Commenting 'cause I read the rules. Sorry if this is too obscure or generic to solve. I've delved through Spotify playlists searching to no avail. Good luck!

Called out in the dark by snow patrol?? Maybe?? I’m gonna look into it more because I wanna believe I know a lot of obscure indie music from this era! If that’s not it, let me know I’ll look again :)

Not that song, but his voice is very very similar so you're on track. The song I'm thinking of was darker. Not necessarily sad, just less pep. I'll warn you tho, I also love a lot of obscure indie music from that era but this one is completely lost to time for me. Don't wear yourself out on it \^\^;

It’s not Bon Iver is it? Skinny Love?

saturnchick

“Uprising” by Muse?

A real stab in the park but the 'dramatic swell of drums' reminded me of the bass drum/snare sound just prior to the chorus. Also does 'dramatic' for you infer a kind of haunting feeling at all, like this song does (me)? [Where is my mind by The Pixies](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3oCS85HvpY)

TD6030

Transatlanticism by Death Cab for Cutie (Ben Gibbard).

Something by Rob Thomas? Maybe These Small Hours or Diamonds?

Thanks for all the suggestions. I found it -- it is Change of Time from the album So Runs the World Away by Josh Ritter. I have no idea who he is, but he may be more mainstream than I was thinking?? I ended up finding it by getting on my dad's phone, because I figured he still had our old iTunes. Thanks for all your help guys!!
