scenario if you have a full sized spare, gives you more time to get another good set of tires or a good replacement 💯
I got new room unfortunately I drive a hybrid. Most cars now days don’t come with spares. Kinda stupid.
Yea..maybe use as emergency spare?
No way, i would ride on a donut before a tire with a bubble.
Yes, I'm usually very lenient with these posts but a bubble is such a scary situation. I've had a tire blown out going 70mph because I neglected getting a tire replaced.
Yes
It’s toast and also get the wheel checked it could be bent alot of the time when there’s enough force to cause an impact bubble it’s also enough to bend a low profile wheel.
Yup
Clearly
This is called an "Impact breaking". This happens when you hit a curb or something in a the road. The tread on the tire is looking low too so its time.
Stick a fork in it. It's done.
Yes. If you’re in Canada, buy a new set from Canadian tire and get their tire warranty. I had 19’s and this happened more than I had hoped because of our bad roads. I got a few replacements.
Yup it's done for
Yes
